Hi Everyone, Myself Mani as you can see from the ID. Basically from Coimbatore but right now working in Munich, Germany. Have one wife ;) and two kids - Am interested to know more about our Brahmin culture and learn more about rituals and other traditional values from senior ppl and knowledgeable persons in this forum.

Hope it will be a nice experience for me.

Suraikai is not eaten by brahmins for many centuries. There are reasons for not eating
certain vegetables.
Ground food needs proper cleaning, which causes the death of micro-organisms.
Some prohibit eating onions and garlic too.
According to Ayurveda, foods are grouped into three categories
- sattvic, rajasic and tamasic - foods in the modes of goodness, passion and ignorance. Onions and garlic,
plants are classified as rajasic and tamasic, which means that they increase passion and ignorance
.
In Hinduism, killing is prohibited (even of microbes).
Some even say that meat, onion, and garlic can cause
behavioral changes if consumed in high quantity. Foods in the mode of goodness increase the duration of life,
purify one's existence and give strength, health, happiness and satisfaction. Such nourishing foods are sweet, juicy,
fatty and palatable.
For spiritual and devotional aspects some food items including certain vegetables
are to be avoided! Only sattvic vegetables are to be consumed.

The three modes of material nature, or controlling principles are sattva-guna (goodness), rajo-guna (passion), and tamo-guna (ignorance).
Foods that are too bitter, too sour, salty, pungent, dry and hot, are liked by people in the modes of passion. Such
foods cause pain, distress, and disease.
Food cooked more than three hours before being eaten, which is tasteless, stale, putrid, decomposed and unclean, is food liked by people in the mode of ignorance.
