Once again, Onam and RIg veda Avaniavattam is coinciding on 23rd August 2010. In the olden days, all the members of the family (male) would go for group avaniavattam. There will be children with kalla(doubious)poonals. It was a gathering of Brahmins. After the ceremony, the younger ones will prostrate before the elders. It was a meeting point. Today, nuclear families, and residence in far away places, make you change your poonal, wear a new one and discard the old one. Thoughts of childhood, flashback.

hai guys I dropped in to tell everyone some thing. There are bound to be diff of opinion in a democracy. And such diff of opinion shd be encouraged. We should take opinions of everyone. Some ppl may agree or disagree. I respect every1's views. Some may like or dislike my views. But I will always be truth ful to my belief. An aries(vrichiga) that I'm totally honest and straight forward. I also want to say that during discussions I might have said some thing which is not gentlemenly but I get totally involved in it and unable to control my emotions get impulsive due to immaturity but trust those are not intentional.I regret those instances. I always tried to be within the lakshman rekha. Have a gr8 day guys.

Wishing all kerala iyers from pallakad a happy onam. :-)

I hit this site while searching for the meaning and importance of Gayathri Mantra + when did all the varnas wear the poonal etc., etc., a bit of history around the sacred thread.
Happy Aavani Avittam to all!

I agree with you, it is a gathering of the community members. An occasion giving opportunity to review the past, judge the current status and guess and plan the future.

Residing in a city in a non-south state in India, still, I had performed the function in a community gathering ,in a temple mainly built by Marwaris/Gujaratis. They magnanimously allow this function( both Rig and Yajur are conducted) to be conducted in the temple with main deity Si Krishna, but now having all deities like Balaji, Ganapati,Sai baba,Anjaneya,Navagihas etc, etc.

It was so nice to see so many TBs sitting orderly and performing the function, with lead vadhyar reciting mantras, amplified by sound system, and members piously repeating. As today (24 th) is a working day, compared to last year the members were less. There were two batches. The last batch was with Homam, started by 9.am.

The visitors to the temple also witnessed the function with due regards and piety. There were few "Thalai Avaniavittakkara" boys starting from age of about 7,9. And of course a couple of "kalla poonal" kids imitating elders.

I felt that irrespective of ridicule, deliberate inimical criticisms, vested oppositions and brainwashing, the tradition is not dead. A renaissance is being seen. No all hope is lost.

A fire fly cannot floodlight a whole area. But it can show the path to at least one person when everything is dark. Fireflies and spark are still there.

Greetings.

( It is seen that today was the maximum hits to this site. I feel it is because of search for avani avittam matters/mantras)

surya,

i think piety and religiosity will always be respected. i don't think anyone has mocked, mimicked or abused brahmins for their piety.

times are changing. we have, while made great efforts, to change with the times, on many aspects of our life, we have deliberately chose to discard some others - mostly what we considered onerous rituals.

it is not for me, especially here, to weigh the merits/demerits of these decisions. it is an individual personal thing, and perceived by folks such as yourself, as a community loss. maybe it is time, we give poonals, to the willing & eager ones, from other castes. we cannot grow by shrinking.
