Hi All !,

My name is Murali and I am a recent entrant to the forum. Am in my early fifties and south-chennai based. We are an Iyer family and I am an engineering graduate into healthcare instrumentation for over 25 years now. I have been attached to hospitals, in india and abroad, and throughout my career have been involved in maintaining hospital assets. Am now attached to a private organisation and still into the same profession in chennai.

As for myself, I love "brahminism". By 'brahminism' I am only referring to the culture, behavioural and such other attributes that are generally considered good by society, but let me hastily add that I do not have any 'pride' in calling myself a brahmin and also I do not believe in superiority or inferiority of brahmins as compared to anyone else. It is just that I like this 'brahminical' culture and their typical practices such as doing regular prayers (Sandhyavandanam), reciting Vedas ( I like chanting similar often), wearing 'panchagajam', listening/singing devotional classical music, their food habits etc etc. So one may consider me to be a humble brahmin. Also I am not for or against anyone who is from another caste, creed or religion and have been socialising only purely on individual abilities to be able to relate to each other.

The forum makes interesting reading and am presently viewing various blogs, topics, discussions and opinions posted by many. However, when I first entered my 'profile', consistent with the name of the forum(Tamilbrahmins.com), I was expecting to be asked by the owners of the web-site, the applicant's background, as to whether I was a brahmin, and if so whether Iyer or Iyengar and such other details, and if other than brahmin, then what background(caste/community/religion/language) etc etc. However for reasons best known to the web-site owners, such details were not asked for. I like the website and it's contents and would like to congratulate the 'minds' behind this. I look forward to more meaningful participation in times ahead.

Murali . J

Shri Murali,

Welcome to this forum. This forum is open to all irrespective of caste or creed so long as the member is not having (at least not exhibiting overtly) any animosity to brahmins. This forum also has a high degree of tolerance to polite criticism of the brahmin ways and customs, the hindu religion and scriptures, etc., but the operative word is "polite".

From the description you have given, you come out as a successful youngster who has his feet firmly in his ancestral roots. Kindly take active part in the discussions here, contribute and enrich the forum.

All the best to you in your long journey in this forum

Dear Murali
Welcome to this forum.I admired your open mind and your comments.Basically brahmins do not have anymosity with other communities,This is the main reason we are comfortable with others. But when it comes between our own people ???

Ramanathan

I welcome all of you who recently joined our Forum. Please feel free to contribute as each of you bring wealth of life experience.

Because our community is diverse both by origin and experience, we are bound to have some differences in our thoughts. My belief however is that we can unite as human beings first, towards which a Forum like this can be useful.

Welcome again.

Regards,
KRS

Dear KRS
I agree with you.It will be nice if the forum bring our community as human being first.Acceptabilityand patient hearing will play major rule in this.In general we expect to accept what we say and others should listen us.This is common with most and religion caste or creed are no exceptions
Once we realise "LOVE IS GOD " other things will come by itself/

Hi.
My name is Vivek. I came to this forum to understand how the brahmin community interacts and what views it generally has. I am a brahmin (Iyer) myself too, but I am not orthodox in my views or learning. While I am proud of the legacy brahmins have left, I feel there are some issues we need to address in the present world - a lot of it concerned with our own community-image and the way the world looks at us.

Hi vivek
Welcome to this forum
What is requires is self introspection and ground reality. Some in our community still think that we are superior by birth but all are equal before god by birth. All creations are by god and so where is the question of superiority comes by birth.
The virtues makes the difference.I am proud of our community its traditions and culture but sad the same is vanishing and family bondage is on the decline,Of course exceptions are there.Let us be a good human being first. That will be the fitting contribution we will be doing for this community
Wishes and regards
Ramanathan

Dear Mr Vivek and Mr KurichiRamanathan,

I just saw your messages. I feel nice to interact with you all. However being happy to be born 'brahmin' is good! being 'proud' - I am not too sure...!!! Pride is what leads to development of egos - and then clashes of egos etc etc!!

I am Srinivasan, working as Mechanical Engineer in Chennai. I am basically a Madhva, a Kannada Brahmin but my ancestors have Tamil Nadu as Origin. My father's native is Kumbakonam and we have a family Temple also for Hanuman there.

I am very much interested in our Hinduism and long term goal is Salvation. I wish to do some thing for Hinduism, to make my life meaningful. I am very happy to be a part of this Tamil Brahmin community. I believe you will also accept me, though i am a Kannada Brahmin.

Thanks for accepting my registration request.

Thank you Mualij.

I definitely think we can be proud of being brahmins too. To me, pride is fine as long as it doesn't cloud our clear understanding of things and as long as our pride is not established at the cost of belittling others. I feel today the brahmin community is not liked by certain other people because they are seen as exclusivist, elitist, who don't socialize with other people or treat them as equal with others in their community. To remove this image and to pursue actual knowledge (emprical, which can be put to use), and to use that knowledge for the betterment of humanity should be our goal as individuals and as a community.

I am happy to have got a warm welcome from you Muralji. I found this forum to read and understand present day views of many Tamil brahmins.

dear Muraliji/vivek
The meaning of proud varies as per the context it is used. I am proud of my parentage differs from the pride of my wealth. I concur with the view of Vivek.,It is true that we have to come out of the shell. Of course the younger generation is doing this and my compliments to them.

Shri Srinivasan,

Welcome to the Tamilbrahmins forum.

As an old man with some foibles, I tend to correct errors in mantras and slokas etc., if I happen to come across and am sometimes not liked also due to that. The "abhivAdaye" that you have given is, in correct form, as follows:

अभिवादये आङ्गिरस आम्बरीष यौवनाश्व त्रयार्षॆय प्रवरान्वित हरित गॊत्रॊत्भवाय आपस्तम्ब सूत्र यजुश्शाखाध्यायी श्रीनिवास शर्मा नामाहम् अस्मिभॊः

abhivādaye āṅgirasa āmbarīṣa yauvanāśva trayārṣeya pravarānvita harita gotrotbhavāya āpastamba sūtra yajuśśākhādhyāyī śrīnivāsa śarmā nāmāham asmibhoḥ

Please note that I don't know Kannada. This is transliteration done by software. So pl. compare with the English/Sanskrit version and take the correct words.

Excuse me if you find this not to your liking.

Sangom

I am new to this community. I believe above is your name. Please correct me if i am wrong. In fact, i too don't know to read and write Kannada. As i said, the ancestors known to me have Tamil Nadu (Kumbakonam) as origin. Kannada is my mother tongue and know to speak only. But, i know Tamil very well to read write and speak. In HSC, i was even expected to get State first in Tamil by my Tamil Master. So, i am only a Tamilian, though Kannada is my mother language.

No problem in correcting me. I don't know about others. But, i welcome correcting my mistakes from others that too from old and experienced people. Only the people those who can listen to others words can become Gyani in future. Those who feel irritated to hear others will never attain Gyana or Salvation. So, all suggestions and corrections are welcome.

I am being pronouncing the abhivadhaye like this for a long period right from my Bramha Upadesa, during every Sandhya Vandhana, as my father and book i have taught me like this. Anyway, thanks for spotting this out. I will verify the same and correct myself if i am wrong.

Thanks Ramki Sir for your wishes, We all are aware of the fact that our traditions and practices are the most ones which are made fun of in the media. Even in the school level, our children wearing "Poonal" are made fun of and called names. Inspite of all this , we decided to have the function in the proper age for our child as the benefits it gives when practised on a daily basis are innumerable. The physical, intellectual, emotional values and discipline it provides cannot be equated with anything. We hope this habit will help him in good stead throughout his life . We are also explaining to him the benefits of doing his daily ritual.

Regards
Anamika
Dear Anamika,
It is really heartening and reading such good messages about doing our formalities on a daily basis! We brahmin society is ignoring the cultures, traditions and importances or specialties of our community and mingled with moden life! I wanted to greet for the great works of involving your son in sandhi, samitadhanam on a daily basis is really a great thing. To be honest I am not doing and in order involve and engage I wanted to take VRS in 50 years to start all this. Really you are having a meaningful life and by chanting mantras your life will be purified further.
Always it is advisable to have a guru for understanding the meaning of sanscrit and to pronounce it properly. But you are taking atmost care on a daily basis which is remarkable
Hats off to you and your son!!!
