Experiences with Maha Periyava: Gold Sahasranama Kasumalai (1000 Coin Necklace) for Mylapore Karpagambal

The very famous temple of “Karpagambal Udanurai Kapaleeshwarar” temple is situated in Mylapore, Chennai. Starting in 1950, my mother, Smt. Anandavalli along with her women associates used to do “Lalitha Saharanamam” chanting in this temple on a daily basis. Smt. Muthulakshmi Ammal was their group leader. This group was called “Karpagambal Sahasranama Goshti” and the leader Smt. Muthulakshmi Ammal was called “Guru Paati”. My mother (Smt. Anandavalli) was the Secretary. In addition to the daily chanting they also participated in other devotional activities during the festive season.

In 1970, one night, Karpagambal came in Guru Paati’s dreams and asked her “You and your group are performing Sahasranama chanting for me everyday. I want a Sahasranama gold coin kasumalai (a gold necklace made out of 1000 gold coins with the 1000 names of the Goddess engraved on it) for me just like Visalakshi and Kamakshi (Goddesses in Varanasi, UP and Kanchipuram, TN respectively). Can you do it for me?”. Guru Paati happily informed everyone in the group about her dream. All of them decided to collect donations from like minded devotees and make the Gold Coin Necklace for Karpagambal.

Years passed but the middle-class women of the group were unable to collect the huge amount required to make the gold necklace. As per suggestions from others, in 1978, Guru Paati and my mother along with their group went to Kanchi Matham to meet Paramacharya and ask for His guidance. When they were waiting to get His darshan, one of the persons working in the Matham came to them and said “Periyava is calling you immediately – Go inside” and so all of them rushed in. Once in, they were mesmerized by looking at Him. Periyava asked them “Are you in short of gold and money for the Gold Coin Necklace?”. My mother and their group were speechless on hearing this, since Periyava Himself had asked about this before they could even utter a word about the Gold Coin Necklace. Periyava continued “The Goddess (Ambal) only asked you right? She herself will take care of it. You don’t have to worry! And He added “Visalakshi and Kamakshi have Gold Coin Necklaces made out of riches. But Karpagambal is going to get a Gold Coin Necklace made of devotion (Bhakthi).” He then turned to Guru Paati and my mother and told
“Name your group as “Karpagam Suvasini Sangam” and keep performing many Suvasini and Bala Thirupura Sundari pujas” and blessed them and gave Prasadam.

Since they strictly followed Sri Maha Periyava’s words, gold and money started to flow in abundance. In 1982, the work for the Gold Coin Necklace began. The responsibility of making it was handed over to “Vummidi Bangaru Kannan”. On one side of every coin was one name of the Goddess and the other side contained the temple seal (Ambal in the background with Shivalinga being worshipped by a peacock in the foreground). At frequent intervals, the progress of the work was informed to Maha Periyava via Kanchi Mutt. Maha Periyava sent few scholarly Pandits from the Mutt’s Veda Patasala to ensure that the names of Goddess being engraved in the coin and their order were correct.

This great task also faced multiple barriers in the form of Religious Endowment Board, few members of the Temple board, few jobless social organizations and few anti-social elements. But due to the blessings of Sri Maha Periyava and due to the help rendered by the Managing Director, Sugavaneswarar, Thakkar Kuppuswamy, Head Priest Viswanatha Sivaachariyaar, Lawyer Krishnaswamy the task was completed successfully. The dedication of the Lalitha Saharanama Gold Coin Necklace to Arulmigu Karpagambal as decided to be celebrated on 26-2-1986 and Vivek & Co were designated as the host of the function.

Unfortunately, on 20-1-1986, my father was admitted in hospital due to ill-health. He lost his consciousness and lost movements in his hands and legs. Doctors who treated him lost hope and told that at the maximum he may live for 48 hours. My mother was unable to bear this, and she confined herself to our pooja room. Guru Paati along with the group, Vummidi Kannan and Vivek, carrying the completed Gold Coin Necklace, went to meet Maha Periyava in Kanchi Mutt. Seeing all of them, Periyava asked “What happened? Why didn’t your secretary come along?”. They emotionally informed Periyava about my father’s condition and my mother’s situation. Periyava looked the Gold Coin Necklace and said “The chain has come out very well. Your secretary will be present to put this chain to Karpagambal. Carry on and don’t worry”. He blessed everyone and gave Prasadam. On their way back, everyone directly came to my home and informed my mother about Periyava’s blessings and gave Prasadam as well.

What a miracle! At the same time, we got news from the hospital that my father was back to conscious state and was doing very well. The doctors were surprised at the progress and they said, “Some miracle has happened” and discharged my father the very next day. He walked back home from the hospital which is at a distance of 2 blocks.

On 26-2-1986, the function to dedicate the Gold Coin Necklace to Goddess Karpagambal happened in a very grand way. My father also participated in the festivities for some time. My mother, being the secretary of the group, presided the function in the morning and did her work. She participated in the evening meeting as well and submitted her report. Also, on behalf of the Suvasini group, she presented a Godrej Almirah to safeguard the chain and the documents related to the Gold Coin Necklace.

Even now, on all Fridays, on all Full Moon days and every year on February 26th, the Goddess can be seen wearing this Gold Coin Necklace. On 13-3-1986, my father reached the lotus feet of the Goddess without any sufferings. There are no words to describe the Kindness of Sri Maha Periyava, who, in the state when the doctors lost hope and told that my father won’t survive, gave the life back to my father and ensured that my mother did her duties very well and also gave us few more days with our father. Even to this date, me and my family along with my relatives and friends discuss about this wonderful incident and happily remember Sri Maha Periyava’s grace and blessings.

Experiences with Maha Periyava: Ayana Devudu

This experience by Shri M.V. Pasupathy shows that Periyava is an all knowing great Seer. In 1964, Pasupathy was working as a Tamil Teacher in a Government High School in Cholavaram near Chennai. In a few days after he started his job, Periyava visited the village.

The School headmaster came to the class Pasupathy was teaching and said, “I want you to stop teaching now, because there is a Kainkaryam (job) waiting for you. Sri Maha Periyava and Pudhu Periyava are coming to our town and on behalf of all the people here, I want you to write a welcome letter in the form of a poem”.

Pasupathy did not realize this to be a blessing. Instead he started to fear this opportunity. The reason for this was an incident that happened when Pasupathy was young.

When Pasupathy was young, their family lived in Thirupananthal near Kumbakonam. His father was the Principal at Senthamizh College. They lived in Thadakai Echaram Temple Sannithi Street. Periyava was visiting that town and the entire family were waiting outside to welcome Him. Pasupathy’s mother turned to look at the boy and suddenly a thought struck her.

She immediately grabbed Pasupathy’s hand and took him inside and locked him in a room. Pasupathy did not understand what was going on. He was thinking why his mother was punishing him like this, even though he had not committed any mistake.

His mother started to explain him that Periyava, their Guru and God, will definitely know that Upanayanam has not been performed for you and will ask why that has not been done. “We do not have an answer for that and that is why we do not want Periyava to see you”, she explained in Telugu through the room’s window.

Pasupathy was both angry and crying. The entire town was celebrating the arrival of Periyava and he was locked up in his room. If Periyava was God, then He would also know that Pasupathy was being locked up in the room.

Even though he was locked up, the room had a window overlooking the street. He could see what was happening outside. He was able to see Periyava coming in His mena and also his family prostrate before Him. Periyava pointed towards Pasupathi’s maternal grandmother and asked something. Since Pasupathy was a little further away, he could not hear the conversation.
Once Periyava left for the temple’s SriMatham, located at the same street, Pasupathy’s mother came running inside and said, “I told that He is God and we realized it again”. Pasupathy calmed down now, but was still confused. He thought that Periyava would have asked his mother, why upanayanam had not been performed for Pasupathy.

But Pasupathy came to know the truth only when he talked to his grandmother. Periyava pointing to his grandmother had said that He had seen her with Sulaimeni Duraiswamy Iyer. Long time back, his grandmother as a sumangali had the darshan of Periyava with her husband, Duraiswamy Iyer. She had moved to Thirupananthal twenty years ago after her husband’s demise. After so many years, even from a long distance, Periyava could easily identify his grandmother, who had His darshan along with so many other devotees.

Pasupathy was reminded of this incident at Thirupananthal. He had completed his education, got a job as a teacher and now was employed at Cholavaram. Now he had an opportunity to write the welcome letter for Sri Periyava. His uncle and brother encouraged him and he wanted to publish the letter as a book, so that people could keep it in their homes. With the blessings of Periyava, the same night, Pasupathy wrote “Poojyashree Shankaracharya Swamigal Irattai Manimalai”.

With some funding, he was also able to publish about 500 books.

He kept 100 books with himself and handed over the remaining to the welcome committee. On Dec 9, 1965, Periyava visited the town and blessed the people from a small house. The welcome committee gave the book along with flowers and fruits in a bamboo plate. Pasupathy was not with the welcome committee. He was standing separately along with the other devotees, similar to how he had the darshan through the window many years back.

As Pasupathy was trying to catch a glimpse of Periyava among the other devotees, he saw Periyava was reading his book. His happiness knew no bounds seeing Periyava reading his book. He was looking at Periyava reading the book. When Periyava came to the last page, Pasupathy was feeling a little nervous, thinking what His comments would be.

Suddenly the devotee before Pasupathy bent down and Periyava looked straight at him. “Pasupathy, have you studied Sri Rudram before?” Periyava asked a shocked Pasupathy in Telugu.

Pasupathy answered shivering, “No Swami”.

“This publication has all the elements of Sri Rudram”, Periyava said to Pasupathy in Telugu.
Pasupathy was astonished. How did Periyava know that he had written the book? He had found him in the large number of devotees who had gathered there and He conversed in his mother tongue, Telugu with Pasupathy. No one had introduced him. There was no photo of Pasupathy in the publication. Several years back when he had Sri Periyava’s darshan through the window, Periyava had only recognised his grandmother. He was only a young boy then. Periyava also surprised Pasupathy by saying his full name Mantravadhi Venkataramayaa Pasupathy for M.V.Pasupathy.

Pasupathy realized why his mother called Periyava “Ayana Devudu”. There is no doubt that Sri Maha Periyava will bless all His devotees.

Experiences with Maha Periyava: For this Sanyasi, perform the Thirukalyanam for the Ninth time!

This is an incident that happened many years ago. It was evening time. There was a large crowd in Kanchi SriMatham waiting for darshan of Sri Maha Periyava. Periyava came out of His room. He came to the stage where He usually sat and seated Himself leaning on the wall.

One by one the people came before Him, prostrated to Him and appealed to Him with earnest prayers to solve their problems. Maha Periyava gave them suitable answers, blessed them and gave them prasadam.

It was eight thirty at night and all the people had gone after darshan. Periyava was about to get back to His room. A dampati (couple) came hurrying up. Behind them rushed a young girl. All the three of them prostrated to Paramacharya. Then they took out the articles they had brought from four 'big shopper' bags, spread them out on the large cane plates that were seen near them, and submitted them to the sage.

Acharyal looked at the cane plates for some time. They were filled with sugar lumps, cashews, pistachio nuts, almonds, dry grapes and dates. Surprised, Swamiji looked at the people who brought them and happiness ran through His face lines.

Adede! It's our Viswanathan! When did you come from America? Has your wife also come...? Besh, besh! Very glad. Is everyone fine? Endappa, why have you brought such a lot of cashews and dry fruits? Any good news of a marriage? Here, standing by your side, isn't she your daughter? Oho... you have fixed her marriage! Why, Viswanathaa, there is no marriage invitation on any of these plates?" Periyava asked.

That was it. The three of them fell at Acharyal's feet, sobbing loudly, as if a torrent was released and a flood of water gushed forth.

Maha Periyava could not understand. He checked himself and asked with affection, "Why Viswanatha... did I say something inappropriate? You people are sobbing like children?"
Immediately Viswanathan patted his cheeks loudly and said hastily, "Shiva, Shiva! Apacharam! Apacharam! Nothing of that kind, Periyava. The moment you asked, “Arranged your daughter's wedding, where is the invitation?” the three of us couldn't contain our sorrow, Periyava! She is now twenty five years old. We are trying, since her seventeenth year, coming over from America and staying here for two months. Not a single varan (proposal) has cropped up.
Periyava! Somehow the chance slips by. She is educated. Has got beauty. We have money. With all these things, there is no luck!" He started crying again.

It was nine thirty at night. Acharyal understood the situation. He thought of easing the tension that prevailed. "It is alright, don't feel sad. Come and sit here, all the three of you!" He pointed to the floor opposite Him.

The three people sat meekly. Acharyal started speaking: "Viswanatha! I know that you are doing plenty of daana dharma for temples/ponds and the poor and destitute. Such a mental agony for you! Alright, how many years is it since you went and settled in America?"

"Twenty years, Periyava" replied Viswanathan.

Periyava pointed to the girl. "She is your eka putri (only daughter)?" He asked smilingly, "What is her name?"

Closing his mouth, Viswanathan replied, "Her name is Aparna. Yes, my only daughter, Periyava."

"Did you show her horoscope to the jyotishikahs?"

"Checked with a number of astrologers, Periyava. Every one of them talks about some dosha or other. They also suggest remedies. I have done everything they recommended!"

"What are the things you did?" asked Acharyal inquisitively.

"I did Pitru dosha parihara with tila homam at Rameswaram. Then Shukra preeti at Kanchanur, Rahu preeti at Tirunageswaram, Guru Preeti at Alangudi. Special puja at Tirumananjeri near Kuttralam. Shani preeti at Tirunallar with a bath in the Nala Tirtham... I did so many of such things, Periyava!" said Viswanathan.

Before he could finish, Swamiji clinched it with the words, "So you say it is a lack of phala prapti." Abruptly Periyava said to Viswanathan's wife, "You have got the jewels ready for your daughter's marriage?"

"Everything is ready, Periyava", she replied.

"Besh, besh! How many sovereigns (of gold) are you giving her?"

Viswanathan replied, "Thirty sovereigns for our daughter, Periyava. In addition, we have made two separate sets of jewels worth twenty sovereigns each."

"What for are those two separate sets of twenty sovereigns?"

"It is like this Periyava. If Aparna's marriage is fixed, along with that marriage, we have decided to perform the marriages of two poor girls, meeting all the expenses. Which is why the two separate sets of jewels. But then Aparna's marriage itself is not getting fixed,
Periyava!" Viswanathan expressed his longing, tears brimming up in his eyes.

Periyava slipped into some serious thinking. It was ten thirty at night. Then He asked Viswanathan, "Within how many days should you people return to America?"

"Twenty days more, Periyava."

"Besh, besh," Periyava was happy. "Have you people have finished your dinner?"

"Not yet", said Viswanathan.

Periyava sent word for the cook and asked him when he showed up, "What is available?"
"Rice uppuma and pumpkin sambar", said the cook.

Swamiji asked Viswanathan's family to go the kitchen and have their food. He waited until they came back. It was eleven in the night then. He looked at Viswanathan affectionately.

"Viswanathaa, you have a noble heart! With your daughter's marriage, you are ready and waiting with jewels for performing dharmic marriages for two other girls. What a broad mind you have! Kamakshi will guard you". Swamiji assuaged him with gentle words.

He then said, "Do one thing. You go to Tiruvanaikkaval tomorrow morning with your family. There you perform abhisheka aradhanam to Mother Akhilandeswari and Jambukeswarar and pray to them. What you ask of your daughter Aparna is that... there they would have adorned Mother Akhilandeswari with a shining tatangakah (ear ornament) on her ears. Ask your daughter to have a keen darshan of the ornaments without blinking her eyes and praying 'Let me be married soon!’
After doing this--"

Viswanathan interruped Periyava as he said excitedly, "Periyava, our family deity herself is Tiruvanaikkaval Akhilandeswari!"

Periyava said, "Besh! It is a good thing then. So, you go with family tomorrow morning and do this. Then you go straight to Tirupathi. There you perform a Thirukalyana utsavam for Srinivasa Perumal and pray to Him. Everything will turn out well. All these cashews, dry grapes and sugar lumps that you have kept here.... take all those things and offer them to Akhilandeswari." As He said this, Periyava got up.

Viswanathan's family prostrated to Him.

Viswanathan looked at Swamiji and said hesitantly, "Periyava, since the seventeenth year of my daughter Aparna, every year when I came here, I performed Thirukalyana utsavam to Tirumala Srinivasa Perumal. So far, we have have done it eight times, Periyava!"

"Alright Viswanathaa! What is there to lose? Please do it for the ninth time at the request of this Sanyasi! (Sari viswanatha athanala enna koranjuda porathu? Intha sanyasi solrathukaga ombathavathu thadavaiya nadathi vaiyen), Periyava said laughingly and hurried to His room.
In the next two days, Viswanathan's family completed the worship and tatangakah darshan at Tiruvanaikkaval as advised by Paramacharya and reached Tirupathi.

On that day, a number of bhaktas had remitted money to perform Srinivasa Thirukalyanam.

There was a large crowd in the marriage hall. Viswanathan's family was sitting in a corner in the centre portion of the hall. The Vaikanasa bhattacharyas were conducting the celestial wedding of Lord Srinivasa chanting vaivahika mantras in a grand manner. Their intonations reached a peak and vibrated throughout the hall.

Viswanathan grieved within his heart thus: 'Appa Srinivasa! Is this your dharma and nyaya? You get your wedding performed every day in such grand manner! What sin did my daughter Aparna commit? Why do you not get her married to a suitable varan?' He started uttering a sob. His wife and daughter began to sob and weep, suffocating in their grief.

A family was sitting near Viswanathan. The family head appeared to be fifty or fifty five years old. He rubbed Viswanathan's back comfortingly. "Sir, my name is Vaidyanathan from Madras. I have been watching you for a long time. On this occasion of witnessing the Thirukalyanam with joy and happiness, it is not proper for you three people to sob and weep," he said tactfully.

Viswanathan was moved. Briefly he poured forth his worries to the gentleman who comforted him. Vaidyanathan turned and looked at Aparna. His mind told him that the girl was dignified and beautiful.

Vaidyanathan asked him: "Your gotra?"

"Vathula gotra", said Viswanathan.

"We are Srivatsa. Alright, your daughter's age?"

"She is now twenty five; why do you ask?"

Vaidyanathan said, "Let this Thirukalyanam be over. Then I shall take you and talk to you in detail."

Srinivasa Kalyanam came to a completion and everyone was given prasadam. Vaidyanathan took Viswanathan's family to the quarters where he was staying for the occasion.

There he told Viswanathan, "I have only one son. He is twenty six now. His name is Srinivasan. We belong to Melattur on the Thanjavur side. I am now working in the Defence Accounts in Madras. My son is employed in America in the Ford Motors company with a good salary. He is coming tomorrow to Madras on leave. I have been searching for a suitable alliance for him for the last three years, but nothing has been settled. We are all devotees of Kanchi Kamakoti Matham. Three months back we had darshan of Periyava and prayed to Him with the grievance of our son's marriage being delayed. He said 'Pray to Tirumalai Srinivasa and perform a Thirukalyana Utsavam, your son will get married immediately.' The praptam has come only today. If Periyava's anugraham is there, even you daughter can become our daughter-in-law!"

They exchanged the horoscopes and showed them to a famous josiyar (astrologer) in Tirumalai. What a surprise! The astrologer who examined the horoscopes said that they matched on all the ten aspects perfectly! Both the families were very happy. They returned to Chennai the same night.

Srinivasan arrived from America the next day. He found Aparna suitable for him. Aparna also found him suitable for her.

Within fifteen days, Viswanathan fixed an auspicious day and booked the Rajeswari Kalyana Mandapam in Chennai. After the arrangements, both the families went to have darshan of the Kanchi Mahan. Since there was a heavy rush, only around nine in the night could Viswanathan's and Vaiyanathan's family approach the sage.

Periyava looked at them keenly, His two palms shading His eyebrows. Both the families prostrated to Him. Vaidyanathan was standing behind Viswanathan. As before, Viswanathan submitted the generous offerings of sugar lumps, dry grapes, cashews and so on and stood before the sage, his hands folded across his chest.

A divine happiness was seen on Periyava's face. After looking at Viswanathan for sometime, He said in a loud voice, "Endappa Viswanathaa! Immediately after performing the Thirukalyanam to Srinivasa for the ninth time for this Sanyasi, has not the phala prapti been gained? Besh, besh, your daughter Aparna is indeed lucky!" and let out a rolling laughter.

Both the families were stunned. No one could raise a tongue.

Periyava continued: "Viswanathaa! You grieved and wept very much the other day. It occurred to my mind that your daughter was having the janmantriya vivaha prati bandhaka dosha. Only for the nivritti of the dosha, I asked for Akhilandeswari's tatangakah darshan and the performance of Srinivasa Thirukalyanam for the ninth time! You understand now?"

Following Periyava's laughter complete silence prevailed there.

Periyava continued: "Who is going to be your sambandhi? What is his native place?"
Vaidyanathan, who was standing behind Viswanathan, came to the front and prostrated to Acharyal. He said, "It is me, Periyava, who is going to be his sambhandi! It's all your anugraha."

Periyava placed his finger on his nose. "Who is this? Oh, Melattur Vaidyanathan! Enda Vaidyanathaa, three months back you came and told me that no girl's horoscope was found to be matching for your son working in America. I remember having asked you to perform Thirukalyana Utsavam for Tirumalai Srinivasan and pray to Him.

Alright, when did you perform the Thirukalyana Utsavam?"

Vaidyanathan said, "Both of us performed the Thirukalyanam on the same day Periyava! We finalised the alliance in Tirumalai itself. All your blessings!" His voice turned husky as he spoke.

"Rest in prosperity!" Acharyal blessed them with a filled heart. It was ten in the night. Swamiji said laughingly, "It is getting late, Viswanatha! They said that it is the same rice uppuma and pumpkin sambar in the Matham today. Do have your tiffin here without fail!" He bid them farewell with the compassion of a mother.

ஆனா, nothing to worry ....

Experiences with Maha Periyava: The Vaideeswaran who cured the chronic stomach pain

Though Periyava has never revealed that He is Parameshwara Avatar, there are lots of incidents where His kindness unfolds automatically on seeing His devotees’ problems. Many such incidents have been witnessed by His close attendant, Sri Balu who had the blessings to serve Sri Maha Periyava.

Once, a 34 year old devotee came to visit the Kanchi Mutt with his parents from Tirunelveli. He was filled with grief. They were standing separately and were not familiar with what they needed to do. It was very clear that they had come to SriMatham for the first time and probably belonged to the Sringeri SriMatham.

Sri Periyava saw them and called them closer. Once they came near Periyava, overcome with grief, they started crying.

He started to say, “We are coming from Sringeri SriMatham. I am suffering from unbearable, chronic stomach pain. We have consulted multiple doctors, visited several temples, without any cure. We went to have darshan of our guru at Sringeri and He sent us here to seek blessings from You as Vaideeswaran. That is the reason for our visit.”

“Did He say like that”, asked Periyava as if He did not know anything.

The devotee must have got some consolation and started crying as if he wanted to surrender completely to Periyava.

The devotee started to say, “I have come here seeking your blessings to get my ailment cured. Only Periyava can save me from this chronic pain. If I am supposed to live with this pain for my entire life, then I think it is better to end my life here itself. Periyava needs to save me.”
Periyava looked at the devotee with a lot of kindness. He then closed His eyes in meditation for some time. The other devotees including Sri Balu were waiting to see what was going to happen next.

After sometime, Sri Periyava gently opened His eyes and looked at the devotee. At the same instant, the devotee’s stomach ache vanished. It was visible in the eyes of the devotee. He started to say. “Periyava!!! Vaideeswara!!!, I do not know where all the pain has gone.” He prostrated before Periyava and left the SriMatham happily.

But from that day, everyone including Sri Balu felt that Periyava was suffering from stomach pain. Sri Balu was responsible for the Periyava’s Bhiksha and he felt that he might be responsible for that. When Bhagawan itself was suffering, to whom could he go and pray? Sri Balu decided to go to his Kula Deivam, (family diety) Vaideeswaran temple and pray for Periyava. The next day being Ekadashi and since Periyava did not take Bhiksha, he planned to go that day.

Since Sri Balu could not tell this directly to Periyava, he said that he wanted to go to Vaideeswaran temple.

“You always say that Periyava is Sri Vaideeswaran, and still do you want to go there?” Periyava asked Sri Balu, casually revealing a divine secret.

Sri Balu wanted to get the permission, and so he said, “I have not visited the temple after my tonsure ceremony when I was a kid and want to go now”.

Periyava blessed him and Sri Balu reached Vaideeswaran temple. Those who pray to Sri Vaideeswaran, usually get the parts of the body (like hands, legs, etc.) in silver and offer it. Since Sri Balu was praying for Periyava’s stomach, he was looking to get a silver stomach part as offering. He could not find it in any of the shops there.

An old lady approached Sri Balu and said, “Are you looking for the silver stomach part, you will not get them at the shops, it is only available in the Temple Office. They give it only to very important persons”. She went away after saying this. Sri Balu was surprised to hear what he wanted from a stranger.

He started walking towards the Temple Office. He could not say that he had come from Kanchi SriMatham and wanted to offer the silver stomach part to Sri Vaideeswaran, so that Periyava would be cured of His stomach pain. He went and meet the Temple’s Executive Officer as an ordinary person. On talking to the Executive Officer, Sri Balu soon came to know that both of them had studied in the same school in Mannargudi.

The Officer agreed to give the silver stomach part and Sri Balu paid Rs. 750/- and happily received it. He prayed to Sri Vaideeswaran wholeheartedly and offered the silver stomach that he had received from the Temple Officer.

When Sri Balu reached Kanchipuram, he realized that Periyava had fully recovered from the stomach pain and was radiating happiness as Ananda Natarajar. SrI Balu said to Periyava, “With the blessings of Periyava, I had a very good darshan of Sri Vaideeswaran”.
Periyava looked at Sri Balu with a smiling face and said, “Did you go and give my stomach pain to Sri Vaitheeswaran?”

Sri Balu was stunned. He realized, how the stomach pain had transferred from the devotee to Periyava and then to Vaideeswaran. This incident made Sri Balu realize the immense compassion of Sri Maha Periyava.

It is true that if we surrender wholeheartedly to Sri Maha Periyava, we will be blessed with all prosperity and auspiciousness in this world.

Experiences with Maha Periyava: Periyava’s elucidation

The noted lyricist, Kannadasan visited Sri Maha Periyava and as usual they discussed various spiritual matters. Kannadasan was earlier an atheist and wrote articles criticizing religion. He changed gradually due to the effect of Sri Maha Periyava who weaned him from useless rationalism, but the basic nature of criticism still continued.

He asked Sri Maha Periyava when milk is white then how come the Parkadal (ocean of milk) is shown as Megavarnam (colour of clouds, bluish tinge)? Has the colour of MahaVishnu dissolved in the ocean of milk?

Acharyal gave a smile. He just said, ‘Wait. You will get the reply by noon’.

Kannadasan was perplexed. He did not dare to say anything. Vummidi Bangaru Chetty visited the SriMatham that afternoon. Both Kannadasan and Vummidiyar belonged to the same Chettiar community and greeted each other in their traditional way. Afterwards Vummidiyar placed a large ‘green emerald’ at the Acharyal’s feet pleading with him to accept it. The sage had no discrimination between a gem and a monolithic rock.

He asked the staff member of the Mutt to bring milk in a vessel. After it was brought, he asked Vummidiyar to immerse the ‘emerald’ in milk.

Now this was a shock to the jeweller. This was the process used to check the genuineness of ‘emerald’ in his field.

Did the Kanchi seer suspect his intentions or the gem. He remained silent. Acharyal then called Kannadasan to come and see. Kannadasan was shocked. The milk had turned pale green and a tinge of light emanated from the ‘emerald’ immersed in milk.

Kannadasan was speechless. How did this happen? The Acharyal explained the reason in a scientific way regarding the change of colour and drew a parallel with Parkadal “When Parandaaman (Lord Vishnu) is lying in the Parkadal, He too emits such a radiance. Hence it is Megavarnam’.

Tears filled Kannadasan who then immediately composed the famous song ‘Tiruparkadalil Pallikondar Sriman Narayana……….’

As for Vummidiyar, Acharyal blessed him requesting him to take the ‘emerald’ to the Varadaraja Perumal Kovil and make a Mukutam (crown) for the Perumal’.

He too wept for his ignorance that he had felt humiliated earlier when Acharyal told him to immerse the ‘emerald’ in milk. It was not to test the genuineness of the gem.

It was the greatness of this Gnana Guru to drive away ignorance and guide people.

Experiences with Maha Periyava: Periya Doctor... (The Great Doctor)

It would have been in the year 1957. Kanchi Maha Swamigal and Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal were camping in a house in Rameswaram Road, T. Nagar (Chennai). I was living with my parents in the Northern end of the same street. My age then was twenty two. I was studying in a Secondary Grade Teachers Training School.

Sometimes Maha Periyava used to pass through my house, either during the morning or the evening hours. I have often seen Sri Swamigal cross my house on the street. My mother at those times would be waiting at the entrance with a camphor plate, after having drawn a kolam in front of our house. It became her custom to show the lighted camphor before Sri Maha Periyava when he came in front of our house, and prostrate to him.

The progressive thoughts in my mind, a sense of defiance, the nerve of youth, the lack of maturity to distinguish between good and bad--all these came together when I chided my mother, "This man is some sanyasi. Why do you prostrate to him? What do you gain by that act? You are thus prostrating to him in an uncivilized way continuously, is he going to save you? Don't do such wrong things hereafter." Hearing my indecent words my mother said, "Podaa, Po!" ("Mind your business!") And went inside.

Years rolled by. I started working as a teacher in the P.S. High School, Mylapore, Chennai in the
year 1959.

A few years later, my mother started suffering from a severe setback in her health, her BP shooting up. The VHS hospital at Taramani, Chennai had just then been established. I admitted my mother there for treatment. At that time I was taking tuition at their house for the two sons of Mani Aiyer, proprietor of Kalyani Hotel (the hotel is no longer there now) near Mylapore Kapali temple. His family was very devoted and loyal to Sri Maha Swamigal. They would often go to Kanchipuram and have darshan. They would consider doing service to His holy feet as their most enduring happiness.

Mani Aiyer was residing in a house in Mandaveli near Mylapore. In the small puja room opposite the hall of their house, an adorned holy picture of Sri Maha Periyava was kept. A lamp would always be burning by the side of the picture. I would be sitting on the swing in the hall and taking class for the two boys. Since the puja room was always kept open, when Sri Periyava's picture came under my glance, a prickling sensation would arise in me. I would get down, go and close the puja room doors and then continue my teaching. It has happened several times this way.

As I mentioned earlier, I was worrying over my mother's health condition and was teaching the lessons somewhat for namesake. Tears would fill my eyes. The worry and fear that my mother would pass away leaving me alone would surge through my mind.

One day when the teaching was going on, Thiru. Mani Aiyer who was just back home asked me, "What Sir! You are worried, your eyes have turned red! What is the matter?" Wiping my eyes I said, "Nothing of that sort Mani Aiyer! My mother's health is not alright. Hypertension. I have admitted her in the VHS. That is the cause of my worry."

Mani Aiyer: You showed her to a good doctor?

Myself: I told you already that I have admitted her in the VHS.

Mani Aiyer: What did they say?

Myself: They said that she will be alright, no cause to worry. But I am not satisfied with their words.

Mani Aiyer: Sir! Let your worries go. I shall take you to a big doctor. Your mother will become alright by his mere look.

Myself: Is that so? Who is that doctor, my mother would be cured if she is shown to him? Where does that big doctor reside? When can I see him? Shall I bring my mother right now?
There was anxiety in my reply; also haste and enthusiam; much anticipation; because my mother should get well completely soon.

Mani Aiyer: Your mother need not come. It is enough if only you come.

Myself: Mani Aiyer! The disease is not for me, but my mother! If I come how can my mother become alright? Shoud not that big doctor test my mother?

Mani Aiyer: Not necessary. If that big doctor just looks at you, your mother will become alright.

Myself: (with some distrust) If I am seen my mother would become alright? Such a kind of doctor? Alright. If that is the case I shall come right now. Come on, let us go and see him.

Mani Aiyer: You cannot see him just like that. He is not here. He is in Kanchipuram.

Myself: In Kanchipuram? Why should such a big doctor reside in that place? Who is he? M.B.B.S. or M.D.?

Mani Aiyer: He is beyond those degrees. He is the doctor of the doctors. (Pointing to Periyava's picture in the puja room) He is the doctor I referred to.

Myself: (laughing loudly without being aware of it) What Mani Aiyer! This man, a doctor? He is the doctor of doctors? What do you babble? How can a sanyasi become a doctor? If it is a question of some puja or rituals I can believe it. But then you talk of this man as a big doctor! Hmm... Would it be possible for this sanyasi to cure my mother? This is just your imagination... (The words came out of the edge of my sorrow).

Mani Aiyer: What, MeenakshiSundaram! You who is born in the Brahmin community talk this way?

Myself: Then what Sir! After saying that you would take me to a big doctor, you now say that you would take me to a sanyasi! How can it be possible by this kind of an action?

Mani Aiyer: Meenakshi Sundaram, your mother should become alright for you. Only that, right? I am responsible for it. We go to Kanchipuram tomorrow itself, alright?

Myself: (with klesha) Mani Aiyer, if we go to him will my mother really get well?

Mani Aiyer: Certainly. Enough if you have darshan of him and just speak about your mother. Your mother will certainly get well. You can also remain in peace.

Myself: In that case I shall come to Kanchipuram. But when we are there you should not compel me to remove my shirt, take bath, wear vibhuti-kumkumam, or do namaskaram. I shall come; see him; tell him about my mother; that's all. (The torsion of the young blood was not gone yet).

Mani Aiyer: What Ayya, would you not take bath daily? Would you not remove your shirt occasionally? Not wear vibhuti-kumkumam even rarely? Do those things just once tomorrow! What, will that drown your lineage?

Contd..../2

Contd..../2

Without knowing why, I did not object but agreed to those words of him. On the next day, the three of us--Mani Aiyer, myself and Thiru. Venkataraman who worked with me started and reached Kanchipuram in the morning hours. Taking bath in the Sarva Tirta Kulam and wearing vibhuti and dhoti, I reached the gates of Kanchi SriMatham for the first time in my life. And yes! There was a feeling of something like an electric vibration in my body.

We entered the Matham. Kanchi Maha Swamigal was in the front hall! Yes, the big doctor! He was sitting, leaning on a rice bag. Fruit plates and garlands of flowers are seen before him. Also a queue for his darshan. We too tucked ourselves in that queue.

A bamboo plate in my hand. In the plate were fruits, spinach and some vegetables. My glance fell on the ascetic king seated there. Without any efforts, tears started to flow from my eyes. Yes, I wept without my knowing it. I didn't understand the reason. Why should I weep?

His keen look that has divine light fell on me. Raising his head that God gestured me to come to him. He might have known my sorrow with his prevision.

Again that Talking God beckoned me with a raised hand. I walked slowly and peacefully to him, placed the bamboo plate in my hand before him and prostrated to him unknowingly.

"Are you ashtasahasram (a sub sect)?"

"Yes."

"What relationship do Seshadri, Kunju in Karukudi have with you?" (Karukudi is a hamlet near Thiruvaiyaru).

"They are relatives of my aunt."

"Your grandfather was the Palace Receiver in Thanjavur! Was he before or after Sundaram Aiyer?"

I nodded head that I did not know it. Silence prevailed for sometime.

Raising his head, "You have admitted your mother in the hospital? How is she now?"

What! That God asked me the same question that I came to him with, seeking remedy. For this too, I just stood sobbing, with no reply from me.

"Don't worry! Your mother will get well and return home."

Yes! That big doctor had given a new lease of life to my mother! That Mahan looked sharply at me for sometime. Then, giving me prasadam, he blessed, "Give this to your mother. She will get back home well."

To this date, I heartily bow and adore that "great doctor" who vanquished the demon of ignorance in my mind and put me on the right path.

As foretold by that "great doctor", my mother got well and arrived home safely. The big doctor has saved my mother's life. He is taking care of us till this day.

Experiences with Maha Periyava: “Give this saree to the Mami over there, she has given her new Deepavali saree to the cart driver and is wearing an old saree.”

It was Deepavali. A horse cart driver came to SriMatham and prostrated in front of Sri Maha Periyava and stood there as if he wanted to ask something from Periyava.

Sri Maha Periyava signaled to him and asked, “What do you want?”

The cart driver hesitantly asked for a dhothi (veshti).

Sri Maha Periyava asked one of the SriMatham shishyas to give him a dhothi and towel.

The shishya brought and gave him a dhothi and towel, but, he did not move from there and asked for a saree for his wife.
There was no stock of sarees, but, Sri Maha Periyava ordered the shishya to bring a saree for him. The shishya did not know what to do.

There were lot of people who were waiting in the queue to have Sri Maha Periyava’s darshan. One lady, who was standing in the queue understood the situation of the SriMatham shishya. Immediately, she went to a secluded place at a distance and changed herself into an old saree that she had brought with her. She folded the new saree and along with a blouse piece, they gave the new saree to the horse cart driver.

Sri Maha Periyava knew what had happened. He knew about the exchange of saree. In a few minutes, a couple came for Maha Periyava’s darshan. They had brought their daughter’s wedding invitation along with them and asked Sri Maha Periyava to bless their daughter’s wedding.

Maha Periyava asked them, “Did you buy wedding sarees in Kanchipuram?”

They replied,” Yes, we bought many sarees – koorai pudavai (bridal saree), sarees for in-laws and other relatives.”
Sri Maha Periyava asked them,” Can you give one of the sarees that you bought for your relatives to the SriMatham?”
The couple were very happy to hear this and kept an expensive saree in front of Sri Maha Periyava.

Sri Maha Periyava called another shishya and said, “Give this saree to the Mami who is standing over there. She has given her new Deepavali saree to the horse cart driver and is wearing an old saree”.

The shishya was very surprised how Sri Maha Periyava knew about this since this did not happen in front of Sri Maha Periyava. The lady was also very surprised. Which divine force put this message into Sri Maha Periyava ears?!!

Experiences with Maha Periyava: Sri Maha Periyava as Lord Vaidyanatha

Periyava was camping in Madras Sanskrit College. He was suffering from chest pain. The Ayurvedic medicines he took did not reduce the pain. The Manager was worried. Hesitatingly he told Periyava, “If you allow me, I will send word to Dr.Vaidyanathan in Alwarpet. I somehow feel that if he comes and sees, it will be better.”

Surprisingly the request was granted. Dr. Vaidyanathan came and checked the pulse after wrapping His hand with a silk cloth. It was normal. He checked the blood pressure. It was very high. “Periyava, BP is very high. You must take medicine immediately.”

“OK.OK. You come back and take the tests again after half an hour.”

The tests were taken after half an hour only to find that it had become too low. Periyava with a knowing smile said.”Half an hour ago, you tested and said that the BP was very high. Now you are saying it is very low. What happens when BP is high and what happens when BP is low?”

Dr.Vaidyanathan said “If BP is high, it will lead to haemorrhage and there is danger to life. If it is low, then people faint and fall down.

That is also dangerous”.

Periyava asked like a child, “But, No such thing has happened to me. Neither haemorrhage nor fainting”.

The doctor was scratching his head. “That is very surprising to me! BP going up just like that and immediately coming down does not happen usually. I think …..Your body must be totally obeying your commands”.

This is what happens when you try to treat Lord Vaidyanatha himself……..

Experiences with Maha Periyava: Flowers strung by thread

A devotee from Chennai had brought flowers and heaped them to the size of a hill. There were all varieties of flowers, thickly strung strands of jasmine and mixed clusters of fragrant flowers of all colours artistically strung into garlands. However, they could not use this to decorate Sri Chandramouleeswara. They were all strung with thread and not with the strings of banana bark. In the SriMatham, flowers strung together by thread are not used to decorate Sri Chandramouleeswara. The disappointment of the devotee was beyond description. He had brought the flowers so lovingly. Not even a small string of jasmine garland was offered to Chandramouleeswara.

Periyava came out after the puja. As he passed by, he saw the baskets filled with garlands.

“Why were these not brought to the puja?” the question was evident from the expression in his eyes.

“They have been strung together by thread.”

The devotee who had brought the flowers stood there, his heart palpitating in anxiety not sure what was going to be said about his ignorance. But Periyava is the very form of compassion.

“Flowers woven together by thread can not offered to Swami. But I can use them!”

The devotees were delighted. Periyava was seated and all the flowers and garlands were offered to him. It looked like pushpangi seva (offer of decoration with flowers). The devotees were thrilled by this sight.

“Tirupati Venkatachalapathi!” said one devotee.

“Tiruchendur Murugan!” said another.

“Kanchi Kamakshi” said yet another.

A Vedanti said ecstatically,” Let those who say that the world is an illusion (jagan mithya) hold on to their stand. This moment is a reality (kshanam satyam). Brahmam is satyam. God with form is true… the perfect truth (saguna brahmam parama satyam). God with form, with perfect attributes…. Periyava, the God with form, the personification of Supreme Reality is true (sagunam…satgunam). The one with attributes is the one with goodness (Periyava Saguna Brahmam ... Brahmanandam)"

How true!

Experiences with Maha Periyava: Take Goli Soda

A devotee named Sivan was a resident of Tirunelveli (one of the towns of Tamil Nadu). He used to visit Kancheepuram regularly to have the darshan of Kanchi Paramacharya but whenever he did so, he would neither go near Him nor try to talk to Him. He would simply sit before Him, sometimes for days together and would feel happy by merely seeing Him. This Sivan was a puritan both physically and in his eating habits and always wore the Saivite symbol of 'vibhoothi' (holy ash) on his forehead and anyone seeing him could perceive that he was a man of complete devotion both by his looks and deeds.

One day after the darshan, he reached 'Maha Swami' as usual to take leave of Him and get His blessings which was usually given by Him by waving His hand. But on that particular day, Sri Maha Periyava opened His divine mouth and asked, “Started for the journey? At least take Soda (aerated bottled water popularly known as 'Goli Soda') …On the way you can...”

Sivan started for his home town, came to Chengalpet and then started for Tirunelveli. In the same bus, four boys were travelling making noise, troubling the co-passengers. Sivan kept quiet and continued with his journey. When the bus was about to reach Madurai on the way to Tirunelveli, it stopped at a small village. Sivan was sitting in the bus, watching a small shop, having soda bottles arranged neatly in a row, and he remembered what Maha Periyava had told him and besides he also felt thirsty, and so got down and went to the shop to drink one Goli Soda.

When he came back to the bus to his seat, he was shocked to find his bag, which he usually carried that contained his meagre belongings and money missing. But the four boys shouted at him without respect and said, “We have put your bag in one of the seats at the back. Go there. We want to travel sitting in that seat”

Sivan meekly went to the seat where his bag was kept and travelled. Immediately after exactly an hour, the bus he was travelling met with an accident, and the two boys who were travelling in his previous seat died on the spot.

Sivan was shocked and dazed, started thinking why Periyava had asked him to take Goli Soda, which was unusual, why the bus stopped there, and why he saw the shop and the Goli Soda, and why he felt like drinking a Soda.......... and all.

When the gentleman who narrated this incident to the writer, met Maha Periyava and told him as to how Sivan escaped from the accident, Maha Periyava said, “Oh Sivan thought I saved him, it is the great Lord who has saved him”

Such is the divine humility of the great Sri Maha Periyava.

Experiences with Maha Periyava: “Kan Kanda Deivam” (Visible God)

We are very fortunate to hear the experiences of Sri Balu, who had the great opportunity to serve Periyava very often. Once, when Sri Balu went for Periyava’s darshan, Periyava had already sent everyone who was serving Him that day, to attend an Upanayanam.

Sri Balu had multiple opportunities like this to serve Periyava all by himself. Periyava was staying at Thenambakkam during that time.

A Kerala family had come for Periyava’s darshan on that particular day. Two people were carrying an old woman. She must have been more than 90 years old with a heavy-set body. It also appeared that she had vision problems and was unable to see things around her clearly.

After talking to them, it was known that they had come for Periyava’s darshan for the first time.
The woman had lost her eyesight when she was pregnant. Even after consulting multiple doctors, praying at various temples, her eyesight had not been cured. Now, even after the birth of her grandchildren, her prayers for eyesight had not been answered.

When they had visited an astrologer in Kerala, for her granddaughter, they had also enquired about a cure for her eyesight. The astrologer had suggested her to visit some temples and that they would find an answer in one of the temples.

So, the family started their temple visits again. After visiting Kanyakumari, Rameswaram, Madurai and Thiruchendur, they had darshan of Mayuranathar at Mayavaram and finally reached Vaitheeswaran Koil.

They did not know that it would be at Vaitheeswaran Koil that their prayers would be answered. They were tired after visiting all the other temples. But still with hopes alive, they bathed at the temple and were preparing for the darshan, when a Vaideegar came and suggested them an idea. He said.

“It is good that you had visited so many temples. After getting the blessings from Vaitheeswaran, please go and have darshan of Periyava at Kanchipuram and tell your problems to Him”. On hearing this, the hopes of the family grew.

After having darshan of Periyava, they requested Sri Balu to inform Periyava about their visits to the temple and their wish to get the eyesight back.

Periyava was hearing all this and asked Sri Balu to get a torchlight. Sri Balu was hesitating since it might not be “Madi” (pure) for Periyava to touch the torch light. But Periyava said it was OK and asked him to get it.

Periyava shone His face with the torch and asked the woman if she could see anything. Periyava was standing on one side of the well and the woman was on the other side. All the time, she was standing there without knowing what was happening around her. After Periyava asked if she could see anything, she answered, “Yes. I can see the Samiyar”. She had mentioned it that way, since she hailed from Kerala. All the family members were surprised to know that she had got her vision back. Her eyes were not only filled with light, but also with happy tears.

The entire family felt that Periyava is the “Kan Kanda Deivam”. By having darshan of Periyava, they felt that they had the darshan of all the Gods and temples they have visited until now all at one place.

Experiences with Maha Periyava: I shall conduct the marriage

I had been waiting for two hours for the darshan, but couldn't have it. Since waiting any longer would affect my office work (I had come to the nearby junction to do the inspection), with a kumbidu (joining palms in reverence) from a distance, I went to attend to my work.

Two hours later, an assistant from SriMatham came to the railway station and told me that Sri Maha Periyava had asked him to bring me.

"Tell me exactly what Periyava told you."

"Go and look in the Satara station. That Ramaswamy would be doing the inspection there. Ask him to come", he said.

I finished my work in a hurry and went for the darshan. I wanted to seek His pardon but Periyava was very busy. I could not get back to my headquarters without finishing the work as my higher officials would be angry... So I started.

Periyava did not seem to mind my reply at all. "What do you want?" He asked me.

At that time, there was only one problem on my mind--my daughter's marriage.

"My daughter should get married in a good place. Appa is pestering me so much. He too sends the jatakam (horoscope) to many people, asking for the varan jatakam (horoscope of the boy). Most people do not reply. The horoscopes that have arrived are not matching..."

"Only that? Alright, go. I shall conduct your daughter's marriage."

This clear reply astonished me. 'I shall conduct...'

It seemed that a rain of ice was showered on me. Only those who encountered such unexpected attack of pleasure could understand my position then. Thinking no further, in a naive way, I asked Him at once, "satyamagach cholrela (are you telling the truth)?"

Such a question to the Satya Swaroopam! (Thinking about it even now gives me shivers)

The Karunai Vallal (patron of compassion) smiled slowly. That was all. This incident at that time was not recorded deep in my mind.

I went back home and got immersed in my work. Two months later, a letter came from Mumbai. The reply with the horoscope of the boy, to the letter my father wrote sometime back which was not in memory.

The horoscopes were in agreement. With the other formalities completed, the marriage also took place.

After a gap of over two years, it was at the SriMatham camp in Kurnool.
I, my daughter and her child went for darshan of Sri Maha Periyava.
Keeping the child at Maha Periyava's feet under His graceful look, we were replying to His inquiries. (The child meantime went to sleep.)

After Periyava gave prasadam, I took leave with my daughter and walked four or five steps back.

It seemed that Periyava called us back with a snap of his fingers. We turned back.

"How am I to do rakshana (protection) of this child, keeping it in the Matham? Take it with you!"

We were overwhelmed with embarrassment. In the perananda (great joy) of Maha Periyava's darshan, we had totally forgotten about the child!

My daughter ran and took the child in her arms. Periyava then told SriKantan, His assistant nearby, "Ask him if it is satisfactory for Ramaswamy."

We did not understand. Why such a question now? We are only taking leave in happiness?

We could not reply.

"Ask what his daughter's name is."

"Uma!” I said.

"Mapillai peru (the bridegroom's name)?"

"Sadasivan..."

"Alright... you should not blame me. I have conducted the marriage only after taking care of the peyar poruttham (matching of the names)!"

Tears flowed down my eyes. Such a power of remembrance? Such an anugraham? The punya (merits) of only a koti janmams (one crore births) would probably fructify collectively in this way.

Experiences with Maha Periyava: There Is No Greater Deity Than One’s Mother And No Greater Fast Than The Ekadashi Fast

“My mother seems to be mentally deranged. She leaves the house open and wanders away. We have to go in search of her and bring her back. There is no one else at home. Can I bring her here and leave her to stay at SriMatham?” This was a devotee, Gopalan’s request.

“Thank goodness! At least you thought of asking me if you could bring her here and leave her in my care and not take her away and abandon her in some forest. One’s mother is verily God. There is a proverb which says that there is no greater deity than one’s mother and no greater fast than the Ekadashi fast. The state of mothers has come to this nowadays…”

Periyava got up and went in and came out after a while.

Meanwhile, Gopalan was tortured by a deep sense of remorse. Besides he feared that he had erred with Periyava and as a consequence would have to suffer greater difficulties. When Periyava came out again he fell at Periyava’s feet once more.

“Please forgive me. I have spoken disrespectfully about my mother to Periyava” he pleaded.
Periyava advised him in a gentle voice. “It is the duty of the children to take care of their aged parents. If one’s mother and father give a curse, it ruins the family. If you cannot take care of your mother since you are alone, find someone to help you.”

“I shall not disregard Periyava’s advice,” said Gopalan and received prasadam before he left.

Experiences with Maha Periyava: Paramacharya’s Radiance

Between 1979 and 1982 I was working as the Chief Vigilance officer at the Indian Oil Corporation. Belgaum was in one of the marketing divisions of Indian Oil Corporation and as Chief Vigilance Officer I had to visit Belgaum.

The train from Bangalore reaches Hubli in the morning but, onward journey between Hubli and Belgaum used to take about two hours as it stopped at each wayside station like a passenger train. It was the usual practice that when a Senior Officer visited Belgaum, an Officer and Assistant Manager would meet the visiting officer at Hubli and drive him to Belgaum.

On the way, one would pass Kittur. Kittur is a small town. It was once the headquarters of the Rani of Kittur who is said to have fought against the British.

On reaching Kittur, we found to our surprise there were hardly any devotees. I found the saint sitting under a big tree. There were few people seated on the ground a little distance away. The Assistant Manager, Krishnan and I attempted to prostrate before the saint but His hand was held up as though to stop us from doing so. The Secretary of the SriMatham standing near the Paramacharya asked us not to do the namaskaram.

It was a disappointment but later on the implication was explained. I was told that till that morning the Acharya was observing a vigorous virutham (fast) and that if I had prostrated before him He would raise His hand and bless and in that process powerful cosmic energy would emanate from the centre of the palm and I may not withstand the force it would transmit. It did not mean that the Acharya was averse to blessing me.

Finally, talking about my personal life, it looked as though He knew everything about me and He was trying to test me to check if I was speaking the truth. He then asked me the name of my native place. I told Him I hail from the village called Aduthurai in Tanjore District. He cross examined me as to how I claim to be so.

When I told him that I had gone there often along with my mother, He said that it is my mother’s village and that one should mention the native village which was that of my father. When I pleaded my ignorance, he gave me broad hints to help locate the village. For some reason he would not name it. But He specifically told me that in that village there is a temple which was built by my great grandfather, and, that there is stone idol of Anjaneya which was lying in the temple without being consecrated.

He wanted me to locate the village. “Go to the temple and see that the Anjaneya idol is installed as the agama shastras and that this should be done without delay”. I then took leave of Him.

It was at the time mentioned earlier that the secretary told me why I was not allowed to do the namaskaram and also said that in his experience there were very few people to have had such close interaction with the Acharya Swami.

After this incident, I went to my father’s sister, the lone survivor of my father’s family. She was then in her 90’s and living in Kumbakonam. From her, I learnt that my father’s village is called Thillaambur on the banks of river Kudamurtti, 9 kms south of Kumbakonam on the Mannargudi road adjoining Nannilam. Soon after, I went to the village and found that what the Paramacharya said was true….

And thereafter some of us including Krishnaswami, son of the former Village Officer, and Shri. Narasimha Charya, the landlord got together. Over the last two decades we have slowly improved the conditions in the temple. Now particularly the Anjaneya in the temple is becoming quite famous, in that, it is said that if the parents of unmarried daughters worship at this temple for six Saturdays, they will be able to find a good match easily for their daughter.

I feel it is a unique experience in my life… not only to have been before great saint, but to have had such personal interaction with him over men and matters. I was not able to look into his eyes directly. It was so radiant and powerful and I felt as though I was looking at the sun. Even today I can close my eyes and recreate the scene. I am indeed very fortunate

Experiences with Maha Periyava: Good times have come

Sri Thillainathan from Chennai shares his experience during his darshan of Periyava.

In 1959, Periyava was camping in Vanagaram near Chennai. He was performing Vyasa Pooja and observing the Chaturmasya Vratham. One day evening, a lady was standing near Periyava’s Sannidhi and chanting something.

Periyava called Thillainathan and asked if the lady is chanting “Yathra Prapantham”. Thillainathan was surprised when he went and asked the lady and she responded yes. Periyava asked her to chant Soundarya Lahiri after she was done.

It was around 6 pm, and before Periyava started His Pooja, he called the lady and asked with whom she had come. She answered that she had come with her neighbours, and since it was late, they had already left.

Periyava left for the Pooja and once it was over, he called the lady and asked her to light “Nei Deepam” (Ghee lamp) for the thulasi and do pradakshina for 45 days. He also asked Kannivadi Zamin, who also had come for Periyava’s darshan to drop the lady at her house.

45 days had passed, and when Thillainathan went for Periyava’s darshan, he met the lady and her husband. The lady introduced Thillainathan as the devotee who had asked her to read Soundarya Lahiri on the instructions of Periyava.

The lady continued, “We were separated for a long time. I had darshan of Periyava in the hope that this problem will be solved. We have now got together due to Periyava’s grace”.

Sri Periyava, the ocean of compassion that He is has removed the difficulties of many, many devotees. It is a promise that those who get hold of this graceful divinity will achieve prosperity and auspiciousness in their lives.
