Best wishes

Dear Ranjani,
I wish you all the best for your exams. I have sent a private message to you with the hope of having a friendship even outside this site. Pl check that out if you find time in between your study.

Hi SFox,
I too agree with you in the point that there are many good things which we also can/should adopt from western people. You know much better about them than me. But what I could understand about them is that each person has his own territory and nobody can interfere in any matter. Even a small kid has his own personal rights and liberties which even its mother or father cannot question. But that is not the situation here. A girl's whole life is in her parents' hand till marriage and husband's after marriage. We cannot utter the word "Personal" here. I am talking about the majority.
Regarding your quote about "self-centeredness", my humble opinion is We, Brahmins are more self-centered than our counterparts. We show this nature even with our family members. My aim is not to find fault but to improve ourselves.
And one more thing I wanted to add. Was this necessary to put this ? "I am sorry to barge in on your dialog with Kothai." Every one knows that all posts are commentable by all. Am I right?

Western etiquette!

Dear Kothai:
The reason I asked your permission to barge in was part of the western etiquette. It is polite to ask permission when you interrupt someone! Another good habit, the Chennaiyates could learn!! Sorry to say this! I might even be called a ABCD (American Broughtup Confused Desi)! But I see this all the time; people constantly interrupt when someone is talking!

Kothai, again, I am sorry! you must have been given misinformation! Of course, each person has his/her own personal space and that other people respect that and do not barge in. That doesn't mean the kids (minors) have the run of the house!! In fact, an average American household has strict house rules. You probably have read some news item on how some kid sued his parent or something!! But believe me, it is NOT the norm!

Do you want to be a prisoner in your own household where you cannot even express your own views? It appears that we (Tamil Brahmins) are still a male-dominated society where the woman doesn't have a voice!

Is your name a vaishavaite name? If so, please enlighten me about the origin of that name! I vaguely remember about the name (is it for Andaal?) but forgot the details! Part of the western upbringing!!

Meaning of Kothai

Dear SFox,
You are correct. The name refers to Aandaal only.
But I myself don't know the meaning of it. When searched for that I could find various spellings, pronunciations and meanings of it.
Kothai, Kodhai, Godhai ....
The meaning which seemed apt to me is "Garland". We have seen the name Poonkothai meaning "garland of flowers".
Other meanings - "Given by Lord","Given by Lord","Gift of Motherland(as she was found near the Thulasi Chedi)".
Even I am confused and I will be happy if anybody gives correct explanation.
Sorry SFox. I didnt try to know till yesterday because this is only my Punaippeyar.

Thanks

Hello Chintana

Thanks for a warm welcome. I joined this forum to get an idea of what are the issues / discussions in the tamil brahmin community. I have lived my life in the north and less of interaction with my south counterparts also. This is a common mode for all the tamil brahmins in the country to share their views/problems/thoughts/.

Welcome to YOUR community, Suresh! We are delighted you are joining us. Please participate and contribute.

Is that the picture of Russell Crowe you have under "avatar"?

Great! only young persons like you can make a big difference in the way we do things in our society. The relative who had directed you to this site deserves applause! bring in more and more of ur young friends to this site and participate in the discussions. How i wish such forum/fora were existent in our young days! things could have been far better than now. Well, keep up the tempo. The interest should be kept intact like 'valarpirai chandran'.

I am confused! why we need to enumerate the brahmins in TN? after all, such timeconsuming process may not take us anywhere? Already, the Census Records do classify the population on the basis of 'Caste'; Even if you do a fresh enumeration and conclude that we account for 7% of total
Tamilnadu population ( as is claimed by some here in Tambrahms), what are we going to do with that number (7%)? even if that number be 8% or 9%, what is its significance? Perhaps, the figure would get rejected by the agencies (to whom we are going to put our demands, based on this percentage) on the ground that the data is unreliable and bogus! Instead, we should be discussing on improving the economic and cultural status of our people, particularly, the lower and lower-middle income groups belonging to the tamil brahmins living in Tamilnadu. I am sorry, the professor, dr_vb's message is so ambiguous and inadequate ( surprisingly from a professor, please, no offence) howsoever good the intention may be. My suggestion could be that we should have a genuinely subsidised educational institutions built and managed by our own people benefitting our own children, belonging to the categories mentioned above. Perhaps, some of the primary, middle and high-schools run by our people in different part of Tamilnadu, certainly not the elite ones of Padma-seshadri type, but whose which are running for decades by our people but have remained in the same condition! We should start from the grass root level. We can also run self-financing technical institutions at a subsided costs to our wards who are otherwise paying a heavy sum in many such institutions today. The modalities can be worked out later. But the purpose of collecting such massive data be made cystal clear to all of us. I would request the members to read my letter from the point of view of those of us/our children who still look up to help from others!
