The answer to the eternal question: Does money make you happy? is no, according to a new study analyzing the relationship between wealth and happiness.
"You ask the question 'can money make us happy' and the evidence shows that it doesn't. The evidence we get is that we get richer and richer but we don't get any happier," Robert Skidelsky, the economic historian and co-author of a book on modern capitalism entitled "How Much Is Enough" told CNBC on Wednesday.
The "basic goods" conducive to a happy life include health, education, leisure, friendship and harmony with nature, according to the book, which was written by Skidelsky, an emeritus professor of political economy at the University of Warwick, and his son, philosopher Edward Skidelsky.

They advocated that work should be breaks from leisure, rather than people taking breaks from work.
"A good life is a life that contains these basic goods and once you've got enough money for those, you have enough -- so to carry on working for more is silly," Edward Skidelsky told CNBC on Wednesday.

The book's conclusions echo the work of economist John Maynard Keynes, of whom the elder Skidelsky has previously written a biography. In 1930, Keynes predicted that within a century per capita income would steadily rise and people's basic needs would be met, meaning that no one would have to work more than fifteen hours a week.
"What has happened is that we have got a lot richer but our workload has not actually dropped," Robert Skidelsky said. "We're on a treadmill, a work treadmill, a growth treadmill, for what end? We don't even ask the question. It's just more and more accumulation."

"We have an insatiable desire for more and more and we are always comparing ourselves with other people and wanting more than them. The job market is controlled by employers and not employees so people don't have the power to set their own terms and conditions of work," his son added.
The economic slump had caused more people to be dissatisfied and question the purpose of working, the Skidelskys said.

Dear Prasad Sir,

Money ONLY can not make anyone happy. There are other aspects like good health, good family and good friends

to make a person happy! But without money no one can be happy, since prices of stuff are rocketing so high!! :D

In my close family circle, there is a 'kOteeswaran' who has just retired from work overseas and settling in Sing. Chennai.

His mother is bedridden and needs someone nearby all the time. He is shelling out Rs. 15,000/ + per month for a maid.

It works out to nearly two lakhs per year! Now his wife has gone to another city with good job with a handsome salary.

This poor guy has to manage the kitchen all alone and gives Rs. 3,000/ to another helper for 'house maintenance'!

Money can't make you happy:

Can money make one Happy? This is an oft repeated subject of enquiry, which goes on generation after generation. First let us understand what is Happiness? Happiness is the state of mind. This state of mind occurs only when there is inner satisfaction. By itself Money can never make one satisfied. In fact it does the opposite, the craving for money making increases. It was Gauthama Budhdha who said “Peace comes from within. Do not seek it without.”

Money is only means for phyisical comfort. It can never give inner happiness.

"Dialogues with The Guru" is a wonderful Book in which 34th Acharya of Sringeri Sarada Mutt, Sri Chandrasekhara Bharathi Swamigal answers many nagging questions relating to individuals and society. This book is available for free reading in the following weblink of Sringeri Mutt:

The subject of "How to attain true Happiness?" is dealt with in the same book, which can be read in the following weblink:

People want more money because they think that will make them to be regarded higher by others. But what they don't realize is by that attitude they let others decide their happiness. Real happiness can only be had by right attitude and not by external things. But I agree we need to possess some amenities for a decent living. and as the article says beyond those comforts money is not helpful in increasing happiness. It may actually decrease happiness.
