இரவில் பல் விலக்கிப் படுத்தால், நன்றாகத் தூக்கம் வரும். முடிந்தவரை வெறும் கையால், உப்பு கலந்த நீரில் விளக்கவும். ஈறுகளுக்கு மசாஜ் செய்தல், பற்களுக்கு வலிமை தரும். தாடைக்குக் கீழ் தடவிக் கொடுத்தால், நன்றாகத் தூக்கம் வரும். தலையில் உச்சிக்கும், சுழிக்கும் நடுவில் மசாஜ் செய்தால், நன்றாகத் தூக்கம் வரும்.


நாம் தூங்கும் இடங்களில், இயற்கையான காற்றோட்டம் இருக்குமாறு பார்த்து கொள்ளுங்கள். இல்லையென்றால் இரவு முழுக்க கனவுகளால் அவதிப்படும் சுழல் உருவாகும். இரவில் எளிதில் ஜீரணமாக கூடிய உணவை உண்டால், தூக்கமின்மை தொந்தரவு ஏற்படாது. தலைவலி, உடல்வலி என்று எதெற்கெடுத்தாலும், ஒரு மாத்திரையை போட்டுக்கொள்வது நல்லதல்ல. எண்ணைக் குளியல், கஷாயம் போன்ற இயற்கை மருத்துவ முறையைப் பின்பற்றுவது நல்லது.

"Leg cramps can be caused by many conditions, ranging simply from dehydration to something much more serious such as kidney disease," said physical therapist Matthew Hyland, president of the New York Physical Therapy Association and co-owner of Rye Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation. "Cramps often result from vigorous exercise, trauma to the muscle, or keeping the leg in an awkward position for too long, such as sitting in a crowded theater. Other causes can include medications such as birth control, diuretics (which are often prescribed for people with high blood pressure) and steroids. A lack of potassium or calcium can also be the underlying cause, as well as cold weather."


Acute leg cramps frequently are confused with restless legs syndrome (RLS). But RLS is a different and more serious, chronic condition characterized by discomfort and persistent throbbing and pulling sensations in the legs.



How to Prevent Leg Cramps



There are a number ways you can alleviate nighttime leg cramps. "Once leg cramps set in, the best method to relieve them is movement, either walking around or simply jiggling or shaking your leg," advised Hyland. "In addition, things like pumping your ankles up and down or rubbing the muscles can help as well."


Some people with chronic leg cramps have found relief using cool compresses, which work by numbing pain and reducing soreness. But Hyland said anyone who regularly suffers leg cramps should also work to strengthen their muscles, which will make cramps less frequent.


"Our musculoskeletal system hits its peak at the age of 20, and while it maintains its peak for an additional 20 years, the reality is that it begins to break down at age 40," he said. "This includes muscles becoming less flexible. Once we pass into the fourth decade of life, it is critical we play an active role in stretching and strengthening our bodies to maintain appropriate, maximal health." He added that it may be best to consult a physician if leg cramps last for 5 to 10 minutes or occur multiple times a week.


What to Take for Muscle Cramps



Analgesic balm or a patch, both sold over-the-counter at pharmacies, can provide further relief. OTC pain relief medications that are formulated to treat menstrual cramps, such a Pamprin and Midol, can be an effective treatment for bad leg cramps.


You may also be able to prevent or alleviate muscle cramps in your legs by making simple lifestyle changes. Drinking plenty of water is essential, since cramps are often caused by dehydration. A healthy diet with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables can also help to decrease the frequency of leg cramps.


Vitamins and Minerals: Potassium and Magnesium for Muscle Cramps



Additionally, certain vitamins and minerals impact muscle function, particularly potassium and magnesium. A significant body of research has found that increasing your magnesium intake can help with the frequency of night time leg cramps, especially for pregnant women. Health experts recommend getting at least 300 milligrams of magnesium each day. A supplement can help you reach your daily allowance, but so can eating foods rich in magnesium, such as nuts, lentils, and quinoa.

Diabetes, often referred to by doctors as diabetes mellitus, describes a group of metabolic diseases in which the person has high blood glucose (blood sugar), either because insulin production is inadequate, or because the body's cells do not respond properly to insulin, or both. Patients with high blood sugar will typically experience polyuria (frequent urination), they will become increasingly thirsty (polydipsia) and hungry (polyphagia).

There are three types of diabetes:


1) Type 1 Diabetes

The body does not produce insulin. Some people may refer to this type as insulin-dependent diabetes, juvenile diabetes, or early-onset diabetes. People usually develop type 1 diabetes before their 40th year, often in early adulthood or teenage years.


Type 1 diabetes is nowhere near as common as type 2 diabetes. Approximately 10% of all diabetes cases are type 1.


Patients with type 1 diabetes will need to take insulin injections for the rest of their life. They must also ensure proper blood-glucose levels by carrying out regular blood tests and following a special diet.
Between 2001 and 2009, the prevalence of type 1 diabetes among the under 20s in the USA rose 23%, according to SEARCH for Diabetes in Youth data issued by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).

2) Type 2 Diabetes

The body does not produce enough insulin for proper function, or the cells in the body do not react to insulin (insulin resistance).


Approximately 90% of all cases of diabetes worldwide are of this type.

Some people may be able to control their type 2 diabetes symptoms by losing weight, following a healthy diet, doing plenty of exercise, and monitoring their blood glucose levels. However, type 2 diabetes is typically a progressive disease - it gradually gets worse - and the patient will probably end up have to take insulin, usually in tablet form.


Overweight and obese people have a much higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared to those with a healthy body weight. People with a lot of visceral fat, also known as central obesity, belly fat, or abdominal obesity, are especially at risk. Being overweight/obese causes the body to release chemicals that can destabilize the body's cardiovascular and metabolic systems.


Being overweight, physically inactive and eating the wrong foods all contribute to our risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Drinking just one can of (non-diet) soda per day can raise our risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 22%, researchers from Imperial College London reported in the journal Diabetologia. The scientists believe that the impact of sugary soft drinks on diabetes risk may be a direct one, rather than simply an influence on body weight.


The risk of developing type 2 diabetes is also greater as we get older. Experts are not completely sure why, but say that as we age we tend to put on weight and become less physically active. Those with a close relative who had/had type 2 diabetes, people of Middle Eastern, African, or South Asian descent also have a higher risk of developing the disease.


Men whose testosterone levels are low have been found to have a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Researchers from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, say that low testosterone levels are linked to insulin resistance

3) Gestational Diabetes

This type affects females during pregnancy. Some women have very high levels of glucose in their blood, and their bodies are unable to produce enough insulin to transport all of the glucose into their cells, resulting in progressively rising levels of glucose.


Diagnosis of gestational diabetes is made during pregnancy.


The majority of gestational diabetes patients can control their diabetes with exercise and diet. Between 10% to 20% of them will need to take some kind of blood-glucose-controlling medications. Undiagnosed or uncontrolled gestational diabetes can raise the risk of complications during childbirth. The baby may be bigger than he/she should be.


Scientists from the National Institutes of Health and Harvard University found that women whose diets before becoming pregnant were high in animal fat and cholesterol had a higher risk for gestational diabetes, compared to their counterparts whose diets were low in cholesterol and animal fats.

Controlling Diabetes - Treatment Is Effective And Important

All types of diabetes are treatable. Diabetes type 1 lasts a lifetime, there is no known cure. Type 2 usually lasts a lifetime, however, some people have managed to get rid of their symptoms without medication, through a combination of exercise, diet and body weight control.


Researchers from the Mayo Clinic Arizona in Scottsdale showed that gastric bypass surgery can reverse type 2 diabetes in a high proportion of patients. They added that within three to five years the disease recurs in approximately 21% of them. Yessica Ramos, MD., said "The recurrence rate was mainly influenced by a longstanding history of Type 2 diabetes before the surgery. This suggests that early surgical intervention in the obese, diabetic population will improve the durability of remission of Type 2 diabetes."


Patients with type 1 are treated with regular insulin injections, as well as a special diet and exercise.
Patients with Type 2 diabetes are usually treated with tablets, exercise and a special diet, but sometimes insulin injections are also required.

A new study published in Diabetes Care suggests that eating pistachios can have glucose- and insulin-lowering effects in people with prediabetes.



Pistachios may also help to reverse some other indicators of prediabetes, the study found, which could help promote a healthier metabolic profile overall.


Given that pistachios are also lower in calories than other nuts, said Dr. Arianna Carughi, nutrition consultant to American Pistachio Growers, they may be a good option for people trying to watch their waistlines.
Protein, fat and fiber

The health benefits of pistachios may come from a good combination of fat, protein and fiber - all of which can help lower blood sugar.


The study included 54 adults with prediabetes who were divided into two groups. The first group of participants ate two ounces of pistachios daily for four months, followed by a control diet of olive oil and other fats (instead of pistachios) for four months. The second group began with the control diet and then ate the pistachio diet.


"The researchers confirmed fasting blood sugar levels, insulin and hormonal markers decreased significantly during the pistachio diet compared to the control diet, where these levels and markers actually increased," a press release on the study stated. "Signs of inflammation were also reported to have decreased among the pistachio diet. In addition, neither group experienced weight gain."

There has been concern that using talcum powder on the genital area could increase the risk of ovarian cancer.

Scientists are trying to see if this is the case, but for now the evidence is still uncertain. However, even if there is a risk it is likely to be fairly small.
[h=2]What does the evidence say?[/h]

Cosmetic body and talcum powders often contain a mineral compound called talc. Several studies have looked at talcum powder use and ovarian cancer. While on the whole studies have seen a modest increase in the risk of ovarian cancer in women who use talc on their genitals, the evidence isn't completely clear. So we can't be sure whether or not talc itself could cause ovarian cancer.
[h=3]Stronger studies don’t find a link[/h] The majority of studies looking at talc and cancer relied on people remembering things they did a long time ago. These are called ‘case-control studies’, and many of them have found a link between talc and ovarian cancer.


But these studies also have important weaknesses. People may not accurately remember how much talc they used in the past, and women with ovarian cancer may be more likely to remember using talc than women who don't have cancer. This might skew the results.


Scientists can avoid these problems with studies that follow healthy women to see if those who use talc go on to develop ovarian cancer in the future. These are called 'cohort studies’ and they are generally thought to be a better way of finding out whether something affects the risk of cancer. So far there has only been one cohort study looking at talc and ovarian cancer - and it didn't find a link with ovarian cancers overall.
[h=3]The risk of ovarian cancer doesn’t increase when women use more talc[/h] If something truly causes cancer, you would expect people who are exposed to more of that thing to have a higher risk. For example, the more you smoke, the higher your risk of lung cancer. But the majority of the studies have not found a similar relationship for talc use and ovarian cancer.
[h=3]Using diaphragms (contraceptive caps) or condoms dusted with talc does not increase the risk of ovarian cancer[/h] Talc from these contraceptives will be placed closer to a woman’s ovaries during sex than it would if simply applied to the genital area. So the ovaries would be exposed to a higher concentration of talc. But studies haven't found an increased risk of ovarian cancer in woman who used talc on diaphragms.
[h=3]Direct application of talcum powder to the lungs does not cause cancer[/h] Talc is used in a medical technique called pleurodesis that can help relieve symptoms of some lung problems. Doctors apply sterile talc directly to the lining of the lungs in this technique. And there is no evidence that this direct application of talc to the body causes cancer.




[h=2]How could talcum powder cause cancer?[/h]

Before the 1970s, talcum powder was often contaminated with asbestos fibres which are known to cause cancer. But since then, all home products containing talcum powder are legally obliged to be asbestos-free.
Some scientists have suggested that talc particles could travel to the ovaries, irritate them and cause inflammation. Low-level, long-term inflammation may increase the risk of some types of cancer. But so far, it doesn’t look like using anti-inflammatory drugs can reduce the risk of ovarian cancer. And the evidence around whether talc could travel in this way is weak.




[h=2]Putting any risk into perspective[/h]

The ovarian cancer charity Ovacome have produced an excellent factsheet. They make a really important point that puts any potential risks from talc into perspective:
The evidence for a link is weak, but even if talc does increase the risk of ovarian cancer studies suggest it would be by around a third. This is a modest increase in risk and ovarian cancer is a relatively rare disease. Increasing a small risk by a third still gives a small risk.
[h=3]Ovarian cancer risk is affected by many things[/h] As with most cancers, the risk of ovarian cancer increases with age. And women with a family history of breast or ovarian cancer may also be more likely to develop ovarian cancer. If you think you might have a family history of cancer, it's a good idea to talk to your GP.


Things to do with childbearing and hormones are believed to play a role in ovarian cancer. Risk of ovarian cancer is lower the more children a woman has. And taking hormonal medications, such as the contraceptive Pill or Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), can also affect the risk.


Smoking also affects the risk of ovarian cancer and, unlike age or family history, it is something we can control. A Cancer Research UK study has estimated that each year around 200 UK cases of ovarian cancer could be prevented by not smoking. Preparing pumpkin seeds:




  1. Clean the seeds - You have to clean the seeds meticulously until there are no signs of pumpkin guts. The best way to do this is to put the seeds & guts into a big bowl of water and break it apart with your hands. The seeds will float to the top.
  2. Let it simmer for 10 minutes in salt water – Put the clean seeds in boiled water with 1tsp of salt and let it simmer for 10 minutes. This makes the seeds easier to digest.
  3. Drain the seeds and dry them out – they don’t have to be completely dry, but it’s recommended.
  4. Spread seeds on a baking sheet and drizzle with olive oil – Make sure they’re finely coated in oil and add a light sprinkle of salt. Then spread them and try avoiding the seeds from overlapping each other.
  5. Roast seeds at 325F for 10 minutes - Remove from oven and stir. Roast for another 8-10 minutes. During the last 5 minutes of roasting, open a few seeds to make sure that they’re not burning. Make sure they don’t brown.
