Brain Stroke: Symptoms And Everything You Need To Be Aware Of

Brain Stroke: Symptoms And Everything You Need To Be Aware Of

September 9, 2015

‘Heart Attacks’ may be common parlance now, but have you ever heard of a ‘Brain Attack’?

A Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA) or, more commonly, stroke is a condition where a part or the entire blood supply to the brain is compromised. There are two ways how this may happen – a hemorrhagic stroke because of bleeding into the brain, or an ischemic stroke, where the circulation is cut off due to blockage in an artery leading to the brain.

Risk factors for getting a stroke include non-modifiable ones such as age, sex (females more than males), race, and genetics, as well as lifestyle contributors such as alcohol intake, smoking, decreased physical activity and concurrent illnesses such as Diabetes and Hypertension.

Assessing your current risk and getting regular check-up done is the first step in stroke prevention

.
Worldwide, 15 million people suffer a stroke each year; one-third die and one-third are left permanently disabled. Within 5 years of a stroke, over half of patients aged ≥ 45 years will die.

Stroke incidence has declined by over 40% in the past four decades in high-income countries, but over the same period, it has doubled in low- and middle-income countries.

In India, the incidence varies across the country, but the rates have increased enough for it to be nicknamed a ‘silent epidemic.’
As a stroke involves blood vessels and the brain, it requires a multi-disciplinary approach.

Since the brain is very susceptible to low oxygen levels, the more the delay in treatment, the more irreversible and extensive the damage becomes. A lot of peripheral centers may lack the appropriate facilities, so it is essential that you know what to do in case you, or anyone among your friends of family face the following:
Common Stroke Warning Signs and Symptoms:

• Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm, or leg—especially on one side of the body
.
• Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding.

• Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes.

• Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination.

• Sudden severe headache with no known cause.

The American Heart Association recommends the public act ‘FAST’, to suspect if someone has a stroke:

1. Face: Does their face droop to one side?

2. Arm: Does their arm drift downward on one side?

3. Speech: Ask them to talk, are they mumbling?

4. Time: Notice any of these signs? Time to call the ambulance immediately.
A stroke is an emergency and needs treatment within 3 hours of onset of symptoms, for chance of full recovery.

Call an ambulance or rush the individual to the nearest tertiary-care hospital immediately. With timely intervention and the up-to-date care, a stroke no longer needs to be a death sentence, but a challenge to overcome!

No More Needles? This Laser Can Monitor Your Blood Sugar

No More Needles? This Laser Can Monitor Your Blood Sugar

July 15, 2015

A laser that doesn't penetrate the skin could replace painful finger pricking for diabetics.

The new technology, developed by a team at the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom, incorporates low-powered lasers in a small device that enables continuous blood sugar monitoring. Without the need for an implant, the device may be an ideal type of technology to develop into a wearable system.

"As well as being a replacement for finger-prick testing, this technology opens up the potential for people with diabetes to receive continuous readings, meaning they are instantly alerted when intervention is needed," said Gin Jose, developer of the technology and professor at the University of Leeds.
A device that suits your lifestyle

The glass used in the sensors, Jose said, acts in a similar way as glass used in smartphones, making it more affordable than some other types of self-monitoring systems.

The team aims to develop two types of devices for consumers: one that is a finger-touch system and another that is a continuous wearable system for ongoing monitoring.

The pilot clinical trial suggests the technology can perform as well as conventional systems, but more research will be done to further develop the product before it's available to consumers.

Adjusting Cabin Pressure Eases Air Passenger Discomfort

Adjusting Cabin Pressure Eases Air Passenger Discomfort

WEDNESDAY, July 4 (HealthDay News) -- The discomfort some passengers feel on airplanes could be due to the air pressure settings inside cabins, a new study finds.

Most aircraft cabins are pressurized to 8,000 feet above sea level, an altitude that lowers the amount of oxygen in the blood by about 4 percentage points, researchers say.

This decrease in oxygen saturation isn't enough to bring on acute mountain sickness, but pressurizing the cabin to 6,000 feet could help some passengers feel better when flying, concludes a study in the July 5 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

"We found that the altitudes did not affect the occurrence of acute mountain sickness syndrome, but it did affect discomfort," said the study's lead author, Dr. J. Michael Muhm, senior occupation physician for Boeing Commercial Airplanes in Seattle, which funded the study. "There was no difference in the likelihood of discomfort at ground level and 6,000 feet, but the likelihood increased between 6,000 and 8,000 feet."
He added, "We concluded that passenger and crew comfort would be enhanced" if the cabin was pressurized to 6,000 feet during long-duration flights.

Most commercial aircraft are pressurized to 6,000 to 8,000 feet, not sea level.

"In order to pressurize at ground level, we would have to increase the weight of the aircraft tremendously, because the material as it exists right now couldn't tolerate pressure at ground level," explained Dr. Claude Thibeault, medical director of the International Air Transport Association in Montreal. "We would have to increase fuel, decrease passengers. So, it's an operational sort of factor."

And 8,000 feet, the maximum allowed, is also physiologically acceptable for "normal" people, he added.
"The average Joe in good condition could tolerate 8,000 feet without health effects," Thibeault said. But he noted, "They didn't say without discomfort."

Short-haul flights are usually pressurized at 5,000 to 6,000 feet while long-haul flights are closer to 8,000 feet, according to Thibeault.

But acute mountain sickness, which can involve headache, nausea and vomiting, can occur at altitudes of 6,500 feet and higher.

The authors of the study wanted to see, among other things, if airplane travelers were prone to mountain sickness.

To that end, 502 adult volunteers participated in a 20-hour simulated flight to determine the effect of barometric pressures equivalent to altitudes of 650, 4,000, 6,000, 7,000 and 8,000 feet above sea level on arterial oxygen saturation and the occurrence of acute mountain sickness and discomfort.

Mean oxygen saturation went down as the altitude increased, eventually reaching a maximum decrease of 4.4 percentage points at 8,000 feet.

Acute mountain sickness occurred in 7.4 percent of participants, but the incidence did not vary between the different altitudes.

Discomfort rose with increasing altitude and was greater at 7,000 to 8,000 feet than at all the other altitudes combined. Discomfort became apparent 3 to 9 hours into the "flight."

Older people (over 60) were less likely to report discomfort than younger people, and men seemed more affected than women.

"There were no health effects, but the discomfort was there," Thibeault said. "What they were trying to do in this study is isolate one factor, which is altitude, so you can't blame these effects on other factors."

Next week, Boeing plans to launch its newest aircraft, the 787, with cabins pressurized to 6,000 feet.

"The 787 is one of our first airplanes with the fuselage made out of composites rather than aluminum, a structure that allows us to pressurize to 6,000 feet," said Jeanne Yu, director of environmental performance for Boeing. "The findings of this study, as well as the development of materials technology, enable us to fly the 787."

But she added, changing cabin pressures in existing aircraft is not that simple because of their aluminum structures.

"Airplanes are designed to withstand the continuous pressurization/depressurization cycles that occur in takeoffs and landings throughout their service life. To lower the maximum cruise cabin altitude, the pressure difference must be increased between the interior and exterior of the airplane. This change would fatigue (wear out) the structure more rapidly and impact the airplane's service life in an uncertain way, perhaps even compromising the design integrity of the airplane," she said.

Cabin air pressure

Although aircraft cabins are pressurized, cabin air pressure at cruising altitude is lower than air pressure at sea level. At typical cruising altitudes in the range 11 000–12 200 m (36 000–40 000 feet), air pressure in the cabin is equivalent to the outside air pressure at 1800–2400 m (6000–8000 feet) above sea level. As a consequence, less oxygen is taken up by the blood (hypoxia) and gases within the body expand. The effects of reduced cabin air pressure are usually well tolerated by healthy passengers.

Oxygen and hypoxia

Cabin air contains ample oxygen for healthy passengers and crew. However, because cabin air pressure is relatively low, the amount of oxygen carried in the blood is reduced compared with that at sea level. Passengers with certain medical conditions, particularly heart and lung diseases and blood disorders such as anaemia (in particular sickle-cell anaemia), may not tolerate this reduced oxygen level (hypoxia) very well. Some of these passengers are able to travel safely if arrangements are made with the airline for the provision of an additional oxygen supply during flight. However, because regulations and practices differ from country to country and between airlines, it is strongly recommended that these travellers, especially those wishing to carry their own oxygen, contact the airline early in their travel plans. An additional charge is often levied on passengers who require supplemental oxygen to be provided by the airline.

Gas expansion

As the aircraft climbs in altitude after take-off, the decreasing cabin air pressure causes gases to expand. Similarly, as the aircraft descends in altitude before landing, the increasing pressure in the cabin causes gases to contract. These changes may have effects where air is trapped in the body.

Passengers often experience a “popping” sensation in the ears caused by air escaping from the middle ear and the sinuses during the aircraft’s climb. This is not usually considered a problem. As the aircraft descends in altitude prior to landing, air must flow back into the middle ear and sinuses in order to equalize pressure. If this does not happen, the ears or sinuses may feel as if they are blocked and pain can result. Swallowing, chewing or yawning (“clearing the ears”) will usually relieve any discomfort. As soon as it is recognized that the problem will not resolve itself using these methods, a short forceful expiration against a pinched nose and closed mouth (Valsalva manoeuvre) should be tried and will usually help. For infants, feeding or giving a pacifier (dummy) to stimulate swallowing may reduce the symptoms.

Individuals with ear, nose and sinus infections should avoid flying because pain and injury may result from the inability to equalize pressure differences. If travel cannot be avoided, the use of decongestant nasal drops shortly before the flight and again before descent may be helpful.

As the aircraft climbs, expansion of gas in the abdomen can cause discomfort, although this is usually mild.

Some forms of surgery (e.g. abdominal surgery) and other medical treatments or tests (e.g. treatment for a detached retina) may introduce air or other gases into a body cavity. Travellers who have recently undergone such procedures should ask a travel medicine physician or their treating physician how long they should wait before undertaking air travel.

It is a common misconception that PCOS is all about cysts but it is in fact a characteristic amalgamation of cosmetic, gynecological and metabolic symptoms.
Cosmetic symptoms include facial hair, thinning of the scalp and acne.

Gynecological symptoms include irregular or scanty periods which are usually the first red flag in adolescents.

Infertility and recurrent pregnancy loss affects the women in the reproductive age. PCOS in older women could even lead to cancer of the uterus, cardiac disease and type 2 diabetes. Hence it is important to manage the symptom along with proper diet and exercise. Awareness and accurate diagnosis is the first step in managing PCOS in a way that it improves quality of life of the patient. Women with PCOS may have enlarged ovaries that contain small collection of fluids called cyst. The cysts are not harmful, but can lead to hormonal imbalances.

1. Follow a low-carb and low-fat diet.
2. Eat more protein.
3. Opt for roasted snacks over fried ones.
4. Eat dinner before 7 pm.
5. Don’t forget to exercise!
6. Aim to lose 5% of your weight to begin with.

Obesity

Obesity

images

What is obesity?

Obesity is defined as a condition of excess bodyweight and fat. The size and number of fat cells increase in obese people. A person is said to be obese when the body weight is 20% or more above ideal body weight, which can be calculated by comparing his height and sex.

What are the causes?

Dietaryand life style practices are directly related to obesity. The most important cause is the imbalance between the energy intake and output. Energy is obtained from the food one eats and is required to carry out the daily activities, and the body functions, which are going on even when one is sleeping. The extra energy which is not used by the body is stored as fat. Eating more than one need causes obesity because the excess energy supplied to the body gets converted into fat. On the expenditure side, if a person is physically less active then less energy is utilised and more is converted to fat.

Home, work and school are barriers to opportunities for active lifestyle. Children of obese parents are 10 times likely to be obese than those of non-obese parents. This is mostly environmental since the children and parents share the same dietary habits. Genes influence how the body burns calories or stores fat. In some rare cases, hormonal imbalance, such as overactivity of the adrenal glands or underactivity of the thyroid gland, can also cause obesity. Injury or inflammation of the hypothalamus can interfere with the appetite centre and thereby cause obesity.

What are the symptoms?
The signs of obesity include body fat and weight more than the ideal body weight.

What are the risks of obesity?
Obesity is a serious condition as it increases the risk of heart diseases, diabetes, joint pains, high blood pressure and some types of cancers such as colon, breast and uterine cancers. Obese people are also more prone to diseases and problems such as stroke, gall bladder disease, breathing problems (sleep apnoea syndrome), low back pain, swelling of the feet and ankles, imbalances and accidents. Obese people have a low self-esteem and they avoid company, which makes them insular and insecure.

How is it diagnosed?

Obesity is determined by measuring body weight and fat. There are different ways of calculating body fat. Body mass index (BMI) is one of the best methods used to measure body fat. BMI is calculated as the ratio of the weight in Kg and height in square metre. Guidelines define overweight as a BMI between 25 and 29.9 kg/square meter and obesity as a BMI greater than 30. The doctor may also suggest blood test for sugar, cholesterol, and triglycerides. In case insufficient thyroid functioning (hypothyroidism) is suspected, the doctor will ask for a thyroid stimulating hormone test.

What is the treatment?

The
simplest and the most basic principle is to reduce food intake, especially the fat content, and increasing physical activity. Increasing physical activity alone is not an easy way to lose weight unless one combines it with a reduction of fat intake. Physical activity includes walking, jogging, swimming, cycling, aerobics or any other household activity such as cleaning, washing, climbing stairs etc. The sense of well-being and weight loss motivates an individual to make changes in his or her diet as well. The best way of keeping a good control on ones dietary intake is to keep a daily diary, and writing down whatever one eats as one eats. Avoid high oil content in the curries and do not use butter on chappatis, which may be tasty without the fat. The doctor or health care provider evaluates the daily diet and plans a diet providing calories enough to maintain the weight below the ideal body weight.

Increase your physical; activity and reduce the intake of food. Your initial goal of weight loss therapy should be to reduce the bodyweight by 10% from baseline. With success, further weight loss can be attempted. Weight loss should be 1-2 kg for 6 months. Reducing dietary fat alone without reducing calories is not sufficient for weight loss. Reducing dietary fat along with dietary carbohydrates can help reduce calories.Weight maintenance program should be priory after 6 months.

In order to maintain one's weight, calories consumed should be equal to calories used. Energy balance is like a scale. When calories consumed are more than calories used, it results in weight gain. Let physical activity tip the scale in your favour. You can perform aerobic exercises 30 minutes a day thrice week. Avoid a sedentary lifestyle.

Certain medicines are also available for weight reduction. There are two main types of weight reducing drugs: one class decreases appetite while the other prevents dietary fat from being absorbed by the body. These drugs should be taken only with doctor”s advice, as there are a lot of side effects related with their use. Surgery to cure obesity should be undertaken as the last resort for people who are very obese, have tried all the other options available and have medical problems. The main surgical option is to have your stomach banded or stapled so that it cannot accommodate more food. Why not eat less voluntarily?

Few tips to bring about weight loss as well as ensuring good health:

  • Eat plenty of vegetables, fruits, and grain products like wheat.
  • Increase the consumption of complex carbohydrates like whole wheat, millet (jowar) and barley (bajra)

  • Restrict refined products such as flour (maida) and its products such as bread, noodles, macaronis and pastas in regular diet
  • Restrict fat and cholesterol rich foods. Only non-vegetarian foods (like eggs and dairy products) are good sources of cholesterol, however saturated fatty acids present in butter, ghee, vanaspati and coconut get metabolised to cholesterol in our body
  • Reduce the amount of sugars consumed
  • Consume raw fruits and vegetables in form of salads and raitas in every meal. These provide adequate vitamins, minerals and fibre. Fibre is essential as it aids in digestion, has an effective role in managing obesity and cardiovascular problems

  • Limit salt intake
  • Have small portions of food at a time
  • Do not skip meals
  • Have regular meal timings
  • Do not eat while cooking and watching television
  • Drink plenty of water (6-8 glasses) in a day
  • Exercise regularly. Do brisk walking at least for 20-40 minutes in a day

best exercises that are sustainable and safe to loose weight are
aerobic exercises. Aerobic exercises usually involve vigorous exercises sustained over a period of several minutes and their effect is to increase the efficiency of the lungs, heart and blood circulation, which are collectively known as the aerobic system. Short and sharp bursts of activity which rely on the body”s reserves of oxygen do not produce a similar improvement.

Exercises should increase strength and mobility and also aid relaxation. You can choose walking, swimming, bicycling as per your fitness level and increase gradually. You should plan on 20-minute sessions at least 3 times per week. Gradual changes in eating habits will help encourage a permanent lifestyle change. A slow weight loss of 1 or 2 pounds a week, until the desirable body weight is reached, is best.

Superbrain Yoga: 3 Minutes That Maximize Brain Power

Superbrain Yoga: 3 Minutes That Maximize Brain Power

A baby is born into the world with around 100 billion brain cells (neurons), give or take a few million. The brain is so important to the human species that four weeks after conception, an embryo produces half a million neurons every minute.

In fully developed humans, a complex system of 300 million neurons connects the brain’s right and left sides, but they are so minuscule that 30,000 of them can fit on a pinhead.
To make the most of one’s brain, it needs to be exercised and nurtured, just like every other muscle of the human body. Synapses – points of the brain connections – have to be created and conserved for the brain to stay alert and healthy throughout adulthood.

How can a parent ensure their child’s development is constantly improving during school? What could a parent of a learning disabled child do to help them develop?
One option is Superbrain Yoga. This simple squat exercise offers benefits not just for young students, but also adults seeking brain wellness into their senior years and patients with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Down Syndrome, Alzheimer’s, or other development challenges and cognitive delays seeking normalcy and cures.

The Science Behind Superbrain Yoga

Based on the research of Dr. Joie P. Jones of the Dept. of Radiological Sciences at the University of California, the exercise works using the body’s energy centres which absorb, digest, and distribute energy to different parts of the body.

These primary energy centres are actually major acupuncture points. Acupressure energy points for the brain, eyes, forehead, mouth, ovaries, parotid, temples, and testes congregate around the area of the ear affected by pressure from the exercise.

In addition, the finger pads used in the exercise stimulate neuropathways into the brain by activating acupuncture points on the earlobes.

According to Dr. Jones, after doing the exercise, an EEG scan shows the right and left hemispheres of the brain have synchronized.
When done correctly, the Superbrain Yoga exercise helps the energy trapped in the lower energy centres move up through the physical body’s other major centres.

As the energy travels upwards, it passes through the practitioner’s heart centre and fills it with feelings of calm and inner peace.

When the energy moves up further into the throat and beyond, the practitioner’s intelligence and creativity are improved. Other benefits include regulation of the sex drive, which is especially important for teenagers.
We are a culture accustomed to exercising to get fit, but with the power of the Supebrain Yoga squat we can now become brighter in the process! Prolonged practice of the Superbrain Yoga makes the practitioner, in general, smarter and more psychologically balanced.

How To Energize & Activate The Brain

To ensure you achieve maximum benefits:

1. Face East. For the elderly, face North.

2. Remove any jewelry and connect your tongue to the roof of your mouth. Leave it there throughout the exercise.

3. Take your left hand, cross your upper body to take hold of your right earlobe with thumb and forefinger. Make sure that the thumb is in front.
Screen-Shot-2015-09-03-at-2.56.09-PM.png
4. Now take your right hand across your upper body to take hold of your left earlobe. Again, make sure that the thumb is in front. At this point you’re pressing both earlobes simultaneously. Make sure your left arm is close to your chest and inside your right arm.
Screen-Shot-2015-09-03-at-2.58.07-PM.png

5. Inhale through your nose and slowly squat down to the ground

.
6. Hold your breath and exhale as you start making your way back up to a standing position.

7. Repeat this squatting action 14 times. Remember to keep holding your earlobes and to keep your tongue touching the roof of your mouth throughout the entire exercise.

When To Expect The Results

To maximize the benefits of this practice, make it a fun daily habit with your child when getting ready for school or even after school when they need a re-charge. For teenagers, the best way is to lead by example and also make the first 30 days a together practice (proven by first-hand experience). You will start to see results in the first three months of daily repetition, and in seven months your child will improve their cognitive abilities (and average in school) by 20 – 35%, but by that time what once was just an exercise will become a great habit you’ll want to keep all your life – one that will ensure your next generations grow up healthy and smart.

Green chilli and weight loss

Spicing up meals with Green chilli can be a good idea without the need to feel guilty over the indulgence. This vegetable not only adds taste to the blend food, it has the potential to increase our metabolism significantly.

Increase in metabolism is associated with fat burning. When the fat burns, weight loss comes naturally. It helps to reduce our appetite too. The advantages are numerous.

Nutrition value of chilli is high as it contains adequate amount of nutrients. Green chilli is a superb healthy food with high concentration of Vitamin C. It also contains important minerals like potassium, iron and copper. It adds up to your vitamin and mineral requirements of the day without giving you excess calories. Calories in chilli are negligible.

However, caution is required during eating as excess of chill can cause inflammation and stomach ulcers. It is best to eat a very small amount which is comfortable to your body type. If you already have stomach cancer or ulcer, it is best to avoid chillies completely. It is best to wash your hands after touching it as chilli hands in eyes can cause burning sensation.

Four Remarkable Health Benefits of Turmeric

Four Remarkable Health Benefits of Turmeric

Sep 14, 2015

Turmeric-4.jpg

Recent research has shown that turmeric contains a compound known as curcumin, which has many medicinal benefits. lists out four remarkable health benefits of turmeric, and what just a pinch a day can do for us.

1. Purificatory Health Benefits of Turmeric
Turmeric purifies the blood and brings translucence to your energies. Turmeric not only works on the physiology, but also has a big impact on your energy system. It purifies the blood, body, and energy system. For external purification, just take a small pinch of turmeric, put it into a bucket of water and pour it over your body – you will see, the body will be vibrant and glowing.

2. Anti-phlegm Health Benefits of Turmeric

Those who suffer from cold related diseases and find their nostrils blocked every morning, will benefit a lot from the consumption of neem, pepper, honey and turmeric. Crush about 10 to 12 pepper corns roughly and soak them in a couple of spoons of honey overnight (about 8 to 12 hours). In the morning you consume this and just chew upon the pepper. Mixing some turmeric with the honey should also work. If you avoid all dairy products, your phlegm will go down naturally.

3. Anti-cancer Health Benefits of Turmeric

Cancer is not a disease, it’s your own body working against you; certain cells have turned against you. Periodic cleansing of the body is good to prevent this from happening. Consumption of turmeric on an empty stomach is a very effective cleanser. This may not be effective after you get cancer, but otherwise, swallowing a marble-sized turmeric ball and neem ball, first thing in the morning acts as a great cleanser and takes away the cancerous cells in your body.

4. Benefits of Turmeric for Yogic Sadhana

Everything you borrow from the earth, including your body, has a certain inertia. It is important to be conscious of this and to keep the inertia levels at the minimum. When we gauge whether your sadhana is working or not by looking at how much you sleep and how alert you are, we are checking how much inertia you generate. The inertia levels will increase if the body does not allow a certain amount of energy to enter the cellular level. Neem and turmeric as a combination dilate the cellular structure of the body in such a way that it allows energy to enter and fill up every crevice. Neem and turmeric are a physical support towards that, but sadhana itself does it too.

You can generate enormous energy by means other than sadhana, such as stimulants – like a strong cup of coffee or nicotine but it will not dilate the cellular structure and allow the energy to enter the system to be stored and released over a long period of time. When, instead of being stored, energy finds expression right there, it becomes destructive – not only for the body, but also for the mind, for the activity that you perform, and for the world around you. When we generate energy in the body, it is important that it does not simply burst out but that we are able to hold it and release it by choice.
The consumption of neem and turmeric with tepid, light honey water is a wonderful way of cleansing and dilating the cellular structure in such a way that it is able to absorb energy. When you do sadhana, the dilation brings flexibility to the muscles. The flexibility helps you to slowly build the system into a more powerful possibility. You will feel it – as you do your asanas, the body will crackle with a different kind of energy.

Vitamin Overdose: Taking Too Many Vitamins Can Be Bad For Your Health

Vitamin Overdose: Taking Too Many Vitamins Can Be Bad For Your Health

Dec 26, 2014

One wouldn’t take an antibiotic without being sick, but for some reason countless individuals are taking vitamins despite having no deficiencies. While in most cases this is simply a waste of money and the extra vitamins are simply flushed out in urine, for those who take large quantities of unnecessary vitamins, the health consequences are serious. But just how many vitamins does it take to kill a person?

Vitamins are organic compounds needed in small quantities to sustain life, Medical News Today reported. We normally get the necessary amount from our daily diet, but sometimes, due to dietary restraints, individuals will develop vitamin deficiencies. However, Marissa Puleo, a registered diectian working in Pennsylvania, told Medical Daily that one needs to be careful with vitamin intake.

"Taking too many vitamins and supplements does have negative consequences," Puleo said. Although many water soluable vitamins are excreted when too much is taken, others remain in the body. "These vitamins can reach toxic levels and cause adverse side effects."

Iron

Anemia is a condition when one doesn’t have enough healthy red blood cells to carry adequate oxygen to your tissues. It’s more common among women and can cause symptoms such as fatigue and feeling weak. Do not self-diagnose your anemia and especially don’t self-treat it. Unnecessary iron can accumulate in the body and even rise to toxic levels. Taking more than the recommended amount of iron over time can cause brown skin discoloration, an enlarged liver or spleen, abdominal pain, congestive heart failure, an irregular heart rhythm, and insulin dependent diabetes, just to name a few.

Excessive amounts of iron are especially common in pregnant women. A recent study by a team of doctors in India found that excessive iron dosage among healthy non-anemic women could lead to problems, including low birth weight, premature birth, and poor growth of the baby while in the womb.

Lisha Shastri, a final year MBBS student and one of the lead researchers on the study, explained to the Bangalore Mirror that her findings suggest the need for women without anemia to stay away from additional iron supplements, especially during pregnancy.

“Iron in high daily doses could be responsible for cellular damage through oxidative stress,” Shastri said. “This needs to be balanced with sufficient anti-oxidants, which can be obtained from fruits rich in vitamin C. The dosage of iron varies from one individual to another, which is why there cannot be a standardized dosage that can be fixed for everyone."

Often women who are menstruating or women who partake in particularly strenuous sports, such as distance runners, are at greater risks for iron deficiencies, but there are many ways to introduce more iron into your diet without using supplements. Meat and eggs are particularly high in iron, and for vegetarians, beans and tofu are also great sources of the vitamin.

How Much Can Kill You

As reported by Livestrong, a one-time overdose of iron can kill you. The limit for iron intake is put at around 20mg of elemental iron per kilogram of body weight. Any more than this and a person may experience abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, rapid breathing, and coma.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is arguably one of the most popular and widely recognized of all vitamins. Deficiencies of vitamin C can cause tooth lose, acne, fatigue, and even death. Taking vitamin C to help fight off a cold is also recommended by doctors. Still, despite all this there is still such a thing as having too much of it.

Unless you have a cold or it’s recommended by doctors, you’re safer getting your daily dose of vitamin C in food. Citrus fruits, berries, and vegetables such as broccoli and Brussels sprouts have high levels, the University of Maryland Medical Center advises. Also, many foods such as cereal and drinks are actually fortified with vitamin C, so chances are you’re probably getting the recommended amount without even realizing it.

How Much Can Kill You

The good news is that overdoing it on vitamin C will not kill you. Around 2,000mg of vitamin C is considered the limit. For those who consume this amount in a day, symptoms such as vomiting, heartburn, headache, insomnia, and kidney stones may follow. However, anything over 1,000mg can lead to diarrhea.

Vitamin A

Vitamin A is known for promoting good vision but also helps to form and maintain healthy skin, teeth, skeletal and soft tissue, and the mucous membrane. Medline Plus reports that individuals who do not get enough vitamin A are more likely to get infectious disease and vision problems.

A high dose of vitamin A can cause the following side effects: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, tiredness, headaches, dizziness, blurred vision, poor muscle coordination, itchiness and scaling of the skin, bone pain, hair loss, irregular menstruation in women, osteoporosis, and temporary or permanent liver damage. High doses of vitamin A are also known to increase the risk of lung cancer in smokers, the BBC reported.
Acute hypervitaminosis is a severe condition resulting from consuming too much vitamin A during a short period of time. It was first documented in arctic explorers who unknowingly consumed vitamin A-rich livers of many artic animals, such as seals, husky dogs, and yes, even the polar bear. The symptoms of the extremely unpleasant condition are loss of skin and hair, liver damage, hemorrhage, coma, and even death.

How Much Can Kill You

The problem with vitamin A is that unlike other vitamins, excess amounts don’t flush out in urine but rather build up in the liver. However, unless you’re eating polar bear liver, it’s unlikely you’ll consume enough vitamin A to kill you. According to the San Francisco Gate, 3,000mg of vitamin A a day is the limit and any more can have unpleasant consequences. To put that into perspective, that’s around 79 to 115 chickens eggs, according to How Stuff Works.

Gummy Multivitamins

In an article published by BuzzFeed earlier this year, Dr. Ken Spaeth from North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System explained that in high quantities those gummy fruity vitamin supplements are no good for your health.

“On the whole, it would be a very bad idea and potentially dangerous to take excessive amounts of multivitamins, even tasty ones such as the gummy variety,” Spaeth said. “While the recommended amounts pose virtually no risk, consuming an entire bottle of vitamins can cause permanent and serious harm,” Spaeth said. “The body is not able to clear excessive amounts of this type quickly, and the subsequent buildup of high levels can inflict an array of injury to various organ systems, including the brain.”

How Much Can Kill You

The article noted that, theoretically, consuming the entire bottle of gummy supplements in one sitting could kill you; however, this is largely dependent on the type of vitamins present.

In conclusion, Puleo gave Medical Daily one rule of thumb to go by when it comes to monitoring your vitamin intake: "Eating a varied nutrious diet is the best source of any vitamin or mineral. If you want to increase vitamin C, it's sggested to eat more citrus rather than take a vitamin C pill."

The Ayurvedic Way to Drink Water

The Ayurvedic Way to Drink Water

Human body consists of 50-70% water. Our body continuously needs water to perform all the activities and functions; therefore drinking water is very good for health.

Ayurveda has laid down some essential guidelines for drinking water to help improve your health and to prevent any ailments due to the improper water drinking habits.

The Ayurvedic Way to Drink Water

1. It is better to drink water while sitting than while standing.

2. You should drink it slowly and avoid gulping down large volumes of water in a single breath.

3. Tepid water is best to drink and it is advised to avoid drinking ice cold water.

4. It is best to drink when you are feeling thirsty. When you listen to thirst cues and sip water throughout the day you’ll be drinking the right amount.

5. You should stop drinking water after you feel satiated as it is a signal from your body to stop drinking.

6. The color of your urine may indicate whether you are sufficiently hydrated or not. The color of your urine should be fairly clear and straw colored. Dark yellow urine may indicate a sign of dehydration.

7. Dry chapped lips may also indicate the lack of sufficient water being supplied to your body.

8. Normally the minimum gap between food and water should be between 1.5 to 2.5 hrs. Though it may vary according to different geographic locations, as the body’s ability to digest food depends on external factors like the outside temperature.

9. Though very contradictory, but the right time to drink water while taking food is to drink just the required amount of water, along with your food rather than drinking water before or after food.

10. If really thirsty, one can have fresh fruit juice after morning meal, buttermilk after lunchand milk after dinner. Though these also contain mostly water, the properties are completely different and are good for our digestive system.

11. Ushapan is a famous Ayurvedic practice of drinking water in the morning. A regular ushapaan helps in keeping the body healthy. It also helps to get rid of many diseases and disorders like headaches, blood pressure, anemia, obesity, arthritis etc.

Why Shouldn’t You Drink Water After Meal According to Ayurveda?

Ayurveda strictly prohibits drinking water at the end of a meal as it kills the energy required by our digestive system to process the ingested food.

This allows the food to remain in our system for longer duration which may cause the food to rot inside our system, instead of getting digested, which may lead to the formation of gas and acidity problems.

Never Ignore this Early Signs of Ovarian Cancer – Symptoms and Signs !

Never Ignore this Early Signs of Ovarian Cancer – Symptoms and Signs !

August 21, 2015

Women in Europe, especially from the regions in Eastern and Northern Europe have the highest rate of woman indicated and suffering from ovarian cancer. In 2012 there were 65 000 patients, so the disease became the sixth most common cancer in women in Europe. About 250,000 women develop cancer every year. Only 50% of the women diagnosed with ovarian cancer survive five years after the initial diagnosis. This is because the cancer is in advanced stage. With early detection, however, this percent can increase up to 95%

Ovarian cancer can be developing in women at any age, but it is more likely to occur in women who are 50 or older. More than half of the cases are women at the age of 65 and older. Industrialized countries have the highest incidence of ovarian cancer. Women with white skin are at a slightly higher risk; African-American and Asian women are at lower risk.

The risk of developing the disease increases with the age. Ovarian cancer is the fifth most common cancer in American women and the second most common gynecological cancer. That is 4% of all cases of cancer in women. However, the death rate for ovarian cancer is higher than for any other cancer in women, because it is not early detected.

Symptoms and Signs

Usually there are no early signs of the disease. Ovarian cancer is often referred to as a silent killer, because women are either not aware of having it, or they have symptoms that are not accurately diagnosed until the disease is in a progressive stage.

The following symptoms are measured as warning signs of ovarian cancer, but there may be many other causes.

Digestive symptoms such as gases, indigestion, constipation or a feeling of fullness after a light meal, bloating, cramps, and abdominal discomfort.

-Pelvic pressure or frequent urination

-Unexplained changes in the bowel

-Nausea or vomiting

-Abdominal pain or swelling

-Loss of appetite (anorexia)

-Fatigue

-Unexplained weight loss or weight gain

-Pain during intercourse

-Vaginal bleeding in post-menopausal women

Causes

The real causes of ovarian cancer still remain unknown, but couple factors are known to increase the chances of developing the disease.

These are the groups of women who are more likely to develop ovarian cancer:

-Women who have never been pregnant or had children

-White women, especially in Northern Europe

-Women over 50; Half of the diagnosed cases are women over 65.

-Women who have a family history of breast, ovarian, endometrial (uterus), prostate or colon cancer

-Women who had breast cancer

-Women who have a first-degree relative (mother, daughter, sister) diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

-Women with genetic mutation in BRCA1 or BRCA2. (Not all women with these genetic mutations of breast cancer will develop ovarian cancer)

Finding

So far there are no tests that can dependably indicate if a lady has an early-arrange ovarian tumor. Some symptomatic techniques incorporate a careful bimanual pelvic examination, diagnostic laparoscopy, and various-ray procedures.

An ultrasound can be made through the abdomen and the lower pelvic district or with a transvaginal test. Low GI arrangement or barium bowel purge include arrangement of X-beams to highlight alternate organs. CA-125 blood test is utilized to focus the level of CA-125, a tumor marker.

High mindfulness among ladies and their gynecologists is more than should be expected. They must be mindful that normal checkups, particularly in instances of bloating can identify and analyze disease at an early stage when it can be really cured.

Women, who are at high danger risk because of a family history, ought to do customary checkups. In spite of the fact that there is no solid proof, in terms of treating menopausal side effects, ladies are informed to utilize the most minimal dosage concerning hormone substitution treatment in the briefest period conceivable.

Treating

There are various treatments. According to the specialists, women diagnosed with ovarian cancer are usually advised to do a surgery, which involves removal of the uterus, tubes, ovaries. If the cancer has metastasized, the surgery may include removing of other tissues in the abdomen and pelvis, as well as parts of the colon.

Specialists explain that chemotherapy is usually given after surgery to stop the recurrence of cancer, but it is also given to reduce the cancer before surgery, especially in advanced cases. It is also used if the disease has reoccurred.

Most regimes are based on platinum agents, and there are many target-therapies. In many countries specialists practice antibodies that hinderthe blood flow to the cancer. Chemotherapy can be inserted directly into the abdomen. Many studies have confirmed the positive effect of this hyperthermic peritoneal chemotherapy during surgery.

Radiotherapy is rarely used for ovarian cancer, but it can be applied in the late stage of the disease in order to reduce pain and bleeding

Check Your Eyelids for Signs of a Heart Attack

Check Your Eyelids for Signs of a Heart Attack

2ND SEPTEMBER 2015

A health condition known as xanthelasma (xanthelasma palpebrarum), a yellowish deposit of fat underneath your skin, usually on or around the eyelids, has been linked to heart disease. These yellow formations occur in the upper or lower eyelid near the inner corner of the eye.
The link between heart disease and xanthelasma

Check Your Eyelids for Signs of a Heart AttackBoth men and women can suffer from this condition, especially after 40. These yellow growths are the result of cholesterol deposits and indicate a higher level of cholesterol in almost half of the patients affected with this condition.

These growths are soft and painless and do not affect vision. In fact, people with xanthelasma usually seek medical help because these growths are unattractive. Aesthetics is the main reason why people decide to remove them, without considering them as a warning of a more serious condition, and despite their re-emergence after removal.

Scientific evidence

A recent Danish research confirmed the connection between heart disease and xanthelasma. Professor Tibjaerg Hansen who led the team, came to conclusions that will change the way we see these seemingly harmless growths, which are ignored as irrelevant by both patients and doctors.

Men affected with xanthelasma are at a 12% higher risk of heart attack. Men aged 70-79 are at an even higher risk.

Women with xanthelasma have an 8% higher risk of heart attack, as opposed to those who are not affected.

It has been poved that women have a lower risk of heart disease, and researchers in this study explain that in this particular group of patients, xanthelasma allows accurate prediction of heart disease.

The research concluded that xanthelasma may indicate a heart attack, severe atherosclerosis, heart disease, and death, independent of other factors such as high cholesterol, obesity, smoking, and high blood pressure.

The presence of xanthelasma cases in each age group indicates an increased probability of heart disease, heart attack, and death. Both men and women who have these yellow growths on their eyelids are likely to experience a heart attack, and maybe they will even be life threatened in a 10-year period.
It has been proven that men are more prone to heart disease.

If these yellow growths appear on your eyelids, it is important for you to immediately check your cholesterol levels.

Can Music Help Cure Cancer?

Can Music Help Cure Cancer?

Musicologist Nolan Gasser is working with cancer patients at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital in New York to discover if music can alleviate their pain and anxiety.

Anyone who has ever been proximitous to cancer—whether as a patient or a loved one of a patient—knows how awful it is, how corrosive. Anything that can alleviate even a scintilla of its physical and emotional effects on the sufferer and those close to them should be welcomed.

To that end, Nolan Gasser, chief musicologist (now emeritus) at the music site, Pandora, and architect of the company’s music genome project—which seeks to align the musical “identities” of songs with the music preferences of listeners—is collaborating with Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital in Manhattan to pilot an “algorithm” to provide personalized musical therapy for cancer patients.

The idea is to align the intrinsic musical attributes of a piece and the tastes of a patient. The result would formulate playlists to alleviate patients’ pain and anxiety.

8 Surprising Advantages of Going Bald

8 Surprising Advantages of Going Bald

Hair loss and going bald is one of the scariest worries men have. The strands of hair found on the pillow, the small patches of hair that continue to grow - all these are a real source of anxiety for many men. But the loss of hair and going bald doesn't need to be that bad. It turns out being bald has its own advantages, which can even be a positive process. So instead of focusing on the negatives, educate yourselves about the good points of going bald.

1. You have a lower risk of cancer

A study researching prostate cancer found that men who started losing their hair at a young age had 45% less chance of getting prostate cancer than men with a full head of hair. The study found that long-term exposure to large quantities of testosterone, which is one of the causes for male baldness, can slow down the development of tumors in the body, in direct contrast to the previous belief that testosterone actually encourages the development of cancerous growths.

2. You have a more efficient metabolism

Despite the negative effect on the scalp, high levels of testosterone in the male body have a positive influence - they boost the metabolism process and help the body get in shape, maintain a healthy weight and develop bodily muscles. Studies have also shown that men with a high level of testosterone have a lower concentration of fat in the face, which may contribute to a stronger, more sculpted face.

3. You're seen as more masculine

Another study researching the effects of male baldness asked hundreds of young men and women to voice an opinion on photos of men with full hair and then give their opinion of the same men whose hair was digitally removed from the photos. The men presented were seen as stronger, more assertive and even taller in the photos where they were shown as bald. The study even suggested an explanation of the phenomenon - a bald scalp is seen by many as associated with more "manly" professions, such as soldiers, cops and fire fighters.

4. You save time and money

Shampoo, conditioner, combs, brushes, cremes and the hair dresser - we may not notice, but these expenses add up. Men who have already lost their hair aren't required to spend money on grooming their hair. Another great advantage is the saving of TIME - as you'll never have to spend time messing around with it or making it look better. Most importantly, your showers become so much faster than they used to be - you can be done in a minute or have lots of time to just enjoy the rush of hot water.

5. You look great in any hat

That's right, no hat hair for you. Bald men can make any hat look good. Add a pair of neat looking sunglasses and you look like a million bucks every time you leave the house. Try any hat you want, a baseball cap, a fedora - you can even bring top hats back in style! They all look great on you.

6. You have an advantage in business dealings
Bald men are seen by many as having better leadership potential, as more assertive and as more powerful. These impressions give them an edge in the business world. That said, studies show that men whose hair is falling out and do not shave their heads are actually seen as weak and insecure. That is why experts recommend that men who are losing their hair bite the bullet and completely shave their head. Some experts also mention that some of the strongest and most influential leaders of all time lost their hair, including Winston Churchill, Vladimir Lenin, Mahatma Gandhi and Vladimir Putin.

7. You don't have to face the worst male worry

According to leading psychologists, the fear of going bald is one of the worst fears men have. Thinking about it all the time can be very exhausting and debilitating. Many men consult with skin specialists, pay fortunes every month for all sorts of medicine and even count the number of hairs falling out daily. If you've already said goodbye to your hair, you've probably already realized it's not that bad, and you are no longer accompanied by this daily fear

8. You keep looking the same age

Men who are bald may look older - at first. But as time goes by, they have no hair to turn grey or hair to lose, so other than a few wrinkles, they keep looking the same age as they always have. Take Patrick Stewart or Bruce Willis, for example, both bald men who have looked the same age for decades!

However, If you're not quite ready to give up your head of hair, find out the natural ways to prevent baldness.

Complications during Pregnancy

Complications during Pregnancy
Dr. Sujoy Dasgupta

DNB (Obst and Gynae), MS (Obst and Gynae- Gold Medalist), MBBS (Gold Medalist, Hons) · Gynaecologist

Most of us have an idea that the couple should go to gynecologist only after they fall pregnant or when there is difficulty in conceiving. But we all know that prevention is better than cure. Then why should not we take precaution to avoid complications in pregnancy so that we can have healthy mother and healthy baby.

Some of the diseases can manifest during pregnancy, like some diseases of heart, blood pressure, blood sugar etc. But if the couple comes to doctor when they are planning pregnancy, then we can diagnose it and start treatment so that pregnancy can be safe to both the mother and the baby.

On the other hand, some pre-existing disease may turn serious during pregnancy and endanger life of both mother and baby. This includes thyroid disease, hypertension, epilepsy, renal disease, cardiac disease etc. If taken care of properly, the disease can be controlled before pregnancy so that the risk can be reduced. Again all the drugs are not safe for the baby. So, if treated before pregnancy, the mother can be put on safer but effective drugs before pregnancy.

Some diseases may run in family and often goes undetected and can affect the baby. Thlassaemia, hemophilia etc are the best examples. So, if the couple comes to us before pregnancy, we can screen them to diagnose whether they are bearer of the disease or not and then we can take care to prevent birth of defective baby.

Some diseases indicate that there may be problems in having pregnancy, like problems in periods or abdominal pain in female, sexual problems in male and female etc. If treated properly, it will avoid unnecessary time wastage for trying for pregnancy.

The woman can be instructed how to remain healthy to have normal baby, before pregnancy. She can be advised some drugs (like folic acid), can be asked to avoid harmful drugs and substances (like drugs, excessive vitamin a, excessive vitamin d, excessive caffeine, smoking etc). Even the husband can be asked how to improve his fertility (by avoiding heat exposure to his scrotum).

Again some infections can be dangerous for the baby. So, before pregnancy we can treat the women for the infections and in some cases we can vaccinate her to prevent infection.

"a stitch in time saves nine. So, why don't you consult your gynecologist when you are planning for pregnancy? have smooth journey throughout pregnancy and enjoy parenthood.
