Could prolonged using your phone at night cause blindness?

Could prolonged using your phone at night cause blindness?

Using our phones at night is a very common activity that most of us participate in. Most people check social media and send text messages before going to bed. According to
The Business Insider, numerous people think using our smartphones at night is a harmless activity, but it can actually have damaging effect on our health. A report from GigaOm says that the light radiating out from our smartphones can ultimately harm our sleep cycle and overall health. According toBusiness Insider, that blue light (light from our smartphones) affects the way our body produces the chemical melatonin, which is the hormone produced by secreted by the pineal gland to help make us sleepy. The American Chemical Society further displayed the long-lasting impacts of the blue light of smartphones. They declared that the blue light essentially “tricks your body into thinking its morning, which messes with your circadian rhythm and makes it harder to fall asleep.”

An excessive amount of using your smartphone at night for several hours can possibly lead to a disorder called macular degeneration. Macular degeneration is when the center section of the retina deteriorates. The retina is the nerve tissue located in the back of the eye that detects light, so when this is severely damaged, it can lead to blindness (in severe cases).

Treat Diabetic Foot Ulcers

Treat Diabetic Foot Ulcers

Aug 2, 2012

Experts estimate that somewhere in the world a person with diabetes will lose a lower extremity every half minute due to a wound. One of the complications that can occur in diabetes is the development of foot ulcers. These wounds occur for a variety of reasons including poor blood supply due to damaged blood vessels, neuropathy, which is damage to the nerves which makes it difficult for diabetics to feel their extremities, and finally because diabetics tend to heal less quickly than non-diabetics. Indeed, diabetics are estimated to have a 10-fold higher risk of requiring an amputation than non-diabetics.

feet_0.article.jpg

No Injury Is Considered Minor In Diabetic Feet

In diabetes even seemingly minor injuries should be treated as serious injuries. This includes even calluses which are often precursors to diabetic foot ulcers. One of the biggest components of treating diabetic foot ulcers is to engage in proactive, preventative diabetic footcare. This includes keeping the feet dry and clean, preventing them from cracking by applying moisturizer regularly, taking care when trimming nails, wearing well-fitting shoes, avoiding going barefoot, visually inspecting the feet daily, using caution at nail salons, and curing any hint of athlete's foot before it can cause cracks or sores on the feet. If any cuts, scrapes, or cracks are detected, the area should be immediately cleaned, triple antibiotic cream should be applied, the wound should be covered with gauze bandages, and the wound should be inspected by a healthcare professional or wound care center within 7 days.

Proper Footwear Is Essential

In addition, some people may need to regularly wear diabetic shoes which are sturdy, breathable, and protect the foot from damage. These measures are extremely important because diabetic ulcers are often painless due to neuropathy so extremely serious tissue damage may occur with no accompanying pain. In general, however, diabetics should avoid tight, pointy shoes, shoes made of materials that don't breathe like plastic, and they should avoid flimsy shoes such as flip flops. Diabetics, especially those with known vascular problems in the foot or neuropathy, should avoid going barefoot, even at home.

Treatment Of Diabetic Foot Ulcers

Debridement

However, if a diabetic foot ulcer does occur there are many things that may need to be done to treat it. First, a doctor may need to debride the wound. This means that dead tissue in the wound is removed. This can be done in a variety of ways including using a scalpel, special scissors, flushing the wound, using a whirlpool, applying enzymes, or applying wet dressings. Many times wet dressings are applied to the wound, allowed to dry, and are then removed. As they are pulled off the wound, dead tissue comes with them.

Antimicrobials

Second, antibiotics or antifungals may be necessary to treat the infection. These will be prescribed initially based on the severity of the wound and may be taken orally, or they may need to be given intravenously. If the wound is particularly serious, cultures may be taken from the wound to identify the pathogen so that antibiotic therapy can be specific and targeted.

Remove Pressure

Third, all pressure on the wounded area must be avoided. This may mean that a person is confined to a wheelchair, or they may need to wear a cast, or use crutches, or wear a special diabetic boot which cushions the foot.

Control Blood Sugar

Finally, keeping blood sugar levels under tight control will aid in healing. When dealing with a complication such as a diabetic foot ulcer, proper diabetes management is essential.

At Home Wound Care

Once home, further wound care may be necessary. Typically this will consist of regular dressing changes. Your doctor will explain to you what you should do in your specific case. But once the wound is fully healed, it will be important to continue to engage in proper diabetic foot care hygiene to prevent a recurrence.
If these steps are followed, treatment of a diabetic foot ulcer can be successful and may prevent the need for an amputation.

Will 10,000 Steps a Day Make You Fit?

Will 10,000 Steps a Day Make You Fit?

July 03, 2015

Wearable devices that monitor physical well-being and fitness are incredibly popular. The number sold is expected to increase from 17.7 million in 2014 to more than 40 million this year.

Personally, I use the Jawbone UP24 and have found it very useful for keeping track of my daily steps and sleep patterns. Most of these devices come set with a default goal of 10,000 steps a day, which is a number commonly associated with a basic or moderate level of fitness.

For instance, Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare recommends walking 8,000 to 10,000 steps daily, while the UK National Obesity Forum recommends 7,000 to 10,000 daily steps to stay moderately active.

Recent research showed that wearing a fitness-tracking wristband (the FitBit One) did help overweight postmenopausal women increase their activity levels by nearly 40 minutes (and 789 steps) a week. Wearing a pedometer did not have such an effect.

However, if you’re committed to making your 10,000 steps a day, does that mean you’re on your way to becoming physically fit?

Walking 10,000 Daily Steps Is a Required Movement

walking-10000-steps.jpg

Should you strive for 10,000 daily steps? Yes! I view this as a basic requirement for optimal health, like drinking adequate amounts of water each day. Your body is designed for frequent movement and many researchers are now starting to reemphasize the importance of walking.
According to Katy Bowman, a scientist and author of the book: Move Your DNA: Restore Your Health Through Natural Movement:

“Walking is a superfood. It’s the defining movement of a human.”

For example, one study found that walking for two miles a day or more can cut your chances of hospitalization from a severe episode of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) by about half

Another study found that daily walking reduced the risk of stroke in men over the age of 60.

Walking for at least an hour or two could cut a man’s stroke risk by as much as one-third, and it didn’t matter how brisk the pace was. Taking a three-hour long walk each day slashed the risk by two-thirds.

The elderly and those struggling with chronic disease that prevents them from engaging in more strenuous fitness regimens would also do well to consider moving around more. While walking is often underestimated, studies show you can reap significant health benefits from it.

However, as far as fitness goes, walking will only help you to get physically fit if you’re starting out very out of shape. Even then, as you get fitter, you will need to add exercise to your lifestyle, such as high-intensity interval training and strength training, to actually get fit.

Walking Is Not a Form of Exercise…

I don't view walking as an exercise at all but rather as an essential movement that we all require. The older you get the more important it becomes. You can be very athletically fit, but if you are sitting all day with minimal walking or movement, your health will most definitely suffer.

I personally walk about two hours a day or about 55 miles per week. I do this barefoot without a shirt on at the beach and so am able to get my sun exposureand read two or three books a week. Multi-tasking like this allows me to easily justify the time investment. Most don't realize that walking burns the same amount of calories as running, it just takes longer.

However, I also do some form of "exercise" every day. This includes strength training twice a week, HIIT twice a week with weights or on an elliptical machine, and a light 10-minute workout three times a week on recovery days.

But since walking isn't exactly exercise, you can do it everyday without needing any recovery days for your body to repair and regenerate; it doesn't tear down your body much, so it doesn’t require recovery time.

The downside is that walking won't build your body up much either, unless, as mentioned, you are very unfit. For those who are fit, walking is a phenomenal maintenance activity that will allow you to be healthy into old age. Just be sure you have someone knowledgeable seriously analyze your posture.

I see many people walking on the beach and most of the elderly have terrible posture. They have lost much of their thoracic extension and are bent forward shuffling along. An excellent book that can help in this area is Natural Posture for Pain-Free Living by Kathleen Porter.

Many People Don’t Get Close to 10,000 Steps a Day

Taking 10,000 daily steps means you’ve walked about five miles or 9 kilometers. Many people do not get close to reaching this goal, which is why fitness trackers can be so useful. According to the UK’s National Health Service (NHS), the average person only walks between 3,000 and 4,000 steps per day.

I recommend using a pedometer, or better yet, one of the newer wearable fitness trackers, to find out how far you normally walk. At first, you may be surprised to realize just how little you move each day. Tracking your steps can also show you how simple and seemingly minor changes to the way you move around at work can add up.

You can break up your daily steps into any size increments that work for you. You might walk for one hour in the early morning, 30 minutes during your lunch hour and another hour in the evening. Or you might enjoy taking shorter 20-minute walks throughout your day.

Research even shows getting up and walking around for two minutes out of every hour can increase your lifespan by 33 percent, compared to those who do not.

Dr. James Levine, co-director of the Mayo Clinic and the Arizona State University Obesity Initiative, and author of the book Get Up! Why Your Chair Is Killing You and What You Can Do About It, actually recommends that you be up and moving for at least 10 minutes out of every hour.

Regular Daily Walking Helps to Counteract the Effects of Too Much Sitting

Part of what makes a goal of 10,000 steps a day so important is that it gets you up and out of your chair. Sitting for too long has been found to increase your risk of death from virtually all health problems, from type 2 diabetes and heart disease to cancer and all-cause mortality.
For example, sitting for more than eight hours a day is associated with a 90 percent increased risk of type 2 diabetes.8 The average American actually spends nine to 10 hours of their day sitting, and certain occupations, such as telecommunications employees, spend an average of 12 hours sitting each day.

For many years, exercise was promoted as the solution to this largely sedentary lifestyle. But while exercise, especially short bursts of high-intensity activity, is crucial to optimal health, research suggests it can’t counteract the effects of too much sitting.

In fact, chronic sitting has a mortality rate similar to smoking.

The simplest way to avoid these negative health effects is to strive to sit less – ideally for less than three hours a day. A standing desk can help with this, as can frequent walking.

Dr. Levine’s investigations show that when you’ve been sitting for a long period of time and then get up, a number of molecular cascades occur. For example, within 90 seconds of standing up, the muscular and cellular systems that process blood sugar, triglycerides, and cholesterol—which are mediated by insulin—are activated.

All of these molecular effects are activated simply by carrying your own bodyweight. These cellular mechanisms are also responsible for pushing fuel into your cells and, if done regularly, will radically decrease your risk of diabetes and obesity. In short, at the molecular level, your body was designed to be active and on the move all day long.

Walking Is Good Medicine

Walking may not boost your cardiovascular fitness or muscle strength significantly the way more intense exercise does, but it does offer other significant benefits. Taking a walk during your lunch hour can have a significant impact on your mood and help reduce work-related stresses, for instance.

Walking was also found to improve quality of life for depressed middle-aged women. Those who averaged at least 2.5 hours of moderate-intensity exercise or just over 3.25 hours of walking each week reported feeling more energized and more social at their three-year follow up. They also reported feeling less pain.

For many people, fitting in 10,000 steps a day takes a concerted effort to move around more. You might try, for instance:

  • Taking walks while making phone calls (use a wired headset or your phone’s speaker function)
  • Walking a few laps around your office building before entering, and after leaving, the building
  • Using an evening walk as family time to catch up on your kids’ and spouse’s day
  • Having a walking buddy, such as a neighbor or even your dog, to keep you motivated

How to Kick Your Walking Up a Notch

High-intensity interval training (HIIT) has been shown to be one of the best forms of exercise in terms of both effectiveness and efficiency. It involves brief periods of intense activity followed by periods of rest. Ordinary walking does not qualify as a high-intensity workout, but it can be tweaked into one. For the last decade, Dr. Hiroshi Nose and colleagues at the Shinshu University Graduate School of Medicine in Matsumoto, Japan, have developed walking programs for the elderly.

In light of the benefits associated with HIIT, Dr. Nose created a regimen of fast walking and gentle strolling, to see if this kind of program might provide greater fitness benefits than walking at a steady pace. The program consisted of repeated intervals of three minutes of fast walking, aiming for an exertion level of about six or seven on a scale of one to 10, followed by three minutes of slow strolling. The results turned out to be very promising. As reported by the New York Times:

“In their original experiment, the results of which were published in 2007, walkers between the ages of 44 and 78 completed five sets of intervals, for a total of 30 minutes of walking at least three times a week. A separate group of older volunteers walked at a continuous, moderate pace, equivalent to about a 4 on the same exertion scale. After five months, the fitness and health of the older, moderate group had barely improved. The interval walkers, however, significantly improved aerobic fitness, leg strength and blood-pressure readings.”

In December 2014, the team published a follow-up report on the participants, noting that 70 percent were still adhering to the walking program two years after the study ended, and the health benefits remained stable.

Walking Barefoot Adds Another Element for Good Health

If you can walk in a natural area, such as grass or on the beach, kick off your shoes while doing so.

Walking barefoot on the sand or grass has additional benefits that go beyond that of walking, as this allows your body to absorb free electrons from the Earth through the soles of your feet, a practice known as grounding. These electrons have powerful antioxidant effects that can protect your body from inflammation and its many well-documented health consequences. For example, one scientific review published in the Journal of Environmental and Public Health concluded that grounding (walking barefoot on the earth) could improve a number of health conditions, including the following

To recap, strive to get up and get moving often throughout your day; 10,000 steps is a good number to aim for and should be done in addition to your exercise program. While I do recommend fitness trackers, don’t let a lack of one keep you from moving. A pedometer can be equally effective for a fraction of the cost. For instance, researchers found that simply wearing apedometer daily for 12 weeks led to a significant decrease in sitting time, and a significant increase in physical activity among the participants, who lost an average of 2.5 pounds each.

And, as mentioned, pay attention to proper posture while you walk. Kathleen Porter’s Natural Posture for Pain-Free Living is an excellent starting point if you feel your posture could use some improvement.

What You Need to Know About Glaucoma

What You Need to Know About Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a medical condition of the eye where the optic nerve becomes damaged, and worsens over time. The buildup of pressure inside the eye, known as intraocular pressure, is the eye's inability to drain out the aqueous humor fluid properly. The optic nerve damage can lead to loss of vision and permanent blindness within a couple of years if left untreated.

The two main types of the disease are open-angle glaucoma and angle-closure glaucoma. Open-angle glaucoma is the most common of the pair. In the open-angle, the eye structures appear normal, but the fluid doesn't flow properly through the drain of the eyes, known as the trabecular meshwork.

The latter of the diseases, angle-closure glaucoma, is categorized by poor drainage of the eye, due to the angle between the iris and the cornea, which then becomes obstructed by the iris and results in blurred vision.

There are numerous ways in which the eye disease may be treated. The treatments are prescription eye drops for less severe problems, microsurgery to thoroughly drain out the fluid of the eye, or through various laser surgery procedures.

Editor's note - Please consult your physician if you are suffering from any of the symptoms listed below, or if you have a history of glaucoma in your family. It's important to have a complete eye exam to minimize the risks at an early stage.

External Causes:

  • Blockage of blood vessels in the eye
  • Blunt injury to the eye
  • Chemical damages to the eye
  • Severe eye infection
  • Inflammatory conditions of the eye (Uveitis)

Symptoms

  • Seeing halos around lights
  • Vision loss
  • Redness in the eye
  • Sudden hazy or blurred vision
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Pain in the eye
  • Narrowing of vision (tunnel vision)
  • Flashes of light or black spots
  • Double vision
  • Seeing spots, ghost-like images

People at Most Risk:

  • Are over the age of 40
  • Have a family history of glaucoma
  • People of African-American ancestry
  • Have poor vision
  • Have thin corneas
  • Have diabetes
  • Have had trauma to the eye or eyes
  • Take certain steroid medications, such as prednisone

7 Preventative Measures Against Glaucoma:

1) Healthy Diet - Maintaining a healthy diet is essential for preventing diseases of all sorts. Green leafy vegetables are high in chlorophyll, which is a vital component that improves vision and protects against glaucoma. Make sure you add spinach, kale, beetroot, and carrots, to your salad and dietary intake. The omega-3 fatty acids of cold water fish are also beneficial for healthy eyesight.

2) Eye Exercises - You can practice from a wide assortment of eye exercises to maintain optimal vision. Eye exercises prevent strain and sharpen concentration. Here are a few exercises you can perform at home:

  • The Pencil Exercise - Hold a pencil at an arm’s length and focus on it and slowly bring it closer to your nose. Move the pencil farther from your eyes until you can no longer keep it in focus. Perform this exercise about ten times a day.
  • The Eye Rolling Exercise - Roll your eyes in a clockwise direction for a few seconds, and then counter-clockwise for a few seconds. Repeat the process four or five times, and blink your eyes in between each set.
  • The Eye Blinking Exercise - Try blinking your eyes in quick spurts, 20 to 30 times without squeezing your eyes shut, which is known as eyelid fluttering. Close your eyes and let them rest for a while after you are done.
  • The Concentration Exercise - Focus your vision on a distant object for a short period. Try staring at the moon outside for a few minutes to avoid straining of the eyes.
3) Sunning and Palming - The Bates Method of sunning and palming, helps flex and reactivate the lens of the eye. Here's how to perform each technique:

  • The Sunning Process - Let the sun shine directly onto your closed eyelids, while breathing in deeply. You can sun in the morning for a couple of minutes.
  • The Palming Process - Rub your palms together to generate heat and then gently cup them over your closed eyes without applying any pressure. Keep your eyes covered so that no trace of light can enter.

4) Wild Asparagus - You might not have liked asparagus when you were young, but you will certainly appreciate the benefits this spring vegetable has for maintaining healthy vision. Eating a few sticks of asparagus can help prevent such eye disorders as glaucoma and cataracts. Here is an interesting recipe you can prepare:

  • Mix 1 teaspoon of wild asparagus with 1/2 teaspoon of honey.
  • Consume twice daily with a glass of warm milk for a few months.
5) Ginkgo Biloba - The Chinese have relied on the Ginkgo Biloba for over 5,000 years to treat a variety of medical conditions. Ginkgo Biloba affects ocular blood flow and protects the optic nerve from damages. It is also used to improve memory, relieve stress and even help treat Alzheimer's disease. Take 120-mg standardized capsules once a day, or in two to three divided doses. Make sure you consult your doctor before taking any Ginko Biloba capsules.

6) Bilberry - This powerful bilberry herb is ideal for treating night blindness and protecting against macular degeneration of the eye. It contains a chemical called anthocyanoside, which supplies the bloodstream with anti-inflammatory properties. Eat a 1/2 cup of them per day, or in supplement form as an alternative. Take 160 mg of bilberry extract (with 25 percent anthocyanidin) twice daily, or several times per week. Consult your doctor beforehand if you are planning to take the herb in capsule form.

7) Almonds - Almonds are a great snack alternative to sugary candy bars and potato chips, high in sodium. They help improve vision with the powerful omega-3 fatty acid components, and provide you with a much-needed boost of energy during the day. A handful of almonds can increase brain function and even save you from fatigue. Try this quick and easy almond paste recipe:

  • Take about 5 to 10 almonds and let them soak in water overnight.
  • Peel the skin off and grind them the following morning.
  • The mixture will turn into an almond paste, which you can consume with a glass of warm milk for breakfast.
  • Repeat process for a few months.
Extra Bonus Tips:

  • Visit your eye doctor for regular checkups.
  • Don't spend too much time watching T.V. or sitting directly in front of a computer screen, since they both contribute to straining of the eyes.
  • Keep a safe distance about 18 to 24 inches away from the screen while you are working.
  • Purchase an anti-glare screen to avoid glare on your computer.

  • Wear a pair of UV sunglasses when you're outside to protect your eyes from the beaming sunlight.

Benefits of Sleeping on Your Left Side

Benefits of Sleeping on Your Left Side

Aug 24, 2015

Everyone knows that sleep is very important for maintaining a good physical and mental health. However, the duration of your sleep is just as important as the way in which you sleep. Your sleep position can influence your health, help in keeping your skin look young, and improve your digestive health.

Furthermore, sleeping on the left side of your body can even save your life. If you are currently sleeping in another position, keep reading to find out why you should start sleeping on your left side right now.

It Matters Which Side You Sleep

There are several sleeping positions – your front, your back, your left side, and your right side – and they all affect your health. Sleeping on the back can be particularly dangerous for people with sleep apnea or asthma, because it can cause breathing difficulties.

Sleeping on the right side is likely to worsen digestion problems, whereas sleeping on the left side may improve digestive symptoms.

This Is Why You Should Be Sleeping On Your Left Side

Sleeping on the left side is believed to greatly improve the health and even save lives. In holistic medicine, the left side of the body is the dominant lymphatic side, and while you’re sleeping on this side, your body will have more time to filter toxins, lymph fluid, and waste through the thoracic duct and the lymph nodes.

On the other hand, sleeping on your right side may cause your lymphatic system to run more slowly. You don’t want this to happen, because a lymphatic system that doesn’t run at full efficiency can become incapable of filtering toxins or properly moving lymph fluid throughout the body. This increases your risk of deadly diseases due to the build-up of toxins.

When you start sleeping on your left side, you might notice your body becoming more efficient at toxin disposal through waste. This happens because this position improves the digestive system, and allows your body to promptly extract nutrients and dispose toxins.

Learn to Sleep in this Position

If you normally sleep on your back, your front, or your right side, you might wonder how to break that habit and start sleeping on your left side. This will take some time and practice, but it is possible to quickly train your body to sleep in this position. Here are some tips:

You can try lying on your left side and press a full-length body pillow up against your back. The pillow will prevent you from rolling over during the night.

Try switching the side of the bed you sleep on. This will make it easier for you to flip to your other side and enjoy the same sleeping experience.

Another trick is to keep a dim light lit on your right side. Since your body will naturally want to turn away from the light during sleep, it will make it easier for you to sleep on your left side.

Try these small changes as soon as you can – they will improve your sleep routine and lead you to a better health.

How To Fall Sleep Fast With The “4-7-8 Method”

How To Fall Sleep Fast With The “4-7-8 Method”

July 12, 2015

Dr. Weil is an influential public supporter of a previously little-known breathing technique known as the “4-7-8 exercise.”

This trick, which began to capture national attention several years ago and has since been the subject of innumerable headlines, including one on Oprah.com, is shockingly simple, takes hardly any time, and can be done pretty much anywhere.

Here is how you do the exercise:

  1. Place the tip of your tongue against the tissue ridge right above your upper front teeth. Keep it there for the remainder of the exercise.
  2. Exhale completely through your mouth, making a whoosh sound as you do so.
  3. Close your mouth and inhale slowly through your nose while mentally counting to four.
  4. Hold your breath for a mental count of seven.
  5. Exhale completely through your mouth for a mental count of eight. Make the same whoosh sound from Step Two.
  6. This concludes the first cycle. Repeat the same process three more times for a total of four renditions.

In a nutshell: breathe in for four, hold for seven, and breathe out for eight. You must inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth.

The four-count inhale allows chronic under-breathers to take in more oxygen. The seven-count hold gives the oxygen more time to thoroughly permeate the bloodstream, and the eight-count exhale slows the heart rate and releases a greater amount of carbon dioxide from the lungs

Dates – The Healthiest Fruit On This Planet

Dates – The Healthiest Fruit On This Planet

August 5, 2015

Dates are an excellent source of fiber, necessary for normal function of the digestive tract (the intestine).
The natural sugar found in dates is an excellent substitute for the ordinary sugar. This fruit is easily digestible and reduces the feeling of hunger. Taken in consider the nutrients dates contain, these fruits are a sort of a multivitamin pill, good for both children and adults. Dates are efficient in treating numerous diseases, including anemia, lowering cholesterol, treating cancer and many other.

Excellent Source of Iron

People diagnosed with anemia should eat dates as much as possible, because these fruits are an excellent source of iron. 100 g of dates contain about 0.90 g iron, which is about 11% of the recommended daily intake. Iron, as part of the hemoglobin inside the red blood cells, determines the oxygen that goes in the blood. Teenagers and pregnant women are those who need more iron.

Eye Vitamins

If we already know that dates contain lutein and zeaxantine, these fruits are often called “eye vitamins”. Lutein and zeaxantine are especially important for the eye retina and macula, because they improve the eyesight and prevent any possible damage of the macula, which can be damaged as people get older. If you want to have better eyesight eats more dates.

Stops Diarrhea

Dates contain calcium, a mineral that has proven to be efficient in stopping diarrhea. In addition to this, dates are amazingly helpful in the renewal process of the gut flora. Regular consumption of dates help the creation of good bacteria in the intestine.

Cure For Constipation

Same as dates stop diarrhea, this fruit also helps the organism digest food faster and eliminate the toxins. All you should do is take a few dates in the evening and leave them in a glass of water overnight. During the night, dates will release their juice which is an excellent laxative, and it will facilitate the work of the intestines. In the US dates are packed in small bottles and used as a medicine. 100 g of dates contain 8.5 g fiber.

Dates Facilitate Delivery

An experiment conducted in the Jordan University for Science and Technology showed that consuming dates 4 weeks before the delivery can alleviate pain and reduce the bleeding. Women who consumed dates delivered easier, compared to the women that did not eat this fruit. Moreover, dates help women go through the postpartum depression more easily and produce enough milk for the baby.

Regulate Weight

Thanks to the many nutrients dates contain, this fruit gives a feeling of satiety and really facilitates the weight loss process. If you eat a date on an empty stomach, it will regulate the work of the intestines and regulate the necessary blood sugar level. Dates do not contain cholesterol, but they contain a lot of sugar, so excessive consumption would result in gaining weight (1 kg of dates contains 3 000 calories).

Dates Strengthen Heart

People with weak heart can consume this powerful fruit every day. Leave some dates in a glass of water overnight. In the morning blend the dates and the water together. You can take this remedy several times during the day.

Reduce High Blood Pressure- hypertension

Dates contain small amounts of sodium, but they are rich in calcium. A regular portion of 5-6 dates contain near 80 mg magnesium, an essential mineral that contributes to the spreading of blood vessels. A research showed that 370 mg magnesium daily can reduce blood pressure.

Protects Against Stroke

One of the key benefits this amazing fruit provides is its ability to regulate the healthy nervous system, thanks to the high potassium levels. Studies have shown that the large potassium intake (about 400 mg) can reduce the risk of stroke for up to 40 percent.

Brain Food

Dates contain phosphorus, which is great for the brain, so these fruits are recommended for people with intellectual job.

Energy Stimulator

Dates contain natural sugar, including glucose, sucrose and fructose. Combining dates and milk will help you get the maximum amount of sugar this fruit contain.

Increase Sexual Strength

Soak a few dates in some goat milk and leave them overnight. In the morning, mix the fruit with some milk, add honey and cardamom (spice) and drink it. This combination can be consumed by both men and women because it strengthens the body and increases the energy level.

Psoriasis: How to take care at home

Psoriasis: How to take care at home

Psoriasis is a skin condition characterised by

thick, red and scaly skin. Though not contagious, it takes a heavy
toll on the individual with irritation, itching and above all
social embarassment.

Causes

A flare up can be triggered by stress, skin injury, sun burn, viral
rashes, increased friction, medicines, abrasion, weather, vitamin
deficiency and more.

Indian scientists discover Alzheimer's dark secrets

Indian scientists discover Alzheimer's dark secrets

Aug 26, 2015

MUMBAI: In a major breakthrough, Indian scientists have managed to get a glimpse of the protein fragments known as amyloid beta, which hallmark Alzheimer's disease.

"Everybody wants to make the key to solve Alzheimer's Disease, but we don't know what the lock looks like. We now have a glimpse of something which could be the lock. May be it is still not the real thing, but as of now, this is our best bet," said research co-director Sudipta Maiti from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) here.

The possible lock looks like a bunch of amyloid beta molecules in the shape of a hairpin, but with a twist, the researchers found.

Knowing the shape and form of the toxic molecule could lead to better ways of defeating it and evolving an effective therapy for Alzheimer's disease that robs the old of their memory.

"This has been suspected earlier, but what we found was an unexpected twist in the structure, now becoming a beta-hairpin -- very different from the typical hairpin structure people imagined," said Debanjan Bhowmik from TIFR, the lead contributor of the study.

"This may allow these bunch of amyloid beta molecules to form toxic pores in the cell membranes," Bhowmik explained.

The joint team of researchers from TIFR, Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru and the University of Toronto in Canada, cracked the problem that has eluded scientists for years, by using a modified version of Raman Spectroscopy.

A critical modification in the original Raman Spectroscopy technique allowed the measurement of tiny signals that would otherwise have gone unnoticed.

They encased silver nanoparticles in a fat layer ("membrane") that mimicked the outer membranes of living cells.

"While the amyloid beta got fooled by it and stuck to the membrane, the silver inside enhanced the signal to a measurable level and acted as a light beacon to reveal the peptide signature," study co-author Gilbert Walker from University of Toronto pointed out.

The findings were published in the journal ACS Nano.

Starve A Cancer To Death By Removing This One Thing From Your Diet

Starve A Cancer To Death By Removing This One Thing From Your Diet

AUG 17, 2015

Cancer rates are on the rise, and there are many factors that cause cancer that range from our environment to our emotions. But, food is everything, what you eat is what radiates out, but there is a way to cut something out of your diet and make your body thrive.
Cancer’s Fuel – Sugar

Dr. Otto Wartburg along with other health experts have been talking about how cancer loves sugar since the 1920s. Surprisingly many doctors don’t tell their cancer patients that as long as they continue to eat processed foods full of the stuff, they will likely have a more difficult time fighting this disease.

The German physiologist, leading biochemist, medical doctor, and Nobel laureate was convinced that you could starve cancer right out of the body. While it may not always be that easy, this is something that could significantly change the game.

His theory was that malignant cells and tumor growth was caused by cells that generated energy via adenosine triphosphate (ATP) through a nonoxidative breakdown of glucose (sugar). The recycling of the metabolite from this process called glycolysis and the circulation of adhA back into the body caused anaerobic respiration. This is the reverse of what happens with healthy cells.

Healthy, non-cancerous cells generate energy for the body to use through the oxidative breakdown of pyruvate, the end product of glycolysis, which leads to oxidized mitochondria. He therefore concluded that cancer was really a mitochondrial dysfunction. The normal process of respiration of oxygen in the body is changed to the fermentation of sugar. If you remove the sugar, the body should not develop cancer.

How to Detect Diabetes Symptoms

How to Detect Diabetes Symptoms

Jun 27, 2012

here are no standard symptoms for diabetes, which is one of the reasons why it can be difficult to identify. Once your doctor is considering a potential diagnosis of diabetes, there is a test that can be run to determine if that is an accurate diagnosis. However, the test is not commonly administered unless there is suspicion of diabetes.

foot_2.article.jpg

The earlier diabetes is identified and treated, the less likely the patient is to develop complications. Therefore, it is helpful to know how to detect diabetes symptoms.
[h=3]Symptoms of Diabetes – Type I[/h]Type 1 diabetes is the type that a person is born with. Their insulin system never works right, meaning that their body does not respond to hunger or thirst correctly, either through over-stimulating or under-stimulating. Common symptoms of type 1 diabetes are:

  • Unusual or extreme hunger or weight loss
  • Unusual or extreme thirst or urination
  • Unusual or extreme fatigue
  • Unusual or extreme irritability
[h=3]Symptoms of Diabetes – Type II[/h]Type 2 diabetes is the type that develops over time. Originally termed "adult-onset diabetes," that term is no longer in wide usage since so many teenagers and even children are now developing it. While there are often no symptoms of type 2 diabetes, the following symptoms should prompt medical follow up:

  • The symptoms of type 1 diabetes
  • Blurred vision
  • Slow healing of cuts or bruises
  • Frequent or recurring skin, bladder, or gum infections
  • Tingling or numbness in the hands or feet
[h=3]Symptoms of Diabetes Complications[/h]If you already know that you have diabetes, you should be alert for symptoms of diabetic complications. If you experience any of the symptoms of diabetic complications and have not been diagnosed as having diabetes, you should check with your medical professional to determine if you may have diabetes. Here is how to detect symptoms of diabetes complications.
If you have any of the following vision symptoms, it could be a symptom of diabetic retinopathy, which almost all type 1 diabetics and many type 2 diabetics eventually get:

  • Blurred vision
  • Difficulty reading books (near vision) or signs (distance vision)
  • Double vision
  • Pain in one or both eyes
  • Redness in eyes that does not go away
  • Peripheral vision loss
  • Pressure in one or both eyes
  • Seeing spots or floaters
  • Straight lines appear wavy or curved
Neuropathy is when the nerves in your feet no longer work correctly, so that you do not feel sensations of heat, cold, or pain. If you experience any of the following, see your health care provider:

  • Changes to the texture of the skin of your feet
  • Calluses
  • Foot ulcers
  • Red spots, cuts, swelling, or blisters

Health Benefits of Sitting on the Floor While Eating

Health Benefits of Sitting on the Floor While Eating

Aug 27, 2015

Sitting on the floor is an ancient Indian tradition and has its roots in yoga and Ayurveda. Here are some reasons for that practice.

1. Helps in Weight Loss:

When you sit in this position, your brain calms down and is better equipped to focus on the food you eat. Moreover this position helps you feel full faster. One of the main reasons people overeat is because they do not know when they are full.

This happens because the vagus nerve (the main nerve that transmits signals from the stomach to the brain) sends signals to the brain as you eat, telling if you are satiated or not. When you sit on the floor this nerve is able to perform better and transmit signals more efficiently. Since this position makes you eat slower than you would while sitting on a table, it gives your stomach and brain time to cognate the signals of feeling full, thereby preventing overeating and bingeing.

2. More Flexibility:

When you squat or sit in padmasana, the muscles in your lower back, pelvis, around your stomach and those of the upper and lower abdomen stretch, thus reducing pain and discomfort. This, in turn helps your digestive system relax and stay in a normal position. Moreover, the regular stretching of these muscles makes you more flexible and healthy.

3. Improves Posture:

Good posture not only helps prevent injuries but also reduces the chances of excessive strain on certain muscles and joints, which can lead to fatigue and quicker than normal, wear and tear. When you sit on the floor your posture is automatically corrected, making your back straight, lengthening your spine and pushes back your shoulders, beating all the common aches and pains that come with bad posture.

4. Aids Digestion:

When you sit on the floor for eating, you usually sit cross legged, in an asana known as sukhasana or a half padmasna. These yogic poses are well-known in aiding digestion (it is believed that when one sits in this pose while preparing to eat, there is an automatic signal for your brain to prepare for digestion). Apart from that when you eat from a plate placed on the floor, you will have to naturally bend forward slightly and go back to your starting position to swallow. This constant back and forth movement is said to cause the muscles of your abdomen to get activated and leads to increased secretion of stomach acids, making it easier to digest food.

5. Key to Live Longer:

A study published in the Journal European Journal of Preventive Cardiology found that people who sat on the floor in padmasana and were able to get up without any support were more likely to live longer. This is because being able to get up from that position takes a considerable amount of flexibility and lower body strength. The study found that those who were not able to get up without support were at the risk of being 6.5 times more likely to die in the next six years.

6. Keeps Your Knees and Hip Joint Healthy:

By sitting on the floor, we strengthen the lumbar region of the body, reducing back pain and discomfort. The hips open, making our pelvis and legs more flexible. Core muscles are strengthened, and the ankles also get gently stretched. Constant bending of the knees, ankles and hip joint helps keep them flexible and free of diseases. And with flexibility comes better lubrication between the joints making it much easier to sit on the floor.

7. Relaxes the Mind and Calms the Nerves:

Sukhasana and padmasana poses calm the mind and relaxes frazzled nerves. In Ayurveda, eating with a calm mind helps aid in better digestion.

8. Strengthens the Heart by Improving Circulation:

When your feet are below your heart (as in a position when sitting on a chair), the blood circulation is being directed to your feet, as opposed to when you sit cross-legged on the floor where your heart receives the benefit of better circulation.

Ayurvedic Remedies to Quit Smoking

Ayurvedic Remedies to Quit Smoking

Aug 29, 2015

Behaviors such as drinking alcohol, indulging in bad dietary choices, imbibing illegal substances or smoking can, according to ayurvedic practice, be a sign that our minds are far too busy and need to be calmed. Therefore when we do something ‘pleasurable’ such as the aforementioned activities they give a temporary sense of calm and relief from the problems that may haunt us on a daily basis, whether it’s work stress, relationship problems or just all round feelings of anxiety and depression.

Sometimes it becomes clear that what we’re doing to relieve stress can actually end up creating more problems than it solves, particularly in the case of smoking. You can quit using ayurvedic techniques – here’s how.

Using Ayurvedic Medicine and Techniques to Stop Smoking

What happens when you smoke? You have a craving, your brain tells you that you need the nicotine and so you light a cigarette. When you smoke and inhale, the nicotine and other chemicals stimulate the brain to release two substances, dopamine and noradrenaline. As a smoker becomes more dependent on nicotine the need to replicate the release of these two chemicals becomes more and more intense. When you decide to quit smoking by the use of Ayurveda the levels of dopamine and noradrenaline will slowly return to a normal state and cravings will be reduced and it’s all done by diet, exercise and herbal remedies.

How to Approach Quitting Smoking

If you want to quit nicotine for good and classify yourself as a non-smoker, it really can be done. It’s pertinent to point out at this stage that whether you’re approaching this from an Ayurvedic or conventional standpoint, it isn’t easy and requires emotional investment, hard work and dedication. Keeping a positive mental attitude and believing and willing yourself on really is half the battle won. Ayurvedic medicine doesn’t rely solely on one single technique or one single remedy or medicine to relieve a patient of what ails them. Here, we’re looking at a highly individual and holistic approach that looks at the body, mind and spirit of a person and taking the point that was made earlier, of addiction being a problem relating to too much stimulating mental activity. Once this is under control, the symptoms of addiction can be tackled more fully. Practically, there are many things you can do to help yourself too.

Dietary Approach

It makes sense to try and avoid the things that may give way to nicotine cravings – for instance, many people associate having a cup of tea or coffee with the need to light up. The same goes for opening a beer or pouring a glass of wine. The thought enters the brain that along with the drink, you need a fix of nicotine. For the first seven days after you’ve had your last cigarette, try to drink only pure water, herbal tea or juices. This will not only have a cleansing effect on the body, but also the mind too. From your diet, avoid anything very fatty or sugary. When you stop smoking it may be that your body requires satiating with food and in particular foods which might not be the best for our waistlines.

Some people swear by taking a Sattvic approach to diet, that is to say, eating good wholegrains, fresh vegetables and nuts, seeds and legumes which have had as little as possible done to them in the way of cooking so that they are taken on board and used by the body as they were intended. Fresh vegetable juices in particular are rich in prana and are easily assimilated by a body that is trying to detox from substances. Having good, nutritious snacks on hand when a craving hits is also a good idea. Consider raw fresh fruit, vegetable sticks, handfuls of nuts. If you have a naturally ‘sweet tooth’ choosing to suck on a cinnamon stick or dried licorice disk can satiate that craving and help to stop blood sugars from crashing.

Exercise

One of the best physical approaches to quitting smoking is by incorporating Yoga – alongside other physical exercise into your cessation plan. Yoga encourages the mind and body to deal with stress in a positive way, learning new positions is a wonderful way to not only enhance your core strength and your physical capabilities, but also to release the full potential of your mind once it is free from nicotine. One of the most beneficial poses to try is Savasana, otherwise known as the corpse pose. This provides the ultimate in relaxation of mind and focusing of the self.

Alongside the diet and exercise, herbal toning agents may be taken as well to promote relaxation and/or stimulation too. Consider tablets or tinctures of the following alongside your other methods:

Ginseng:

A stimulant which is used to enhance concentration and reduce brain fog and tiredness.

Triphala:

Three sour fruits that contain the most Vitamin C, being a smoker your body is filled with chemical substances which you have trained your body to crave. As part of the detox process, vitamin C will help to extract these toxic substances remove the nicotine cravings.

Ashwagandha:

An adaptogenic anxiety tonic which can help to relieve stress.

Bala:

“This can be used in cases of smoking cessation where someone has gained weight alongside an increase in their stress levels. It can be used to boost physical strength and stimulate the nervous system. It has a slight diuretic action, which is why it aids weight loss.

Shatavari:

This is perhaps more helpful for women who are giving up smoking as it can be used to treat conditions like PMT and the irritability and anger that it can cause. It is a nourishing herb that provides comfort and sustenance and can reassure anyone who is suffering mental rigors. (Note* Shatavari should always be taken with ginger if you tend to gain weight or have a disposition to cysts.)
