Once-atheist Arvind Kejriwal thanks God, calls it miracle
IANS | Dec 28, 2013, 02.18 PM IST

NEW DELHI: Delhi's newly sworn-in chief minister
Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday showed his secular side when he invoked gods of all four major religions - Hinduism, Islam, Christianity and Sikhism - thanking them for the "miracle" that brought him and his party to power.

At least thrice in his inaugural speech at the crowded Ramlila Maidan, he invoked divine blessings, thanking god for the Aam Aadmi Party's maiden electoral victory.

"I thank the Supreme Father, Ishwar, Allah, Waheguru," said Kejriwal, a self-proclaimed atheist till a few years back, soon after being sworn in as Delhi's seventh chief minister.

"This victory is really a miracle, we could not even have thought two years back such a revolution would come that we would be able to uproot the corrupt parties and real democracy would be established," he said to cheers from the crowd.

"This victory is not because of us, it is a miracle, and I thank 'Bhagwan, Ishwar and Allah'," he said.

He again remembered god, seeking divine blessings to fulfill his responsibility.

"The way expectations of people of Delhi have raised, we feel scared at times. I pray to god... the results are not in our hands, but god may give us good sense, and courage so that we don't make any mistake knowingly or unknowingly," he said.

Making another reference, he thanked god for the support the movement got from public.

"When
Anna Hazare was fasting, people from all across the country came on streets. I wondered how it happened, it must have been a miracle of 'Bhagwan, Allah, Ishwar'," he repeated.

Invoking God at appropriate time when addressing an audience composed of poor ,deprived and marginilised sections of society and singing film song from Paigam on social inequality and discrimination AK has learnt very fast to play to his constituency.bit of let down

For everyone thought about God comes only after HE gives success, due course their memory about God fades away. Arvind has no exception!

Noted the correction. :)

technically 'corruption from government' is ok by me.

per 'wren and martin', i would understand it as, kejri would separate corruption from the current government practices, eschew corruption and adopt (good) government.

so, when i read it, i found the statement appropriate enough with the context.

but ofcourse, that good lady raji, is perfectly within her rights to request for correction, as i would understand 'corrupt free', free being here used as adverb? english pundits abound in this forum, please help out! thank you.

'corrupt free' is definitely within modern functioning jargon, i would say, and probably more popular in usage. though that does not make it alone grammatically right. eh! :)

Atheist, theist are just words. It depends on one's belief and disbelief. In his speech Arvind Kejrival accepted that coming to power was a divine miracle and thanked Parameshwar, Ishwar, Allah and Wahe Guru for this. Perhaps the influence of his mentor Anna Hazare has prevailed on him to accept the power of the unknown. We must appreciate this young man for his sincerity of purpose and tireless work in organising a movement against the mighty Congress and corruption.
Lest us hope that this youngster succeeds in his mission and spreads his influence to other parts of the Country as well.

well tbs ji congress can continue with their corruption and AK with his manifesto. both can continue merrily side by side until 2014 elections It may not be tough . Politics makes strange bedfellows. AAP has fired the JAL board chief along with other senior officers. You know TBS ji I once got a bill 2 years ago for over one lakh for 2 months water consumption due to a faulty reading. it took me one year to get it amended as it required boards approval . i made over a dozen trips and finally the director fixed it saying I should have called on him first . his office was 20 km from my place. I tried reasoning with meter reader, inspector ,zonal chief,It dept.with no success before reaching director. This is how Jal board works

I can accept if he found it to be a miracle . gods may not have much to do with it .He was only playing to the gallery including the film song. he might have imagined that he is a Dilip kumar look alike.Anna Hazare reluctantly wished him well. He must be feeling sore that AK took away his crowds. Of course ,Ak is sincere in purpose and let us wish him well.

Arvind. Kejriwal has taken over the reins of Delhi state government with the unstable and unreliable support of congress party. Congress has its own agenda and designs in supporting this man who is/ was hell bent in fighting corruption rampant in the congress rule.If only AK proves that he is capable of providing corruption free government within a short time, the goodwill of people will soar and even if congress withdraws its support,he will return with a thumping majority in the event of repoll.

hi sir,

i had bitter experiences with DESU and modern private electricity company in delhi for my flat in delhi...i paid advance for my

unused electric supply for five years....but they disconnected and no refund......now i dont have electric power/meter in my home

in delhi....if i want again connection...i have to pay extra money under table....i said NO.... so no power in my home last 5 yrs....

its ok...but i wont pay bribe........my back ground is army....so i know how to fight with govt officials in delhi...

Arvind Kejriwal appears to be serious to his commitment to give a clean administration.Let us hope things improve
though not change 100% while he is in power.

personally i think, he does not have to change. it is the circumstances and manipulations, that are too smartly done for him. he probably would not even realize that he has been bribed. he will learn a few months later, that his son is getting a free chauffeur ride to and from work, offered by a 'friend'. and sometime later the 'friend' through K's son, will ask/get a small favour...and then K is hooked.

sorry if this sounds hopeless. i dont know what else to say, when i see the seemingly endless wish for honest administration. this is an oxymoron, the world over. exception maybe singapore, but even there it is rumoured, that lee kan yew's family benefited a lot from govt contracts.

In Singapore the Prime Minister is treated like a CEO not only in designation but also competes with the Corporate head honchos in salaries..The Singapore P.M earns SGD 2.2 Million a year while his council of Ministers earn SGD 1.1 Million..

When we compare, our P.M earns SGD 40000 a year, which is a pittance

Let us pay them well but also make sure that corrupt are taken to task

If AK who is quite vocal against corrution , falls into trap of corruption knowingly or unknowingly as you have described, then god only must save the country.

sorry SS. my mind works strange ways. in any way if this destroys your hope, i am sorry. i wish for india well. my natural pessimism, i hope. does not become true. so sorry again.

Everytime comparisons get made either with private sector salaries or salaries abroad. MPs and MLA S enjoy perks and privileges and sanction allowance increases with mutual agreement and no debates. Govt officers sanctioned 70 percent wage increase during last pay revision in addition to perks like housing and transport to match private sector salaries. Govt has set up one more pay commission to revise their salaries again. Every year there is 20percent DA increase to compensate for price rise. Paying more money is money down the drain. corruption has nothing to do with salaries. Corruption is a byproduct of high expectations and increased avenues for corruption. If the big bribe givers read corporates and receiving politicians are jailed with quick justice ,it will have a good effect

It is always the kith and kin who knowingly or unknowingly compromise the politician. AK may not be an exception. If he delivers on civic amenities water and power ,ensure a citizen charter for timely services from these agencies, improve law and order, common man will be satisfied.he has delivered on water and let us see about the others
There may be some leakages on the corruption front. people do not expect a politician to have a 100percent pure soul

Is it really free water, the latest announcement of Kejriwal

A nice cartoon on the water by Sudhir Tailang

Once-atheist Arvind Kejriwal thanks God, calls it mirac

Mr Arvind Kejrival has implemented free water of 20000 liters as announced but fell for the bureaucratic trap of charging in full for consumption above that mark. That means upto 20000 ltrs free and 20001litrs will be charged full !
This is how the good old Nehruvian Socialism worked. Government is run by these Babus who will never loosen their grip over the Politicians, Arvind Kejrival is not an exception. I was hoping that this young man will bring fresh measures to cleanse the administrative setup. But the first measure is disappointing. Let us hope he would show his mark in other measures promised by AAP.
