dear members,


recently, i attended music concert of nithyasree, in connection

with birth anniversary of papanasam sivan.


Papanasam sivan was called as tamil thiagaraja. He was a

wonderful music director in the 40s and 50s and a vakkiyakara.


Also, a street was named after him.


However, the purpose of my writing this page is that while

attending the function, i noticed he was a recipient of

padma bhushan award. While going thru the recipients of

padma bhushan award, i could not find his name. Probably i

might have missed.


I would like to know from members whether papanasam sivan

was actually awarded padma bhushan and if so, in which year.


Please let me know on this.

dear chandru,

in his wikipedia site, i did not see any reference to sivan getting a padma award. i am not surprised, for sivan never did get the fame or the money associated with it. he lived in penury.

i still remember the article in kumudam or vikatan. music academy had decided to confer sangeetha kala nidhi title on sivan. after the function, on a rainy day, sivan was seen waiting for a bus, while the academy bigwigs whizzed past in their chauffeur driven cars.

this incident was confirmed to me by his grandson ashok ramani, who lives in toronto and gives classical/tamil concerts. if we only had copyright laws like the west, sivan would have made millions, with his compositions. oh well!!

Polagam Ramayya known as Papanasam Sivan (1890-1973) was the receipient of following awards:

"Sahithya Kala Sikamani" by Indian Fine Arts Society in 1950.
"Sivapunya Ganamani" by Kanchi Paramachryaa on Sivan's 60th Birthday.(1950)
"Isai Perarignyar" by Tamil Isai Sangam 1965.
"Sangitha Kalanidhi" by Music Academy 1971
Fellow of Sangeetha Natak Akademy 1962
President's Award in 1962
Padma Bhushan in 1972

As per the list of Padma Bhushan Awardees for 1972 his name "Papanasan Ramayya Sivam - Arts - Tamil Nadu India" is found in the list.

ராகவன் தம்பிஅவர்களுடைய வலைத்தளத்தில் கொடுத்துள்ள விவரங்கள் படி பாபநாசம் சிவன் அவர்கள் பெற்ற பட்டங்கள் கீழ்வருமாறு

1950ல் இந்தியன் ·பைன் ஆர்ட்ஸ் சொசைடி வழங்கிய சங்கீத சாகித்ய கலா சிகாமணி என்ற பட்டமும் சிவனின் 60வது பிறந்த நாளின் போது காஞ்சித் தவமுனிவர் சந்திசேகரேந்திர சுவாமிகள் அருளிய சிவ புண்ய கானமணி என்னும் பட்டமும், தமிழ் இசைச் சங்கம் வழங்கிய இசைப் பேரறிஞர் பட்டமும் வழங்கி சிறப்பித்துள்ளனர். சென்னை மியூசிக் அகாடமி அவருக்கு சங்கீத கலாநிதி என்னும் பட்டத்தை மிகவும் தாமதமாக வழங்கித் தன்னைக் கெளரவித்துக் கொண்டது. மைய அரசு Fellow of Sangeet Natak Akademi அந்தஸ்தினை அவருக்கு வழங்கியது. 1962ல் குடியரசுத்தலைவர் விருது வழங்கப்பட்டது. 1972ல் அவர் இறப்பதற்கு ஒரு வருடம் முன் அவருக்கு பத்ம பூஷன் விருது வழங்கப்பட்டது.

Papanasam Sivan was God's gift to carnatic music...His Bhakthi and devotion is outstanding!

He has acted in a few movies too notable among them being [FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]Kubera Kuchela, Bhaktha Kuchela, Bhaktha Chetha and Thyagabhoomi.

He has also composed songs for films such as [/FONT][FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif][FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]Maramanan, Amba Manam Irangi, Pirava Varam and Vallayil Padum Vayal

He used to participate in Bhajanai Ghoshtis especially in the month of Margazhi
