We are talking about two different situations!
When we try to find out who is the 'real self' in us,
we start discarding everything that can be seen, heard, smelt, felt or tasted saying
"Not this! Not this!"
and finally something which defies all the sense organs, mind, intellect and emotions remains.
[During this process we are very much ALIVE!]
That is the 'true self'. So only that remains after the process of rejection as all the other tangible things vanish.
You are talking about the Atman after the body drops down. Yes! It has to take a new name and a form depending upon its vasansa, ruchi, karma and its thought at the time it gives up its body!
[This is after the death of the physical body!]
Atman is nithya, sudhdha, satvan and sat-chit-ananda swaroopan.

As I have read 'Athma' Enchi (எஞ்சி) Nirkavillai. It (Or He) goes to Swargam,or Naragam as per His Account.He may reborn as somebody/something after going through swarg,narag.
