Medical profession is one of the noblest professions in the world. Doctors are said to be saviours of sick and dying. Doctors have and have been saving many lives. But today, doctors themselves need to be saved from public. Whenever a popular public figure falls sick and gets admitted in the hospital, the doctors there become very nervous, because in spite of the best tratment, if anything untoward happens to the patient, there is a public hue and cry and people start agitating against the hospital and its staff and start attacking the staff there and damaging the instruments, equipment and the building. The best thing in such cases is that these cases must be referred to foreign experts and the patient despatched to a hospital abroad so that these doctors and the hospital properties are safe. In the case of Jayalalithaa's case, fortunately nothing of that sort happened, but it has given scope for plenty of avoidable rumours for many years to come.
Nowadays, situation is getting worse. We find even poor and powerless people indulge in violence and manhandling the hospital staff if the patient brought to the hospital dies claiming that it is due to the negligence of the doctor, even when it is not a fact. Patients are brought and admitted in a critical condition and the condition of the doctors who attend on them becomes critical. Under such conditions, even the best of doctors however much expertise he may have becomes nervous and may make mistakes while treating. Of course, we have to admit that there is deficiency in medical service. Some doctors are end products of big money. Like pseudo secularists in politics, we have some pseudo medical personnel percolating in this field and all such things need correction and weeding out. But for the sake of a few, the majority should not suffer. So it is the duty of the government to provide permanent security to large public and private medical institutions and all and sundry should not be allowed to accompany the patient. Unless we save doctors, they may not be able to save us.
