Baba motioned us all to follow Him in. We asked questions about a variety of subjects; talk of visitors from outer space, about healing, and asking for His help in this if we mentally called on Him; about mediumship, as we wanted to clarify a report I had once read that He did not approve of what mediums did. (But who can approve of what some mediums do?)
So we asked, "Is mediumship, to communicate with those in the spirit, provided the medium is honest and a pure instrument, wrong?"
"No, not at all," Swami replied quite categorically, indeed, as we had expected. We also spoke about the "very bad karma" incurred by man's abuse of the animal kingdom. When I mentioned science in this connection Swami raised His eyes, turned His head away and said, "Ah ... science ... I" with such pain in His voice. "It is essential to spread knowledge of the Oneness of all life. God is in every creature."
Because it is written that the triple Incarnations of this Avatar, "the Kalki Avatar on the white horse" of ancient scriptures as Shirdi Sai Baba, Sathya Sai Baba and Prema Sai represents the Shiva, Shiva-Shakti, and Shakti aspects of Divinity, we wondered if the next descent as Prema Sai, to come immediately after the present form is vacated at the age of 96, would be female.
Baba replied; "No, male. In Mysore—Karnataka."
There was one question I particularly wanted to ask Swami. Regular readers of `two worlds' may remember that in April 1979 I wrote an article titled "Did Jesus die on the cross?" I said: "Swami, there's something I've wanted to know for a long time. Did the physical body of Jesus recover in the tomb? I mean, it wasn't a materialised body of spirit—like Yogananda's Master showed himself to him after he'd been buried?"
Swami said: "No—the physical body. No spirit materialised body. The physical."
I wished I had asked Swami more questions. Yet when one really thinks about it, many questions which leap to mind regarding past events are of academic interest compared to the here and now, and the living reality of the Divine principle incarnate in Sai Baba at this most crucial period of the planet's evolutionary history. There was, however, a question which was most vital to us—to hear from Swami's own lips—and Ron "plucked up courage" to ask it.
"Swami, you are reported as saying, on Christmas Day 1972, that Jesus said: 'He Who sent me among you will come again. His Name will be Truth. He will wear a blood red robe. He will be short, with a crown (of hair).' Does this mean that it was You Who sent Jesus into incarnation?"
With ineffable simplicity, never moving His eyes from Ron's, and in His soft, gentle voice, Swami nodded and said, "Yes."
Ron took a deep breath. "Then, in that case, are You what Western Christians call `The Cosmic Christ'?" (the Cosmic Christ spirit).
Again came that simple, gentle reply, "Yes."
As long as I live I shall see His face as He gave this answer in a manner no ordinary human being could assume—so direct, so simply, so gently, and completely ego less. For a few moments we said nothing, overcome by the impact of His reply.
Everywhere men and women of goodwill are expecting and praying for the Second Coming of the Cosmic Christ spirit. But whether they recognise it or not, it is here amongst us in the Embodiment of Selfless Love.

Lord Krishna’s friend Uddhava, was adept in the Path of Knowledge. He approached Krishna so that he can teach it to the cowherds. Krishna smiled and said, “Devotion and purity are fundamental to Gopikas – they are in Me, I am always enshrined in their hearts, you may not understand it!” Uddhava wasn’t convinced, so Lord Krishna sent him to Gokul. Uddhava said to them, “Let me teach you the path of wisdom to realize the Divine”. The Gopikas admonished Uddhava, “We don’t want to waste time on Yogas and Scriptures. Krishna is everything to us, give us one simple means.” Confused, Uddhava, now asked the Gopikas, “How would you become one with Krishna?” The innocent Gopikas responded, “If Krishna were a flower, I would be a bee whirling around Him. If Krishna were the mountain, I will become a river. If He is the deep ocean, I will be a small stream, joining Him”. Uddhava then understood that Gopikas always tuned themselves to adore the Lord, anywhere and everywhere.

Test is a taste of God. Unless you are tested, your determination will not become strong. Students often write three or four tests in a year. Why? Exams are not to trouble them, but to validate and strengthen their understanding of the subject. When they pass in flying colours, they are either promoted to higher classes or gain admission to very good Universities. God also does the same. Hence, welcome tests, not as a punishment, but as a protection. However hard they may be, you must clear it. Then you will definitely attain a higher state. God already knows who you are, but He may test you in order to set an ideal for others. What you see is one and what God sees is another. God tests you so all your sins and shortcomings are washed away. Just as gold is tested and attested for its purity, God’s tests are always for strengthening your courage, patience, determination and devotion.

At times, to get more protein and strength you may be recommended to consume animal foods like fish and poultry. Consuming non-vegetarian food is not required and you must avoid it. A healthy balanced diet of greens, milk, curds and grains will provide you with all required nourishment. There is a close relationship between your food, head and God. Animal foods will let you develop animal traits. Some may ask, do not plants have life and will they not suffer when we cut and cook them? All plants and vegetables have life, but lack the senses, just like a patient who is given anaesthesia during an operation lacks the awareness and pain of the doctor’s cuts and stitches. However animals have senses and when we cut them, they suffer intensely. To avoid bad thoughts, do not take excessive food, or that which is earned by unrighteous means, or non-vegetarian die t or food that is not offered to God.

- Divine Discourse, 'My Dear Students', Vol 2, Ch 4, Apr 22, 2000.

The Supreme Power appears in various or different forms. A devotee has to
remember that the goal of his/her devotion is to attain the Divine vision and
Divine Bliss. Bhakthi is not mere worshiping in a routine way, rather it is the
feeling that one gets into the heart when one commences to worship about
the real affinity towards the Supreme Power. It is must to purify the mind firstly.
Dhyanam has to be more effective combined with the chanting of the Namas.
The devotee should follow his/her path wholeheartedly.

Swami spoke on Holy Shivaratri Day. 24-2-1971.

1240362_10151887213811470_1209180484_n.jpg

Swami says that there are two types of Bhajans. One is the group singing which is time bound. The other Bhajan which Swami wants us to follow is the life long Bhajan, rendered in quietitude and silence, throughout our existence. I reproduce below extracts from Swami's Divine Discourse at the conclusion of the Sivrathri Bhajans on 24-2-1971.

“Throughout last night, you have sung Bhajans and kept vigil, as part of the Sivarathri Celebrations. This Ararhi marks the end of that Bhajan sessions; but, only of the outer, congregational, vocal part, and not of the inner solitary silent Bhajan that must be the very breath of your existence.”

“Bhajan is one of the processes by which you can train the mind to expand into eternal values. Teach the mind to revel in the glory and majesty of God; wean it away from petty horizons of pleasure. That is all that Bhajan or Puja or Vratha can do. Bhajan induces in you a desire for experiencing the truth, to glimpse the beauty that God is; taste the Bliss that is the Self; it encourages man to dive into himself and be genuinely his real self. Once that search is desired, the path is easy. One has only to be reminded that he is divine, for malady is: it is being thrust our of recognition. Exercises like Bhajan elevate the mind and exhort the individual to seek and find the source of eternal joy. that lies within him.”

“The Maha-sivarathri Festival is over; but, the message of the Day is yet fructify in your behavior, conduct, thinking and activity. Do not rest content with a night long Bhajan Make it a Life- long Bhajan, of adoration, of pilgrimage to the Lord within.”

Love & Regards, Mumbai Srinivasan

If one does selfless service, one's heart get purified. Besides, egoism,
hatred, jealousy, superiority over others get eliminated. Further one can
gain humility, sympathy towards others, tolerance, etc. Above all
selfishness is completely eradicated and also one gets broad outlook.
Because of selfless service, one gets generous views or opinion about
every aspect.

Selfless service leads to spiritual path. Selfless service can lead to salvation
in life. Selfless service brings clear consciousness and oneness/unity in
life. Selfless service paves the way for removal of selfishness.
Through selfless service one can understand the concept of charity,
need for helping the real needy, etc in the Society.

Meditation brings in joy, happiness and mental peace. In fact, it is
an exercise which can take a person towards self-discovering
with concentrated and objective mind. The mind becomes capable
of perceiving the spiritual dimensions, self-observation about realization
of life, etc. In fact, it energizes the body with complete focus on the
mind. The person is able to focus the attention on what is happening
in the outside world while one is also able to assess as to what is happening
in the inner mind, body and on emotions.

The chief objective of all Sadhana (spiritual striving) is to eliminate the mind, to become A-manaska. Then illusion will disappear and Reality will be revealed. During the dark fortnight of the month,Sadhana must be done to eliminate a fraction of the mind each day; for, every day, a fraction of the Moon is shrinking. On Chathurdasi(the 14th night), the night of Shiva, only a fraction of the moon remains. If some special effort is made that night, through more intensive and vigilant Sadhana, like puja, japam, dhyana (ritual worship & meditation), success is ensured. Hence, Shiva must be meditated upon that night, every month, without the mind straying towards thoughts of sleep or food. Once a year, on Mahashivaratri, a special spurt of spiritual activity is recommended, so that the Shav am (corpse) can become Shivam (God), through perpetual awareness of its Divine Indweller. Dedicate the vigil of this Shivaratri night to the Shiva present within each one of you.

During meditation, care must be taken to keep the back straight and steady without bending forward or backward or sideward. If you bend or move, misdirection of highly potent energy (Kundalini) can occur resulting in mental derangement. Also wear loose clothes. Your eyes must concentrate on the tip of the nose. They must be half-open, so you are neither distracted nor falling asleep. Free your mind from bad thoughts and fill it with sacred ones. To achieve this, you must control your senses. Your ears must be trained to listen only to noble and elevating ideas, and to eschew evil speech and gossip. Your eyes must be tuned to see the Divine. The restless mind must be restrained by making it concentrate on inhalation and exhalation while incessantly repeating the Mantra, ‘So-Ham’ (I am He). Through these postures and activities , your life-breath is controlled and this will ensure that the great power of Yoga is revealed unto you.

Spiritual practice or sadhana is generally unique and depends
on the devotee's determination. Spiritual practice can be of
any type. For e.g. prayer, meditation, fasting, chanting of
mantras, study of scriptures, etc. with an aim to achieve
spiritual means. Bhajans are also performed to inculcate spiritual
practice. Sometimes spiritual practices become difficult and generally
turns into uphill task. One should not brood over the past deeds
or mistakes and failures, if any. One has to adapt oneself to any
kind of environment or circumstances quickly for fast mental growth,
because sound disturbs the mind to a great extent in meditation.
Practice of pranayama and light sattwic diet will enable to combat
certain obstacles. Samskaras can be successful only if one is able
to drive away the evil spirits and bad association because sometimes
they influence in disturbing them. Indigestion and constipation can also
disturb. Cheerful thoughts, bhajans singing, prayer, pranayama, etc
can ease the mental stress and depression. Laziness and carelessness
have to be overcome. Practise self-analysis at periodical invervals
is absolutely essential. Patience and forbearance are most impaortant
virtues. Compassion, adaptability, tolerance, etc. are inescapable
for spiritual transformation.

The restless mind must be restrained by making it concentrate on inhalation and exhalation while incessantly repeating the Mantra,‘So-Ham’ (I am He). Through these postures and activities , your life-breath is controlled and this will ensure that the great power ofYoga is revealed unto you.

If you throw a pebble in a pond, a small ripple originates and spreads until the end of the river. You may or may not be able to see, but the ripple starts right at the point where the stone meets the water. Similarly, in the lake of your mind, when you throw a stone of thought, ripples of thought waves start spreading throughout your body. The same ripple reflects in your eyes, brain, ears, heart and also in your hands and legs. Hence you must be very careful with the kind of thoughts that you permit to pervade your personality. When you get pure thoughts, all your senses will be purified by it. However, if you get bad thoughts, your senses will be perverted and this will quickly spread to your eyes, heart, hand and brain. Always have pure thoughts. If you do so, your body, senses and actions will be purified.
