Dhyana is nothing but form a concentration of mind. It allows
the mind to focus on a particular thing. Meditation is essential
to get an enlightenment towards spiritual freedom. Above all,
meditation is important to reduce stress better than anything else.
Meditation will facilitate to improve the immunity. Meditation also
facilitates to improve the nature of sleep. Meditation if regularly
practiced one can easily come out of anxiety or depression besides
controlling the anger. It has a psychological effect in a person.
Meditation brings in positive thinking. Further, it develops a
habit of cultivating improved concentration on any issue.

"Ichcha-Shakti (the Will Power) arises from thoughts. This 'Iccha-Shakti' is the source of several other potencies like intellectual power, the discriminating capacity and others. To develop this 'Ichcha-Shakti' (Will Power), one has to worship Devi.

This calls for the cultivation of renunciation or detachment. For instance, if one has a desire for various drinks, he can bring the desire under control by giving up, to begin with, the desire for some of them. Thereby the Will Power (Ichcha-Shakti) is developed, and in due course, it becomes easier to give up other desires.

In Vedantic parlance, this is described as 'Vairaagya' (renouncing all attachments). Vairaagya is not abandonment of hearth and home and retiring to a forest. It means developing godly thoughts and reducing worldly feelings. It is when this balanced development takes place that one acquire-control over the powers of nature (Praakrita Shakti). When these powers are got, the mental power in a person increases."

We often say, “I am performing all actions in this world for the sake of God”. Is it real? Are you doing all the tasks to please God, or is it for your own self? Contemplate on this. Every devotee (Sadhaka) does many different activities, for their own sake and not for the sake of God. Listening, singing the glory of the Lord, chanting His name, serving the divine feet, salutation, worship, servitude, friendship and Self-surrender – all these nine forms of devotion, are for your own good, and not for God’s benefit. Consider this example. You are eating an apple. Is it for the benefit of the apple, that you are eating it? No, it is for your own health! Similarly your actions, worship or meditation is only for your own happiness and satisfaction. The only thing God cares for is purity and steadfastness. Purity in thought, word and a ctions is all that matters to God.

Maha Shivarathri in Prasanthi Nilayam…

Auspicious night of Shiva, Maha Shivarathri bhajans commenced in glittering fashion with much religious fervour this evening here in Prasanthi Nilayam. Prior to the commencement of the night-long vigil, Akhanda Bhajan, a Maha Rudrabhishekam to ‘Saieeswara Lingam’ was offered commencing the evening proceedings.
At the scheduled hour, at 1600 hrs., the famed Saieeswara Lingam, sanctified by the Divine Hands during the 2006 Atirudram, was brought to the venue in a regal palanquin procession, from the Bhajan hall amidst Vedic chantings.
shivarathri2014_1.jpg

Lord Shiva Who is hailed as Abhisheka Priya is mightly pleased by sacred offerings. This evening’s Maha Rudrabhishekam had 18 types offerings to Saieswara Lingam. The offerings included milk, curd, ghee, honey, sugar, fruits, tender coconut water, flower, yellow rice, sandalwood paste, vibhuti, bilwa leaves, sugarcandy juice, rudraksha, darbha grass, gold, turmeric, kumkum (vermillion) etc. with each individual offerings bear spiritual religious significance. These 18 offerings are meant to appease the Indweller within, Who is verily Sai Shiva. Laghu Arathi was offered intermittently during the Rudrabhishekam.
shivarathri2014_2.jpg

After the abhishekam offerings even as the Saieeshwara Lingam was being decked up, Rudram, Chamakam chantings continued followed by Sathya Sai Sahasra Namavali before the final offering of Mangala Arathi marking the end of the Maha Rudrabhishekam.
Satsangha is the identificaion with the Oneness, echoed Bhagawan ‘delivering’ His Shivarathri Divine discourse elucidating on the real meaning of Satsangha. Bhagawan ended His Divine discourse with the bhajan “Sathyam Jnanan Anantam Brahma…” that marked the commencement of Akhanda Bhajan.

During the bhajans the abhishekam water was sprinkled on the large concourse of devotees assembled in the Sai Kulwant Hall. The night-long Akhanda Bhajans will continue until morning 0600 hrs. when Mangala Arathi will be offered.
Earlier, reminiscing the great good fortune of celebrating Shivarathri in the immediate Divine Presence students from SSSIHL offered a musical devotional offering at Bhagawan’s Lotus Feet on the morning at Sai Kulwant Hall in Prasanthi Nilayam.
shivarathri2014_3.jpg

Interspersed with commentary on the significance of Maha Shivarathri, the morning offering had eight musical gems, including some hymns, sing with professional elan mixed with great devotional fervour. The songs included Viswanathashtakam…, Hara Hara Shankara Parthi Pureeshwara…, Lingashtakam…, Shambho Mahadeva…, Natanam Aadie Njaan…etc…

Prayer purifies your mind and strengthens your spirit. If bhajans are done in an ostentatious manner, ego gets bloated. Young people must proceed from tamas, the darkness of ignorance, to tapas, spiritual austerities. Be steadfast in pursuing whatever you choose. There is no point in doing meditation for two days and giving up on the third day. If you start practicing meditation, it must become an integral part of your life. You cannot assume you are meditating by merely closing your eyes. You must progress until you feel united with the God present within your heart. Along with meditation, you must acquire the knowledge and skills to lead your professional life. You must always maintain the same discipline and strength of character , wherever you are.

A sweet word is the most valuable thing; through it one we can win a person over, give great joy and even attain a higher status. When crows caw at us, we throw stones at them. Whereas, when cuckoos sing, we respect them. Neither is the cuckoo going to give us a crown, nor will the crow punish us. When one’s speech is good, one earns a good name. Hence, a sweet word is indeed the sweetest thing in the world.” You must always talk to others in a manner which would give them contentment and joy. This is the essence of all scriptures. It is not enough to listen to, learn or chant Vedas, scriptures andPuranas (ancient spiritual texts), you must give joy and satisfaction to others.

When Bhagawan was talking about the principle of Brahma to us during His Golden discourse decades ago, not a single word was being understood by us. Not a single word entered into our heads. But Kumbakarna, the sleeping demon reigned supreme and swayed us all with his powers into his fold. It was a mixed gathering. Some were found laughing at themselves due to their sleepy state. Some were shy with the feeling if others would have caught them napping. Some were blank and baffled at their predicament not knowing where they were. The gathering appeared depressed, unable to understand what Swami was saying.
Bhagawan observed the pathetic plight of the audience and gave a compassionate smile at the dumbfounded gathering. Then Swami lovingly impressed upon us. ‘This Divine principle of Brahma is very difficult to understand and really taxes the brain. This cannot be grasped easily. You would feel the head becoming heavy and numb. But at the same time you cannot forsake this. It is the beacon of light for leading the true life. It is the Royal Path, which leads you to salvation. Hence all should listen attentively, understand and enjoy the bliss. One should struggle and undergo any amount of difficulties to perceive the Truth.”
On hearing Swami say this all of us shyly bent our heads in shame. Let’s not be overcome by shame and feel bad about it, but plunge into action by marching forward.

At times, you may feel dissatisfied with the answers you wrote, even though you have spent a lot of time reading. Why? Because when you are preparing for examinations, mere reading is not sufficient. You may read at home and feel confident of writing well in the exam hall, but that doesn’t work. You must necessarily practice at home what you do in the examination hall. That is why you should often practice writing the answers. Many things which you do not understand clearly while reading, becomes easier to comprehend when you write. The more you write and practice at home, the better you will do in the examination hall. I will also share another secret for your success: In the examination hall, before receiving the question paper, you should first pray. Receive the question paper after your prayer. Then slowly read the question paper and start answering the easy questions first and the difficult ones towards the end.

- ‘My Dear Students’, Vol 3, Ch 1, 'Success in Examinations'.

It is about how to communicate with the Supreme Power while doing a prayer.
There is a saying that we may not be able to call the Supreme Power either on
the telephone or send Him a letter, but prayer is just as real as an email.
The Supreme Power is so good that he helps everyone in distress and HE
makes everyone happy, removes sadness or from sickness. The Supreme Power
will give us the needed wisdom, strength and understanding if we only pray to
Him. In fact, to be precise, HE is ready to give us many good things as long as
one extends his/her prayer to HIM. HE answers the prayers with signs. Hence
children should be taught the method of prayer and dedication in doing it.
As one starts praying with HIM, the relationship gets extended and one can
notice the progress in life. Swami Vivekanand in his article has clearly mentioned
about the secrets of prayer : One has to do Practice, practice, practice and more
practice and once this is done, prayer becomes a routine one and the children
do this activity in their entire life without any flaw.

We call many our friends. But who is our true friend? As long as you have money in your pocket, or if your parents are in a good position, everyone will greet you, “Hello, Hello” and treat you nicely. If things change and you do not have money, nobody will even tell you, “Goodbye!” When the tank is full, all frogs go there. If it is empty, you will not find even a single frog! However, God is not like that. He has a tank that is ever full of selfless love. In any situation, His tank is full of nectarous sweet love. Changes in your position, place or time or status will not matter to Him. Why do you give up such a true friend and struggle to attain worldly, temporary and untrue friends, whose friendship is ephemeral and lasts for only a short time? Pray that you win an eternal friendship with the Lord.

Ego is nothing but self-pride. There are plenty of methods
to eliminate one's ego. One has to jot down daily in a book
as to what good and bad things he/she has executed. If one finds
more bad things, he or she has to find out the abstract reason and
analyse as to whether they are due to greed, anger and
hatred etc. If a person slightly diverts his/her mind towards
the divine acts, the infinite Supreme power will certainly
pave the way to eliminate the ego step by step. One has to
sort out on finding out the abstract reasons as to whether
that might sound reasonable or note and disassociate from it.

ASATO MAA SAD GAMAYA - A vedic mantra
ASATO MAA SAD GAMAYA
TAMASO MAA JYOTIR GAMAYA
MRITYOR MAA AMRITAM GAMAYAA
**********
O Mother!
Lead me from the unreal to the real
From the darkness to the light
From death(of the ego) to immortality
************
Swami says:

Asato maa is the shanti-mantra. The mantra for inner peace. In short it means:

From untruth lead me to to Truth, from darkness lead me to light, from death lead me to immortality.

Even for being blessed by the Lord's Grace, one must have shanti (Inner Peace) and await patiently. Serenity alone succeeds in bringing about the result of Sadhana (spiritual practice). Add this lesson to the practices you are engaged in, night and day, and to the Shanti Mantra.

"Asatho maa sadgamaya;
thamaso maa jyothirgamaya;
mrityor maa amritham gamaya,"

This is the Shanti Mantra. The meaning of this mantra is given variously by various people, some elaborately, some succulently.

" O, Lord, when I am deriving happiness through the objects of this world, make me forget the unreal objects and show me the way to permanent happiness." This is the first prayer.
"O, Lord, when the objects of the World attract me, remove the darkness which hides the all-pervading Atma, which every such object really is." This is the second prayer.
"O. Lord, bless me through Your Grace with Immortality or Paramananda, resulting from the awareness of the Effulgence of the Atma, immanent in every object." This is the third prayer.
This is the real meaning of the Mantra.

It also means:

From this transient world of decay, lead me to the everlasting world of Bliss;
Give me the effulgence of Thy Grace and illumine my soul with truth; Save me from the torture of birth and death, destroy the cravings of the mind which produce the seeds of birth.

Lesson No1.

“We cannot sense the mystery of His Play. We have failed to understand it. There is no profit in worrying over that failure, now. With that deluding Human Form, He moved with us, mixed with us, dined with us, behaved as if He was our Kinsman and well-wisher, our friend and guide, and saved us from many a calamity that threatened to overwhelm us. He showered His Divine Mercy on us and solved for us the toughest problems that defied solution, in remarkably simple ways.”

Lesson No 2.

“During all this time that He was near and dear to us, we were carried away by pride that we had His Grace; we did not try to fill ourselves with that Supreme Joy, to dive deep into the Flood of His Grace. We sought from Him mere external victory and temporal benefits. We ignored the vast Treasure with which we could have filled our hearts. We never contemplated on His Real Reality.”

Lesson No 3.

“He guarded us as if we five were the Five Vital Airs (Panchaprana) for Him. He came forward to help us and lead us in every undertaking, however small; and He fulfilled it for us. Brother! What shall I say? We might be born many times over, but we can never get again such a Friend and Kinsman. I have received from Him love much more intense than that of a mother, a love which no mother can confer.”

Lesson No 4.

“On many an occasion He bore the burdens of the Pandavas as His own and to relieve us of the bother, He used to plan measures within minutes and carry them on to final success. It is due to the gift of His Grace that we Pandavas have survived in this world to this day. “Why repeat a thousand things separately? Every drop of blood coursing through these veins is but a drop from the shower of His Grace. Every muscle is but a lump of His Love. Every bone and cartilage is but a piece of His mercy.”

Lesson No 5.

“Unable to understand this secret, we strutted about, boasting ‘I achieved this,’ and ‘I accomplished this.’ Now it has become clear to us that without Him we are but bags of skin. “Of course, the fate of all men is the same. They forget that the All-ruling, All-knowing Almighty plays with them as puppets; they assume that they are the actual doers and enjoyers; like me they are plunged in ignorance of the basic truth. When we who are far-famed heroes and warriors are in this sad plight, what can we say of ordinary folk who have no chance of awakening into this Jnana?”

Bhagavan’s divine discourse delivered during Dussera 2005 is a source of great solace and wisdom in this most challenging time in every devotee’s life as we deal with our sorrow at the irreparable loss of the Physical form of our beloved Swami and at the same time get awakened to take up the challenge of leading our lives in complete accordance with His teachings with courage & conviction and with unquestionable faith in His Omnipresence, Omniscience and Omnipotence.

Inner meaning of SARVA DHARMA PREYER

Om Tat Sat Sri Narayana Tu

Purushottama Guru Tu

Siddha Buddha Tu Skanda Vinayaka

Savita Pavaka Tu

Brahma Mazda Tu Yahve Shakti Tu

Ishu Pita Prabhu Tu

Rudra Vishnu Tu Rama Krishna Tu

Rahima Tao Tu

Vasudeva Go-Vishvarupa Tu

Chidananda Hari Tu

Advitiya Tu Akala Nirbhaya

Atmalinga Shiva Tu

`Ekam Sat, Vipra Bahudaa Vadanti'
Truth is one, described variously by scholars. This is how god, another name for Truth, has been explained in an ancient Hindu Scripture.

In this prayer, it appears as though the devotee identified with the Supreme Consciousness (again a name for God!) exultantly discovers God hiding behind many names, forms and personages, in fact, Creation itself.

Om is the sound symbol of God; `tat' means `that'; `Sat' means `truth'. "Truth" does not merely refer to only mean factuality as commonly perceived, but the everlasting and unchanging.

So,
Om Tat Sat means what is everlasting and unchanging is God, whose infinite Existence – Consciousness Bliss is denoted by Om.

Aum Tat Sat
pronounces Supreme Absolute Truth and is indeed a mantra. Aum represents the transcendental reality that is beyond attributes, beyond gunas, beyond name and form and beyond maya. Therefore, Aum is the supreme, transcendental being. Tat

is "That"
; Sat is existence. So, That is real and this existence is also real. Thus, when making this statement we must see reality on both planes, the immanent as well as the transcendent

The devotee begins by saying "Oh! God! You are the One indicated by the sacred sound Om!"
Whereas Om essentially suggests a formless and nameless

Sri Narayana can be interpreted in the following ways:-

- Narayana (Lord) is bhaivaprapti (present in places even where chetnas or achetnas are not present, Antarprapti ( present in all chetnas or achetnas). So to say that God is present in all beings ( as atman) and all beings are present in Him( paramatman). - Narayana is upaya, i.e. means for all jivas to attain salvation.
Purushottama refers to paramatman, who is higher than the perishable (kshara) and imperishable (akshara). Purushottama means the self of all seves. The one without a second, te supreme self.

Guru
is one who removes the darkness of Maya (Ignorance), thus helping us realize our essential Self. Guru can be interpreted in 2 ways. First, as Sadguru who guides us towards self- realization (LORD) and as the supreme guru residing within each one of us( consciousness or Atman).

Siddha
means one who has been victorious by winning the knowledge of the Self; it refers to Self-realized saints. The knowers of Brahman (another name for God) are verily Brahman. Thus, it means," Lord, you are present in all those realized souls, sidhas. They realize you and you are in them.

Buddha
refers to Gautama Buddha. The word means one with perfect consciousness and wisdom.

Skandha
the commander of divine forces, is also known as Subrahmanya, Muruga, etc. His six eyes represent six divine qualities that Lord possess- Omniscience, Omnipotence, Omnipresence, Non attachment, grace and glory. Full manifestation of these six qualities can be found only in Brahman and in a poorna avataar, who is direct manifestation of Brahman. Thus, Skandha is not the son of shiva only but is a manifestation of Brahman.

Vinayaka
is the elephant-faced form of God, who was manifested by goddess Parvati, the consort of Shiva. He represents the power of discrimination and has to be worshipped to win over the various obstacles in life.

Savita
means the sun while Paavaka fire or heat. Brahma is the form God assumes when he undertakes Creation.

Maazda
is the name for God in Zorastrianism. Ahura Maazda, the all-good and all-auspicious.

Yahava
refers to Yehovah, the name Jews have given to God. It means "I am" implying that the Self that is behind all selves is God.

Shakthi
is the Primal energy, personified as the goddess Aadi Parashakthi. Shakthi is neither male nor female. Shakthi is worshipped in feminine form only to re iterate the qualities of compassion, all loving and tolerent to fault. Shakti is cosmic form, worshipped as supreme mother.

Yesu
refers to Jesus and the word means Saviour. Pitha Prabhu refers to the Father aspect of God. Or Yesu Pitha Prabhu, taken as a single name, can mean the Holy father of Jesus.

Rudra
is the aspect of Lord Shiva engaged in the destruction of evil of sorrow, and ignorance. .

Vishnu
refers to the protective or sustaining function of God. The root meaning, however, is: one who is all-pervasive but hidden, i.e, the immanent aspect of God.

Rama and Krishna
are the well known Avatars of God. The words mean respectively, one who gives happiness under all circumstances and one who is attractive and who ploughs the field of the mind for the growth of spiritual wisdom.

Rahim
is the name of God used by Muslims; it means the one who is incomparably merciful.

Tao
is the name of God used by Lao Tse, the Chinese philosopher. It means `the way' which implies the eternally Right Way of living.

Vaasudeva
can mean the son of Vasudeva i.e., Krishna. Krishna however, being already referred to the root meaning of the word (incidently one of `the thousand names of God') is relevant here: `one who has created the universe and occupies it immanently'.

Vishvarupa
means `in the form of observed universe'. It refers to the all pervading brahman or the universal consciousness in which the whole universe is contained.

Chidananda Hari
means `one who is omniscient and ever blissful'. He removes ignorance and sorrow, fulling the heart with Love. Again, chidananda refers to brahman.

Advitiya
means `without a second'. Saying God is `Without a second' a more direct way of asserting that God is one', because `one' inevitably brings the association of a second. This is to assert that whatever we see, all living and nonliving objects- are all one. Everything is God, everything is a part of Nirakara nirguna parabrahman.

Akaala
means timeless. God is beyond time.

Nirbhaya
means fearless. Of whom shall God be afraid of ?! Only God exists as atman in jivas at individual level and as paramatman at universal level.

Atma Linga
refers to Hiranyagarbha — the golden ovoid — symbolising the first manifestation of the formless Atma, which can be taken both as the individual and Universal Self. Unless the devotee perceives himself as Atma Linga, he cannot experience Divinity.

Shiva
is third of the Trinity manifestation of supreme Consciousness, responsible for dissolution of Creation. Shiva Protects the devotee by destroying his evil qualities. Shiva can also refer to the Supreme consciousness Itself

THE FOLLOWING POINTS ARE WORTH PONDERING AND REALIZING, EACH TIME WE CHANT THIS PRAPYER TOWARDS THE END OF THE BHAJAN SESSION, BEFORE ARATI
1) THE PRAYER IS IN FACT THE PRAYER REVEALING THE SUPREME CONSCIOUSNESS AND NOT MERELY A SARVADHARMA PRAYER, JUST BECAUSE IT CONTAINS THE NAMES OF GOD(S) OF VARIOUS RELIGIONS.

2) THE PRAYER'S FIRST WORD- "AUM TATSAT" AND THE LAST WORD "ATMA LINGA", BOTH MEAN `SUPREME CONSCIOUSNESS'.

3) A DEVOTEE CAN REACH THE HIGHEST LEVEL IN SPIRITUAL WISDOM, ULTIMATE JNANA, WHEN THE DEVOTEE, WHILE SINGING THIS PRAYER, IS ABLE TO ADDRESS THE " TUM" IN EACH LINE TO TWO ASPECTS – ONE IS "I", THAT IS THE JIVATMA (not the lower i, which is one's ego) AND THE OTHER IS "HE" ( which is nirguna nirakara parabrahman). ONCE A SADHAKA REACHES THIS LEVEL, THEN HE FULLY REALIZES THE MEANING OFB "TAT TWAM ASI" OR "AHAM BRAHMASMI" OR "I AM GOD".

SAIRAM

Gratitude is a supreme virtue. Ingratitude is a grievous sin.

There is no means of atonement for the ungrateful person.

A man without this supreme virtue of gratitude is worse than a cruel animal.

Having received his wealth, education and skills from society, if he does not serve the cause of society, his wealth, education and skills are but a sheer waste.

Man is a creature of society and owes everything to society.

If you wish to safeguard your future, you have to be grateful to those who have helped you in your difficult times and enabled you to obtain your personal needs.

Some students aim to just pass the examination or get perhaps 60%. Low aim is a crime. Who will tolerate or accept any work that is done 40% or 50%? Low marks tend to speak poorly of yourself – so never aim low, you must aim high. You should target a high 98%, then you will definitely cross at least 75%. ‘Success begets Success’, so in any examination, begin answering easy questions first, properly numbering and tracking them. Then, you will feel encouragement from within to continue to write, and slowly be able to handle even the difficult questions as well. On the other hand, if you begin with tough questions, then you may get depressed quickly in the limited time. Depression leads to confusion, which in turn leads to loss of memory. Then, even if you know the answer, you will not be able to answer correctly. So to have the right kind of enthusiasm you must answer easy questions first.

All materials in this world will disappear after some time. The principle of Atma alone is imperishable. What is the Atmic Principle? That which pervades the entire body is Atma. You should try to broaden your mind by which you can merge in Divine Consciousness. For example, take a balloon and blow it. It grows bigger and bigger. As it gradually increases size, it also becomes thinner. After a point it becomes so thin than it bursts. Where does the air in that balloon go? It merges with the air outside, which is present everywhere. Thus conscience merges with the consciousness which is present everywhere. This is referred to as liberation, the final goal or emancipation. You can give it many names; they are not important. The goal is important. You must try to achieve this unity with Consciousness, and you can attain this by practising spirituality at all times with all your determination.

What is the objective of ‘studying’? You must study to become steady. When you have a steady mind, you can prosper. Your mind should not move like the pendulum of a clock. See to it that the Divine Love in your heart is steady. The goal of education should not be to just acquire theoretical knowledge but to practically apply it in your life. Your education should be for life and not for a mere living. Birds and animals lead life without ‘studying’, but your education must result in you developing a strong and good character. In this life, the only high aspiration you must have is for God. Many people collect a lot of information from newspapers and other sources, trying to find out what happened in Germany, USA, etc. These are good to know, but not very important. Four days before Swami’s birthday, He would order us to make laddus. That year He asked us to make 50,000 laddus. We would call all the devotees at Nilayam and we all made laddus repeating His Name. The festival had come and the laddus were ready. For every festival we would serve food to all present. Before serving, we would put all the items on different plates and place those in front of Swami. We would garland Him, give arathi and then offer each item to Him as naivedyam, and only then take it for serving. Unfortunately i was holding the laddu plate this time. I went to Swami and showed the plate. Swami said, “I do not want them. They were offered to Me yesterday already. I do not want them now.”
All were shocked listening to this. I felt like crying and said, “How could they have been offered Swami, i kept them safely.” One lady who helped make the laddus was standing there holding some curry. She immediately put the vessel down and fell at Swami’s Feet and cried, “i have made a mistake. While making laddus i could not resist the temptation due to its sweet smell. Before washing my hands, i licked my hands. No one knew this. Omniscient Lord Sai knows this, which is why He said that it was alredy offered yesterday. I made a mistake. Please forgive me and accept, Swami.” Sawmi said, “Seethamma! Did I mention your name? Why are you revealing yourself and crying?” Swami laughed. All laughed. I felt bad because I was holding the plate. Swami asked us to start serving. Later, either because she cried or I cried, compassionate Swami called me over and took a small part of the laddu and ate it. We s aid, “Sathya Sai Bhagawan Ki Jai,” and served happily.
