Sastrigals not following ethics or taditions

On, one of my father’s srardham day, few years back, my then family Sastrigal was promising to attend to the srardham since morning and by about 12.00 noon when I enquired about his location his cool reply was that he is at Tiruvallur, nearly 50 KMs away from Chennai.

In another instance, on the day when my father-in-law breathed his last, I had great difficulty in fixing a Sastrigal of Sama Vedham for the funeral rituals.

Such incidents do happen and on such occasions, I only remember Murphy’s law.

VBji
at some point aasthikas may lose faith in them and go for CD and such options

IMO change in life style is inevitable. Instead of these Sastrigal calling after their clientele, they are going to sit in an Audio Recording Theatre and chant these mantras meant for various rituals and this is going to be recorded and marketed in CD and other forms for the use of their own clientele. That could be the only change I presume.

My family Physician in Coimbatore used tell that " the economics law of diminishing returns apply to Doctors and Vadhyars" . At the time of emergency both are offered what ever they demand, but once the emergency was over their usefulness diminish as also their fees. How true it is now.

Brahmanyan,
Bangalore.

And these guys rarely pay taxes .. these are tax free income :-)

K - Interesting episodes indeed :-) I have one more

Some years ago one Vadhyar wanted my help to negotiate purchase of a nice car - he travels all around and it was one of the early purchase as he was establishing himself. I had prior research on exactly what the model cost the dealer, advertising cost, so called dealer hold back etc ...

My Vaddhyar had come with his wife and was frequently interjecting 'God will bless you etc' and in broken English told the sales guy that he visits over 100 homes and that he will put in a good name to all those people for the sales guy and as a bonus provide blessings from an Indian God... That fellow took a liking to this guy... Finally there was this part about paying down payment. His wife opened her purse and started giving over $1500 in bills of $1, $5 and $10 .... This sales guy was asking if this fellow is a priest or manages a strip club with all these bills coming out of the Vaddhyar's wife's purse all crumpled ...

Anyway it was hilarious - these fellows do well and are super aggressive. One thing is he did not want any of his children to become Vaddhyars ..

all cash. no receipt. how much they pay in taxes, only they and the taxman knows. )

delhi is fast catching up . it is 35-40 K rs per wedding ,30-35 krs per funeral and not turning up for lesser functions. iyengars vadhyars are at a premium and have to be booked in advance 4-8 weeks for a wedding . iyers sastrigals offer slightly discounted rates. better have north indian ones for funerals as south indians are not easily available on the day of funeral due to their prior commitments.pl do not shed tears for them. many have vehicles and flats. their children are executives in MNCs

Mr. K,
Wedding will cost around $2,000 and funeral $1,000, ganapathi homan $500 and such.
The rates are in line in USA plus travel cost.
Our temple priest makes about $50,000.00 in salary + $50,000.00 in reported income (I do advice him on Taxes) + Cash.

Good stuff!! here is another viable career path!!

My son has one young priest as his AsthAna sAsthrigaL. He demands only fuel charges +$ 150 and also enjoys the

home made food, after the poojA. Not very expensive. He lives in New Hampshire, about one hour drive form Boston.

How does your son use the services of a Sastrigal .. Regular pooja etc?

Dear Brahmanyan Sir,

My dad received a poem on the point that your family doctor told.

But, it compares God and the Doctor. Here goes........

"God and the Doctor we alike adore,

But only in danger, not before,

The danger over, both are alike requited;

God is forgotten and the doctor slighted!"

I can never forget this nice poem! :)

Dear Kunjuppu Sir,

The AsthAna sAsthirgaLs of affluent families - who spend 4 lakhs on wedding reception stage alone - charge that high.

But, if you go near Siva - Vishnu temple in T'nagar, you can get a glance of poor sastrigaLs, who eagerly await for an

invitation at least for a noon meal, from someone!

ask them if they will go to delhi for making a living they ,I bet will say no. most who are in delhi are from deep south, desperate to make a good living. these madras based fellows fed on freebies are not prepared to be enterprising and move elsewhere to make a good living. sorry ,no sympathy for this lot

Dear Sir,

He had his 'Gruhapravesam' poojAs (Ganapathi hOmam and Navagraha hOmam).

He and our DIL could not come down here for 'Seemantham' and it was performed there.

Only very close friends were invited. Both side parents could not attend.

The list of items to be bought is given by e-mail, well in advance. :)

Krish ji,

When I was at Delhi on deputation for few years, I also experienced difficulty in fixing Sastrigal. I stayed at Mayapuri.

I think the food habits, language and climatic conditions of Delhi should be taken into consideration.

Here, we can find Sastrigal on all the 365 days with Panchakacham and Angavastram , but this is not possible at Delhi I believe especially during winter season. I don't know how they manage.

Here Sastrigal do wear a Jippa and sweater in winter..Many also have the muffler & woolen hat..Some wear thermal pyjama below the Panchakacham

I have seen sastrigal/gurukkal with panchakacham and bare top with angavastram only in sri laksmi temple in Ashland New England USA even during December. I myself was also asked to remove my upperwares to chant "Purusha sooktham and Sri sooktham"

Hi tech.prohitham !!
Dear Sir,

This prohit was in my son's house! But we had Hi-tech prohitam once in the U S of A. My brother in law in Philly

was guided by his son in law from Detroit, through 'skype', on the yajur upAkarma day!

Dear Madam,
I don' t think it is wrong in anyway to use modern hitech facility as long as there is sraddha to sustain our tradition.

When my sister in law was performing Varalakshmi pooja and busy repeating the manthrams, the sasthrigaL recited the starting

manthram again. Startled, she looked at him and noted that he was on his cell phone, directing another lady to start the pooja.

Reason: Time was 10.15 am and he could not reach that lady's house within 15 minutes. :car:
