Spatika Lingam at Home

Sir,

Try to learn the basic pooja. One book brought our by the Sringeri Ashramam titled "Sree Siva Panchaayatana Poojaa Paddhati" will be useful. If you do daily pooja then it is not necessary to give it to temple.

Naivedyam of cooked raw rice in proportion to the size of the vigraham has to be offered daily without fail; simple flower and Arathi will not suffice. For all normal sized sphatika lingams (up to 4 or 5 inches height) usually half a cup of raw rice taken and cooked will be sufficient, I feel. But you will better consult some well-informed sastrigal in this matter.

there is a lot of faith involving spatika lingam in the home. my uncle had one, and even when he came to the usa he brought it with him, as it is mandatory to have daily certain type of prayers. (the conversation explaining it to the u.s. customs was interesting and went on for 45 minutes..but that is another story :) ).

on his death, some relatives wanted it. his own son did not. but per family consensus, it was dropped off at sankara matam in kanchi. too much of a responsibility apparently to maintain it.

if you believe in all this, do the right thing. otherwise treat it as just another piece of object of worship.

incidentally in kasi, spatika is available in the chettiar shop near the ghats, and is sold as a commodity. it is available for any tourist like the copper plated vishnu paadham or kasi charadu. so i think it is all a matter of faith as to the level of revernce that you associate with it.

as a saivite, i am in awe of spatikam and do not have it in my home.
