He has highly refined sense of music and sing songs like Jai Jagadeesa hare!

Surely it must have hurt his ears to hear the popular song thus labeled by him :)

dear VR !
i really wonder if he can say like that .i came across many children are singing that song with great joy.if he says kuppaith thotti pattu it may be the repetition of some of the elders saying

I met a family in Frankfurt. The couple had 4 toddlers

aged ~4, ~3, ~2, and the youngest > 1 year old.

The father had great trouble in keeping the children in place.

They were feeling at home and running all over the airport.

The youngest fellow crawled in between the other passengers,

reminding me of the movie Baby's day out.

Inside the fight the father was carrying them to the toilet in batches. :tsk:

I had a friend from Orissa, who did not know she was pregnant with her second child until the child started moving inside her. She complained of gas problem and went to the doctor. Surely she must have been shocked when the doctor told her it was not a gas but a solid baby.

dear Renu!

Did you or did you not observe the Varalakshmi Nonbu???

I saw your post but did not know the formalities.

I am not allowed to go to temple on the death anniversary of my parents in law.

But some nonbus may be exempted from these rules.

So I was not sure about it.

I was hoping for an answer cos I was not too sure myself..so you see I did this.
I prayed to God and told Him to bless my husband and I ate in the afternoon(cos since it was my MIL's death anniversary I was not too sure if a Vrat can be observed)

Normally I keep fast from morning 6am to 6pm evening without food and water.
Anyway..Karva Chaut is also there..so I will keep fast on Karva Chaut.

I read your question. I asked Padma. She said in our family we don't even observe any vratham. All we do is just perform a Lakshmi pooja and be done with that. Since I did not have any answer I did not make a comment. ( Her answer was funny! Think, worth sharing.. she said "வர லக்ஷ்மி, வராத லக்ஷ்மி யாருக்கும் நம்மாத்துல வ்ரதம் இல்லைப்பா! பூஜை பண்ணிட்டு பாயசம் பண்ணி சாப்பிட வேண்டியதுதான்!).

1. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley and rye.

2. Gluten is not bad for our health.

3. Some people have difficulty digesting gluten.

4. Gluten is a component of grains and cereals.

5. Many grains don’t include any gluten.

6. So what really is gluten???

7. If grains can exist without gluten, then gluten cannot be grain!

8.Amaranth, oats, buck wheat, and soybeans are all gluten free foods.

Considering these facts won't it look very funny when

tomato ketchups, tooth pastes and other items which do not

contain ANY grain (with or without gluten)

being advertised as "gluten-free" ??

Allergy to peanuts appears to be on the rise. One study showed that from 1997 to 2002, the incidence of peanut allergy doubled in children. Peanuts can trigger a severe reaction. The severity of a reaction depends on how sensitive an individual is and the quantity consumed.

Some Unexpected Sources of Peanut

  • Sauces such as chili sauce, hot sauce, pesto, gravy, mole sauce, and salad dressing
  • Sweets such as pudding, cookies, and hot chocolate
  • Egg rolls
  • Potato pancakes
  • Pet food
  • Specialty pizzas
  • Asian and Mexican dishes
  • Some vegetarian food products, especially those advertised as meat substitutes
  • Foods that contain extruded, cold-pressed, or expelled peanut oil, which may contain peanut protein
  • Glazes and marinades
*Note: This list highlights examples of where peanuts have been unexpectedly found (i.e., on a food label for a specific product, in a restaurant meal, in creative cookery, etc.) This list does not imply that peanuts are always present in these foods; it is intended to serve as a reminder to always read the label and ask questions about ingredients before eating a food that you have not prepared yourself.
Keep in Mind

  • Some alternative nut butters, such as soy nut butter or sunflower seed butter, are produced on equipment shared with other tree nuts and, in some cases, peanuts. Contact the manufacturer before eating these products.
  • Discuss with your primary doctor or allergist whether to avoid tree nuts. People allergic to peanuts may develop allergies to other foods, including tree nuts. In addition, the chance of a reaction due to cross-contact between peanut and tree nuts during the manufacturing process will be lowered if you avoid them altogether.
  • Ice cream served in ice cream parlors should be avoided; cross-contact occurs frequently because of shared scoops.
  • Sometimes, foods that are supposed to contain almonds or other tree nuts contain peanuts instead.
  • Peanuts go by many names, such as ground nuts, beer nuts, or monkey nuts. Use caution if you are unsure!
  • Studies show that most allergic individuals can safely eat peanut oil (not cold pressed, expelled, or extruded peanut oil - sometimes represented as gourmet oils). If you are allergic to peanuts, ask your doctor whether or not you should avoid peanut oil.
  • Younger siblings of children allergic to peanuts may be at increased risk for allergy to peanuts. Your doctor can provide guidance about testing for siblings.
  • Peanuts can be found in many foods and candies, especially chocolate candy. Check all labels carefully. Contact the manufacturer if you have questions.
  • Peanuts can cause severe allergic reactions. If prescribed, carry epinephrine at all times. Learn more about anaphylaxis.
  • Some companies use peanut hulls in compost, which can be added as top-dressing on lawns. Before you hire a contractor, inquire about the use of peanut hulls in compost so that you can make an informed decision.
Commonly Asked Questions

Can peanut allergy be outgrown?

Although once considered to be a lifelong allergy, recent studies indicate that up to 20% of children diagnosed with peanut allergy outgrow it.
Can alternative nut butters (i.e., cashew nut butter) be substituted for peanut butter?
Many nut butters are produced on equipment used to process peanut butter, therefore making it somewhat of a risky alternative. Additionally, many experts recommend peanut-allergic patients avoid tree nuts as well.

Sowbagyavathy VR, Greetings.

In the olden days, I heard in the 50s and early 60s a middle aged couple was 'contracted' during weddings to explain 'manmadhak kalai' to groom and bride. One girl did not know about this 'manmadhak kalai' before wedding. During the nuptials night, allegedly when the guy( This guy from my street) approached her, rather with a bit of determination, she panicked and demanded out. This guy let her go too... it ended up in seperation and divorce. My wife before wedding was scared and was watching her periods.... she thought she would fall pregnant just by kissing! Her cousin said that to me. We had her sweating for 2 months! ( Between engagement and wedding).

Cheers!

Nuts are no doubt rich in fiber besides known as antioxidants and has
also good amount of protein and Vitamin E. Nuts do have high
calories and fat which we read in books. But, one has to restrain from
overeating them. But nut can definitely be a part of healthy diet.

I do not know how much radium is present in a typical kilo of brazil nuts, but I know that years ago an experiment was done using humans and a short lived radium isotope. It was found that 20 % of the radium in a simulated glow in the dark paint for clocks was absorbed by the human digestive system. I suspect that the percentage of radium which is absorbed from a meal of nuts might be higher, please could you share with the world the information source you used on radium in humans to write the blog entry.By the way aflatoxins are real nasties, they normally are formed by fungi growing on nuts like peanuts. These disagreeable substances tend to form epoxides which can then bind to DNA. I suspect that several binding processes allow the aflatoxins to grab hold of DNA

  • Despite the possible health benefits of the nut, the European Union has imposed strict regulations on the import from Brazil of Brazil nuts in their shells, as the shells have been found to contain high levels of aflatoxins, which can lead to liver cancer.[20]
Brazil nuts contain small amounts of radium. Although the amount of radium, a radioactive element, is very small, about 1–7 pCi/g (40–260 Bq/kg), and most of it is not retained by the body, this is 1,000 times higher than in other foods. According to Oak Ridge Associated Universities, this is not because of elevated levels of radium in the soil, but due to “the very extensive root system of the tree.”[21]

I refer to Wikipedia for my information. The passage I used is quoted above.

I have just checked and the ALI (yearly intake limit) in the US for radium-226 for oral exposure is 2 microcuries per year (NRC: 10 CFR Part 20 - Appendix B - Radionuclide Table - Radium-226), if we assume that all the radium in the nut is Ra-226 then some calculations can be done.
If we assume that the ALI is for a yearly occupational dose of 20 mSv (radiation worker limt) then as you are a member of the general public your limit should be 20 times lower at 1 mSv. So I would set your radium limit at 100 nanocuries per year. This means that you could reach this 100 nCi limit after eating about 14 kilos of the nuts.
It is noteworthy that the ALI for radium and other alpha emitters is (and is rightly) very small. The oral ALI for strontium-90 is 30 microcuries while for cesium-137 (one the main medium to long lived radioisotope released at Fukushima) the ALI is 100 microcuries per year.

Reading your reply carefully, I undestand that it is safe to consume upto 14 kilos of the Brazil nuts per year.
That is quite a lot for a nut of dubious safety. Best thing is stay off it when in doubt. Thank you for your very valuable input!
