Getting the animal out is the most important thing in any psycho therapy. The psychologists and psychatrists have these long sessions with patients to bring out those demons from the depth of their minds so that those patients can face those demons, getting the help from counselling and from medications while facing those demons. Even mental health nurses conduct such conversations, some of the questions may seem so offensive; I ask those questions with a straight face and the patients sincerly answer me too.
Cheers!
Dear Raghyji,
Yes! Bring out the animal..face it and try to fight it.
Very important fact.
To treat any situation we need to acknowledge the existence of a problem.
Suppression isn't going to cure anyone of any ills in the world.
Each one of us have drawbacks and inner demons lurking in inner self.
After all even religion teaches us to conquer the inner enemies.
But the problem is....no one is willing to admit flaws in themselves partly becos they will be viewed negatively.
Today I attended a medical conference on communicable and notifiable diseases and it was stressed to us doctors that all cases of Sexually Transmitted Disease(STD)has to be notified to the Public Health Department(Government) and the health inspector would give the person with the STD a call to trace his sexual contacts and get everyone treated.
So some doctors were saying that patients might get angry that such personal data is divulged to government.
So the State Health Director told us that the health inspector will call the person concerned and try to keep things confidential.
I was the only doctor who stood up and asked "what if when the health inspector calls and the spouse of the person with the STD lifts the phone?
Are your health inspectors trained not to blurt out to spouses till situation is under control and only then counselling of spouses done later"
The lady doctors near me started saying "what does it matter if the spouse finds out from the health inspector blurts out..let the unfaithful husband get a proper blasting from his wife"
I said 'No..not so fast it could break up a marriage and kids might suffer..treat the person till he is cured and then call the spouse for counselling and a check up and treat him/her if infected.
Give the person a chance to repent of change his/her sexual habits and he/she might be having sexual addiction which led to the STD in the first place or there could be an underlying marital discord..so do not jump the gun till this is fully investigated"
The female docs with me seemed surprised with what I said and they were all assuming that a unfaithful spouse is always invariably a male.
Anyway the State Health Director did make a note to make sure the health inspectors who call up the patients ask the identity of the person they are talking too and also will advise them to ask if it is appropriate time to investigate(making sure no spouse is near when the call is answered)
I was thinking..even doctors do NOT want to face the problems in a person.
A person with STD is viewed negatively and judged harshly.
Judging won't stop anything..being considerate might make a change.
