Is it so difficult to kill a mocking bird???

  • [h=3]Seven facts about 'To Kill a Mockingbird' author Harper Lee[/h] Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird" became one of the most beloved books in U.S. literary history. Here are seven facts about Lee, who died at the age of 89: * She went by Harper, her middle name, because she was afraid her first name, Nelle, would be mispronounced as "Nellie," not "Nell." * Lee based the "To Kill a Mockingbird" character Dill on childhood friend Truman Capote, who in turn used her as the basis for a character in his "Other Voices, Other Rooms." * "To Kill a Mockingbird," published in 1960, won the Pulitzer Prize the following year, but Conrad Richter's "The Waters of Kronos" beat her out for the National Book Award. * Lee's fans were stunned to learn 55 years after publication of the novel of a long-stashed manuscript written before "To Kill a Mockingbird" and even more stunned that Atticus, the hero of the first book, was portrayed as a segregationist in "Go Set a Watchman." Atticus was based on Lee's father.

[h=3]Freedom of speech must have Lakshman rekha: BJP[/h] The BJP on Friday maintained that “there has to be a Lakshman rekha” for freedom of speech. The JNU row, which many expected would give the ruling party a political upper hand over the Opposition Congress and Left, took a different turn after some news channels indicated that the videos in which JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar was seen raising anti-India slogans were doctored. Party national secretary Shrikant Sharma said the video clipping circulated and exhibited by BJP spokespersons was broadcast by various news channels.

[h=3]Yahoo Movies Review: Neerja[/h] Ram Madhvani’s ‘Neerja’ is nuanced, compelling and sincere. Madhvani ensures that the narrative moves seamlessly – the edits seem precise as we witness the mayhem aboard the hijacked flight on one hand and as we see her family try to cope with fear of their only daughter’s plight on the other. Madhvani knows exactly how much to entrust to which actor – while Sonam Kapoor is the star of the film, it is Shabana Azmi’s part that tugs at your heartstrings.

[h=3]Surgeons set straight spine of African girl[/h]Chennai, Feb 24 (IANS) A 10-year-old girl flew in from Djibouti with a deformed spine that restricted her height to 123 cms. No! This is not any cosmetic surgery or a magical cure! The dramatic change came about due to the efforts of a multi-disciplinary team of medical professionals - surgeons, paediatricians, cardiac specialists, anesthesiasts and others - at the Mumbai-based Sir H.N. Reliance Foundation Hospital and Research Centre who set straight the girl's life-threatening curved spine. Three weeks back, the bright fifth grade student (name not disclosed) from Djibouti - a country in the Horn of Africa - came to the spine clinic at Reliance Foundation.

  • Rise above politics, treat students as students: Kahhaiya Kumar’s mother

Kanhaiya is innocent and represents youth power. Main kanoon nahi samajhti hoon par ek baat jarur jaanti hoon, ki mera beta Bharat ka lal hai (I do not understand law but I do know that my son is the son of India).” This is JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar’s mother Meena Devi’s appeal to PM Narendra Modi. Standing at the entrance of her mud-and-tile house here, Meena Devi, an anganwadi worker, says she can wait a few more days for Kanhaiya’s bail, but she cannot “bear the pain of a sedition case” against him.

[h=3]Bird brain? Dodos were not so dumb after all[/h]By Will Dunham WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The dodo is an extinct flightless bird whose name has become synonymous with stupidity. Scientists said on Wednesday they figured out the dodo's brain size and structure based on an analysis of a well-preserved skull from a museum collection. The research suggests the dodo, rather than being stupid, boasted at least the same intelligence as its fellow members of the pigeon and dove family.

153. Dodo

The DODO was a flightless bird endemic to the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius. Closely related to pigeons and doves, it was three feet tall and weighed about 20 kilograms. It lived on fruits and nested on the ground.

The dodo has been extinct since the 17th century. Its extinction occurred during recorded human history, and was directly caused by the human activity.

The popular phrase is “as dead as a dodo”. The verb phrase “to go the way of the dodo” means to become extinct or obsolete, to fall out of common usage or practice, or to become a thing of the past.

The dodo was not only dumb but also daring! It was entirely fearless of man. This, in addition to its inability to fly, made it easy prey. Reports say that the dodo meat had a bad taste and was tough to eat. Apparently the bird was killed only to make head dressings used in religious ceremonies.

However, when humans first arrived on Mauritius, they also brought with them other animals that had not existed on the island before, such as dogs, pigs, cats and rats The Crab-eating Macaques plundered the dodo nests, while humans destroyed the forests where the birds made their homes. The damages caused by the pigs and macaques on the dodo population are considered to have been more severe than that of hunting.

The 2005 expedition’s finds are apparently of animals killed by a flash flood; such mass mortalities would have further jeopardized an already extinction-prone species. Although there are scattered reports of mass killings of dodos for provisioning of ships, archaeological investigations have hitherto found scant evidence of human predation on these birds.

It is rightly said that fools rush in where angels fear to tread! The “Dumbness and dare-devilry” of the dodo was a doomed, dangerous and deadly combination—no doubt!

[h=3]Classical Indian dance helps trafficking victims to heal, study shows[/h]By Rina Chandran MUMBAI (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Classical Indian dance could be an effective form of therapy for victims of human trafficking and sexual violence, helping them to overcome their traumatic experiences and gain confidence, a pilot study has shown. The six-month study of 50 female survivors in Kolkata and Mumbai found that dance movement therapy helped ease anxiety, depression, anger and post-traumatic stress when used alongside traditional counselling and other rehabilitation efforts. "Often, in the rehabilitation of victims of trafficking and sexual violence, the impact on the body can be overlooked," said Sohini Chakraborty, the founder and director of Kolkata Sanved, a charity which carried out the research.
