The case of Caster Semenya reeks traces of sexism and racism. She is a South African athlete who was made to undergo external and internal genitalia test to verify her gender. Hours before she won a race in Berlin, her test results were leaked. Even though she had a vagina, she didn’t have ovaries or uterus. This made her state “I have been subjected to unwarranted and invasive scrutiny of the most intimate and private details of my being. This infringed not only my rights as an athlete but also my fundamental and human rights including my rights to dignity and privacy.” After government’s support, she was allowed to participate in Rio Olympics 2016

Dutee Chand is an Indian athlete who won a gory war against IAAF for deeming her illegible to compete as a woman. Even though the rules of gender testing changed after the case of Caster Semenya and only testosterone levels were supposed to be checked through a blood test, Dutee Chand was made to get an ultrasound, MRI, chromosome analysis and physical examination. Due to her victory against such discrimination, she was allowed to participate in 100 meter race at Rio Olympics.

Maria Jose Martinez –Patino wasn’t allowed to compete for Seoul Olympics in 1988 after she was made to undergo the chromosome test in 1986. The test result revealed that she had Y chromosome but with a complete androgen insensitivity syndrome, meaning her body doesn’t respond to testosterone. In 2005, for an interview for medical journal The Lancet, Martinez-Patino said:

“I felt ashamed and embarrassed. I lost friends, my fiancé, hope, and energy. But I knew that I was a woman, and that my genetic difference gave me no unfair physical advantage. I could hardly pretend to be a man; I have breasts and a vagina. I never cheated.”

DOES THIS explain why most of us women stay away from the
high profile games laced with dirty politics and public insults???
