[h=3]Demonetisation: Deadline to deposit junked notes ends today[/h]The 50-day deadline to deposit the old Rs 500/1,000 notes in banks comes to an end tomorrow but the cash crunch and queues before ATMs are likely to continue for some more time as currency printing presses have failed to meet the huge demand for new bills. People, however, will still have time to exchange the currency notes at designated RBI counters till March 31 after giving valid reasons for not depositing defunct notes in their accounts by December 30. The government is also planning to come out with an Ordinance making possession of old Rs 500/1,000 notes beyond a specified limit for numismatic purposes illegal and punishable. Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a surprise announcement on November 8 declared the old Rs 500 and 1,000 notes invalid.

[h=3]This Mumbai Lady Raised Rs 25 Lakhs for Her Driver’s Son to Get a Heart Transplant[/h]Meena Sriram, a resident of Mumbai, helped raise Rs. 25 lakh to pay for multiple surgeries for her driver's son who was born with holes in his heart. Aditya Shinde, the six-year-old boy, needed two open-heart surgeries and one heart transplant. Meena's driver Rupesh Shinde had been despondent trying to get his son the treatment he needed. He notes that Aditya used to ask him if he would ever walk again. But even when a heart was made available for the transplant after waiting for seven months, Rupesh realised that the cost of the surgeries would lead to a crushing debt. This was when his employer took charge and raised necessary funds within the week. Meena, who is a financier, also helped Rupesh travel to Chennai for the surgeries. Meena told The Times of India that the money came rolling in once people found out about the cause. She added that everyone was far more generous than expected and it only took two days for them to hit the target. Image for representation. A person in my office earning only Rs 25,000 gave a check of Rs 5,000. Giving is important as it can save so many lives," she said. Despite complications, the procedures were successful. And today, Aditya is walking again. Like this story? Or have something to share? Write to us: [email protected], or connect with us on Facebook and Twitter. [h=3]Gutsy Woman Tracks down Her Online Abuser, Makes Him Pay Rs 25,000 to Charity[/h]Sreelakshmi Satheesh, the CEO of an educational set-up based out of Kerala, woke up to every woman's nightmare when she started getting incessant phone calls from strange men asking her for her "rates". A quick investigation gave her the answer that one of her acquaintances had posted her number on a WhatsApp group and had called her an "item". Once she reached the bottom of the matter, she tracked down the perpetrator and made him pay Rs. 25,000 to a charity of her choice. Sreelakshmi recounted her tale in a now-viral Facebook post written in Malayalam. She wrote that she was shocked and sickened after receiving multiple calls from unknown numbers of men soliciting her services. They all thought she was a prostitute. Photo source: Facebook She finally took matters in her hands and called one of the men asking him the truth about how her number had been disseminated so widely. Her disgust was further exasperated when she found out that not only was the original perpetrator someone she knew personally, but he was also a well-respected member of a political party. While she wanted to go to the police and file a complaint, his elderly father and the party officials dissuaded her from doing so. She also wrote that she was a little apprehensive about filing a case because the man in question is a politician and she was concerned about her safety. So Sreelakshmi came up with another solution -- she had the political party throw the man out of his job and also made him pay a sum of Rs 25,000 to a charity. He had to give her a receipt as proof. Photo source: Facebook Her post has been shared over 1,000 times on Facebook and many women and girls are seeking her advice on handling online abuse. But one thing is for certain -- nearly everyone is commending this woman for showing grace while under fire. Like this story? Or have something to share? [h=3]Chinese Man Used Hand Grenade as a Nutcracker for 25 Years[/h]A villager in China unknowingly used a hand grenade to crack walnuts for a quarter century, only realizing his potentially fatal mistake when he spotted the grenade on a government flyer. The man, whose surname is Ran and who lives in Shaanxi province, claimed that a friend gave him the grenade in the early 1980s. Not having any idea what it was, he used it to crack open walnuts. The nutcracker in this case was a Chinese Type 67 defensive hand grenade. The grenade is a so-called "stick" grenade, also known as a "potato masher." Invented by the German Army in World War I, stick grenades contain an explosive charge in one end of the weapon. A pull string runs through the length of the handle and

Are not we having troubles with the existing cow-sized-cows and elephant-sized-elephants already???

Science
[h=3]Scientists are attempting to bring back an ancient elephant-sized cow[/h]Scientists are close to bringing back a huge ancient cattle species called an auroch. Aurochs roamed Europe for thousands of years until the last of their kind died in the Jaktorow Forest in Poland in 1627. They were 7 ft tall and weighed around 1,000kg. Since 2009, European science teams have been breeding cattle which still carry auroch DNA. Two programmes are attempting to revive a version of the auroch through breeding. One is Operation Taurus, which has selectively bred 300 calves with auroch DNA via a process called back-breeding. They select breeds of cattle which have certain auroch characteristics and each generation of calves gets closer to the original auroch in appearance, behaviour

[h=3]Police: Whale Spotted in New York City's East River[/h]Officers patrolling New York City's harbor in a police boat have spotted a whale in the East River. The New York Police Department's special operations division posted a photo of the unusual tourist on its Twitter account Saturday morning. The whale was seen swimming along the shores of Manhattan's upper East Side, close to Gracie Mansion, where the mayor lives. U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Frank Iannazzo-Simmons says officials from his office haven't seen the whale. But he says based on the photos it appears to be a humpback whale. Snaps from the scene show the woman being whisked away by rescuers, as the croc ambles away through the brush.
