[h=3]June 30 will be a second longer: Scientists explain why[/h]On June 30, the day will officially be a bit longer than usual because an extra second or "leap" second will be added and NASA has an explanation for this. "The Earth's rotation is gradually slowing down a bit, so leap seconds are a way to account for that," said Daniel MacMillan, NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. This is the case according to the time standard that people use in their daily lives - Coordinated Universal Time or UTC. UTC is "atomic time" -- the duration of one second is based on extremely predictable electromagnetic transitions in atoms of cesium.

Ecstasy for the sake of a black hole? :rapture:

A nearby black hole just erupted for the first time in 26 years and scientists are ecstatic

Lurking 8,000 light years from Earth is a black hole 12 times more massive than our sun. Now, scientists around the world are using highly sophisticated instruments to learn as much as they can about this mysterious beast of nature before the black hole returns to its slumber, which will be soon. Black holes are very dense, massive objects in space that have an immensely powerful gravitational field that traps anything and everything that comes too close, including light.

[h=3]2 Air India staff suspended after pilgrims were served non-veg food[/h]If populism and unionism weren't enough to dent Air India's credibility among flyers, the careless and callous staff surely promise its hasty grounding as its customer satisfaction report card took another hit on Saturday. Tempers frayed onboard Leh-Delhi flight on Saturday afternoon when meat was served to some Jain pilgrims returning from Sindhu Darshan festival. The immediate staff suspension was urgent to stop the bad news from going out of airport as the fuming pilgrims landed in Capital.

According to a new survey out from Staples (SPLS) Advantage (yes, that Staples), it was actually women who were looking to move for hard-charging, type-A reasons.

Living through three different centuries??? :faint:

[h=3]A world apart: 2 women with birthdates in 1800s still alive[/h]When Susannah Mushatt Jones and Emma Morano were born in 1899, there was not yet world war or penicillin, and electricity was still considered a marvel. Jones, who lives in New York, currently tops a list of supercentenarians, or people who have lived past 110, which is maintained by Los Angeles-based Gerontology Research Group. Morano, of Verbania, Italy, is just a few months younger than Jones and is Europe's oldest person, according to the group.

Is X-ray, CT scan radiation really putting you at risk of cancer?

Washington DC, 1 July (ANI): While in recent years studies claiming that radiation from X-rays, CT scans and other medical imaging cause cancer have been widely covered, it turns out that such studies have some serious flaws. According to a recent article by Dr. James Welsh and Dr. Jeffry Siegel, although radiation is known to cause cancer at high doses and high-dose rates, no data have ever unequivocally demonstrated the induction of cancer following exposure to low doses and dose rates. Studies that have found a cancer link to medical imaging typically employ a model called "linear no-threshold" (LNT).

Isn't dying under pressure worse than cracking under pressure??? :decision:

[h=3]“I will die rather than crack under pressure”: SRK[/h]As someone who considers fame a blessing, Shah Rukh Khan says he works best with the pressure that comes with his stardom. “I feel when there is no pressure, life is lazy. When you try new things you are going to fail… when you are going to fail you feel bad… but you have to keep trying and not crack under pressure,” Shah Rukh said, reports PTI. When asked about an actor who does not crack under pressure, SRK took comedian Johnny Lever’s name.
