[h=3]No intention to surround India in 'string of pearl' bases: China[/h]Shanghai, July 3 (IANS) It's not possible for China to surround India in a 'string of pearls' bases as has been stated by some commentators, according to a top PLA naval official. Senior Captain Wei Xiao Dong, chief of staff at the Shanghai Naval Garrison said that there was no reason for India to "show concern or worry about" Chinese navy vessels, including submarines, visiting countries like Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh or others. "China does not have a policy of hegemony or is playing to be a military power in the region," Wei told a group of visiting Indian journalists.

Encouraging people to ignore real people around them

and get hooked to mobile phones???:mobile:

[h=3]One mobile number across India, free roaming next?[/h]Beginning Friday, you will be able to retain your mobile number even if you move “permanently” to another state, a move which experts and industry executives claim will eventually lead to a roaming-free India. It will also end the hoarding of numbers, and reduce the pressure on the government to issue new ones,” said Sanjay Kapoor, former CEO of Bharti Airtel, and current chairman, Micromax. Operators have traditionally resisted moves by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India and the government which could lead to a reduction in rates for users. If two big operators jump in, One India rate could happen sooner than latter,” said Romal Shetty national head, telecom, consulting firm KPMG.

It is cruel to put the dogs with highly specialized training to sleep once they retire! :nono:

[h=3]Retired military dogs find new purpose in US meth wars[/h]Five retired military dogs that spent years working in war zones are putting their noses to new uses by helping police in the U.S. combat methamphetamine and other drugs. The dogs are being deployed to departments in Indiana, Texas, Tennessee, Nebraska and Georgia as part of a venture that organizers say gives police a resource they couldn't otherwise afford and provides the dogs a new mission. "If you were to look at these dogs and watch them, when they come back, they're ready to work," said Mike Thomas, a Harris County, Texas, sheriff's officer and board member for the Houston-based organization K9s4Cops, which is using a $25,000 grant from Westport Pharmaceuticals in St. Louis to acquire the dogs and train them to work with their new handlers.

For serving the nation so very well!!!

[h=3]MPs to seek 100% pay hike, health benefits to married children[/h]In 1991, then president R Venkataraman refused assent to a Bill passed unanimously by both Houses of Parliament to increase pension of former members of parliament (MPs). Venkataraman had found it repugnant that the MPs were pushing for all pension benefits to even those of them who had served for a month. "But subsequently amendments were made to ensure that all pension benefits will accrue to an ex-MP even if they had served a day," constitutional expert Subhash C Kashyap said. The former secretary-general of the Lok Sabha had argued against the hike, something that Venkataraman heeded.

[h=3]Diabetes drug may help obese people lose fat[/h]New York, July 5 (IANS) A drug originally meant for diabetics may help obese individuals without diabetes shed weight and also keep it off, suggests a research. A little more than one year of treatment with the drug named Liraglutide was found to reduce at least five percent of body weight in over 60 percent of study participants. It seems to be as good as any of the others on the market, so it adds another possibility for doctors to treat patients who are having trouble either losing weight or maintaining weight loss once they get the weight off," Xavier Pi-Sunyer, professor of medicine at the Columbia University Medical Center in New York City was quoted as saying by Live Science.
