[h=3]Just like that, Viru Sehwag was gone[/h]Only a handful of fans had taken their seats on this chilly, smoggy Thursday morning when the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) conducted a felicitation function for the recently retired Virender Sehwag, who would fill up stadiums around the world when he batted in his pomp. During this shabbily organized event half-an-hour before the start of the fourth Test match at Feroz Shah Kotla, a stadium Sehwag called home for an overwhelming majority of his career, you could count more people on the ground - players and support staff from India and South Africa, BCCI and DDCA officials, photojournalist and broadcasting crew, Sehwag’s family and the man himself — than in the stands. On the big screen, a video montage of his best innings entertained vacant spaces as Sehwag collected his memento from Anurag Thakur and made a brief speech before shaking hands with members of both teams.

India major contributor to global warming: Maneka Gandhi

AT A time when India has taken a firm stand at the Paris climate summit that developed nations cannot expect a still developing India to shoulder the burden of reducing emissions, Union Woman and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi has said that India, as one of the main contributors to the global warming, needs to do much more. Blaming the Chennai floods on climate change, Maneka, known for her environmental activism, told NDTV in an interview that the fact that “historically the polluters have been the West doesn’t absolve India from the fact that it is today one of the major polluters”. India is one of the main players destroying the climate.

[h=3]Won't accept 'anti-people' GST Bill: Congress[/h]New Delhi, Dec.5 (ANI): Reiterating their stand on the Goods and Services Tax (GST), the Congress Party on Saturday said that they would not accept the 'anti-people' Bill as proposed by the BJP-led NDA Government. "Our leader Rahul Gandhi has made it very clear that we are not going to accept GST which is anti-people, anti-traders and anti-common man," Congress leader Pramod Tiwari told ANI. A key government committee, headed by Chief Economic Advisory (CEA) Arvind Subramanian, has suggested a standard GST rate of 17-18 percent, increasing chances of a consensus on the key reform so that the constitutional amendment that it entails can get passed in the current winter session as the clock ticks down to the April 1 deadline.

[h=3]In 2015, voters send out distress signals: Is BJP listening?[/h]As the year draws to a close, it may be useful to assess the BJP's poll performance in elections that were unconnected and held at different intervals throughout the year. State elections in Delhi, Bihar, local elections in Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, a Lok Sabha by-election in Madhya Pradesh and the latest municipal and panchayat polls in Gujarat saw adverse results for the ruling party. In Gujarat and Rajasthan, the opposition Congress was blanked out by the BJP.

[h=3]To check pollution, Delhi govt announces curbs on plying of private vehicles[/h]In the first major green intervention by the executive which could become a template for other cities in the country, the Delhi government announced Friday a slew of measures starting January 1 to bring down pollution levels in the Capital. The radical steps, which include restrictions on plying of vehicles, shutting down of power plants, vacuum-cleaning of roads and not allowing vehicle parking on PWD roads, were made public a day after the Delhi High Court, commenting on the city’s poor air quality, said “it seems like we are living in a gas chamber”. At a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, the government decided to impose curbs on operation of vehicles on Delhi roads based on odd and even registration number plates.

Forget 'smart' new cities; India needs old ones to be less dumb

By Douglas Busvine and Abhiram Nandakumar NEW DELHI/BENGALURU, India (Reuters) - Prime Minister Narendra Modi has grand designs to build 100 futuristic 'smart' cities in India, but as this week's devastating flooding in Chennai shows, fixing today's accident-prone metropolises appears to be the more pressing task. Locals are in no doubt as to why a mix of flood waters and sewage is swilling neck-deep around parts of the southern city of 6 million people after weeks of monsoon rains culminated in a 345 mm (14-inch) cloudburst in 24 hours. Similar floods struck Mumbai in 2005 and Kashmir's summer capital, Srinagar, last year.

[h=3]India's spin doctors face flak over 'doctored' Modi image[/h]India's government has faced mockery on social media for tweeting an apparently doctored photo of its image-conscious prime minister surveying the flood-hit southern state of Tamil Nadu. Narendra Modi tweeted an image of himself looking out of a helicopter window as he flew over the area on Thursday, saying he was "pained by the devastation" he had seen. "Very silly of @PIB-India to photo-shop @PMOIndia aerial survey of Chennai," tweeted Prashanth Rao, referring to the state capital.

[h=3]Private practitioners may face action for not reporting TB cases[/h]Three years after it issued an order making TB a notifiable disease, and despite a much-hyped webportal Nikshay to facilitate TB notification, government of India is looking to take action against private sector players for not reporting TB cases. In 2014, India had an estimated 2.2 million (22 lakh) new TB cases. Much as the health ministry is reluctant to incorporate penal provisions against private practitioners for not reporting TB cases, senior officials in the ministry of health and family welfare, speaking at the 46th Union World Conference on Lung Health, did not rule out action under IPC or other state acts like the Bombay Nursing Act to ensure compliance.

[h=3]Modi mocked and Jayalalithaa heckled after floods[/h]By Sanjeev Miglani CHENNAI, India (Reuters) - One of India's most powerful politicians, a former movie star called "Amma" or "Mother" by her followers, is being heckled and abused for going missing in action after floods swept the capital of Tamil Nadu, which she rules. It's a salutary lesson for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who at first drew nods of approval when he rushed to Chennai last week, promising to stand by its people in their hour of need. For both him and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa Jayaram, the image of strong leadership created by their publicity machines was undermined.
