WOW! In a page full of radar guns

I found these little penguins!!! :)

When Ram was in MGH, Boston, the temperature was taken every hour. :yo: to the new invention.

The nurse just rubs it on the forehead and notes the temperature! :thumb:

Both mercury type bp monitor and clinical thermometer are used here. Atleat, bp monitor.

Infrared thermometers are available for Rs 5000 from ebay. Thanks for the picture and make.

I have not (any doctor for that matter) measured my body temperature in the last 15 years. I bought one toshiba electronic thermometer in 1985; it is still working.

Mercury is banned in most of the countries; the mercury thermometer factory of hindustan lever in kodaikanal was closed in 2001. Claims for compensation for mercury poisoning are still alive.

Dear Sarang ji,

Mercurial glass thermometers also pose a hygiene problem cos some doctors soak it after use in a container filled with disinfectant and the disinfectant is only changed the next day...imagine the thermometer goes into so many people's mouth and then soaked one whole day in the same disinfectant liquid..I am pretty sure the bacterial count will be high cos the saliva might be more than what the disinfectant liquid can handle.

So it is better to use the infra red thermoscan types..more hygenic.

Dear RR ji,

When I was an intern I had a torch light like one in the pic..it was shaped like a car set in a key ring and we can switch on the lights of the car and it can be used to check patients.

ch-toy-sports-car-key-ring-no-batteries--426-p.jpg

My consultant was an old order type of doctor..he got mad to see this type of torch!
He said its totally unprofessional!LOL

But the patients loved it..some(adults) would even say "wow nice torchlight....can I look at it for while" and many would want to be checked by this.

In fact once a patient told the consultant that why don't you also get a car torch like your intern?

That was it! The consultant got real mad and banned me from using the car torch.

My consultant was old order types and I was some Vasool Raja MBBS types!

My consultant would be very strict with his patients and he would view transexual patients with disgust.
He would be scolding them for cross dressing and asked them to be proper males where else I would be asking them where they got their outfits and even shared beauty tips with them.

He was very much like the character of Prakash Raj in Vasool Raja MBBS.

My father used to wear a reflecting spherical mirror in his forehead
and use the reflect light to check on the patients.
The would be a small hole in the center of the mirror.
I am not sure whether it was the peep hole!

The friend who skidded on loose soil and fell on the road is
back home now...minus Rs 40 K and plus a lot of worries reg payment,
since now he is on an enforced vacation for 2 months.
This is just to pay for the treatment of cuts, scratches and bruises
what would have been the expense if he had needed a surgery??? :faint:

Concave mirrors are used by doctors to focus light into ears, throat etc..

So, dad used it for checking the ears and the throats of his patients.
I don't think any doctor peeps through that hole!
:peep:

The light from the source will pass through the peep hole
and disturb the vision of the doctor.
SO he must be focusing the light from the source
on the part of the body to be examined
and then look at it directly from below the mirror.
So the central hole was there - whether it was used to peep through or not.

The mirror looks adjustable so that it can be worn on the forehead
and tilted to get the focused light on to the area to be examined.
The mirror looks upside down though, in the Google image!

The mirror came to my mind since I was thinking of the shiro-ratna of Aswaththaamaa.
He had a gem on his forehead which would protect the wearer from
the fear of snakes, ghosts, demi-gods and demons.
So Ashwatthama was asked to surrender this gem after he had killed the sleeping Upa paanadavaas
(the sons of Paandavaas) stealthily at night, after watching an owl kill crows treacherously at night.

Chiranjivis or Chiranjeevis (Sanskrit nominative sing. ciranjīvī, चिरंजीवी) are permanent lived beings in Hinduism who are to remain alive through this Kali Yuga until the next Satya Yuga.

Puranas, the Mahabharata and the Ramayana describe seven long lived personalities in the Hindu pantheon. They existed in past ages, Satya Yuga, Treta Yuga, and Dvapara Yuga, and are alive today in our current Kali Yuga.

Each represents a different attribute of man, which as long as they live, will exist amongst humanity.

The chiranjivi are as follows:

  • Ashwatthama, the son of Drona, a great warrior. He acted out of cowardice to avenge the killing of his father, resulting in a curse of immortality.
  • Bali Chakravarthi, granted a boon by Vishnu that he would be the next Indra, before merging with Vishnu. He expounds virtues of valour and charity.
  • Hanuman, avatar of Shiva, who served Rama. He stands for selflessness, courage, devotion, strength, and righteous conduct.
  • Kripa, military guru of the princes in the Mahabharata.
  • Parashurama, 6th avatar of Vishnu, master of all astras, sastras and divine weapons. The Kalki Purana writes that he will re emerge at end time to the martial guru of Kalki. He will then instruct the final avatar to undertake penance to receive celestial weaponry, required to save mankind at end time.
  • Vibhishana, brother of Ravana. Vibhishana surrendered to Rama before his battle with Ravana. Later, he was crowned king of Lanka after Ravana was killed by Rama. He stands for righteousness. Vibhishana is not a true Chiranjeevi, as his boon of longevity is to remain on the earth only until the end of Treta Yuga.
  • Vyasa, a sage who narrated the Mahabharata. He represents erudition and wisdom.
Hindu scripture contains a mantra about the seven immortals, in which their names are recited for luck and longevity:
Ashwathaama Balir Vyaso Hanumanashcha Vibhishana Krupacharya
cha Parashuramam Saptaita Chiranjeevanam

Dear VR ji,

I wonder why all those Chiranjeevis are males??

Why no females??

But sadly Aswaththaama was made into a chiranjeevi - just to

suffer pains and diseases and get punished until the end of

kaliyuga!

Lord Krishna then placed a curse on Ashwatthama(actually it was his Prarabdha karma) that "he will carry the burden of all people's sins on his shoulders and will roam alone like a ghost without getting any love and courtesy till the end of Kaliyuga;[SUP]

[/SUP] He will have neither any hospitality nor any accommodation; He will be in total isolation from mankind and society; His body will suffer from a host of incurable diseases forming sores and ulcers that would never heal".

Ashwatthama had a gem which was similar to
Shamantakamani on his forehead which used to protect the wearer from fear of any snakes, ghosts, demigods and demons. So, Ashwatthama was asked to surrender this gem.

Lord Sri Krishna further states that "the wound caused by the removal of this gem on his forehead will never heal and will suffer from
leprosy, till the end of Kaliyuga". It is believed that in Kaliyuga, his name will be "Suryakanta".

Thus, Ashwatthama will be in search of death every moment, and yet he will never die. At the end of
Kali Yuga, Ashwatthama is to meet Sri Kalki, the tenth and final avatar of Lord Vishnu.

What a horrible chiranjeevithvam!!! :scared:

What a cruel a punishment to be given a human being...

making him beg, plead and crave for death

- in order to put an end to his sufferings -

and putting death JUST out of his reach!!!
