Yes Prof. Sir! Mahathi is Dr. B M K's creation.

And you know that the first rAgam in 'athisaya rAgam' song is set to Mahathi.

S G3 P N2 S' - S' N2 P G3 S are the ArOhaNam and avarOhaNam resply.

We can say that Mahathi = Valaji - D2. Hence these rAgams have some resemblance too!! :)

The construction of a rAgam has a rule that if one of the ArOhaNam or avarOhaNam have ONLY four swarams

then the other should have at least six swarams. NavarasakannadA is one such with ArOhanam: S G3 M1 P S'

and avarOhaNam S' N2 D2 M1 G3 R2 S. 'NinnuvinA' and 'NAnoru viLaiyAttu bommaiyA' are the popular

keerthanais. So Mahathi rAgam does NOT follow the rule!

Dear Prof. Sir,

This might be a new rAgam.
According to this song, the ArOhaNam and avarOhaNam are like this:

S M1 G3 M2 D1 N3 S'

S' N3 D1 P M2 G3 R1 S

This is a janya rAgam of KAmavardhini with anya swaram M1.

Hence the G M D N S' phrases gives a similarity to KAmavardhini aka PanthuvarALi.

P.S: Heard the song just now (after my vacation) and hence the delay in reply! :)

 
1971.. and all that

1971 tere mere sapne, was a rather an extreme corruption of that a.j.cronin classic, the citadel. nevertheless, the movie, to me atleast, was a delight, to watch my favourite mumtaz blossoming finally into a full fledged heroine.

with the rather playful dev anand, she pulls of a secondary role, into a heartwarming display of wifely duty, ethics, and above all, a motherhood - lost and ultimately recovered.

much unlike the original citadel, where the good doctor pays a price for his deviance. bollywood can never hand over the loss of its heroine, a la the citadel or dr. zhivago.

no matter what, s.d.burman's songs are immortal, and on a rather damp, cold spring (?) evening in far away toronto, from where i saw this movie in 1972, a summery madras, in that eventful year, made the fateful decision, or formed it, into leaving permanently the country of my ancestors and daayaadhees.

so, here's an ode to the past, and eventually, life itself, which has turned out better than i had hoped...a song of wish..for life..enjoy.

Thanks. When I was listening to this song yesterday, my wife mentioned the connection to Ninne Nera Nammi - we (among us) discussed and she taught me a few more nuances.

Here is one more song when we listened, my wife was doubtful whether the third raga was gowlai (how close are gowri and gowla)
