I have seen lots of paranoid women in my life.
My paternal great grand mum used to be paranoid when she was making naivedyam for God.

She would tie up her hair in a towel and she made her own mask for her face and tied it around the mouth so that there is no chance for any saliva to fall into the food.

No one was allowed to talk in the kitchen too.

Till she served the food at the altar she would never remove her face mask.

She was just too worried about giving unclean food to God.

Excessive Cleanliness Causes Allergies

"There is an inverse relationship between the level of hygiene and the incidence of allergies and autoimmune diseases," he said. "The more sterile the environment a child lives in, the higher the risk he or she will develop allergies or an immune problem in their lifetime."

True Renu. From the beginning we should be taught to live with the natural world. If you notice children living in villages and hill areas are stronger than others in town/cities. They are accustomed to the nature and even they wear minimum clothes. In child hood we never wear shirts while we were at home since chennai is always hot.

Dear sir,

I agree with you 100%.This is what I tell my mum all the while cos as a doc I can see the difference between village kids and town kids.
Village kids can still recover with 1st line antibiotics but town kids need 3rd line antibiotics and town kids have higher incidences of resistance to antibiotics.

But sadly my mum disagrees with me and says "Renu we are not cavemen!"

and I will tell her.."no one taught caveman hygiene and we are still surviving as humans till now"

We should live with nature and try not to be too conscious about everything.

Thank you VR Mam for the information. Whether Eating in stainless steel plate for years would harm our health? In one hotel in Kolkatta food is served in plates wherein plantain leave is cut ant prepared as bottom to keep hygine.

Stainless steel neither harms nor helps!

Aluminum was once the metal used by kings along with silver and gold.

It was so scarce and so costly that only kings could afford them.

Aluminum is said to cause failing memory and the other problems associated with this.

I shall verify this statement and write about it a little later.

You know sometimes even if we take all the precautions in food, hygiene etc and we can still get knocked by a speeding lorry when we are on the road.

The best thing is just live without worrying too much and maintain a certain degree of hygiene is enough.

Over hygiene causes allergies.
We also must let the body be exposed to some amount of bacteria to build up a defense.

I remember when I was young my mum used to keep the house spotless mopped with Dettol to make sure there is no bacteria and I ended up growing up with severe allergic rhinitis cos my body was just not used to germs.

Over the years after I left home I had to expose myself to not 100% sterile conditions to build my body defense.

Playing in the mud was a strict No No for my mum.
She would be getting all scared if she saw us playing in mud.

So you see being too clean is not all that safe too.

So do not over do anything.

That's why for me I let my son run and play in mud too if he wants and later I give him a bath.

My mum gets so scared to even let my son use tap water to brush his teeth and gives him boiled cooled water instead which I strongly object.

So just live in moderation and nothing can go wrong.

TOO much protection from germs and bacteria
will deny our body a fair chance to develop immunity
and will do more harm than good in the long run!

Yet in those days dust allergy was unheard of!!!
Here people living in houses with air condition and
traveling by A.C cars develop dust allergy.

Meticulous and dedicated. What today's people will think of her?

Even I would have thought of such a person to be dedicated and full of sincerity. The thought of viewing them as paranoid never
occurred to me. Guess, some people are gifted to describe (and get away) anything they dislike in anyway it suits them

Stainless Steel.

Harry Brearley-a specialist in steel- began doing research in Brown Firth Research Laboratories in 1908. His aim was to find a way to prevent the corrosion in the rifle barrels, due to the heat produced and gas released during firing.

He was trying varying amounts of Chromium mixed with carbon iron to produce the perfect alloy. On August 13, 1913, he mixed 0.24% of carbon and 12.8% of Chromium with steel to create the new alloy now popularly known as Stainless Steel!

So the 13th of August (19)13, doubly unlucky for every one else, turned out to be his luckiest day!

He tested the new alloy with lemon juice and vinegar, the most commonly used liquids in cooking, but it did not react with them in the same way as plain steel would!

So it was decided that the alloy would be ideal to produce kitchenware and cutlery-which do not get tarnished or corroded! The kitchen- ware revolution had begun!

Even the world of architecture has undergone major changes- thanks to the stainless steel! The Gateway Arch at St. Louis is completely coated with stainless steel. The pinnacle of The Chrysler Building is made with this wonderful alloy.

Unisphere in New York, the largest global structure in the world, is made with stainless steel. Patronas Twin Towers and Jin Mao Building-two of the world’s tallest skyscrapers-have their exterior made of stainless steel.

Art deco sculptures use of stainless steel which can withstand the onslaught of Sun, rain, snow and Time!

Modern light weight furniture are made with stainless steel-especially those used near beach areas, since they are strong, sturdy, weather proof and elegant to look at!

Mechanical and machine parts as well as medical equipments are now made out of stainless steel.

Looking around us we are forced to wonder at two things: what will the world be without this alloy and is it really less than a century, since this stainless steel was invented!

Dear Ozone,

I guess my choice of words was wrong..I apologize for that.
Cos I feel it is not right for me to call someone paranoid for certain personal practices.

I was just relating to how things have changed in the scenario since childhood.

I had seen my great grand mum prepare Naivedyam with face mask on and later when I was say some 10 years old..I had seen my parents buy fruits for serving at the altar and if just say any one of us children would say "nice fruits where did you buy them from"..that would be it..my parents would say "you have put nazar on the fruits and now we cant serve them"

So all of us kids would be given a lecture how not to look at any fruits/naivedyam with Nazar vision.

Even when my mum prepares Halwa for prayers and we tell her the ghee smells good..we would be given another lecture!LOL

Then everything changed at home when I turned 14 cos that is when my dog Ugo came into our lives.

When my mum cooked any Halwa as Naivedyam..he would be at the window sniffing in the air and almost trying to break in to smell the ghee.

Then when the Halwa is being carried to the prayer room he would block us from going in till some Halwa Naivedyam is given to him.

Only then he would permit us to enter prayer room and he would insists on attending the bhajan.

My parents used to be in a fix..tradition had thought them that Naivedyam is solely for God and now they were faced with a situation where a dog wants Naivedyam before it was served to God.

All stories of Shiridi Sai Baba and his devotees denying a dog a meal came to their mind where Baba will ask the devotees "when I came to your house why didn't you feed me?"

So that's the day all traditions broke and my dog used to be given Naivedyam first before it was served at the altar.

I am sure if my paternal great grand mum was still alive she would have screamed to see a dog being fed Naivedyam first before it was served at the altar.

I was just recollecting the events that happened.

What you wanted to say was:
a) that she had an obsessive fear of the food being contaminated; and /or
b) that she was an obsessive follower of ritual purity

I meant a). that she had an obsessive fear of the food being contaminated.

I am a believer of God.. so b) would have never been my answer.

I was talking about Obsessiveness of cleanliness..even my early post I had mentioned that excessive cleanliness when I grew up led to lots of allergies... and thats why with my own son I let him play and be exposed to nature as much as possible.

But just to add..she would have never condoned a dog being given the Naivedyam first cos she was concerned about cleanliness and also ritual purity.

I was only commenting on her obsession with cleanliness and not ritual purity.

I have a funny fear! After touching dirty rupee notes (seldom I get brand new ones), I wash my hands with soap.

My doctor brother used to tell me that if infections spread as per my fear, there will not be a single healthy person

on the earth!

In a particular shop, when I get dirty ten rupees as change, I give them back demanding for better ones. And this

invariably ends up in buying more stuff, because the shop owner will swear that he has only those notes! So, my
brother's son makes fun of me saying that the shop owner has reserved those notes for me, to increase his sale!

And we drank well water filtered with ordinary cloth (no micro filter) and often fresh milk without boiling. Our obsession with 100% sterile food and drinks is because of degrading environment, brainwashing and lack of faith in ourselves.

We have chefs in tv programs, who wear a cap to protect the food from falling hair, but taste the cooked food by licking with left hand!

Even today, in temples, people who carry prasadam from the temple kitchen to the sannadi, cover their mouth and nose. All such activities have a physical, ritual and spiritual connotation. It is not wise to discuss them in derogatory or slipshod manner.

That could also be due to her devotion to god.

Money or currency note is a... surface upon which bacteria can live for quite some time. Paper money is often the worst, but even upon coins, bacteria can live for several hours, at least. Most money is touched by hundreds, or thousands, of people, comes in contact with a variety of surfaces, and is porous, allowing bacteria to migrate deep inside the fibers to avoid environmental hazards. Money can host bacteria for several weeks at a time, and if used frequently (like the small denomination bills) can be reinfected over and over again.

Above and beyond all surfaces that bacteria like to live on, human hands are perhaps their favorite.
We use hands to touch everything.... We shake hands, touch money, and cough or sneeze into our hands. Hundreds of varieties of bacteria, ranging from mostly harmless to highly infectious, reside on people's hands all the time.

The most important prevention to the spread of bacteria is to wash your hands. Any soap with warm water, a healthy lather, and vigorous rubbing will suffice; it doesn't help to have an "antibacterial soap" if you don't wash thoroughly enough. In fact, the misuse of antibacterial soap may make these microbes resistant as a result, negating the effects of antibacterial soap altogether.

How Long Do Bacteria Live on Surfaces?
