In 1621, the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn harvest feast that is acknowledged today as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies. For more than two centuries, days of thanksgiving were celebrated by individual colonies and states. It wasn't until 1863, in the midst of the Civil War, that President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day to be held each November.

Thanksgiving Day is a holiday celebrated primarily in the United States and Canada. Thanksgiving is celebrated each year on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States and on the second Monday of October in Canada. Because of the longstanding traditions of the holiday, the celebration often extends to the weekend that falls closest to the day it is celebrated. Several other places around the world observe similar celebrations. Historically, Thanksgiving had roots in religious and cultural tradition. Today, Thanksgiving is primarily celebrated as a secular holiday.

It is a 4 day weekend and a great time to travel and see family and friends.

Very true Sir,

On the first day we thank Sun God, on the second day the bulls and cows and on the third day 'kANum pongal', we visit

relatives and friends or have a family get together in the nearby beach / river side.

Thai Pongal ( தைப்பொங்கல்) is a
Thanksgiving festival at the end harvest season also celebrated as Harvest festival by the

Tamilians
in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, the Indian Union Territory of Pondicherry and Sri Lanka. This South Indian festival,

Thai Pongal, is timed by an astronomical event - the
winter solstice Pongal is traditionally dedicated to the Sun God Surya, and

marks the beginning of the northward journey of the Sun from its southernmost limit, a movement traditionally referred to as

uttarayana it coincides with the festival
Makara Sankranthi celebrated throughout India as the winter harvest, and is usually

held from January 13–15 in the
Gregorian calendar i.e. from the last day of the Tamil month Maargazhi to the third day of

Thai
. This also represents the Indic solstice when the sun purportedly enters the 10th house of the Indian zodiac i.e. Makaram

or Capricorn. The saying "Thai piRandhal vazhi piRakkum" (தை பிறந்தால் வழி பிறக்கும்) meaning "the commencement of

Thai paves the way for new opportunities" is often quoted regarding the Pongal festival. Tamils thank the Sun god (
கதிரவன்)

Surya
for the good harvest and consecrate the first grain to him on this 'Surya Mangalyam'. Tamilians decorate their homes

with banana and mango leaves and embellish the floor with decorative patterns drawn using rice flour.

Dear RR Maam,

Very beautifully put across the entire celebrations of Pongal. Yes IMO Pongal is the one festival that stands out as a typical TN festival. All other festivals are celebrated across country. Though Punjabis also celebrate the Makarasakranthi in grandway, i feel those four days the entire TN wears a festive look and all the farmers, his family and friends and the entire villages look wonderful in their vibrant colours!! Bullock carts painted , all the cattle washed and their horns painted in various colours and every house has huge "Kolam" in the front with Poosani flower kept in samll cowdung balls in the centre.
We can see such joy everywhere in the nook and corner of the village!! I am longing to go over to my village for this Pongal!!

Cheers.

Hey what about the poor turkeys that become victims of Thanks Giving?
I don't think they would feel it's a Thanks Giving for them?

Dear Dr,
IMO its one sort of thanks giving that their life has ended as a turkey and may be it is destined to be born as a Human - elevation to a hghest form of birth!! from the smallest creature to the Biggest one!! Thanks giving to the turkeys as wel!!

Cheers.

LOL!

Once I had a patient who used to call himself Atma Jnaani and he used to be dressed like a Swamiji.
He also used to distribute religious booklets and hold meditation classes.

I used to feel Ok..he is a great soul and treat him well etc.
One day to my surprise he told me he is Non Veg.

I was thinking "What?"

He told me the it is Ok to eat non veg cos only the body of the animal dies and not the soul.

I was surprised and told him but since he calls himself Atma Jnaani why is he still eating Non Veg?

He said doctor you do not understand the concept of life and death.
The animal gets elevated to a higher life form when it dies.

One day when he came to see me he was kind of worried of his health and he asked me if he will be alright.
I said "don't worry only your body is sick...your soul is healthy..you can never really die"

[h=2]One Man’s Story— Importance of Thanksgiving day written by Anthony Robbins[/h]
On Thanksgiving many years ago,
a young family awoke with a sense of foreboding. Instead of looking forward to a day filled with gratitude, they were preoccupied by thoughts of what they did not have. At best, they would scrape together a meager meal on this day of “feasting.” If they had contacted a local charity group, they would have had a turkey with all the trimmings, but they hadn’t. Why? Because they, like many other families, were proud people. Somehow they would make do with what they had.

The difficult situation led to frustration and hopelessness, then to irreparable, harsh words between the mother and father. The eldest son felt devastated and helpless as he watched the people he loved most become more and more angry and depressed.

Then destiny intervened…a loud and unexpected knock at the door! The boy opened it and was greeted by a tall man in rumpled clothing. He was grinning broadly, carrying a huge basket brimming with every conceivable Thanksgiving delight: a turkey, stuffing, pies, sweet potatoes, canned goods---everything for a holiday feast!

The family was stunned. The man at the door said, “This is from someone who knows you’re in need and wants you to know that you’re loved and cared for.” At first, the father of the family didn’t want to take the basket, but the man said, “Look, I’m just a delivery person.” Smiling, he set the basket in the boy’s arms, turned to leave, then called over his shoulder, “Have a great Thanksgiving!”

In that moment, this young man’s life was forever changed. With this simple act of kindness, he learned that hope is eternal, that people---even “strangers”---really do care. The sense of gratitude he felt moved him deeply, and he swore to himself that someday he’d do well enough to give something back to others in a similar way. And by the time he was eighteen years old, he had begun to fulfill that promise. With his scant earnings, he set out to purchase groceries, not for himself, but for two families he had learned were in dire need of food. He then drove to deliver them, dressed in an old pair of jeans and a T-shirt, intending to present the gift as if he were a delivery boy. When he arrived at the first dilapidated house, he was greeted by a Latina woman who looked at him suspiciously. She had six children, and her husband had abandoned the family only a few days before. They had no food.

The young man offered, “I have a delivery for you, ma’am.”He then went out to his car and began to carry in bags and boxes overflowing with food: a turkey, stuffing, pies, sweet potatoes, canned goods. The woman’s jaw dropped. The children, when they saw the food being brought into the house, let out shrieks of delight.

The young mother, who spoke only broken English, grabbed the young man by the arm and started to kiss him all over, saying, “You gift from God! You gift from God!”

“No, no,” the young man said. “I’m just the delivery boy. This is a gift from a friend.” Then he handed her a note that said,

This is a note from a friend. Please have a wonderful Thanksgiving---you and your family deserve it. Know that you are loved. And someday, if you have the chance, please do well enough to do this for someone else and pass on the gift.

The young man continued to bring in bag after bag of groceries. The excitement, joy, and love reached a fever pitch. By the time he left, the sense of connection and contribution moved the young man to tears. As he drove away, looking back at the smiling faces of the family he’d had the privilege to help, he realized that that his story had come full circle, that the “horrible day” from his youth was actually a gift from God, guiding him, pointing him toward fulfillment through a life committed to contribution. With this one act he began a quest that continues to this day: to return the gift that was given to him and his family and to remind people that there is always a way to turn things around, that they are loved, and that---with simple steps, a little understanding, and massive action---whatever challenges exist now can be turned into valuable lessons and opportunities for personal growth and long-term happiness.

How do I know so much about this young man and his family, not only about what they did, but also how they felt? Because he is me.

Our thanksgiving in Pongal/Sankranti. I do however think that thanksgiving is a very nice concept. We don't have anything like it here in the UK. But then just like Halloween is already a big deal what with all the children insisting on going trick or treating out here, it will only be a matter of time for this American celebration to be thrust upon us here! Can't wait! :D

During the several decades of living in USA I have found that this is the time of celebrations, and families making immense effort to get together. There is a joyous mood in general and I hope those that are not in USA can sense that spirit across the cyber world.

However 45 million turkeys are getting slaughtered and there are historical accounts of settlers that did atrocities to native Americans around Thanksgiving Day.

Controversies have existed about what is being celebrated at this time..with new twists added every so often

Dear TVK, I take it from your tone that you live in the states these days and are unhappy with it or simply live in TN and speak from a place of incorrect education and assumption. Thanks for mentioning Thai Pongal it too is an awesome holiday. Let me try to assist your bent understanding of the Thanksgiving Holiday. These "DAYS" you are referring to are our national holiDAYS. This one in particular is one based on gratitude and showing appreciation for the gifts of life. In American culture we do not send greeting cards on Thanksgiving we call or visit family. If you buy a card and send it to someone on Thanksgiving it would generally be in addition to personally communicating with them and meant to give a physical memento for remembrance of the gratitude expressed. Regarding your belief that they are simply excuses to boost trade. This is false (although that argument can be strongly made for Valentines Day) the days has always been based on solidarity and gratitude and became a national holiday for "Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens" during the CIVIL WAR of the USA. When you live in a nation of our size that is as affluent as we generally are compared to other nations of similar size ANY single day widely celebrated by giving gifts is going to cause an explosion of commerce. Hence the "holiday buying season" that leads up to Christmas Day (a christian holiday). But I digress because we DO NOT GIVE GIFTS on Thanksgiving Day only the gift of shared time and food are given. Oh and messages... they cost nothing so unless you are devaluing contact with loved ones I do not understand where your venom is directed.
