ch12a.jpg

ch12c.jpg

This hay box cooker is a nice invention. :thumb:

One of my relatives used to remove the 'vengalap pAnai' from the stove, as soon as the rice + water touch the boiling point,

cover it with a jute cloth, keep it on a small wooden plate and close the entire set with one 'adukku'. Within 20 minutes the

rice will be well cooked and there will be no need to drain extra 'kanji' because the proportion of rice : water = 1 : 3.

I have realized long ago that these birds are smarter than we think they are. You have a point....they may come out with their "Plan B", "Plan C" etc. I am keeping a watch. So far I have been successful in keeping them away from my balcony. (I have posted the information here as I heard from my friends in Chennai that this is a problem in some areas of Chennai too)

Does she speak Chinese language in the above ad?

BTW, I got a mail giving many uses of lemon peel and shall post one by one, here.

Use of lemon peel.

1. Make an All-Purpose Cleaner

You can use lemon peels and vinegar to make a great and all-natural all-purpose cleaner. Do this by filling a container of your choice with lemon peels.

Add in vinegar to cover the peels and seal with a tight-fitting lid. Put the container away and forget about it for two weeks. After two weeks, strain the

lemon peels from the vinegar and add water to the lemon vinegar. This mixture will clean the greasiest and dirtiest spots around the house and you'll

never have to buy and all-purpose cleaner again!

2. Skin Lightener or Brightener

Lemon is a natural skin lightener because it contains citric acid which is actually a bleaching agent. Apply the leftover lemon peels to your hands,

face
or wherever else you would like to lighten the skin and tighten the pores.

28 Creative uses for Orange Peel

1. Orange Zest

This is probably the most self-explanatory of all the uses for orange peels. Zesting an orange peel with a shredder is a great way to add a sweet and tangy taste to your meat marinades or favorite baked goods. Orange zest can even taste great in your morning cup of coffee or afternoon cup of tea!

2. Preserve Brown Sugar

Add your orange peels to brown sugar to help draw the moisture away from the sugar and keep it from solidifying.

3. Start a Fire

This fire-colored fruit can also be used to start a fire! Use a dried orange peel as kindling the next time you are on a camping trip, or make your hearth fires fragrant and bright.

4. Make Orange Peels Dipped in Chocolate

A wonderful delicacy, candied orange peels are a popular after-meal snack in a number of European cultures, and they are quite easy to make! Just melt some chocolate and cover one or all sides of a sugared orange peel.

5. Make Orange Peel Candy

Candied orange peels are made by boiling a dried orange peel in sugar for about an hour. You can then cover them in chocolate as mentioned above, or roll them around in sugar for an even sweeter taste!

6. Orange-Peel Infused Olive Oil

If you want to give your salads a kick, place one dried orange peel in your olive oil and your greens will be much more exciting.

7. Make Orange Tea

No need for tea bags here! Dry out a few orange peels and place them in hot water next time you are craving a warm orangey beverage. Orange tea is also great for when you are feeling congested - the citrus will open up your sinuses.

8. Create a Natural Sponge

Orange peels can be used as a sponge too! Before the peel completely dries out, it contains a number of essential oils that are helpful in degreasing surfaces as well as pots and pans. If your sink or counter is full of grease, use an orange peel to scrub it down.

9. Deodorizer

It's no secret that the smell of a freshly peeled orange can clear out a room. Instead of shocking people with the strong smell of orange, place the peels at the bottom of your garbage bin, or hang the peels from a string in your bathroom for fresh scents all the time.

10. Garbage Disposal Cleaner

A great way to clean out your garbage disposal is by putting orange peels down the disposal. Place them in the disposal and run it until clear, then run some water down after it. The citrus will get rid of any yucky scents coming from the disposal.

11. Air Freshener

Boil orange peels in hot water to help fresh the air in the kitchen. You can also add a cinnamon stick or mint into the mix if you want to recreate the smell of air fresheners. If you have a fire going at home, place a paper bag filled with dried orange peels into the fire and your house will smell wonderful.

13. Citrus Cleaner

You can make your own citrus cleaner by infusing vinegar with orange peels with a bit of boiling water.

14. Orange Peel Candle

Make a candle at home with orange peels infused inside.

15. Topiary Tree

Make your own topiary tree with orange peels for a great smelling piece of home decor.

16. Body Scrub

Wrap up the orange peels in gauze pads and rub them on your skin while you are in the shower. The scrub will brighten your skin and give it a great smell.

17. Bath Oil

Extract the oil from the orange peels by grinding up the peels and fermenting them with vodka or alcohol for about 3 days. Strain the oil and add a few drops to your bath. Orange oil is known for its anti-inflammatory properties as well as for improving the skin tone and texture.

18. Bath Powder

Dry out the orange peels completely and then grind them down to paste in the food processor. Do this until the rinds become a fine powder and then sprinkle only a bit in your bath.

Orange oil can be used to naturally relieve anxiety and depression by taking a bath or rubbing just a bit on the temple and forehead area.

21. Make a Bird Feeder

To make a natural bird feeder that the birds will just love, cut an orange in half and remove the fruit. Take the orange-half and poke 3 evenly spaced holes near the cut section of peel. There, attach a sturdy piece of string and hang it from a tree. Fill the empty orange peel with bird seed and wait for your flying visitors to pile in!

22. Mosquito Repellant

If you are looking for a natural way to repel mosquitos, take fresh orange peels and rub them all over your skin. The citrusy smell will repel the mosquitos.

'kOla mAvu' made with rice does not stick well on to the virtrified tiled floor and chaps off easily. My friend suggested to add a teaspoon of

'maida', but it makes the bright colour dull. This time (for Pongal kOlam) this idea worked out very well. Take one tablespoon of 'idli mAvu'

and mix 100 ml water. Then strain through a tea filter. Use this strained liquid (instead of water) to grind the soaked rice to make 'kOla mAvu'.

Today, I needed a plastic spoon and then a scrubber to remove it fully! :thumb:

25 Amazing uses for Lemon Peels

25-uses-for-lemon-peels.jpg

Skin Lightener/Brightener

Lemon is a natural skin lightener because of the citric acid in them which is a bleaching agent. Apply leftover lemon peels to your hands, elbows and heels to refresh and lighten the skin and tighten pores.

Garbage Disposal Deodorizer

Lemon (or orange) peels tossed regularly into the garbage disposal will keep the garbage disposal smelling fresh.

Simmering Stove Top Scents

Add lemon rinds to simmering water along with cloves, cinnamon sticks, and orange peels to make a delightful aroma AND humidify the air.

Ant-Proof Your Kitchen

Scatter small slices of lemon peel along thresholds, windowsills, around door entrances, and near any cracks or holes where ants or pests may be entering. Ants do not like lemon and will not enter your home. Lemons are also effective against roaches and fleas.

Coffee Cup Stain Remover

Put a section of lemon peel into a stained coffee mug and add water. Let it sit for several hours, then wipe with a cloth. Stains should disappear.

Refrigerator Freshness

Cut lemon in half and let it absorb fridge smells.

Tea Kettle/Coffee Pot Cleaner

For mineral deposit build up in your tea kettle, fill the kettle with water, add a handful of thin slices of lemon peel and bring to a boil. Turn off heat and let sit for an hour, drain, and rinse well. For coffee pots, add ice, salt and lemon rinds to the empty pot; swish and swirl for a minute or two, dump, and rinse.

Microwave Cleaner

Add lemon rinds to a microwave-safe bowl filled halfway with water. Cook on high for 5 minutes, allowing the water to boil and the steam to condense inside. Carefully remove the hot bowl and wipe away the mess with a damp towel.

Chrome Polish

Cut through mineral deposits on chrome faucets and other tarnished chrome by rubbing with a squeezed lemon half, rinsing, and lightly buffing with a soft cloth.

Copper, Brass, & Stainless Steel Polish

Brighten copper, brass, or stainless steel by dipping a juiced lemon half in salt (you also use baking soda or cream of tartar for the salt) and rubbing on the affected area. Leave on for 5 minutes. Then rinse in warm water and polish dry.

Stove Top Humidifier

If your home suffers from dry heat in the winter, put lemon peels in a pot of water and simmer on the lowest stove-top setting to humidify and scent the air.

Cutting Board Refesher

The antibacterial properties of lemons make them a good choice for refreshing cutting boards. After disinfecting give the surface a rub with a halved lemon, let sit for a few minutes, and rinse.

Brown Sugar Keeper

Add lemon peel (with pulp removed) to brown sugar to help keep it moist and easy to use.

Lemon Zest

Zest is simply grated peel, and it can be used fresh, dried, or frozen. If you don’t have a zester, use the smallest size of a box grater. To dry zest, spread it on a towel and leave out until dried, then store in a jar. To freeze, use a freezer-safe container. Use zest in salads, marinades, baked goods, grain dishes, etc.

Lemon Twists

Use a vegetable peeler or a knife to cut the peel into long strips, cutting away the white pith which is bitter. These can also be frozen in a freezer-safe container or bag. Great in cocktails, sparkling water, and tap water.

Lemon Extract Powder

Using the zest or twists from above, dry the strips skin-side down on a plate about 3 or 4 days. Put in a blender (or spice grinder) and pulverize into a powder. Use the powdered peel in place of extract or zest in recipes.

Lemon Sugar

Add lemon extract powder (see above) to sugar, or use fresh twists, put them in a jar with sugar and let them infuse the sugar.

Lemon Pepper

Mix lemon extract powder (see above) with freshly cracked pepper.

Candied lemon peel

Candied peels can be eaten plain, or dipped in melted chocolate, used in cake, cookie, candy, or bread recipes.

Lemon Sugar Scrub

Mix 1/2 cup sugar with finely chopped lemon peel and enough olive oil to make a paste. Wet your body in the shower, turn off the water and massage sugar mix all over your skin, rinse. Feel the softness!

Nail Whitener

Whiten fingernails by rubbing with a lemon wedge.

Travel Sickness Cure

Suck on a slice of lemon to help you stop feeling nauseous.

Grater Cleaner

Remove dried food from your grater by rubbing with the pulp side of a cut lemon.

Firelighters

Bake discarded orange or lemon peels until they darken. These create natural, fragrant firelighters.

Trash Can Deodorizer

Throw a few lemon peels in the bottom of the can from time to time to keep it smelling fresh.

Tiny bit of bath soap can not be used easily and because of the high price, we won't like to throw them away!

Take an old sock and collect the pieces. It can be used to hand wash blouses because the detergents might

make the color fade! After use, squeeze and hang the sock using a cloth clip.

P.S: My friend calls it 'kozhukkattai soap'! :)
