I have written about Janata method of pressing cloths. That is, ONLY the portions which are visible need to be 'ironed'!! :)

Now it is about Janata trousers! One suit length had about 75 cms of extra cloth and I did not want it to go waste.

So, I made the legs of the trousers, which covered from ankles to a few inches above the knees using this nice cloth and

attached a matching cotton cloth for the rest of the portion. Since I wear long tops which cover up to the knees, this trousers

look great! :thumb:

Useful Tips
1. Rub your ears to boost energy: Feeling sluggish at your desk? Instead of reaching for another cup of coffee, give your ears a gentle self-massage. According to Chinese medicine, stimulating the pressure points in the ears increases blood circulation to all parts of the body, giving you an instant energy boost.

2. Cure hiccups with peanut butter. The next time hiccups strike, reach for a spoonful of peanut butter. Chewing and swallowing the sticky spread will interrupt your breathing pattern and force your diaphragm to relax. Voila—no more hiccups!

3. Use honey to soothe a sore throat. Drinking tea or water with honey is an age-old home remedy for easing sore throat pain. A natural antibacterial and antifungal agent, honey can help coat and soothe sore throats and alleviate minor coughs.

4. Blow-dry waterlogged ears. If water gets trapped in your ears after a swimming session, put a hair dryer on the gentlest setting and hold it a few inches away from your ear. The increased airflow will help to evaporate the water in your ear.

5. Make warts disappear with garlic. Garlic—which has been shown to have antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal properties—is thought to be an effective home remedy for warts. Apply a freshly cut garlic clove to the wart, place a bandage over it, and leave the bandage on overnight. Repeat every night until the wart disappears.

6. Blow on your thumb to calm jangled nerves. Have the jitters before a presentation? Blow on your thumb to normalize your heart rate. The thumb has its own pulse, and blowing on the thumb will cool down the thumb and thus calm the heart rate, as cold air can slow down your pulse. This trick might also help simply because the act of blowing forces you to deepen your breathing, which calms the heart.

7. Sniff peppermint to quell a craving. The easiest way to reduce cravings? Chew mint gum, sip peppermint tea, or take a whiff of peppermint oil. Studies suggest that the scent of peppermint stimulates the brain to release appetite-suppressing hormones and promotes a feeling of fullness.

8. Curl your toes to fall asleep faster. The next time you find yourself tossing and turning, try a progressive muscle relaxation technique. Begin by slowly curling and uncurling your toes. Then, work your way up the entire body, from your toes to your neck, tightening a certain muscle group before releasing it.

9. Smile to make yourself happier. For an instant mood boost, smile! Scientists have found that the simple act of smiling can lower blood pressure and release stress, giving you an instant mood boost (yes, even forced smiles count!).

10. Press your tongue against the roof of your mouth to beat brain freeze. Also referred to as “ice cream headaches,” brain freezes are caused by a rapid increase in blood flow to the brain. After you down a frozen treat, try thrusting your tongue against the roof of your mouth—this will warm up the palate and ease the flow of blood to the brain.

11. Rub Vicks Vaporub on feet for congestion. To temporarily relieve a cough, try applying the mentholated topical cream on the soles of your feet and immediately covering with a pair of socks. There is no scientific explanation for why this old wives’ trick works, but many stuffy nose-sufferers (and even nurses and doctors) swear by it.

12. Use ginger to prevent motion sickness. Ginger is a time-honored natural cure for nausea and motion sickness. Twenty minutes before travel, take two capsules of powdered ginger to ease an upset stomach caused by motion sickness.

13. Shake your head to wake up sleepy feet. It happens to all of us—you’re sitting in an awkward position when all of a sudden your foot, hand or other body part falls asleep. To quickly eliminate that uncomfortable tingling sensation, move your head side to side. The movement helps relieve nerve tension.

14. Alleviate nausea by massaging wrist. Relieve nausea by lightly massaging the pressure point on the inside of your wrist, about three finger widths below the base of your palm.

15. Squeeze lemon to erase pimples. Banish breakouts by dabbing a little lemon juice on problem areas—its antibacterial properties will help kill excess bacteria and reduce acne.

16. Dab on clove oil to alleviate toothache pain. Apply a very small amount of clove oil to a cotton swab and gently dab onto the affected tooth area. The essential oil has been shown in studies to have both analgesic and antibacterial properties, making it a useful tool in treating bacteria-caused toothaches.

17. Inhale onion vapors for sinus relief. The next time your sinuses are clogged, try this natural remedy: Chop up an onion, put it in a bowl, and inhale the onion fumes. The onion vapors help open sinus passageways, providing relief from sinus pressure.

18. Stop mouth bleeds with tea bags. To stop mouth bleeds after oral surgery or injuries, apply a moistened tea bag to the affected area; the tannins in tea help the blood coagulate faster.

19. Steam to relieve nasal congestion. Stuffy nose? Hit the steam room. Steam helps to loosen mucus and clear out the sinus cavities, providing relief from nasal congestion. A hot bath works, too.

20. Sleep on your left side to prevent acid reflux. Does an uncomfortable burning sensation keep you up at night? To prevent nighttime acid reflux from striking, sleep on your left side. Researchers have determined that left-side sleeping helps with digestion and eases heartburn pain.

21. Massage temples to relieve headaches. Gently massage your temples (in line with your eyes, on the side of your head) to release tension in the facial muscles and increase circulation to the brain.

22. Use bacon to stop a nosebleed. An eyebrow-raising study published in the Annals of Otology, Rhinology and Laryngology recommends bacon as an effective medical cure for chronic and uncontrollable nosebleeds. When rolled up into a plug and inserted into the nose, the cured bacon promptly stopped nasal bleeding.

23. Munch on apples to clean teeth. A crunchy apple acts like a toothbrush as you chew it. The process of chewing an apple removes excess food and bacteria from your mouth. Apples also contain malic acid, a chemical used in teeth whitening products, which helps dissolve stains.

24. Eat bread to chop an onion without crying. It may sound silly, but try holding a slice of bread in your mouth the next time you chop onions. The claim is that the bread “soaks up” the noxious onion gases and prevents them from reaching the olfactory nerves, keeping you tear-free.

25. Sing to prevent snoring. Finally, an excuse to tap into your inner pop star: To put sleep-disruptive snoring to rest, try belting out your favorite song for a few minutes daily. According to studies, daily singing sessions can increase muscle control in the throat and soft palate, reducing the frequency of snoring in just three months.

26. Eat bananas to prevent leg cramps. Do painful leg or foot cramps jolt you awake in the middle of the night? A potassium deficiency might be to blame. Munch on potassium-rich bananas to keep leg cramps at bay.

27. Ease heartburn symptoms with baking soda. Banish heartburn by guzzling a glass of water mixed with 1 teaspoon of baking sodium. Baking soda—or sodium bicarbonate—is a base, so it can help neutralize stomach acid and alleviate heartburn symptoms.

28. Squeeze the tips of the toes for sinus relief. To relieve sinus pressure, try this reflexology technique: Squeeze the tips of the toes in a clockwise motion individually for about five seconds, and repeat on all 10 toes. The technique can increase blood circulation to the sinus and nose area, making breathing easier.

29. Stop a sneeze in its tracks. If you feel a sneeze coming on, push your tongue against the roof of your mouth directly behind your two front teeth; repeat the movement until the urge to sneeze fades.

30. Heal cuts with black pepper. The next time you have a minor cut, sprinkle some black pepper on it. Studies suggest that black pepper contains an antibacterial compound called piperine, which stimulates healing and helps blood coagulate faster.

Vitrified floors are smooth and shiny and look nice. But iron wheels / stands are their prime enemies and the scratches they

make are permanent! The sewing machine has iron wheels and I used to keep pieces of plastic mats under them to prevent

scratches while moving the machine. But, after a few moves, the plastic gets worn out.

Last week a new idea struck when I was about to dispose of the used liquid mosquito repellent bottles. I cut the top portion of

four bottles to make them like cups and put them under the wheels. Cool........ Now I move the machine easily and no worry

about the scratches on the floor! :thumb:

Elderly women find it difficult to wear a saree and opt nighties as their usual dress. But occasionally they have to wear a saree!

For my mom, I prepared a few ready-to-wear six yards sarees. It is not very difficult to make.

Tie up the saree as usual and mark the height all along, till the end of the pleats. Fold the saree at that height and put long stitches

wide enough to hold an elastic band and then insert one till the end of the pleats. Fix the elastic band on both ends with the saree.

Attach the starting end of the saree under the pleats. Leave the rest of the saree free. While folding the saree, take care that

the pleated portion is not affected. Matching stretch blouse, easy to wear, will be a good combination for the saree. :)

 right?

P.S: The elastic band should be about four inches less than the waist size.

It is rightly said: 'Necessity is the mother of invention!' :)

My elderly mom finds it difficult to walk up and down to use the toilet. To help her reduce the number of steps taken, I did this.

Selected a plastic chair with five bars in the seat portion; cut off the middle three with a heated knife ( it is like cutting butter! );

covered the cut edges with plastic cloth of rice bags; fixed them smoothly using insulation tape; put an empty plastic bucket,

which had wall paint earlier, with correct height to slide under the chair!

Yes! Now, the 'royal throne' is ready to use!

in olden days people used wooden seats in chair with a circular hole in the middle with a bucket below with water and phenyle for very senior citizens.

it used to be effective and stable unlike plastic buckets.which could topple due to light weight

if the skin of the elder ids soft , the elastic could leave marks and could be uncomfortable.

also elastics can loosen or waist size could change leading to more misery.

I was reading somewhere, some one advising young ladies not buy correct fitting clothes all together at marriage time ,

the size has a way of changing due to excessive happiness and one will have to discard a lot of expensive clothing.

my maid wears wears a lot of expensive dresses which have been discarded by mydaughter/DIL within a year of marriage due to size change[ mostly churidhars and tops]

now my maid looks like a new bride . the clothes fit her exactly .lol

dear krish,

i too have seen the old wooden chairs with a hole in the centre with aluminium pail. it was used by the elderly, the rich and women immediately post labour, in my native badagara. the resulting mess was cleaned by the women of the house who dumped it god knows where!

the rest of us, used the hole in the ground, with the bucket cleared bi weekly by scavengers. :(

having said that, raji has to be complemented for her ingenuity. it is easy for anyone to poke holes into her innovation, but the fact is that she came up with a solution to a rather inconvenient problem that comes with age.

chances are with raji mom, that the old herself had to clean up. for the fact is, very seldom, the man of the house would do that. and i cannot imagine today's maid servants (unlike those of my grandparents times) agreeing to do this.

dear krish, not meaning to chastise you here under any circumstances. but these situations will come to us at some time in life, for many of us. raji has given one solution. why dont others come up with alternatives?

thank you.

dear krish,

i am curious about the 'excessive happiness' part. does this mean uncontrolled eating? or is there a relationship with happiness and weight? just wondering!!

also delighted that your maid now looks like a new bride. ofcourse, your daughter/DIL too still share the same status, it goes unsaid. and definitely not vice versa ;)

Dear Kunjuppu Sir,

Thanks for your reply post. :)

I could make the alterations in the plastic chair and also cover the rough edges
very easily. My mom is really happy because the

one she used last year in my sibling's house, when she was weak due to cold weather, was not good. A circular hole was made in

a plastic chair and a plastic vessel inserted in it. The uneven seat used to hurt her! :(

Sing Chennai tailors are smart. They fix the sleeves of the blouse in gent's shirt style and make a few parallel stitches

about half an inch apart. When the lady bulges, the stitches could be removed one by one, to make the blouse fit her! :thumb:

P.S: Please check a shirt to know how the sleeves are attached!

Was known to my parents and tailors several decades ago. All shirts and drawers (shorts) were stitched with provision for expansion in width and height. In fact I used this technique later too when the most preferred design shirts were available only in larger sizes. Irritating part was the necessity to use refitted clothes of elder siblings when they bulged beyond limits.

Some years ago, my wife, when her arm was in sling, had many blouses made with velcros instead of buttons and hooks. Easy to slip into without outside help.

K saheb

I am unable to enlighten you .

I do not live with my children

I have no way of knowing the cause for bloating of next generation.lol

I have surmised it as due to excessive happiness.lol

you know sarang ji
Due to wisdom of last generation we boys always wore clothes couple of sizes larger. they in their enthusiasm to provide for the future growth were liberal in sizing of clothes

we had half pants reaching a few inches below the knee[ they were three quartes pants] . shirts were between half and full . there were spare shirt and pant buttons in

the linings of shirts and pockets .

we had large pockets in shirts and deep pockets in pants so that nothing used to get lost .

safety pins were used if money was put in pockets.

ink pens were safely kept away from shirts.

we were well looked after kids

And patches in shorts and shirts were invented ages before they made a reappearance as 'beauty patches' in leather in faded (intentional) jeans.

Dear Sir,

Velcro bits are good replacement for buttons / hooks ONLY for loose fitting garments like nighties or loose tops.

For blouses?? If they happen to be tight fitting, even a sigh of relief will produce tiny cracking noises, which embarrass! :D

Care should be taken to fasten all the bits properly before machine wash. Otherwise their hooks stick to other garments! :)

One kid in our family used to say with a sad note in his tone,

"My mom always buys my dress for the next birthday now itself!"

Comfort dresses and tight fitting - is there a connection?
For velcro, pulling strength is 1 to 2 psi (pounds per square inch) and shear strength is 6 to 10 psi. A big big sigh is necessary to separate a well stitched joint.
