Independence Day

India has completed 66 years of Independence ...We are celebrating the 67th Independence day on 15th August 2013..There will be parades and pageants celebrating the occasion..There will be flag hoisting ceremonies and cultural events galore!

We have been freed from foreign yoke...India was divided on religious lines in 1947 by the British which was accepted by the powers that be at that time

India however gets weakened by separatist and terrorist organizations (some homegrown & others from across the border)

We are not on friendly terms with our neighbours be it China or Pakistan

We still have a third of the world's poor..

But there are lots of positives

We are probably the 3rd largest economy in the world

We have made rapid strides in defence, agriculture, manufacturing and services

My wish is that if our borders can be redrawn and India, Pakistan and Bangladesh can become one country then no one can challenge us in the world!

I feel proud to be an Indian! Vande Mataram!

What are your thoughts and what is your wish!

Sir,

I too feel proud to be an Indian.

No doubt, we are marching ahead

With

1) Large number of communities
2 )Large number of languages
3)Different Religions: i.e. Hindu, Islam, Christianity, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, etc
4)Large number of political parties, and
5)Growing population

We are showing progress in number of fields which is our uniqueness.

Let us emulate positive things and grow rich.

Vande Mataram.

With regards:)

P.S: Of course, we have problems too, being attended at higher levels

Real independence is achieved only when we also break free from the western values and ideals, which we acquired earlier because of the British influence and now because of the American influence. Also we need to realize that there is enough indigenous knowledge and personnel that can offer ingenious solutions to our problems.

But I agree we cannot totally abandon all that is alien because of a global culture emerging but let us wear it only as our appearance and let our own values act as the soul.

Any reason for advocating this radical step?

Several of them:

1) It tends to indicate that prior to 1947 we were never independent.
2) It serves as a reminder of the Colonial baggage
3) This is synonymous with the partition of India

The Republic day is good enough as it signifies the constitution coming into effect.

vgane,

india is the 3rd largest economy of asia. not of the world. there are quite a few, ahead still, though it is only a matter of time before we climb up the ranks.

re akhand bharat, why would you want that. have we not enough trouble with our own 1.2 billion. with additional 300 million or so more, it is that much more trouble and complexities. small countries do better. let us redraw the map of india to smaller states, for better administration and focus on economic growth and poverty removal and social upliftment.

otherwise i am with you.

jai hind.

Sir, I am most of the time with your POV.

Who are "WE" talking about? What was this "WE" before British came? Are you talking of Mugal India? or you are talking of Magadh Kingdom? Does it not depend on what portion of Indian subcontinent?
India as a country was born on August 14 1947. If India as a country existed before that time it was in someone's imagination alone.
Technically speaking:
A country is a region legally identified as a distinct entity in political geography. A country may be an independent sovereign state or one that is occupied by another state, as a non-sovereign or formerly sovereign political division, or a geographic region associated with sets of previously independent or differently associated peoples with distinct political characteristics. The term "country" is generally used to refer to sovereign states.

No way Sir...India is 3rd largest in the world

India is behind US & China and is 3rd in the pecking order and has recently overtaken Japan

prasad,

if one really wants to stretch it, the concept of modern india with its current borders, nationalism and concept of social equality, is a british concept fed to us, and which we bought, because it is superior to the erstwhile feudal kingdom model - especially the islamic one.

one cannot forget, a significant number of muslims wanted india to revert to muslim rule, as it was from the muslim rulers the eastindia company started building its empire (remember siraj ud daulah/clive/plassey anyone?).

the british rule, of all colonial rules, i think, was better of all the devils, and gave us many organizations like the military, railways, bureaucracy, english language - all of which, are glue which help bind modern india together.

we have had 66 + years of independence, and there is no rhyme or reason to blame the british for any of our current shortcomings. if we did not achieve what we dreamt at the dawn of independence, it is due to the failure of our leadership. also failure of our democratic franchise, to be fooled and duped by free grinders and TVs when instead they should have demanded quality free education, health care and the basics.

i think, the electorate are as much responsible for the mess, as the elected. for without the former, the latter would not be in their position of power. right?

We were under Moghul rule and then British rule in the last 1000 years

We are now a liberated nation

Before 1947 the Flag of British India was used ...Besides the pricely states had their own flag

Look at USA...It was under Great Britain rule before being liberated in 1774

The way they celebrate with fireworks, carnivals, concerts and basket ball games on their Independence day is amazing

Our Indian nation politically is far younger

Let us celebrate it with all gusto

Partition is history...We need to move away from that mindset...Let us be rejuvenated on August 15 and be on the quest for health, wealth and overall happiness of our people

ok vgane, no matter what, try to impress the 30% or so who cannot fill their stomach on a daily basis.

here is a better measure...which differentiates purchasing power parity (#3) vs gdp (#10). no matter what we have the largest number of bpl in the world. unless that is ameliorated, we still have ways to go. ok?

I am talking of "we" in a general sense and not necessarily restricted to the idea of a clubbed landmass. Let us even, for a moment, assume the "we" to be a conglomerate of several small kingdoms. Even then, my statement would apply.

If you meant to say that India as a concept did not exist, then I would say that Republic Day is the best way to celebrate that. Not the Independence day.

The moment I put the British Flag, something in me decided I should display the Indian Flag...

We were a liberated lot prior to the Moghul rule. That is, if we treat the Moghul and the British as outsiders.

Btw, I have a question here - if Moghuls were outsiders, why did we not erase their trace? If the British were outsiders why did we not erase their trace?

I am sorry if my post is a dampener and you need not respond to it.

Mr. Auh,
I can accept that you have a pov.
But Before the british came, and we could unite as british were our common enemy, the princely states were in constant state of war with each other. The freedom of the masses were a non existence. Can you imagine being in state of war 365 days of year? There was no liberty, except what was granted by the king (maybe).
Independence is from an oppressive rule, not necessarily from a foreign invader.

The struggle for India's Independence began in 1857 with the Sepoy Mutiny in Meerut. Later, in the 20th century, the Indian National Congress and other political organizations, under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi, launched a countrywide independence movement. Colonial powers were transferred to India on August 15, 1947.

The Constituent Assembly, to who power was to be transferred, met to celebrate India's independence at 11pm on August 14, 1947. India gained its liberty and became a free country at midnight between August 14 and August 15, 1947. It was then that the free India's first prime minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru gave his famous "Tryst with Destiny" speech. People across India are reminded of the meaning of this event - that it marked the start of a new era of deliverance from the British colonialism that took place in India for more than 200 years.

INDEPENDENCE IS the freedom of the soul, a perception of the mind and a feeling understood by the heart. This freedom, perception and more importantly, this feeling is that of liberation, patriotism, self-dependence and other such things. When all such terms are put together and imposed upon the majority, it is a big responsibility on the youth of that nation and on those who create it. That nation is India.

Happy Independence Day everyone.

Lets bow to the memory of our founding fathers & their sacrifice and lets vow to redeem a pledge as yet unfulfilled
