Brahmins have a priestly background which also means that they are basically teachers. Teachers are not only those that teach in schools or colleges but anyone who imparts any kind of knowledge to others. In Brahmin households, violence is never taught nor supported. The focus is more on education, good behaviour, respect for others, kindness, compassion, etc. I have always practiced this ever since I was a kid. There were many 'tough' boys in my class that were not interested in studies but only in having a lot of fun at the cost of others. But I glamourized being intelligent and studious by being fashionable, well dressed, well behaved and being a very good student at the same time. Believe me, it had its own effects and soon these 'Tough or rowdy' boys did very well in their studies. What I mean to say is that we have to set an example to the others by being outstanding citizens of whichever land we live in. Our rich traditions and culture should not be pushed aside in the name of modernization or westernization. I live in Europe for so many years and I don't work for any foreigners but I own two companies. The so called Modernization has led to the creeping in of newer versions of the East India Company into India in the form of MNCs. We need to look into ourselves and try to find out who we are. I am not talking about any racial superiority, but our attitude of non violence that has been passed down to us over innumerous generations.

Will get back to work now and I hope to hear from someone of you...

hello friends,

I am a new member recently joined in Tamil Brahmins.com wishing to share views from our community. As I have thought of anything within this short period, I am unable to say anything but in about a few days I have many more points on ways to help our community to come forward in society through the joint effort of all members.
Yours faithfully

Introduction to the members

Dear Friends,

I am delighted to have been able to know the existence of this site and would be keenly interested in viewing several of the topics on the brahmin culture, various aspects of our various festivals and rites. Should I find myself competent to express my views on any of the subjects I shall do so.

I am a retired employee from one of the UN organizations.

I am not occupied and am fairly free. I love reading and listening to devotional songs.

I would be grateful if any of you could offer me some guidance and advice on meditation and pranayama.

I am doing some pranayamas in the morning hours. I also walk about an hour every day.

Although I am not an introvert I do not have many friends - socially or otherwise.

While in service I used to be proud that I was a popular guy among my colleagues and superiors. I do not have any of those contacts except an occasional formal meeting of pensioners to discuss monetary and financial gains. Strangely, in these meetings no one wants to know of others or interested in sharing feelings and concerns - the only common interest seems to be pension rules and regulations and how they affect financially the pensioners and their families. I do also attach importance and concern to these matters - but shouldn't we also devote some time on such occasions to talk on other matters of interest!!

Nobody told me about the Tamil Brahmins website - I read it on a Sunday newspaper supplement. I am glad that I noticed the item.

Before I close, I wish each and every one of you and your families a Happy Diwali.

Looking forward to hearing from you and with best regards,

Yours sincerely,

G. Raman
