post-marriage Hindu customs

Dear Sis.Umaji: SAIRAM. GOD BLESS U. It is customary for all Hindu Ladies Brahmins inclusive, to follow husband's Gothra and related customs and procedures ONLY. Since interpretations have been changing as per whims and fancies and likes and dislikes, whenever I have any doubt, I always seek clarifications from the Gurus. For me, I write a letter with a self-addressed envelope to Sri Kanchi Mutt and seek the advice of His Holiness and we always get a reply and I follow the same. This is my humble opinion. With Kind Regards.

I'm Uma, iyer vadamal by birth but married to a north indian (he's a kayastha) living in california. I try to perform all the iyer rituals as in my parental home side and teach my daughter the same, though our preference is to teach her values to be a good human being. Good to know about this forum. My native is Mayavaram (near kumbakonam).

My question to all the elders here is,

Since my husband side doesn't belong to iyer community, can I do archanai for my daughter with my parental side gotram?

-Uma

Hi all gr8 to find an online Tam - Brahm community.

Hi all,
This is Saikarthik here I am born n brought up in Pune and am currently working in the software arm of a MNC bank here as an SSE. My father's ancestral origins can be traced back to Milagunur/ Milaganoor near Manamadurai and later on my grandfather had settled in Madurai. My mom's from Thanjavur.I came across this site as I was interested in knowing more about our history and heritage. I was enthused about knowing more about my gothram i.e. atreya and abhivadaye and its meaning, its is very enlightening and surprising to see how systematic our ancestors were.
I found this info in the e-book section. Also, the discussion regarding the history of Tamil Brahmins is awesome I couldn't have found this information anywhere online.I would like to thank all the contributors and creators of this site and I would like to convey my best wishes for all their future endeavors.

Thanks and Regards,
Saikarthik Iyer.

Lost in History of the past

I am from Allampallam village, Kollangode,in Palaghat district where the beautiful river Surya flows and touches base with Bharatapuzha, Kerala's longest river. My grandfather, a lawyer by profession, migrated to Cochin, that is Mattancherry, which was the soul of Cochin (and not the present Cochin-which is a confederation of Cochin, Fort Cochin, Eda Cochin, Ernakulam, Edapally, Thrikkakara, Kkkanad etc). He was a leading lawyer of the Cochin Bar. Cochin is a mosaic of various castes, tribes, cultures- Brahmins of Thekkamadam and Vadekkamadam, Elayachanparambu, Shasta Nagar, Gujaratis, Maharashtrians, Nairs, Menons, Konkanis(GSBrahmins), Vyshas, Christians, Muslims, Anglo Indians, etc. There are various historical monuments in this beautiful town.

My grandfather had two children, one a son and another a daughter. I am the son of the son. My father was a brilliant Engineer, and established the first Engineering foundry at Lalan Road in the 50s of the 20th century. His daughter migrated to Trichur. Her daughter was a Profossor of Physics(Retired) and is in Poonkunnam.

My father had six children. Our family shifted to Madras, and then to Banaglore. I came back to Kochi. My sisters are all well married. My brother, had a massive heart attack and died in Bangalore arond 6 years ago. My father preceded him by two years.

I had the distinction of organizing the first UNIDO Seminar at Kochi. I was the Asst Director of CII, Regional Secretary of Indo-American chamber of Commerce, Executive Secretary of Tirupur Exporters Association, Export Promotion Advisor of Coir Board (Ministry of MSME,GoI) and Consultant to Coconut Development Board (Min of Agriuclture, GoI). I have written 3 books, edited 3 Directories, and compiled the Coir Export Manual and Coconut Export Manual.

I am proud of being a Brahmin, and Brahmins should look out for opportuntiies, show their talent and grow. Impediments are no matter to remember past history!

It is amazing that i read the above 'introduction' just a few hours after the last evening's trip to 'the soul of Cochin' with my young guests, to whom i gave a short lecture near the AAnavathil spot in Mattancheri, near PazhayannurBhagavathy temple (part of the lecture was in essence the same as one paragraph above penned by Sri RV), followed up by stops near the Synagogue, Mosque near Panayappilli (close to Kappalandimukku), the three 'agraharams' (thekkemadam housed a friend of mine, a classmate&close friend and i called on his parents a few times in past years in their time, whenever i visited this part of kerala), and the market and the vicinity of another friend's house, (Pramod Gore, s/o Gore saab, who was proficient in Hindustani music!), and then the cricket player Gujju, NaveenParek ("Sethji" with paan always in his mouth even when playing cricket) -- before we proceeded via Amaravathy (temples!) to FortKochi, the angloIndians' base, and the place of two ancient Churches, and a DurchCemetery! (all this directly or indirectly mentioned in the above piece by Sri RV! what a coincidence!) the world is small! so, here is a junior member, a recent arrival here, saying namaskarams to Sri RV and saying Swaagatham! -- regards, lvngly, rj (the young guests, the victims of my short 'lectures', are visiting family members, who particularly enjoyed the time we spent at the beach, getting drenched&fully wet in brine, while watching sunset with ships anchored in foreground -- and were amazed that a car could navigate&manouvre along the narrow, crowded streets/roads in Mattanchery, esp near LalanRoad, without mishaps of any kind)

Thank you, Rajuvish for visiting my abode

It was indeed a pleasure to read from Rajuvish, the detailed descriptions of landmarks of Mattancherry, Anavathil, Kappalandimukku, Amaravathi, the lovely lazy sea, Fort Kochi, Pazhayannur Bhagavati temple, St Francis Church and Lalan Road. Thekkamadam, and other places, has always remained as vestige. I had recollected these impressions in the two books I penned- The Vestige of a Grand Past, and Saga of Cochin. My contribution on Cochin also appears in the Viswa Vijnana Kosham, the first Malayalam encyclopedia by National Book stall in 1970. My articles on the various Kochi monuments have appeared in the Sunday edition of the "Hindu" in the 70s.

I thank Rajuvish for rekindling memories of my beuatiful Cochin. Thanks my dear friend.
