Shri Ravi,

Welcome to the forum! I am really surprised to know that an IT man retains his commitment to the family duty of doing temple poojas. How do you manage both, especially since I am told that IT jobs involve shift work?

Hello,

My name is Sridhar. I visited this site sometime back while looking for Sandhyavandanam details at the time of Avaniyavittam 2010.

Warm Regards,
Sridhar.

Hi All:

Greetings from Houston.

I am a Tamil, born and raised in Ramnad taluk near the Sea close to Kilakkarai. Now happily settled in the US as a Sr Research Scientist (Neurobiology). Not a brahmin, but married to one; have a daughter finishing medical school a son finishing at Stanford, CA . I like people from other religion and region. Not religious but tolerant of all. My current interest is Indian politics and how the country is moving forward in spite of the horrendous problems of corruption, poor infrastructure and poor rural health and education. I stumbled upon this site by surfing the web.

Nice reading your posts.

Cheers.

Dear Sow Subhalakshmi,

Welcome to Tamil Brahmins Forum. I am with you in calling Madras as Madras. Tamil Brahmins is a wonderful platform to express your views and discuss issues of importance. Hope to hear from you more.

Best Wishes,
Brahmanyan,
Bangalore.

Thank you Brahmanyan sir,

I have just started exploring this site.. I am sure I will be expressing my views, now that I am semi retired, there is a bit more time on my hands...
Best wishes
Subhalakshmi :-)

Hello Ms Subhalakshmi,

There are many, both in and out of Madras and India, who prefer the old name to Chennai. The logic given by those that favoured the change and the powers that be who effected the change, have not been 'powerful' enough to change the mind set of people like us. Except when I am specifically conscious of it, and the situation demands it, I tend to use only 'Madras' instead of 'Chennai' even after these many years.

I agree with you.. somehow, it feels more close to my heart when I say I am from Madras.. I guess it is all Pazhagina dosham.. :-) so where are you from?? I mean now.. it is nice that, from the moment I joined I have had three mails.. nice to see the warmth of the group.. thank you for making me feel so welcome.. :-)

You are most welcome to the Forum, madam. I am sure you may find it and useful because there are quite a few original thinkers and erudite scholars among the members. There are also several interesting threads going on famously with interesting discussions. Maybe, you can start also some thing new.

As for me, I also joined only about three weeks ago and you may find my postings also in a few threads. I retired as an Education Officer from Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, an All India Central Government Educational setup and I am living in Mylapore, Madras.

Thank you CLN.. for your input.. Education Officer, that is interesting.. my daughter is the Director for a division at the Dept of Education in NY City.. she was in Bangalore for internship and was there to conduct a program.. a few years ago.. Will keep in touch and I will check your thread.. Take care. :-)

Namaskaram all,
My name is Sundar Ramanathan and I am married to Kamakshi. After 13 years in the US, I was able to re connect with my roots in metro Detroit and have been learning the Taittreya Upanishad from Shri Ramesh Bhatt. WE have a thriving community here ( despite the ongoing recession ) and are opening the 2nd North American chapter of the Shringeri Mutt this year ( god willing ). I found this site when I was looking for the 2011 Ammavasai Tharpanam Sankalpam mantram.
Thank you all and if I can help up load info/shlokas etc let me know.
Regards,
Sundar.

Hello Suresh Kumar,

Welcome to the site.. I am also new, as you know.. Yeah! I do agree about the term Madrasi versus Chennian.. :-)) During one of my travels to Madras, I heard the Air Hostess relay a message that we are approaching Chennai... etc.. the way she said Chennai sounded like Chen Naai.. meaning a red dog.. I almost laughed out loud.. anyway, just a little humor..

Your work must be quite interesting..

About taking a bath, I have also the same doubt, but I am guessing it is because, in those days no one lived too far from the loved ones and they would be there when someone passed away and perhaps it started for hygenic purpose, meaning.. in case that person died of some disease like small pox or cholera, just a guess.. so all who were present took a bath, after cleaning the place where the body was kept.. so that might have been the reason.... habits became tradition and so it continues.. this may not be the real answer, but to me it just seems logical..

I am sure you will see the proper answer soon.. . Take care..

Subhalakshmi :-)
