Introduction to Vedic Astrology

Vrischika lagna characteristics:
Scorpio or Vrischika is the eighth sign of the Zodiac. It is indicated by a Scorpion. Scorpio is ruled by the planet Mars, it is fixed, watery, feminine sign, governs sexual organs and the eighth house of the horoscope. It characteristics are deep mystical personality, strong emotions, transcendental drive, attractiveness of beyond and death, passion and depth. It symbolizes personality that is attracted to self-destruction and transcendence of limitation of physical existence; goal is transcendence of corporal, and material self-consciousness.

 
Scorpio is one of the most powerful signs because of their strong will and determination to accomplish whatever they attempt to do. Their analytical mind, strong intuition, reasoning powers, perception, long-range planning ability, magnetism, and energy are assurances of success. As a fixed sign, they have very definite opinions. These opinions can be so rigid that no amount of persuasion will make them change their minds. Since their unconscious mind is more in control than their conscious mind, they lose all sense of judgment under criticism. Under attack, they make effective use of both silence and sarcasm. Unfortunately, their sarcasm can become vindictive. They can, and will, wait a long time in order to get even. It is hard to deceive a Scorpio. Their intuition enables them to understand the motives of other people. They receive very strong first impressions of others experiencing either a liking or a dislike for the person involved. Any work a Scorpio becomes involved in must be important, or appear to be important. Trivialities bore them. They want to become totally engrossed in any task. Like their element, water, they are deep and mysterious. They are considered the most highly sexed sign in the zodiac. It would be far more accurate to describe them as individuals whose intensity of feelings projects them into whatever they are doing. This could be their work, their politics, their fun, or their love life. This emotional intensity, when properly channelled, gives Scorpio great endurance. They battle against seemingly severe odds. Sometimes, in their battles, they trample on others in the process. This is why they are classified as saints or sinners. Basically, they are self-sufficient, but not necessarily self-assured. They are generally healthy, but can be inclined to overindulgence in food, drugs, sex, and alcohol.

Scorpio House in Natal Chart indicates: You need Endurance, deep involvement. Here is where you may have placed many of your emotions and intensities. 10th Lagna - Capricon

They are dependable, particularly in a crisis. They are as a rule not aggressive people, but only express hostility as a defence when attacked. They need people, but have a tendency to isolate themselves from people due to their reserve and fear of being hurt. They ar very selective in choosing their friends, with only a few intimate ones. They are conservative in their thinking and attitudes, as ell as in dress and social mannerisms. They believe in law and order and respect tradition.

It is unusual for them to adopt radical ideas. They are natural organizers and have good leadership ability, which they can use to good advantage. They have strong self-discipline and nothing will sway them from their course if their mind is made up. They will give up many enjoyments in order to reach their goal. But, they must not overdo, or they will suffer physical exhaustion. Their strong desire to succeed at whatever they do enables them to be hard working and patient in the pursuit of their goals. If necessary, they will bear considerable hardship in obtaining these goals. Their inferiority complex demands they produce concrete results from their endeavours. Thus, their most spare time is also spent on practical projects instead of entertainment.

Capricorn like all other zodiac signs contains three Nakshatra which are three forth of Uttara Ashada, entire Shravana Nakshtra and Ist half of the Dhanishta.

Capricorn House in Natal Chart indicates: Indicates this is where you must do restoration, crystallization, and social foundations. Merit is the name of the game here. You must earn your respect here. Many times there are frustrations with this particular energy patterns. Find joy in planting the seeds of patience, relationships, and kindness.

Now let us move on to 11th Lagna that is aquaris or Kumbha lagna.

Aquarius is owned by the planet Saturn , it is fixed, airy, masculine sign, governs ankle and blood circulation and the eleventh house of the horoscope. Its characteristics are originality, progressive attitudes, love for freedom, intellectual, and spiritual. It symbolizes next step toward absolute, personal boundaries are transcended, sense of community and universal values.


 
Aquarius people have the ability to attract others to them, even though they are often seldom understood. They are considered different, because they do not fall into any known pattern. They are friendly, but detached. They have warmth, yet they are distant. They are far more concerned about humanity as a whole than any one particular individual. Aquarius people want to change the world by bringing new ideas to old conditions. They have a profound desire to bring about advances in art, science, politics, and literature, and to establish a new type of human understanding. They have good powers of concentration and are able to assimilate a lot of information. But there is a tendency to be absentminded. They can be extremely stubborn. They are not frightened of the bizarre, the irrational, or the unknown. If destructive, they will rebel for the pleasure of it, striking out blindly in all directions. They will deliberately do things in an attempt to shock people. They like to participate in group activities, and are soon found changing the established structures of these groups for the better. Most of them prefer not to be bound by schedules and regulations. They are rarely found doing dull, routine work. They have many friends, but only a few intimate ones. The typical Aquarian is not easy to classify, for they are constantly adapting themselves to ever-changing circumstances. Since they are not concerned as to what other people think of them, they often do not bother forming opinions about other people's behavior. Aquarius like all other zodiac signs, contains three Nakshatra, which are half of the Dhanishta(avittom), entire sathabhisha and two third(first 3 quarters) of the Poorva Bhadra(poororuttathi).

Aquarius House in Natal Chart indicates: that is where you must have liberality, and reforming. Off with the old and on with the new. Must breakdown old habit patterns that are no longer usable. Water the seeds of love and co-operation, and "Spirit of Love" attitude towards others.

And Meena is the 12th and the last lagna we want to discuss.

Pisces or Meena is the twelfth sign of the Zodiac. It is indicated by a pair of fish swimming in opposite directions. The symbol of Pisces is indicated by two fish joined together by a cord.

Pisces people are creative, self-sufficient people. They have a natural ability for understanding complex material, but this is accomplished by "absorbing" the knowledge rather than studying it. Their minds are extremely active, due to their strong imagination. They sense and feel things that others are not aware of. This trait makes it very difficult for people to lie to them, for they intuitively know when they are being deceived. Pisceans are congenial, adaptable, and versatile people, but they do not have strong willpowers or a dynamic approach to life. This insecurity causes them to seek reassurance from others. Pisces are sensitive, sympathetic, usually gentle, with an inborn reluctance to hurt others or to face any sort of confrontations. Because of this, they can become involved in very difficult emotional situations which they find extremely difficult to break. They intuitively know they are being used, but seem unable to get themselves out of their predicament. This difficulty stems from the fact that Pisceans think with their heart rather than their head, so are easily "used" by others. They are very sympathetic toward the helpless or downtrodden. Their inborn desire to escape from physical living can be used constructively through creativity. If in trouble, they may attempt to rationalize their way out, rather than face the consequences of their behavior. They are generous with their time in helping other people. But, unless they are evolved, they will expect something in return. They always feel their best when they are serving others in some capacity. By using their compassion outwardly for others, they will not become moody and introverted. Their greatest need is to learn to understand their emotional ups and downs. Now we have a basic idea about the main ingredients of a horoscope chart which forms frequent references when we discuss about horoscopes. Other qualities characteristics of Planets, Houses, House-lords, Rashi and Rashi Lords, Nakshatra and its lords, Dasha and its lords etc would be explained as and when required. Like every Lagna has specific characteristics, every planet owing to their placement in different houses also possesses different characteristics. Which mean, if we want to see the effects of the planet in a chart first and foremost we need to ascertain what qualities are stronger. To make things clear, I have already explained that Planets, houses and Rashi and Nakshatra have their own characteristics. So obliviously if a planet is placed in a particular house, first of all it will have its own characteristics, then that the house influence it, and that of the Rashi influences and again it also get influenced from the Nakshatra it is placed. So it becomes a multi dimensional influence on the Planet/house/Rashi. When we think about the prospects of that house we have to think all these aspects. Similarly the results of that house also get influenced by the aspect or other influences of the transit planets. Again, the Dasha, Dasha lord's position in similar influences on it should also be ascertained before trying to predict any result from a house.
 
It is easy to say but very difficult to practice. Initially I also felt very difficult to remember all this. You can start doing it one by one by noting it down on a paper like staring with Lagna in the following manner.

1. Note down the Lagna and its characteristics
2. Note down the LL's characteristics
3. Note down the placement of LL and influences on it as explained above.
4. Note down the Rashi which forms the Lagna and its characteristics
5. Note down the influences on Lagna by way of aspects (called "parvai" in Tamil) of different planets (we are yet to discuss about aspects. yet keep it in mind.)
6. Note down point no. 5 in respect of LL
7. Note down Nakshatra's influencing Lagna and LL and analyze their level of influence (this is most important for accuracy in prediction)
8. Note down all planets placed in Lagna and their level of influence on the house (Lagna) and LL ( In case you are analyzing 2nd house it should be 2nd house and 2nd lord and in case of 3rd it should be 3rd house and 3rd lord like that)
9. Note down Dasha and Dasha Lords position and its influence on Lagna and LL ( like point non 8 make convenient change for each house)
10. Analyze effect of transiting planets’ influence on the House and house lords concerned. (for specific time of delivery of results)
11. Note down what are various yoga’s formed in the chart and expected time of delivery of results of the yoga and co-relate the same with the analysis in progress.
12. Note down the position of Lagna Lord in various varga charts (divisional charts) and see the increase/decrease in strength.
13. Analyze the Ashtavarga points and co relate with the state (to be discussed)
14. Analyze Shadbala of related planets.(to be discussed)
15. Repeat this for each and every house and compile your findings.


 
Prediction is important part and an astrologer is expected to exercise extreme caution before arriving to any sort of conclusion. We all know results are delivered at the time of Dasha antar Dasha subject to Transit aspect of Jupiter & Saturn on the House or lord of the house concerned from which the results are expected. Many results are expected to happen in certain age group of the individual like studies marriage and child birth. So this also has to be kept in mind.
 
Now you are ready with a lot of findings in respect of the chart we are looking at. What is expected now is to cancel all results which are with neutralizing effects or contradicting with one another .For eg. Supposing second house analysis of the person suggests a good wealthy life and if you find from analysis of 10[SUP]th[/SUP] house his prospects of getting a good job very meagre you should be able to co relate the results on the basis of the strength of the related house and its lords to arrive in to a logical conclusion. This is because house of job/earning does not support the findings of 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] house. However it should be also seen from 8[SUP]th[/SUP] house that whether he is destined to receive any hidden treasures or ancestral property etc. (8[SUP]th[/SUP] house being representing hidden treasures). It is also important to co-relate the results with the corresponding age pattern of the person. Like if we are looking for marriage, the results should be available within the marriageable age like say between 20 or 22 to about 30-33 years of age, otherwise it will be a delayed marriage till say about 40 and could be a no marriage later on like that.... This is the most critical part of analysis and an astrologer has to apply his mind very accurately before arriving in to any conclusion.
 
Now a days it is easy to draw the horoscope once the time, place and date of birth is known, with the help of computers. Software's are easily available in the market for the same. Even though it is important to know the basic mathematics of astrological calculation, how Lagna and other positions of planets are calculated, how balance of Vimshottari Dashas are ascertained etc.. Therefore, the first and foremost we need to calculate the birth Lagna. For this we depend on a book called "Table of Ascendants" which is easily available in the market with any book seller who sells astrological books. Now applying the following with the help of the "Table of ascendants, we can easily calculate the Lagna of birth and other details.


 
For calculating details of a birth took place in India, provided we have time, place and date:-

Find out the Longitude, Latitude, LM (local mean time) Correction and ST correction for IST for given Place, (from Page 100-107 of Table of Ascendants)

Find out the Sidereal Time for the year 1990 at 82[SUP]o[/SUP]30’E at 1200 Noon for 1900 for given Date and Month of Birth, (Table 1 of Table of Ascendants)

Add/deduct correction for Birth Year (Table 2 of Table of Ascendants)

Add/deduct ST (siderial time ) correction for IST for Place of Birth (Page 100-107 of Table of Ascendants)

Let the sum of above asbe mentioned as “A”, which will be the ST(siderial time) at Birth at Noon (for given place, date and year of birth)

Take the IST of Birth (as given in Problem).

Add/deduct LM Correction for IST (Page 100-107 of Table of Ascendants)

If the time arrived at in (h) is a.m. time, then deduct from 12-00 Hrs; if the time arrived at in (h) is p.m. time, then take the time over and above 12-00 Hrs.

Add Correction to Increase Time Interval for time arrived at (i) (see Table IV of Table of Ascendants)

This Corrected Time Interval be called as “B”, which is equivalent to Local Birth Time at given place.

If “B” falls after Noon, then add the difference from Noon to “A” (i.e. if B is 14.30 or 2.30 p.m. add 2.30 to ‘A’.)

If “B” falls before Noon, then deduct “B” from “A”, i.e. if B is 10.30 a.m. then deduct 10.30 from ‘A’.

A+B or A—B is the Sidereal Time (ST) at Birth.
 
Now calculate the Ascendant. For this take the Latitude of the Place of Birth and go to appropriate table of Table of Ascendants.

From this take the latitudes relevant or near to the ST of Birth.

Find the difference in Longitudes between two given times and work out the relevant movement of Longitude for the given time.

Add/deduct the difference in time to the relevant longitude to ascertain the Longitude at Birth Time.

For this longitude, make Ayanamsa Correction (for the Birth Year) (Table 6 of Table of Ascendants).

Figure arrived at is the Ascendant/Lagna at Birth.


 
2. FOR BIRTH OUT SIDE INDIA:

1. Note down Place, Date and Time of Birth and identify the country.

2. Take Latitude, Longitude, LMT from ZST and IST from ZST for the given place (from Page 109-111 of Table of Ascendants)

3. Find whether the Date and Time of Birth falls in the categories of Daylight Saving Time (in US), Summer Time (Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Russia, UK, European countries etc.)

4. If the given time or recorded time is Daylight Saving or Summer Time, then correct the same to make it the actual Zonal Time (ZST) or Local Time. (check from Page 162-163 of Indian Ephemeris)

5. Calculate “A” as in Local Birth.

6. Calculate “B”, as under:

· Take ZST of Birth Time;
· Make LMT correction (Page 109-111 of Table of Ascendants);
· Make correction to increase time interval (as in Local Birth;
· Add Correction to Increase Time Interval for time arrived (see Table IV of Table of Ascendants);

7. Remaining procedure as in Local Birth.
