# 26. Old is gold!
My father was a G.P in a village. He knew everything in his profession! He would assist delivering the babies, he would extract the painful tooth, perform minor operations and administer anesthetics during the major surgeries performed by the local surgeon.
He had a micro mini lab and would perform the necessary tests there. He was available for the public round the clock. He would go in his own car to the house of the patients. I have heard about some other doctors who used to treat the patients for a peanut - that too when given voluntarily.
Money was not the criterion. They had not lost the spirit to serve. They adhered to the Hippocrates' oath they had taken long ago!
They would diagnose from the color of the eyes, tongue and the nails. My father used to surprise the specialists in Coimbatore with his perfect diagnosis - even when no special investigations had been done.
He kept himself abreast with the latest developments in medicine by studying the medical journals. He himself said that he was taught to diagnose by selection and not by elimination.
Now for a common head-ache resulting from lack of sleep people are advised to get scanned. "Just to make sure that nothing is wrong..." is the expression used.
Is there no other way to make sure of that fact? But I won't blame them . They have to recover the money spent on all the fancy gadgets they have purchased. Isn't it?
The spirit of service has vaporised completely. Even for a simple blood test, we have to pay the money first and then give the sample of blood.
When my mother had her shoulder dislocated they wanted to test for AIDS in a ~ 85 year old brahmin lady!
It is the routine. Yes! everything has become a routine with neither sense nor sensibility nor sensitivity.
