Racism in the west - why so many Indians, minorities, etc.face it regularly & still live with it?

Clearly racism in the USA/Europe is making waves of news all over the world specially after the Ferguson riots !!

Every Indian, I have spoken to in the west speaks eloquently about the bad racism that exists in the west, they talk about it, they write about it in multitude of the forums, they cry about it. Indian & minority kids face racism, bullying in schools after schools in west. Indians talk openly about it when we discuss political issues.

When I say, I support the republican position coz of my predisposition for free market enterprise as against a big govt, they are aghast, saying how can you support these racists. It is not a policy, ideological debate, it comes down to racism.

Still they don’t do anything about it. When I ask them why don’t you relocate back to India, they will give umpteen no of reasons, ranging from traffic, chaotic conditions, lack of top quality healthcare (despite many westerns coming to Bangalore/Chennai for major transplants), working for an Indian Boss.. LOL, etc…

They don’t want to come back, yet they crib crib about racism in every conversation. They support the democrats because the republicans are anti-immigrants & racist, not based on policy, meritocracy etc..

So why do so many Indians tolerate racism, put their kids through this mess? To me it all boils down to massive inferiority complex ingrained in our people. Colonial conquests in the historical past has left a massive negative imprint on our people’s mind.

They desperately want the Whites to accept them, thousands of articles penned on western newspapers, talking about how whites can never understand racism. How the whites should be very sensitive while talking to the African Americans, Indians etc…

When I meet anyone, they say, we have invited a white family for dinner etc… that is the most important achievement for these people .As I said earlier, marrying a white girl or boy is the “crowning achievement”for these people… yet in private, they will keep cribbing about racism.

Why the hell do we care about whether they understand racism or not. why the hell should we care about the white approval ?. why the hell do we care about what they even think in the first place ?, why the hell do we even bother about this white crap…

I frankly don’t give a crap what anyone calls me. They can call me anything for all I care. Only thing is, if anyone calls me names, I will retort with equally colorful names… that’s it. Beyond that I don’t care…

I was with my friend debating the very issue in one of the Indian restaurants in the west & a white man walked in & sat next to us. My friend despite all the issues he raised about racism, smiled at him & welcomed him. I simply ordered the waiter to shift us out of that seat away from that white man. Our hero white man face went red & was stunned for sometime..

So all it takes is to be confident & superior in our own race, culture, tradition & just reverse the treatment & give it back. Of course most importantly, get back to our country & build a great nation like how the Japanese have done instead of living as a second, third class citizen in some crap country. I have always admired the Japanese feeling of superiority over the entire world. Whites take coaching lesson on how to respect the sensibilities of the Japanese before they travel there !!

Dear Jaykay ji,

I was once in an Ashram in India and for a moment the crowd was totally out of control and the crowd was asked to wait till a proper path was cleared.

But the local Indians were not listening..they were pushing like mad and some were even causing others to fall.

The Western devotees were not pushing and neither were the Indians from other countries pushing.

One white guy standing near me told me this "These Indians are animals..which country are you from? I am sure you are not from India. Even though you look Indian you do not behave like these animals."

Now I was shocked to hear him be so harsh ..calling the local Indians animals!

I know that he was mad that the local were pushing almost causing a stampede but I did not think he should have called them animals.

I told him "I think the locals lack exposure to crowd control..I wont feel like calling anyone animals"

He then smiled at me.

So what do you say?? Was he a racist?

Hi Renuka,

I would told the white fellow – I don’t give a crap whatyou think, just shove it up your. crap.. with some excellent expletives. LOL !Nobody asked him to come to India.. so who cares what he thinks.

Yes this would fall under racism. But unless we giveimportance to it, it is another facet of life.

See, by constantly hampering on racism, the Africans/Indiansetc.. have unwittingly given the whites a very powerful weapon to beat themwith. So they use it very effectively.. they know the Indians want theirapproval, they desperately seek their approval etc…

Cheers,

Dear Jaykay,

That was just one episode I had where a person openly displayed his racism.

But otherwise I am not complaining as much becos this time when I went alone to India last month..I was struggling to put my bag on my trolley and it was a white guy from another flight waiting for his bag who came up to me to help me with a smile.

Many a times I have been a lone traveler and its almost always a white male(that too good looking ones) who come to help out.

So I guess not all are racists too.

Nobody is saying all are bad. I have not lived abroad, soI don’t know the extent.

However from the loud noise made by the minorities/Indians,racism seems widespread in the west.

My point is why are we so desperate for their approval?

Pl don’t take me wrong – you felt it was important tohighlight how a white man helped you, but what about our Indians who havehelped so many of us ???? why are we not talking about it?

I am saying, we need to get away from the white focus, forget them completely. Do we talk about a Chinese or Singaporean or Malaysianlike this?

Talk about our people, our culture, traditions etc…

By the way, my friend who saw me ordering the waiter toshift out of that seat, is still very upset with me. This is like the Stockholmsyndrome, in time, people love the terrorists despite the terrible treatment!!!

dear JK,

In India I have never been helped by any educated Indian male when I am struggling to load the trolley.
Its not easy to place a heavy bag all alone on a trolley.

It has always been whites that help.

You know when we walk and we open a door its common courtesy to hold the door if there is a person behind you and you let him or her take over the door as you walk.

But in India no one knows this..they just leave the door as they walk and at times it can slam at your face!LOL

BTW you think only whites are racists? You would be shocked to know that how many other races are racists too.

Oriental races are obsessed with skin color and they call everyone darker than them black and they suck up to the whites!

You are right about the east always wanting western approval.

I will give you an example..Yesterday I had a conversation with a person from India (he works here) whom I deal with in placing order for medication.
He is from Tamil Nadu and he told me that he feels Indians in Malaysia do not follow culture as much.

And I asked him why he was saying that.

He said "Malaysian Indians seem to be very friendly with the police and you all have no problems walking into a police station to make reports etc"

I said"thats what the police is for..to help us..so why fear them?"

He said in India its considered bad luck to go to a Police Station so when one comes home after making any report ..one needs to take a bath outside the house to make sure the bad luck does not follow us.

He then said in Msia you all just walked back into homes bravely..not observing the culture of treating Police station as bad luck.

I was what?? The police station is not a cremation ground..why be so scared.

Then he said 'doc..now even the west is following our Hindu tradition..so it must be right"

Then I told him "why do you need approval from the west if you feel you are right?"

Then he fell silent.

In india, men & women are not encouraged to mingle with each other culturally & traditionally. so even when they see a woman struggling & want to help, they will hesitate. Similarly, opening the door for a Lady is a western culture, why should the Indians know about western culture ?. so what if they don't know ?. Do the west learn about eastern culture & criticize themselves if they don't know ?. so why should we criticize our own people because they don't know to open the door for a lady?????????????? Skin color obsession is more due to the colonial impact & many rushed to the USA/Europe thinking they will welcome them with open arms. Now the entire world knows the level of racism, the skin color obsession is slowing going. It till take sometime, but for sure, it is going away... finally our people will be freed of this white skin crap...

there are TB indians in America who sermonise TBs In india how to eradicate casteism in india. their own children opt for whites for marriage considering it their highest achievement

These ape the western way of living and are second class citizen there looking upto white skinned there, They look down on Indian TBs in india and start preaching to them

and give them unwarranted advice on various matters imagining themselves to be superior to anyone in india.

they turn me totally off.

I know a few tambrams in the U S of A who frantically try to get matches for their son / daughter from tambrams ONLY!

But, when they happen to get whites as son in law / daughter in law, they sing a different tune!

After reading the comments/ criticism about Indians & westerners, I would like to give out my cosidered reality, having travelled to U.S 3/4 times as a Sr citizen.
First & foremost , our children, have been willingly sent by the Parents of T. brahmins, mainly for higher studies . They are mostly NOVICE to U. S. culture, besides these Young men & women would know their own culture , mostly based on their practical life in their homes in India , brought up by their parents. We can easily understand that this lot of Students flock together wherever they live/ Study, get co-operation & assistance in all matters , because there are plenty of Seniors who had completed the studies , would have been employed gainfully . So, their mind is preoccupied till they secure Jobs, get married, During those few years the interaction would be wonderful with their western colleagues .
This lot is growing in multiples 7 have made Marks in various / different areas of Technology/ Medicine & in every other field. Because of T.B. proved to be highly intelligent & quite a few have been nominated for highest level positions, by the OBAMA govt.
They , in the course of living in U.S for a few years they all fall in line & practice good Courtesies in pubic like opening the door for women & holding the same till it is helped to any person in the line,.
But Alas ? when they land here on vacation honestly continue the good practice as a routine , but his stay is longer, he falls in Line with US ?
My experirce of life in T. N. with brahmin Men/ women, I have no hestation to say that All, ,with few excepions are Selfish & do nt care for other fellow Brahmins, even in public functions ? Why So / It is Simple. we are selfish but also shun continued relations with our own people because he is not benefitted, on the other hand, avoid , not get involved in day-today help to each other. It is a known thing :- Brahmins as individuals are selfish/ hard -working / will help others only if he gets some benefits it is their in-born nature which changes
as per different locations/countries.By and large we are much honest and heplful to all wherever we may live.

We TB do not help another person unless asked...Then based on circumstances, situations and current financial position, we offer help or support..But whenever anyone asks for help, I will take a call based on the above and decide

Most of us have come up because of our parents toil, suffering and sacrifice...Most of us have not got help either from Government or the so called philanthropists

As far as public show of help is concerned we should learn to practice some of these gimmicks to stay relevant and to mark our presence

we have the greatest strength . our human resources. we are multiplying faster than the othrs . besides we have more people in the younger age group . as people in

western countries grow older , our young will contribute more and we will catch up sooner than most think

ultimately it is economics

as they say in hindi ' paisa wala sher thagda hota hai' . the moneyed tiger will call the shots.

We Indians boast of a "civilization" which is millennia old and now, we have had freedom and democracy for more than 6 decades which is sufficient for more than two generations to grow up into adulthood under the umbrella of Free Democratic India. Yet India, or even the larger "Bharat" of the vintage glory, has nothing to boast about as achievement either in the scientific field nor in industrial, business or any other field. Our people seem to be ideally suited only for working as factotums for the white man and this is what is currently happening even in the IT industry.

Hence many of our youngsters have consciously chosen to be the tails of the lion rather than be one among the billions of mice squabbling and living in "dog-eat-dog" surroundings here in India even to make an ordinary living. The situation is more pitiable in the case of our Tabra boys (and girls too) because they will not get any good job here easily.

Yes, our people are second-class citizens in the Western countries. Still, they have a better quality of life there than what they would have been able to enjoy here. They should think a little more and stop cribbing about the discrimination against the non-whites which they experience and learn to stoically put up with it. After all, we ourselves practised worse discrimination against a section of our own native brethren, in the fictitious name of caste, untouchability, etc., and it is better to remember that too.

Dear JK,

I was not talking about a man holding a door for a woman..I am talking about the gesture of anyone holding a door for the next person.

For example if I am entering a shop with glass doors and I open the door and there is someone behind me...Its common manners to not just walk away but just hold the door a little till the other person holds it for themselves.

This is done by both men for women and women for men.

Its not western culture..its called common courtesy.

Out here when someone does not do this its considered rude.

sangomji
I beg to disagree with you that our younger generations should put up with discrimination to get a slightly better quality of life abroad

after opening up of economy since 1991, life has changed a lot in india.

indians with enterprise are slowly emerging with better oppurtunities for a good living.

so many startup by indians in various fields are coming up and many are producing goods and services for indian consumption and exports.

youngsters should be encouraged to value themselves and become confident to make a good living based on their talents here

our older generation has paid a heavy price by going abroad and living a life of slavery to white man for a few dollars

the next generation need not do so since times have changed

our youngsters will develop a modern india based on their education, skills and enterprise . a new india will definitely emerge .

india is waiting to take off .

one sees while on holidays indians being enticed to spend in countries like switzerland with huge welcome signs . a lot of indians are figuring in world rich lists

in our lifetime we will see an india free of hunger and wants .

woh suba jaroor aayegi, subah ka intezar kar - [that dawn will come, let us wait for it]

Dear Sangom,

Sorry have to disagree here !.

Today NO one is dependent on govt jobs, so there is NO issue of TBs getting jobs here. I agree, prior to the liberalization era, there was no choice but to migrate abroad for Jobs, today it is not the case.

There is also NO case to stay abroad by saying one will not get jobs back in India. USA/Europe are facing minimal to zero growth, where as India is growing @ 5+ % & all jobs are being outsourced here!

On the point of achievements, every country evolves overtime, our country is evolving very slowly because we preferred reservations over merit unlike Japan & Germany who rebuilt their countries from utter destruction to global powers today!

Who would have thought TBs or South Indians will become entrepreneurs in such vast numbers? So in time, people here will also move into scientific research & do well there as well. It is all about financial stability, if the family is very well off, then they will allow their kids to choose a career f their choice; otherwise they will force them to become engineers or doctors.

So there is NO reason why our people in todays world should live like second class, third class citizens suffering innumerable racist abuses !!

Cheers,

we are all people in a hurry

Rudeness be damned.

do you know how many get bashed up due to road rage when they do not give way to fast movers in cars.

when I first learnt driving , I was taught to look ahead and drive and leave it to the judgement of those behind to not bang into you

we cannot keep looking behind and holding doors for those behind . those behind also have hands ,they can use them to shield themselves if required . courtesy be damned

Renuka - In a country with 600 to 800 mil poor, we cannot expect all people to be educated enough to follow common courtesies. In the major cities, you can see, "many" people following rules, being courteous, etc.. Pl watch the old wild west stories & movies where the so called white heroes fought among themselves like animals & dogs !!!

when people are dying of hunger, I don't think they will have time for common courtesies !!! This is what all races did when they were struggling. Nothing great about any of them !!!

Sangomji,

I have quite a few Tabra friends in the Indian IT behemoths...When you are a Team leader or Service delivery leader, you may have whites as employees..You can order those guys and literally lord over them...They will eat out of you..Indians have a merry time in such situations..

Yes, we have not grown beyond coding..We do not have a home grown product that can compete against a Microsoft or Google or IBM or Samsung

But soon we should be able to build the product eco system which Nasscom is working hard to develop

There are may start ups where Tabras are the leaders and are thriving..There are 100's of new opportunities that are coming up..In the knowledge based outsourcing industry why Tabras alone, Indians are capable of giving a tough fight based on our capabilities

Just now I was at a shopping mall and I was using the elevator and I had to push a trolley and a man pressed the lift door button for hold till I was out fully.

This is just common manners yaar.

All of us do this when we see others with trolleys and with babies..we press the elevator buttons for them and ask them which floor they want to go too and press the buttons for them if they are having kids.

Waiting for others to cross roads at the Zebra crossing.

This comes naturally..what is so hard being nice to others?

There is no excuse for not knowing this...even the lesser educated contract workers from India have learnt all these manners here.

In 1900's Indian were only coders. That has changed over period of time. Some of the people in India only know Indian coolies.

According to the 2010 U.S. Census, Indian Americans had the highest household income of all ethnic groups in the United States.
According to the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin, there are close to 35,000 Indian American doctors.

Among Indian Americans, 72.3% participate in the U.S. work force, of which 57.7% are employed in managerial and professional specialties. As of 2010 66.3% of Indian Americans are employed in select professional and managerial specialties compared with the national average of 35.9%.
In 2002, there were over 223,000 Asian Indian-owned firms in the U.S., employing more than 610,000 workers, and generating more than $88 billion in revenue.
Asian Indians are the richest ethnic minority group in the US. Almost 67% of all adult Asian Indians in the US have a graduate and higher degree. It is estimated that about one third of the engineers in California's Silicon Valley are of Asian Indian origin. They are engineers and medical doctors, professors and entrepreneurs, venture capitalists and CEO's. Indian Americans (or Asian Indians, as they are often called) are an incredible success story in the U.S., and their impact on the social, economic, and cultural life of greater Boston has been significant.

The American-born Indian-American generation is having its own impact as it reaches adulthood. "Often they identify as South Asian and not as Indian," says Ravi Sakhuja. "They are aligning themselves with the American-born children of immigrants from Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. Imagine that. Native Pakistanis and Indians have no dealings with each other, but here their American offspring are friends."
As second generation Indian Americans have claimed their place in the mainstream, they have become more socially and politically involved. Paul Watanabe dates this to the aftermath of 9/11. "There has been a serious degree of introspection in the Indian-American community. The idea that hard work, a good education, substantial income would lead to automatic acceptance was shaken when South Asians were suddenly viewed with suspicion and some, Sikhs in particular, became targets of discrimination." Wanatabe says this has had "a sobering effect" on a community that felt that assimilation would be smooth.
Ravi Sakhuja, the newly elected Lexington school committee member, believes the realization that Asian Indians are not immune to discrimination has fueled political awareness. "I call it the number one political issue for our people," he says. He is a strong believer in political participation, having founded the Indian American Forum for Political Education in 1982. Getting the community involved in the political process has taken time. "Grass grows very slowly," he laughs. But he has high hopes for the American born generation. "I see it in my own children. They are hugely interested in policy and the way you affect change in policy is through politics."
Sakhuja believes that Asian Indians have "a lot to add to the American dialogue. We come ourselves from a very diverse society. We also place a premium on education and want to make sure that children in America receive a quality education." And for him personally, he is grateful for the opportunity to give something back "to the country that has been great to me."

Indian Americans – A Story of Achievement

Asian Indian Americans – A Story Of Achievement
• There are now more than 2.15 million peoples of Indian origin in America. They reflect the multi-ethnic, multi-religious and multi-lingual society of India.
• Indian Americans are represented in many fields including academics and entrepreneurs, doctors and lawyers, engineers and financiers.
• According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Indian American median family income is $61,322 as against the national median family income of $41, 994. The high income clearly reflects the advanced educational levels achieved by the community.
• More than 85% of Indians in America have completed high school while at least 62% have some college education. As much as 61% of Indian Americans over the age of 25 hold a bachelor's degree or higher.
• High levels of education have also enabled Indian Americans to become a productive segment of the U. S. population, with 72.3% participating in the work force.
• Of these work force participants, 57.7% are employed in managerial and professional specialties.
• Technical, sales, and administrative support occupations constitute another 29.8% of the work force.
• The remaining 12.5% of the population works in other areas, such as operators, fabricators, laborers and precision production.
• More than 5,000 Indian Americans today serve as faculty members in institutions of higher education in the U. S.
• About 300,000 Indian Americans work in technology firms in California’s Silicon Valley. They account for more than 15% of high-tech startups in that region. The median income of Indian Americans in that region is estimated to be $125,000 (average $200,000) a year.
• Two Indian Americans - Har Gobind Khorana of Massachusetts Institute of Technology and late Subrahmanyan Chandrashekhar of University of Chicago - have been awarded the Nobel Prize, in medicine and physics respectively.
• In deed, the NASA's premier X-ray observatory was named the Chandra X-ray Observatory in honor of the late Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar. Known to the world as Chandra, he was widely regarded as one of the foremost astrophysicists of the twentieth century. The observatory was launched into space in July 1999.
• Late Dr. Kalpana Chawla added a new chapter to the history of the Indian American community. In 1997, She became the first Indian or Indian American to fly in the US space shuttle. She was part of the Space Shuttle Columbia Flight STS-87.
• The estimated annual buying power of Indian Americans in the United States is around $ 20 billion.
• Indian Americans are increasingly beginning to take a more direct role in political activities. They have traditionally exercised the most political influence through their campaign contributions, and are actively involved in fundraising efforts for political candidates on the federal, state and local levels.
• As a result of these activities, together with the growing commercial interest in investment in India, the India caucus in the House of Representatives now numbers 118.

If you have a closed mind one can not be educated.
