*MY FAVOURITE SINGER DR. SIRKAZHI GOVINDARAJAN.

The small town has its credit on Jan 19,1933 by giving the unparalleled singer... Yes. Sirkazhi Govindarajan was born at Sirkazlhi in Tanjore Dt.The proud parents Siva Chidambaram and Avayambal Ammal brought up their prodigy child with love and affection. An interesting story behind this town is that, one of the Samaya Nalvar Thirugnasambandar’s birth places is this and our child prodigy performing at the Tirupurasundari Temple, at the age of eight on the occasion of the Gnana Paal Festival.

He had his primary education in Vani Vilas School at Sirkalzhi… In the early stage, his favorite songs are Dhiyanamey Enathu-Vathanamey Chandra Bhimbamey by Thiyaga Raja Bahavadhar and Enathamarai Mugamey by P.U. Chinappa . He also liked the song, Kodaiyiley Ilaipaari by L.G.Kitappa.

At then, so many drama theatres were in Tamil Nadu. Madurai Thathuva Meenalochini Vidva Bala Sabha,Madurai Bala Meenaranjani Sangeetha Sabha,Madurai Sri Bala Shanmuganantha Sabha , Sri Paramanantha Baskara Original Boys Company and Devi Nataka Sabha. All these are active professional companies. He first joined Devi Nataka Sabha as a child Actor. Then he joined in Boys Company.

His first cinema career was started in the year 1953. 'Ponvayal’ was the very first movie which he had sung the song ’Siriputhan Vruguthaiya’.But ,‘Avaiyar’ the movie came from Gemini had the presidential.

Even, before the movie Ponvayal he had sung the song Athichoodi in the film Avaiyar. But, his name was not found in the title... The movie Thirumalai Thenkumari was a mile stone in his cine life. This movie won the best Tamil Film Award -1971.
His favorite ragas are Lathangi,Kalyani and Shankaraparnam.

Sirkazhi was honored by Kanchi Maha Periyavar as ‘Kambeera Gana Mani’ in the Hindu World Coference.

He, was gifted with his wife Sulochana who was a teacher... He married her in the year 1953. She nursed the family with great care. She rendered her service to uplift the family, in the musical field... Variyar swamigal praised the family as that this family is a lovable, Obedience and culture.

Though the Pallavas ruled South India 700 years, this is hard to trace out their origin. They had established themselves as a notable rising power in the region between 275 CE – 350 CE. We have come to conclusion about their history only in vague formats. Here with humble I have try to give only the outline of their history with my available materials.

The following chronology is accumulated from the three characters:

Simhavarman I 275-300 CE Simhavarman II 436- 460 CE
Skandavarman Skandavarman IV 460-480 CE
Vishnugopa 350 CE Nandivarman I 480-510 CE
Kumaravishnu I 350- 370 CE Kumaravisnu II 510-540 CE
Skandavarman II 370-385 CE Buddhavarman 530-540 CE
Skandavarman III 400- 436 CE Simhavarman III 550-560 CE

Pallavas flourished South India from A.D. 400 to A.D.1000.Say from the beginning of the fourth century; they have contributed various arts and architectures to the nation. This dynasty has an important role in the history. It has many vital turning points.

There is lot of controversies over the origin of the Pailavas. Some view that the Pallavas were of Persian origin. Some consider that they were the feudatories of the Satavahanas. There are others, who view that they were the natives of Tondaimandalam.

Is, their origin Srilankan ?

''Tamil literature relates the story of Chola king Killivalavan who moved his capital to Uraiyar after the destruction of the Chola capital of Puhar. Mudaliyar C. Rasanayagam of Colombo claims that Killi Valavan had a liaison with the daughter of Naga king Valaivanam of Manipallavanam (in Jaffna peninsula) in Ceylon. From this union was born a child who was named Tondaiman Ilantirayan whom his father, Killi Valavan, made the ruler of a territory which was named Tondamandlam with capital at Kanchi. It is pointed out that name Pallava derives from the last syllable of Manipallavanam , the land of prince’s mother''.

We have to leave all these controversial to the historians’ decision... Because, it may be affect the main stream of this article. Anyhow, it clearly proofs that this dynasty have observed the Tamil culture.

According to the Karnel Macancy’s notes we came to know that there was a war between Thondaiman Chakravarthy and Visuvasurasan. In this Visuvasurasan succeed Thondaiman Chakravarthy and captured his country. Here after the king Pappa Devan the successor of Visuvasurasan ruled over this country. He grants many gifts to the temples. All, these are founds in copper scripts. Most of the plates are in Pragrutham and Northern languages.

In the earlier stage of Sadhavaganap Perarasar’s rule, all the availed scripts were in the Pragrutha language. All these materials have proofed that they were the chief of the Southern parts of Sadavagana’s dynasty .Then they captured the Aruvavadathalai country and introduced agriculture...

Though this has been taking deviation of the theme of this article, this is an important to know about the Prakrit language… Pragrutham-Prakrit or Pracit became literary language patronized by kings identified with the Kshatriya caste…The earliest extant usage of Prakrit is the corpus of inscriptions of Asoka.

Here after Kanchi, which is prominent in education and arts were there capital. They have called themselves as Pallavas… There is no evidence that these peoples are Bharathvasa Gothirathar. The Thalakunda stone script clearly shows that these descend are Chatriyas.

With the help of their Inscription , the historians were separated their period in three epochs.

1. Early Pallavas
2. Medieval Pallavas
3. Later Pallavas.

Have to see that the renaissance of Hinduism, sculptures and architectures were overlapped its' zenith in the later Pallavas… Later Pallavas’ era beginning with the line

Mahendhiravarman I
Narashima Pallavan I alias Mamallan
Narashiman II alias Rajashiman
Nandhivarman

Skandavarman

Simavishnu appears to the first great ruler of the early Pallavas. He extended his dominions from the Krishna in the North to the Pennar in the South… We could not trace out his father's name. Apparently, he is the first king in this dynasty. He performed Ashwameda Yaga.

Mahendravarman I (A.D. 600 AD 630)

He is forerunner of the art of cave temples. Literatures and architectures are well patronized. He proclaimed that he constructed the Mandagapattu cave temple without using the wood, bricks and gypsum mortar. writer He was also a good play writer.

Narasimavarman (A.D.630-A.D.668) He crowned after his father Mahendravarman. As a good wrestler he titled as Mamallan..He conquest Chalukiya king Pulikesi and captured his capital Vadhabi .Because of this victory he praised as Vadhabi Kondan.
Narasimhavarman I is claimed to be one of the Seven Indian kings who never lost on the battlefield to their enemies, the others being Karikala Chola of the Sangam age, Samudragupta, Chandragupta Maurya, Ashoka, Rajaraja Chola I, his great warrior son Rajendra Chola.

Conclusion

For, honoring him the port town is called Mamallapuram.

Some people are wrongly spelled Mahapalipuram instead of Mamallapuram.
To substantiate their stands they are falsely saying the new story of Mahapali King…
Nowhere the name Mahapalipuram finds in the History.

Only the worship of the shore temple not be abundant...May be completed with the worship of the patrons...

Interregnum

Before knowing the interregnum of Cholas we have to know about Kalabhras say in Tamil Kalapirargal...The Historians describe the Kalapirargals’ period, is a darken one.

Kalabrhas captured Velvikkudi from the king Salai Mudu Kudumip Pervazhuthi who is the last emperor in Sangam Age.Because of this victory over the Pandian king; they have ruled Tamilnadu for two hundred years.

(The only sources available to the historians are the jain and buddhist literature. The kalabhras ruled South Indian peninsula for about 300 years which is not a small time from the point of history but the history of this kalabhra period was completely a dark chapter. So the period of kalabhra rule in South Indian history was termed by historians as DARK AGE)

With the only limited sources available to the historians are helping to know that these Kalabhras are patron to the Pali language and the two religions Jain and Budhist were flourished in their period.

They ruled Tamilnadu for three hundred years. (A.D.300-A.D.600)

The inscription founded at Poolankuruchi village near Puthukottai is helping to know the authentically news about Kalabhras. This would be lit a light to the History researches in Tamilnadu. Learnt this inscription age is A.D.442.This is in the name of the king Kochenthan Kootran.

Pandian ukira peruvaluthi ,Cholan Senganan,Cheraman Kokkothaimarban,Kongu Kanaikal Irumporai were the kings who ruled Tamilnadu at the end of Kadaisangam period. Kalapirargal displaced all the three emperors and took reign of their power in Tamilnadu for three hundred years...

Because of this experience, Cholas met a long interval about three hundred years and we didn’t get any least ideas about the Cholas... Pathetically, the Cholas were diminishing in very meager value in, fifth and eighth century and they have lived only at Pazhaiyarai and Uragapuram.

There is no significant identification about the Cholas at the period from the fifth to eighth century. During this period, with pathetically they lived in Palaiyaru and Urugapuram only in meager. Without any glory, they lived in the banks of the Cauvery. Some of them migrated to Karnataka for their livelihood. These Cholas termed as Renanda Cholargal.

Pazhaiyarai

Pazhayarai is the capital city to the Cholas in the early Sangam period. This is the one of the five selective towns where the Chola kings coronation ceremonies were held. In the Pallavas dynasty the Cholas were under kingdoms in Palzhaiyar.Palzhaiyarai was the Second capital city in later Cholas. The palace place is called Cholar Maligai... This would turn as individual town. Rajendra Chola was brought up by his aunty Kundavai Piratiyar in this town.

By Sivashanmugam.

N.B. The first chapter is now ending. All, the entries and data where I could narrate in this article were within my memories of the school and college studies. As, the History is my elective subject in my High School studies will impose to write this article. Of course some paragraphs may be referred from others but it is properly dealt in inverted commas...

Cholas' Tamil Inscription (copper plate)

Better to know about the inscriptions while entering the midlevel period. Because the Chola dynasty has its own lengthy path say from c. 150 CE to 1279 A.D. When comparing to the, in India, Tamilnadu, having an enormous inscriptions.

Professor Hultzsch from the latter part of 1886 when he was appointed Epigraphist to the Government of Madras started a systematic collection of Inscriptions of So...uthern India. The Publication of these documents with texts and translations was taken up simultaneously and the following fascicule of South Indian Inscriptions were issued between the years 1886 and 1903. They included 321 records edited critically and supplied all the material that may be practically necessary for constructing the rough outlines of Chola and Pallava history.

Subramanian Aiyar known as father of Tamil inscriptions. Neelakanda Sasthiri author of Chola History marked in many places in his works from subramanoya Aiyar’s citations... There was confusion when the Sangam Age Prahami inscriptions unearthed. Because, the language were in found is in mixed with Prahirtham and Tamil. But fortunately all the inscriptions were in fifteenth and other centauries in Tamil. Subramanian Aiyar cleared the suspicions that all the inscriptions were found after the fifteenth centuries were in Tamil languages only...

Thank to Mr.K.V. Subramanian Aiyar for an unravel of this confusion.

Medieval Cholas

Vijayalaya Chola
(reign 848 C.E. - 871 C.E)

Creator of the latter Cholas tradition, captured Tanjore from Mutharaiyars in A.D.850. He made Tanjore as his capital. Around 850, Vijayalaya with anonymity takes an opportunity of a conflict between Pallavas and Pandiyas.Thiruppurampayam war which shuffled the entir...e history and flagged to the Cholas dynasty another forthcoming eras. In this war, Vijayalaya Chola , pendragon of Uraiyur supported the Pallava King Aparajithavarman to help him to eradicate the Mutharaiyars and the Pandian Kings. Aparajithavarman cool with this victoria’s allowed to Vijayalaya Cholan to continue as the pendragon and contributed Tanjore along with Uraiyur also.

Being the continues victories in the wars Vijayalaya Colan give repression to the Pallava King with demanding more and more areas ...This would irritate to the Pallavas with their allay supporters of Cholas. The scenes are changed. Now the king Pallava Nandivarman III (c. 846 C.E. – 869 C.E) son of Aprajithavarman wants to curtail the growing influence of the Cholas. Even though the King Vijayalaya is in his allayed supporter he wants to teach a lesson to him.

Aditya I. (Reign 871–907 CE)

He Nandivarman III called upon the Varagunavarman to help suppress Vijayalaya. Varaguna led an expedition into the Chola country. The Pandyan army reached the north bank of the Kaveri near Thanjavur and for a while the Chola revival looked short lived. Vijayalaya, by this time a veteran of many battles, was aging and was an invalid. The crown prince Aditya I took control of the army in the defence of the Chola kingdom. With, the fierce battle which took in the same Thirupurambiyam, were the king Vijayalaya Chola where the supporter to Pallava Aprajithaverman in the past, now turned as his rival. Ironically Aprajithavarman was beheaded by Aditya I in this battle. Vijayalaya was succeeded after his death c 871 C.E. by his son Aditya I.

Worthy to say that this war is the main cause to put an end to the Pallavas ruling in Tamilnadu could rule over five hundred years and to show the way to open the new doors to Cholas' dynasty in forth comin years.

Successor of Madurai (Pandiya Kingdom) and Ezham (Ilangai) termed in Tamil Maduraiyum Elamum Konda Parakesarivarman expanded his dynasty as the northern boundary up to Nellore (Andhra Pradesh).

The following is an inscription of Parantaka from Tiruvorriyur. It is important as it shows that his dominions included regions beyond Thondaimandalam:

‘’..record of the Chola king Maduraikonda Parakesarivarman(Parantaka) dated in his 34th year. Records gift of lamp to the temple of Tiruvorriyur Mahadeva by Maran Parameswaran alias Sembiyan Soliyavarayan of Sirukulattur in Poyyurkurram, a sub-division of Tenkarai-nadu. Refers to a military officer who destroyed Sitpuli and destroyed Nellore.[5]’’

He had a close contact with the Chera and Ganga Kings but the Ganga King was under his control. An embracement with the tributary kings, they gave their whole hearted support to him without any expectations.

He used the war looted money to cover the Chidambaram Natarajas temple roof with the gold. Because of this he titled as Thillaiyambalathhukku pon koorai veiyntha thevan.

He is a devout Saiviate and an author of many endowments. The following Tamil stone inscription proved this. Not only this there are so many inscriptions in the state to proof his bounteousness in the religion...

Eleven names of his wives were found in the inscriptions. From these wives he had five sons including Rajathithan.

Because of the sudden demise of Ganga King he had met many crises from this Kingdom... Rashtrakooda King Krishnan invaded to the southern part...His son Rjathithan was killed in Thakola war by Kanarathevan and the Chola dynasty was bottled-up for some years.

This is rightly to say that the expansion works of the Chola’s dynasty started from the period of Vijayalaya was also continued by Paranthagan 1

History of cholas

During, his rule the Chola dynasty attained its glory and his ruling also praised golden period of Cholas.
The dynasty has got its glory in all rulings, military, architecture, literature and in religion.
He is a gallant warrior withstanding no unmoral captures of other’s country.
It is said that his sword only weighing heavy were lift up by the four men.
He is a gallant warrior but no unmoral capt...ures of other’s country.
Believed that his sword is too heavy to lift and this needs four peoples to lift up.

Thiruvalankatu copper plate inscription describes his first victory like this...

''தென் திசையை நோக்கிய திக்விஜயம் பாண்டிய மன்னன் அமர புஜங்கனை வென்று
கடலினையே அகழியாகக் கொண்டதும் சுடர் விடுகின்ற மதில்களுடன் கூடியதும்
வெற்றித் திருவின் உறைவிடமும் எதிரிகளால் புகமுடியாததுமாகிய விழிங்கத்தை வென்றார்''

Vilzhingam situated at northern part of Travancore. Kanthaloorsalai is a small port town in this part.
Raja Raja Chola defeated Chera and Vilzhingam...
Thus he destroyed the Cheras navy and established his overseas domination.
He established the Chola Empire and unfurled his flag by conquering
the kingdoms of southern India and expanding the Choler Empire as far as in Sri Lanka...
He established Kalinga (Orissa) in the northeast.

After, the victory over the Cheras he issued an order to celebrate his birthday in Sathaya is his birth star.
The Ceylon Island victory is one of the prominent in his book...

There are some events here and there were spread in the History books about the Tamil kings invading in to the Ceylon Island...
We have seen two Tamil Kings were ruled Ceylon in A.D. 188 – A.D.177.

It seems that a Tamil King Elara ruled Ceylon in Sanga ages for forty years.

The Sangam period King Karikalan invaded and succeeded the island King Kayavagu.
But the Ceylon King re invaded to Tamilnadu. So a peace treaty was made between the two Kings.
These all shows that the Tamil Kings could establish their domination only some parts and it merely Kingdoms.

But Raja Raja Chola put all together under the one roof and established a dynasty in overseas.

HISTORY OF CHOLAS

Vengi war: The Chalukya dynasty was an Indian royal dynasty that ruled large parts of southern and central India between the 6th and the 12th centuries.
With, the personal enmities they draw a line between them and very often, took hostilities.

Kilai Chalukkiya the branch of Melai Chalukiya ruled the parts between Krishna and Godavari rivers.

With, noticing the growing influence of the both Chalukiya dynasties in the central and southern parts of India Raja Raja Cholan get worried of them.
He worried about this Chalukiyas who destroyed the Palava dynasty now this time extent their boundaries to the borders of
Tamilnadu can easily intrude in to the Tamilnadu.

Because of the invading Melai Chalukiyas, King Sakthi Varman Kilai Chalukiya approached Raja Raja Cholan and asked his help in this critical juncture.
Help of the Raja Raja Cholan to Kilai Chalukiyas to curtailed the advance of Melai Chalukiyas turned in favors of Raja Raja as the fruit slipped in to the milk.
The help turned favor to them to dominate the Kilai Chalukiyas regions

For, the longtime Melai Chalukiyas were dwelled as slavery under the Rastragoodas.
They got freedom with the help of the Clukiya Kings Thailappan II and his son Sathiyasryan.
Formed some boundaries for them and this was called Vengi.

Introduction

We have evidence of Tamils contact with the Romans and even Americans from the earliest period. But we don’t have memories of Tamil settlements in these countries during the ancient period. Scholars also infer that the imperial Cholas of the later days must have travelled as for as Mexico. However on the basis of dependable evidence we can say that large scale Tamil migration to African, West-Indian Ocean islands began to take place only in the 19th century.

The following chat clearly shows the countries supplied by total Emigration from Madras Presidency.

To Mauritius Bourbon (Reunion) 1874 -75 : 5,844
,, Ceylon--------------------------------------------: 17,227
,, British Burmah---------------------------------: 264
,, West Indies--------------------------------------: 3,043
,, Other places ------------------------------------: 3,614

With pitiable that all these migrate are lost their identity except Ceylon.

Interestingly seen, now after two centuries this chat is increasing as on dated 31 Mar 2011, say up to 80,000 H-1B visas alone. Under, the H-1B cap, U.S. Companies selected our youths for skilled works.

Unfortunately, these migrates were attracted by the life style and mounting salaries of this country. In this, no parents are kept away from this theory. As, the head of the family it is common to give better chances to give their kids. But they didn’t or doesn’t think about the demerits of this life. The main reason of not caring about the other aspects is that their kids yearnings are lot.

However, some parents worried about their kids who are residing in U.S.A. This applied to Europe, Gulf and African countries.
This is an important thing, to know the categories of visas.

American Government issues visas in various categories like Tourist visa, H1B and L-1 visa. Apart from this lot of higher study visas are given by the U.S.A. Here, there are no problems in the L-1 visa holders, because their companies took all responsibilities. They could not stay long term in this country.

Until these, problems are not arising to their parents. Whenever their kids or one of the family members induced or advised to stay or get P.R. the problems will begin.

In, the H1B cap there some risks meanly about their future. When compare to others these Peoples gets the P.R. easily, say within five to seven years. After, getting the P.R. they tried to bring up their kids in the western styles. This will damage their families and ours culture.

All parents having the confidence to them. They have trust upon the kids that he or she is not going out of culture. This may be true because they have brought up in Indian soil. But the question arises about their hereditary. This is really tough to the green card holders to brought their children as in Indian culture. What they are going to do? Are they going to allow the hardship to their native the way of settling in these brain drain country ?

Conclusion.

Obviously, one of my two sons is in U.S. as senior software consultant in Deloitte. Six years back at the beginning when he started his service it gives very pleasant to me. But after the first grand-daughter born we feel some pain in our hearts. While, thinking about our grand-daughter's future we have fear. Because, that situation is not well to her. In this circumstances what we are going to do?

I am leaving an unanswered questions before me with in the hope, may find solutions for this in the future.
