Idol worship is an accepted way of worship in Hinduism and this is viewed as a sin and idiocy by the Christians and the muslims. According to them, Hindus are barbarous because they worship stones. Already Vivekananda had given a fitting reply to them, but prejudices die hard. Man lives on symbols. Language is symbolic of the thoughts and emotions in man. Certain gestures like smiling, laughing and crying are symbolic of the feelings in man. The alphabets that we use in a language are all symbolic. For example if you write the alphabet "a", it does not make any sound but you have given it a sound to convey. So for a particular sound, you are giving a symbol which you call alphabet. Similarly mathematics is full of symbols which represent certain laws of nature. A nation has a flag which is nothing but a cloth with a symbol marked for which you expect the whole nation to show honour. Similarly music is a symbol of happiness, gratitude, grief and so on and a national anthem is after all
a song expressing certain feelings of greatness and pride that one feels about his or her nation, the respect for which you show by standing and repeating those lines. If this is not symbolic of the respect that we show, what else is it? In chemistry, all elements are symbolised. When you write "O2" we know it stands for Oxygen and for its entire properties. What about the name of a person? If it is not symbolic, what else is it? Otherwise even to identify a known person you have to describe his features of draw the sketch of the person, which practice is followed to catch culprits in certain crimes. Thus life is full of symbols. The most easily comprehensible symbol for man from days yore has been pictures. When there was no paper and pencil, the early man used to carve figures on stones. For most people, it is very difficult to imagine something that has no shape, colour or qualities. How to imagine that? Man being the highest among creations, he would like to depict God with superior qualities and represented Him in the human frame with certain extra features to depict His superiority. When a man worships an idol, it is only an idiot who will think that he is worshipping a stone. When we go to a temple, you do not go there with the idea of seeing and worshipping a stone. As the saying goes, the man who sees God does not see it as a stone and the one who sees it as a stone does not see the God in it. In this form of worship, he feels nearer to God. It is a respect that he shows to God in his own simple way. I don't understand what is objectionable to it. I also do not understand how the non idolators worship the supreme being. Is it by closing their eyes and concentrating on the Supreme being? They also do it symbolically. When there is an idol of your faith before you, you get better concentration, which you cannot deny. Doing Namas by bending or worshipping by raising your hands and touching your head and heart are also as much symbolic as the Hindu way of worshipping. When no Hindu finds fault with the way of worship of others, it is nothing but extreme prejudice and stupidity to find fault with Hindus for idolatry. I can keep on elaborating and giving examples, but I feel this is enough. Various Gods do not also mean varying Gods, but only the different manifestations of the same God. Even Hindu religion talks of only one Supreme being and all scriptures have defined God as formless, above qualities and in short indefinable without a beginning or end.
But it is the an ultimate stage of realisation and the idol worship is but the initial step leading to that evolved stage. A religion should teach to respect others and that which preaches intolerance and hatred to others is irreligion
