High BP means a boy?

A study was recently published in the journal of American Journal of Hypertension. Researchers from Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto found that those with lower blood pressure tended to have a girl, while higher blood pressure was an indication that a boy was more likely to be conceived.

"A woman's blood pressure before pregnancy is a previously unrecognised factor that is associated with her likelihood of delivering a boy or a girl," said a researcher Dr. Ravi Retnakaran.

A high BP is an indication of a boy which indirectly means boys are likely to cause even before birth high BP among the family members.

So hereafter ladies would like to maintain high BP to prevent her in laws from getting high BP

Indian civilisation, the oldest

Civilisation is more external or outward, while culture is more inward and pertains to the development of inner self and pertains to the mind and heart, religion and spitrituality. Our civilisation and culture are one of the oldest in the world, but the westerners out of their sheer prejudice and ignorance refused to give India its due recognition. Presently my reference to civilisation here includes the spiritual development as well. Only within the past one century they showed some interest to know more fully about India, its civilisation and culture. The Indus valley civilisation is said to be three thousand five hundred years old. But today, there is a conclusive proof that our civilisation is more than 8000 years old. According to Vedic Astrology, it is even much older, in fact the oldest. The great civilisations of Euphratis- Nigris of Iraq and the Nile civilisation of Egypt are dated much earlier than Indian civilisation which according to latest research is found to be misleading. It is claimed that nomads from central Russia came to India, occupied the North and drove the natives from there to the South some three thousand five hundred years ago. This imaginary story is the basis of the Aryan invasion theory . If they are nomads who were only driving cattle, how come they became so highly developed to propound Vedas, Upanishads etc which are even hailed today as the very embodiment of a highly developed culture? How can such great epics like Ramayana with 24000 slokas and Mahabharata with 100,000 slokas would have come into existence, if they were so barbaric? Definitely a barbaric race could not have evolved into a highly cultured one within a few thousand years of their arrival here. To achieve a standard as high as this it must have taken several thousand years which fact has conveniently been covered up. As per recent studies, it is said that there was an earlier civilisation much earlier to the Indus valley civilisation which thrived and which spread from here to the various parts of the world including the whole of West Asia, Egypt, Arabia, Europe and as far as South America which fact has been expounded by Kanchi Periyavar and Sivan Sir who in his book on "Enippadigalil Mandhargal"( ஏணிப்படிகளில் மாந்தர்கள்) has referred to this fact. According to them, the Vedic civilisation was the one that prevailed throughout the world with some changes to suit the local conditions. The unfortunate part of it is we don't have recorded evidence of the same and westerners based on the available knowledge have fixed a date very late, totally ignoring the earlier periods. The only two civilisations( and culture) oldest in the world are the Indian and the Chinese which fact has been elaborated in

The book " in search of the first civilisations" by Michel Wood. The book on " Gods,Sages and Kings" by David Frawley gives a detailed account of what I have given in a nutshell above.

Today is the 47th anniversary of our favourite magazine Thuglak. It is a practice all these years to celebrate the magazine's anniversary by Cho by organising a get together of famous politicians and eminent personalities with opposing views expressing their views in a highy dignified manner, something of a rare trait among politicians and ultimately summarising the entire proceedings with his witty and succinct remarks. This year and from now on, we will be missing him. This is an occasion for us to think over the contributions which he has made to Tamil journalism in particular and to Indian journalism in general and to the political culture of the land. His writings should be a beacon light for future writers.

The later civilisations in the West, middle east and Egypt were annihilated by the subsequent civilisations. Christianity and Islam destroyed all those civilisations, as the prime aim of these two religions were and even today are to establish their superiority over other religions and a feeling that other faiths are barbarous. Even today to establish their own faith in the rest of the world, christianity resorts to its power of money which it has looted over centuries from different parts of the world and Islam through force . This they achieved by killing all the so called infidels by employing brute force and expanding their territories. This is exactly what happened in most parts of the world and most of them were forcibly converted to these religions. The destruction of Inka civilisation of South America is a case in point and no mercy was shown and utmost violence and coercion was used in destroying their temples and their culture. At that time India was far more civilised than these barbarians whose main aim was to loot India for its wealth. The moguls came first to India with the same intention and they found the temples of India were all treasure houses of silver, gold, diamond and costly jewellery and hence attacked temples first. The later moguls indulged in annexing Indian territory slowly and started settling down in India. They used their power of coercion and force to convert Hindus into their religious fold. They resorted to attacking all Hindu Temples which were the storehouses of wealth and also the the centres of our religion. Then they started attacking and killing those who opposed them and also resorted to killing Brahmins who in their opinion were the custodians of Hiduism. It is estimated that several thousand temples all over the country were destroyed, lakhs and lakhs of Hindus were killed and about 150,000 Brahmins were gruesomely murdered which continued up to the days of Tipu Sultan. Those who resisted their move were sent to the gallows. But the greatest wonder is that a religion that does not believe in conversion and the one that believes in tolerance and equality of all religions has survived the onslaught of Christianity and Islam and continues to be third largest religion in the world today.

Poor want English taught in state schools from the beginning: govt report

PTI

people from the poorest section of the society feel that English is an avenue for better life and want the government schools to teach this language to their students from the beginning, a Group of Secretaries set up by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said in its report.

This is an irrefutable fact today in our country. Politicians can no more fool people on language issues. Providing a sound footing in English language for children does not tantamount to their neglecting their mother tongue or the state language. It may help to enrich the State languages. Our people have realised the truth, but when will wisdom dawn on politicians, who always have double standards when it comes to educating their children.?

I am not against any religion but I am against forceful conversion of people through coercion and violence. Christianity believed that any nonchristian is a sinner and the only way to salvation for such a person is to embrace Christianity. I had some personal experiences in this regard. Islam considers all the other religionists, particularly the idol worshippers as infidels and it deems it a holy task for every non muslim to be converted into a muslim and the means employed is immaterial. According to them the end justifies the means and the elimination of the infidel either through conversion or through annihilation is justified. In the early centuries Christians believed in conversion through fights and destruction and once, more than half the world came under their control, the task of conversion became very easy. When India was under the control of the British East India Company, they were more interested in exploiting the wealth of our country and left the job of conversion to the missionaries which according to me are not visionaries but விஷ நரிs indulging in proselytisation through enticements and service for the deprived and this continues till date. Having been exploited, most of the deprived Hindus could not resist it and became succumbed to it and got converted to Christianity. The muslims however believe in force and violence to convert people till date in the name of Jihadism which according to them has a religious sanction. The unfortunate caste system and the fatal theory of the Hindus helped both christians and muslims in converting Hindus. And at this point we have to remember that there is no such provision in Hinduism to convert others into its fold. Already Hindu religion is not a monolithic one but a conglomeration of several sects practised by the people at different parts of the country. We all know that we had several sects such as Kaumaram, Ganapathyam, souryam etc which were brought under one umbrella by Adi Shankara and still we have Saivam and Vaishnavam that have been dividing people till recently. In addition to these sects and subsects, we had a caste system which divided us further. It is only during the mogul period, all nonmoguls of India were grouped under a single category under the name of Hindus ( because they didn't know what else to call them) and the Britishers further put their seal of approval on it. So Hinduism is not a religion of any one man or prophet as in the case of most other religions and is a consolidation of the different ways of living of our people within boundaries of the country which covered the whole of present India, Bagladesh, Pakistan and Afganistan. It never tried to convert or change the different tribes living within its borders, but quietly absorbed all those traditions into its fold. That explains the various practices adopted by people of various parts of India including the aborigins. We must remember here that we have not destroyed them nor their faith and it continues till date. With all its weaknesses, this is its true greatness, as the quotation reveals just as that all rivers reach the same ocean, all faiths lead to the same God.( Akasath pathitham thoyam yatha gachathi Sagaram, sarvadeva namaskarahKesavam prathigachathi)

Christians consider everyone a sinner, Muslims consider every other religionist a sinner, but the Hindus respect other religions and believe that every one has divinity in him which lies buried and it is the duty of any and every religion to bring out the godliness in him. Hindu religion again is not a one man religion propounded by a single prophet. It is a conglomeration of the various sects spread all over greater India in the olden days. It has permitted all the sects to practice their own faiths in their own way. That explains why there are so many Gods and demigods in our religion. No sect is coerced to believe (in) a particular God. In days yore, long before Christianity or Islam was known to this world, most ancients were only nature worshippers, worshipping nature in the form of several Gods, like for example sun God ( Surya Bagavan), the wind God ( Vayu), the fire God( Agni), the water God ( Varuna) etc besides their own local Gods. Worshipping nature is no sin. Worship is after all a superior way of expressing of our gratitude. ( The Tamil festival pongal and its equivalent Sankaranthi - worshipping sun are recent examples about which we feel justifiably proud and not guilty.

Even today in India, people greet each other with a Namasthe or Vanakkam which is the same term used to worship God.) This was prevalent throughout the world in ancient civilisations such as Egyptian, Mesamatopian , Greek, Roman, Inka etc. In addition most communities had family Gods, land Gods and border Gods, each serving some specific cause of the people. ( Fear of God and fear of nature is present even today in this highly evolved civilisation!). The vedic seers and others who practiced Vedic traditions absorbed the entire system within its fold. It was to this amalgamation, that a common name Hinduism was given by the muslims and the British. Unlike the christians or Muslims, no effort was made at any time by these people here to do away with those who practised different sects. In due course, a thread of commonness was established between the various sects of Hindus and all Gods taken as different manifestations of the one and only supreme being. In this connection I think it won't be out of place to mention the following. It seems MGR wanted to establish a religion known as Dravidian religion. In this regard, the late Paramacharya arranged a personal meet with him and explained to him how Hinduism as we know now is no different from what was practised by the people of this land now claimed to be Dravidam and how it is no different from the rest of the country except for language, how all Hindus of today worship the same Gods throughout India from the extreme North to down South and hence why there was no need to start a new religion. We know that Siva and Muruga are said to be Tamil Gods. But Siva's abode is believed to be Kailas in Himalayas. So there seems to be a sort of an integration done long back. That is the very essence or the spirit of Hindu religion. Hindus do not have any reservation in accepting Christianity or Islam, but the real trouble is from those religions which still treat Hindus as inferior and infidels to be either converted or killed. The humility to which our religion is subjected to in recent days by our politicians and by muslim terrorists is responsible for some Hindus turning to be fundamentalists.

Idol worship is an accepted way of worship in Hinduism and this is viewed as a sin and idiocy by the Christians and the muslims. According to them, Hindus are barbarous because they worship stones. Already Vivekananda had given a fitting reply to them, but prejudices die hard. Man lives on symbols. Language is symbolic of the thoughts and emotions in man. Certain gestures like smiling, laughing and crying are symbolic of the feelings in man. The alphabets that we use in a language are all symbolic. For example if you write the alphabet "a", it does not make any sound but you have given it a sound to convey. So for a particular sound, you are giving a symbol which you call alphabet. Similarly mathematics is full of symbols which represent certain laws of nature. A nation has a flag which is nothing but a cloth with a symbol marked for which you expect the whole nation to show honour. Similarly music is a symbol of happiness, gratitude, grief and so on and a national anthem is after all

a song expressing certain feelings of greatness and pride that one feels about his or her nation, the respect for which you show by standing and repeating those lines. If this is not symbolic of the respect that we show, what else is it? In chemistry, all elements are symbolised. When you write "O2" we know it stands for Oxygen and for its entire properties. What about the name of a person? If it is not symbolic, what else is it? Otherwise even to identify a known person you have to describe his features of draw the sketch of the person, which practice is followed to catch culprits in certain crimes. Thus life is full of symbols. The most easily comprehensible symbol for man from days yore has been pictures. When there was no paper and pencil, the early man used to carve figures on stones. For most people, it is very difficult to imagine something that has no shape, colour or qualities. How to imagine that? Man being the highest among creations, he would like to depict God with superior qualities and represented Him in the human frame with certain extra features to depict His superiority. When a man worships an idol, it is only an idiot who will think that he is worshipping a stone. When we go to a temple, you do not go there with the idea of seeing and worshipping a stone. As the saying goes, the man who sees God does not see it as a stone and the one who sees it as a stone does not see the God in it. In this form of worship, he feels nearer to God. It is a respect that he shows to God in his own simple way. I don't understand what is objectionable to it. I also do not understand how the non idolators worship the supreme being. Is it by closing their eyes and concentrating on the Supreme being? They also do it symbolically. When there is an idol of your faith before you, you get better concentration, which you cannot deny. Doing Namas by bending or worshipping by raising your hands and touching your head and heart are also as much symbolic as the Hindu way of worshipping. When no Hindu finds fault with the way of worship of others, it is nothing but extreme prejudice and stupidity to find fault with Hindus for idolatry. I can keep on elaborating and giving examples, but I feel this is enough. Various Gods do not also mean varying Gods, but only the different manifestations of the same God. Even Hindu religion talks of only one Supreme being and all scriptures have defined God as formless, above qualities and in short indefinable without a beginning or end.

But it is the an ultimate stage of realisation and the idol worship is but the initial step leading to that evolved stage. A religion should teach to respect others and that which preaches intolerance and hatred to others is irreligion

"I adore Indian food and can’t just name one but many Indian dishes that made me fall head over heals in love with these cuisines. I like the extensive use of different spices and aromas that make the food even more delicious. I am personally in love with biryani, chicken korma, gulab jamun, mango lassi, naan, samosa, ras malai, to name a few. Indian food offers unforgettable experiences which are quite similar to the culture; no doubt they serve the best vegetarian dishes in the world. I am a frequent traveller and often visit London just because of the London food market which serves a variety of Indian dishes. All these recipes are mouth-watering and appetising."

While many foreigners love Indian food, it is really unfortunate that many of our youngsters take pride in saying that they don't like Indian food and they love pizzas, burgers and so on. There is nothing wrong in loving a foreign dish, but why at the cost of our Indian dishes? Probably, as in every other case these youngsters are waiting for the foreigners to accept and certify our dishes. This has become the national weakness of our educated class.

Toilets and we

A survey was conducted as part of their School curriculum in association with CARPED, an NGO based in Sangareddy. The data collected by the students shows that in Mahammadnagar panchayat, there are 350 families and only 32 toilets, while in Kannaram, for 200 families there are only about 18 toilets. This was the case in most of the villages surveyed.“Most of the tribals are not using the toilets though they have been constructed by the government owing to lack of water and awareness among them on using a toilet. We need to create awareness among them in this regard. At some places, toilets are being used as storerooms,” Sravanthi, one of the students who was part of the survey, told The Hindu. On the other hand, there are villagers who are not aware of the fact that funds would be sanctioned by the government to construct toilets. Bujjamma, who lives in a thatched hut at Gate tanda in Kowdipally mandal, says she is neither aware of the government scheme, nor knows how to use a toilet. When asked about having a toilet for her own family, she said, “We cannot afford to build a toilet on our own. But if the government extends us financial support, I am ready to use it.” The students also found a bathroom without a roof that was left unused for several months, with creepers covering the entire structure, speaking of lack of follow-up action by the local leaders.

This is the situation from 1950s when special importance was bestowed for toilets and sanitation in our country. As one involved in these studies for over nearly three decades or more, I find the situation with regard to the usage of latrines by tribals and villagers has shown a small increase in percent only, even though today as compared in fifties, the proportion of people OWNING latrines has touched 70% in the country as a whole. Educating the people in this regard is the MOST IMPORTANT aspect of the problem besides providing better water supply facilities.

Students all over Taminadu have on their own accord risen in protest against the ban on jallikattu, unlike the Hindi agitation of the 1966 which was sponsored by DMK. They have also not permitted either political leaders or cine actors to intervene and take the credit. This protest does not seem to be instigated by any political party and hence is most welcome. Make sure no external element stealthily enters your agitation instigating violence. This will teach a fitting lesson to our politicians and cine actors who use such occasions to boost their own image. Well done, my boys. Pl keep up the spirit. Don't succumb to political pressures in future.

The animal welfare organisations, whether PETA or SPCA and the like seem to carry animal welfare too far at the cost of human welfare. Then caging an animal itself amounts to cruelty and on that basis no pets can be allowed to be caged and all zoos should be banned. When killing animals for eating is permitted all the other things fade into insignificance. Why this unnecessary ban for jallikattu which is observed by Tamils who use this occasion to honour the bovines during the Pongal festival celebrated as Mattu Pongal. Do you mean to say that the very people who honour the cows, buffaloes and bulls will encourage a sport that will kill the bovines.
