Unbelievable but true

Warner Chappel Music owns the copyright to the song "Happy Birthday." They make over $1 million in royalties every year from the commercial use of the song.

All babies are colour-blind when they are born.

Each nostril of a human being registers smells in a different way. Smells that are made from the right nostril are more pleasant than the left. However, smells can be detected more accurately when made by the left nostril.

Humans are born with 350 bones in their body, however when a person reaches adulthood they only have 206 bones. This occurs because many of them join together to make a single bone.

May babies are on average 200 grams heavier than babies born in other months.

Half a million elderly suffer extreme loneliness in UK: Report News

This is no more a typical Western problem. Our country is fast moving in this direction and sooner or later we are likely to catch up with or exceed these figures and to be the number one country in isolating elders. The increase in the number of old age homes and retirement colonies are proof enough of the future trend in our country. Joint families are slowly melting away and youngsters feel their elderly parents as an unwanted burden for two reasons, one is for reasons of privacy and the other is for fear of elderly falling sick needing their personal care and attention besides the heavy medical expenditure. This is the price that we pay for our progress and the loss of moral values which we suffer from. Even when they form part of the extended family, they are not treated with due respect but treated as intruders and unwanted guests. I have known cases where the elders seek old age homes in preference to their stay with their own kith and kin. With increase in the number of elders, it is going to be a challenge to the government and to the society itself as felt by the Western countries unless we restore the lost moral values typical of our country.

Now, 'kissing prank' outrages woman's modesty in Delhi

A cranky fellow's video of randomly kissing girls walking in the streets for fun that went viral was condemned by many, while there were some idiotic youngsters who thought that it was a prank meant to be enjoyed. These are the fellows who indulge in stalking, groping, molesting and raping, claiming that these are the traits of manliness. These fellows are responsible for all sorts of sexual assault on women and the society should not be a passive spectator and allow them to go scot free. No mercy should be shown to these human animals. It is one of their tribes some three years back that started kissing in public as if it was an achievement equivalent to one going to moon and ultimately it was proved that the people who started that movement were those who were trafficking in women. It is only people with such bent of mind who indulge in such dirty tricks. They get the inspiration for all these silly things from pictures that depict a promiscuous male as a hero. They should be zeroed in and sent to prisons. In the present case let us make a beginning by not accepting his apology but arrest him and put him behind bars. The best punishment for such morons is to stitch their mouth so that they will never be able to kiss, but our constitution does not provide for that. We have many good things to learn from the west and not fool ourselves copying something that is against our tradition and culture

Now anaemia can protect your kids from malaria

Mosquitos need to suck blood to transmit Malaria. So do naturally they avoid bloodless children?

No. Iron deficiency anaemia actually protects children against the blood-stage of Plasmodium falciparum malaria ( malarial parasite). There seems to be an advantage in every disadvantage!

Speech of Gopala Krishna Gokale in Pachaiyappa's college, in 1904

This speech is relevant for our students even today

"The greatness of England was due to the fact that the average men and women there led more earnest lives, recognised their responsibilities better than we do, endeavoured to prove more serviceable to society than is the case here. It is in the life, thoughts and actions of the average man and woman that the solid strength of a nation really lies. You may not be privileged to make any large contribution to the knowledge by research and scholarship, but every one of you can lead better, more earnest lives on account of the education you have received. If you do that in your persons, you will have set a high example to those who come after you, and you will also have largely added to the moral energy of the nation. I therefore ask you to realise this, that it is in the power of every educated man to show that he is worthy of the education he has received, first by continuing his interest in studies, secondly, by trying to be of service to his countrymen, and thirdly, by leading in his own particular sphere a better, a more earnest, and a more dutiful life.

Jallikattu: TN urges Centre to promulgate ordinance

The problem of Jallikattu rears its head before every Pongal. If anyone says anything against it, he will be dubbed anti tamil. SPCA comes under this category for they are the people fighting for the cause of animals ( at the cost of humans?) This sport is NOT practised throughout Tamilnadu and is confined to a few places in Tamilnadu like Anangaputhur. It is said that jallikattu is the very culture and tradition of Tamils to be observed as part and parcel of the celebration of Pongal. If anybody asks them any inconvenient question, they are only anti Tamils. For the question that bulls are tortured in the process, there is a very strong denial on the plea that the Tamils hold the cows and bulls in high esteem and if you ask why trouble the bulls that you respect so much, you are in trouble. The answer for the question " Is there not a real alternative for jallikattu to prove the valour of Tamils", that valour will be physically proved on you. If anybody raises the question what is the harm in banning it, the reply is what is the harm in practising it. Our ancient literature boasts of a Tamil heroine shooing away a tiger by a mere Muram? Why not play a game like that instead of harming an innocent animal? If you ask this question, you may not be there to ask the next question. So no arguments. If you say many are injured and some killed, why even while travelling by train or bus, many are killed or injured, have the trains and buses been banned is the stock reply. Does anyone have an answer for that? When we allow killing of animals for food, why not allow the bull fight for good. After all if the bull dies or some people die, doesn't matter? Even otherwise are they not dying? If you oppose it, you are doing so at your own peril. The arguments are endless. If you want to be in the good books of the parties in Tamilnadu, better support it or at least keep quiet.

We in the south , particularly Tamilnadu, are used to the white polished rice , even though we use parboiled rice for the preparation of idlies and dosas. Of late brown rice is showing its head here and there now and then. We are familiar with certain varities of rice such as Nellore rice, Samba rice, Jeeraka rice, basumati rice and so on. Still there are many varities of rice which have been there in vogue in our country from time immemorial, which has now given way to the more familiar varities.
The fully polished white rice that we get in the market is not the paddy rice our forefathers ate. They ate the flavourful, hand pounded rices grown locally during season. We have a rich cornucopia of rices ranging from white to red to black to scented rices. What we need to do is to welcome these back into our homes and diets. It is easier said than done, with all of us having become accustomed to fully polished white rice. In States, among Indians, brown rice is becoming popular. Why not try without prejudice the different types of rices and their speciality and suitability for a particular occasion or for a particular preparation which probably has not yet been tried ? It is our prejudice that has killed most other rices. It is time that we give a trial for other varities of rice too to make our culinary art richer and healthier.

Rice to the occasion
This Pongal, celebrate Nature’s bounty by trying out some indigenous varieties of rice.

This is not the first time that India and Indian sentiment are insulted. Many western companies have used the pictures of Indian Gods most inappropriately on several occasions and every time Indians have to raise their voices in loud protest to get the insult annulled. There seems to be scarce regard for the Indian sentiments, why outside India, even within India. We are a nation that respects others sentiments and more so their religious beliefs and we never indulge in misusing our freedom to insult other religionists, but at the same time there is a growing section among our politicians and the so called intellectuals who hurl insult on our faiths, beliefs and Gods day in and day out. The so called self styled secularists, rationalists and the lefts who won't dare open their mouths about other religions, won't miss even a single opportunity to criticise and insult the Hindu feelings as if it is a symbol of their rationality and intelligence. This is very typical of Hindus which is a matter of not only regret but shame. If we respect our religion, will the others dare insult us this way? We have to correct ourselves before we find fault with others? Our tolerance seems to be our weakness that is being exploited alround.

Random thoughts

When it comes to history, we always talk about civilisation. The terms civilisation, civility, civilians, civic sense and perhaps city have a common root. In Sanskrit, we call it " Nagarikam" which itself is a derivative of the term "Nagara" which means city. Nagarasya bhavaha is Nagarikam. That which is the outcome of a city is civilisation or that a city is the outcome of civilisation. We all know that all major early civilisations dawned on river banks. For sustenance of life, the basic requirements are the five elements, the Pancha Bhoothas, Appu, Vayu ,Theyu, Prithvi and Akash. For the survival of any life, these five elements are very essential. In other words they are the elements which are elementary for any form of life. When humans originated, they were first introduced to the Sun, the moon, the water, the air, the soil and the sky. Even with all our modern knowledge and information, the nature around us constituting these five elements baffle us. The first men were really thrilled and they wondered at things happening around them in nature. They started fearing them first and then respecting them realising that a supreme force seems to regulate them. As a matter of gratitude, they started revering and worshipping them. This was the practice in the entire world and all the early civilisations irrespective of wherever they originated, started nature worship and made all these life sustaining things Gods. Whether it is Indian civilisation or, Greek and Roman civilisation or Egyptian or Iraqi or Chinese civilisation, this was the fact and they all worshipped nature as Gods and demi Gods. This practice continued for a very long time and they were all designated as Pagans. While all the other civilisations have been annihilated by the Christian and Islamic onslaught for no reasons other than their ambition to expand their territory and their religion, Chinese and Indian civilisations alone survived. But alas, even the Chinese civilisation has undergone metamorphic changes, thanks to communist onslaught. So the only very ancient civilisation which is still left alive in spite of all so called modernisation is Indian civilisation. They continue to be nature worshippers and greatest environmentalists who respect the basic things in life. While Christianity and Islam spread their tentacles by massacres and forceful conversions of the locals by their brute power on the plea that nature worshippers are pagans who are uncivilised, they could not altogether wipe out the Indian civilisation. Today Christians try to achieve their objective of "Christianisation" of the entire world through their missionaries using the mighty power of wealth that the Christian kingdoms have looted from all over the world, by offering service. Islam still believes in spreading their religion using brute force through "Jihadism". But whether these christian or Islamic forces succeed in decimating Hinduism or not, our own people who call themselves secularists are doing that job right now. So our civilisation is at peril because of these inimical politicians, the communists and our perverted intellectuals. We should not succumb to the western propaganda that we are way underdeveloped in civilisation because of religious practice, but must uphold our religion, the only religion of tolerance and respect to other religions at any cost by making certain corrections needed to cope up with times.

Personally speaking, I am not a great upholder of Jallikattu sports as an inseparable tradition of Tamilnadu. But however, when the majority of the people in Tamilnadu favour it and when animal sacrifice for religious purposes is permitted, I think there is no point in banning Jallikattu. The SC knows pretty well that this sport is associated with Pongal in Tamilnadu and in spite of that It has not cared to spell its decision this way or the other before the due date, thereby creating uncertain situation all over Tamilnadu leading to avoidable law and order problem. My feeling is that it is after all not such a dangerous sport and the SC can enforce certain precautionary conditions to be followed by the organisers and participants that will ensure safety causing the least injury to the bull, the fighters and the general public viewing it. I am not competent to question the view of the SC in this regard, but I think I have the liberty to disagree with its views.

Bogi pollution

Nineteen international and domestic flights to and from Chennai suffered delay on Friday after dense smoke engulfed the airport region here following the burning of old articles on the occasion of Bogi festival.

In spite of repeated requests by the Pollution Control Board of Tamilnadu and many other environmentalists and scientists requesting the public not to burn old tyres and disused materials on the eve of Bogi, the response seems to be next to nil. If compelled, it may lead to spanother problem of law and order. There is no religious dictum that says every old material has to be burnt and disposed of. If people want to dispose of old things, municipality or corporation may arrange to collect these articles through normal channels and may undertske their safe and sanitary disposal? The usual requirement and practice has been to white wash and keep the house and surroundings clean during Ponga. Burning the materials have no religious or traditional sanction. But if people believe that they have a moral right to pollute the atmosphere, they have to either educated or better still punished because nothing teaches better than punishment. Tamils are not willing to improve and the political parties are not willing to cooperate. Habit dies hard and the worse the habits, the harder they stick to us.
