Quota Relook: RSS’s Manmohan Vaidya is right, reservations can’t be permanent

CERTAIN FACTS ARE TABOO IN OUR COUNTRY. MORE SO BEFORE ELECTIONS. THAT MAY COST YOU YOUR ELECTION. OUR POLITICAL PARTIES ARE THE GREATEST HYPOCRITES. THEY ARE NOT WILLING TO LISTEN TO REASON AND THEIR OWN CONSCIENCE AND WHENEVER THEY ARE CAUGHT IN THIS SITUATION, THE EASIEST WAY FOR THEM TO ESCAPE IS BLAMING RSS. IN TAMILNADU, THE EASIEST FOR THE DRAVIDIAN PARTIES TO DO IS TO ATTRIBUTE ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING TO BRAHMINISM. OUR COUNTRY's PARTIES DEPEND ON THESE THINGS FOR THEIR SURVIVAL. THERE IS NO PLACE FOR TRUTH< HONESTY AND COMMON SENSE IN OUR COUNTRY

Manmohan Vaidhya speaks the unwanted and disliked truth at an inappropriate time

RSS spokesperson Manmohan Vaidya created a stir by stating that caste-based quotas were not supposed to be permanent. Responding to a question at the Jaipur Literature Festival, Vaidya justified quotas for scheduled castes and scheduled tribes, but asserted that they could be phased out once the conditions that led to their introduction ceased to exist. This is common sense even if politically incorrect anathema; parties such as Congress, AAP and RJD immediately pounced on Vaidya’s comment to brand RSS and its political offspring BJP as anti-Dalit. It will be recalled that RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat had made a similar remark about reservations in the run-up to the 2015 Bihar polls. And that remark was thought to have contributed to BJP’s subsequent electoral defeat.

This time too Vaidya’s comment about quotas comes just ahead of assembly elections in five states and has RSS engaging in damage control. However, Vaidya – like his RSS boss previously – has a point. Reservations can’t become a permanent device – if they do this would mean that quotas as a tool of social empowerment have failed. We have, today, traditionally well-off communities such as the Patidars in Gujarat and Jats in Haryana demanding reservations.

This race to the bottom is simply untenable. It’s high time other ways of providing equal opportunities and ensuring social justice are devised. The most potent step in this regard would be a combination of universal access and drastically improving quality of school education. Similarly, economic policies that boost the private sector are imperative – government can’t be the primary source of jobs. We need measures that enlarge the education and jobs pie, not just divide them up differently. That’s how all nations have developed historically. India can’t be the exception.

Pepsi and Coca-Cola products may be banned in Tamil Nadu from March 1
DECCAN CHRONICLE.
I have been avoiding these drinks all through the years and even though I am now in States, I don't take them. My reasoning is they are detrimental to health as scientifically established and when safer and better drinks are available, why encourage them? I feel that if people desist from using them, automatically the MNCs will close down their shops. Before banning them, let all Indians, not only Tamils, but all Indians, avoid using them. unfortunately in our country, drinking these have become a status symbol and many elites and better placed individuals who take pleasure in aping the west patronise them. The average Indian or the villager does not patronise these drinks. But the unfortunate fact is that because of the patronage of these MNC drinks by certain sections of students and our society who can afford such things, the local brands of healthy drinks have become things of the past. It is to support the local industry that this move on ban is taken up. In this regard I have to say that more scientific and safe methodologies should be employed in their manufacture and at present it is this aspect that deters our people from using these things with a sense of confidence. So every effort should be made by the government to ensure quality control and safety of our local drinks before banning these MNC drinks

Animal activists vs Pro jellykuttu activists
The pro jellikuttu activists should not view the action of the animal activists as anti Tamils. it is for them now to prove their case in a court of law without resorting to street side agitations. A law that has been questioned has to be tackled legally and it is not for the public to indulge in agitations. calling some one who opposes Jallikakattu names and dubbing him anti Tamil is not the solution to the problem. In fact it will make your case weak and fit to be brushed aside. It won't stand in a court of law. Whether you like it or not, a law has to be respected and if you have reservations about it, it has to be fought in a court of law.

As Donald Trump was sworn in as the 45th President of the United States of India, Melania gave a beaming smile to Donald Trump. However, the smile vanished as soon as the President turned away from her.
Deccan Chronicle
When does Trump become the President of India? How can such a glaring mistake occur in Deccan Chronicle? This is inexcusable.

UK to make spitting a criminal offence. News
What is a national hobby in India is made a criminal offence in UK , indirectly preventing Indians from migrating to England. I think there must be a rally held in India in protest against the British discrimination against Indians, the one field, namely, spitting competition in which I am sure Indians can win a Gold Medal in Olympics (if distance spitting is included as one of the sport items!)

Mathematics is a pleasure for some and a pressure for most. For most of the typical students, it is a nightmare throughout the world. If you develop a love for it, you will conclude that there is nothing more lovable than maths. If the pressure on maths is removed and if made enjoyable, that will be most welcome to many average students,

Wonderful world of mathematics
Any action by the educational authorities to ease the pressure of mathematics is welcome to the typical students and their guardians.

Learn to drink water the proper way. I have seen umpteen number of suggestions of how much, hoe frequently and when and when not to drink water, each contradicting the other. Drink enough water, but nobody can define the term enough. you are your own best judge based on your experience and your system is the best warning bell to decide the quantity of water your body needs. Anything in excess is bad. including water.

Sushma Swaraj offers help to 90-year-old Indian-American with visa issues
PTI
Sushma Swaraj seems to be a unique kind of politician who is very humane and volunteers to help those in distress, both when in power and out of power. This is probably the nth time she has been helping the needy. It is a rare trait among politicians. Hats off to her

Ban on Kambala stays as Karnataka HC to wait for SC's Jallikattu verdict
PTI
Kambakla is the Kannada version of Jallikattu in a slightly modified form where the bull is the hero as in the other case. We still await the SC judgement on the fate of Lallikattu, Kambala and so on. Instead of making much ado about this simple sport, even if SC bans these sports, it is better Parliament passes the bull sports so that it is not necessary for people to agitate every year with no results. The bill can suitably introduce safety features to protect the bull from men and men from bulls. The suspense on this issue is what makes it more dangerous than the game that is supposed to be.

Uproar in TN Assembly after mention of Jayalalithaa's name
PTI
Calling names is wrong. But referring one by his or her name, is it objectionable? It is indeed part of our culture not to call seniors or superiors by name. In this regard we were very much domesticated by the British that we dare not address our superior officers by name by even the one addressing is double his age. But public figures do not fall under this category. They are addressed by name only, and addressing one by his or her name is not derogatory or disrespectful or insulting. It is only in Tamilnadu such slavish mentality of calling leaders and superior officers by their title than by their name prevails. In my official career, I have seen that this is strictly observed in Tamilnadu and not in other states. Opening the car doors of ministers and officials and prostrating before them are typical of Tamilnadu and if anyone objects to that, I am afraid there may be an agitation against that claiming it is the culture of Tamilnadu and such a one may be dubbed anti Tamil. We seem to carry culture too far to the extent of sacrificing our self respect and dignity.

The Minister announced that as many as 500 rail stations will be made differently abled-friendly by providing lifts and escalators

This is a welcome move. Today there is a great risk for elders and disabled to get into and alighting from a train. So the trains also need to be made disabled friendly

New law to confiscate assets of offenders who flee the country. News

This is our national bane. We seem to be more interested in video graphing the incident and presenting it to others or giving it as a scoop to newspapers than go to the rescue of the victim and provide the necessary immediate assistance to the dying person at the golden hour. Everyday we are losing so many lives because of our inhuman attitude. This is deplorable.

I have experienced a fly getting into my ears on two occasions and an insect getting into my ears singing and dancing on a third occasion when I was travelling by night train from Bangalore to Chennai. Both times, my wife gave them relief by carefully taking them out either alive or dead using a closed safety pin. I have seen babies inserting peanut or tamarind nut into their nose and struggling to breathe for the next few hours with the nut travelling inside with the passage of time.
But this is the first time that I hear the news of a cockroach of the size that we normally encounter in our daily life getting into the nostril of a lady and remain there alive playing truant to two hospitals and many doctors. Women who are not afraid of anything including their husband are generally scared of cockroaches and how dare this cockroach got into the nostril, I don't understand. May be it is only a young cockroach yet to grow to the standard size. Usually cockroaches prefer dark damp areas and the inside of the nostril provides probably an ideal habitat for the roach. Winged cockroaches are a terror to children, ladies and grown up men too. They are the worst transmitters of disese in view of their large surface area of contact. But in many orthodox homes there are still people to believe that they are indicators of Laxmi, the Goddess of wealth. Definitely nowadays nobody is happy with a Laxmi of that sort. The one great fact about these roaches is thar even when the whole world is devastated and all life killed in a nuclear holocast, it is the cockroach that will survive. With the underground sewer system, their population has increased many times. They prefer filth, dampness and insanitary conditions and to minimise their hazard, the surest way is to maintain CLEANLINESS.

OIL SPILL. News

For the past few days, oil spill in and near Chennai port is reported and a number of trained men are involved in cleaning up the oil spill. What is so worrisome about oil spill?

Many baby animals and birds starve to death, since their parents cannot detect their natural body scent. Birds that preen themselves to get rid of the oil accidentally swallow the oil and die due to the toxic effects. In many cases, the animals become blind due to repeated exposure to the oil. Dolphins, sea otters, fish, countless species of birds and many oceanic mammals face these consequences. Countering these effects and cleaning the oil can take anywhere between a few weeks to many years, depending on the damage caused.

Effect on Economy: The second major effect of the oil spill is seen on the economy. When precious crude oil or refined petroleum is lost, it effects the amount of petroleum and gas available for use. This means more barrels have to be imported from other countries. Then comes the process of cleaning the oil spill, which requires a lot of financing. Although the company responsible for the oil spills and their effects has to clean it up, there is a lot of government help required at this point.

The workers that are brought on board to clean up the spill face tremendous health problems later in life as well. Their medical treatment has to be paid for and becomes the responsibility of the government. Putting all the methods of recovery into place and monitoring them takes away resources from other more important work and hits the economy in subtle but powerful ways.

So no wonder the government is concerned about oil spill and is tackling the problem on war footing. I hope it will be cleaned within the next few months and the water body and shore line restored to safety.

It is tragic that there must be 1.3 million deaths due to cancer in S East Asia alone, mostly because it couldn't be diagnosed early, the patients ignoring the symptoms in its initial stages allowing it to reach the fourth stage when it becomes next to impossible to save them. I lost my wife to cancer three years back when it was found that she had cancer of the intestine spreading to liver and kidneys. but the problem in her case was that she had no outward symptoms of cancer until it was scanned in the last minute. This was something baffling for the doctors too. She was a staunch anti allopathy lady who was taking only Ayurvedic and Siddha medicines from reputed Vaidhyars in the field for her ailments right from her twenties and the doctors opined that it may be one of the reasons for cancer. It is said that in the case of Sidha medicines, they use heavy metals that might have triggered cancer.

Late diagnosis, treatment of cancer kill 1.3 million in South East
Late diagnosis and treatment is also inflating associated costs and impacting workforce productivity.

The two cargo ships that collided causing this massive oil spill should bear the entire cost of operation of cleaning and the economic damage it has caused to the state. Apart from the marine life. the worst sufferers are the fishermen who solely depend upon fish for their survival. There is a danger of the marine species affected by the oil spill reaching the dining table of many though not in star hotels, in many other middle class and poor class restaurants and road side small vendors and caterers. This is also likely to affect the public who use beaches for recreation purposes. Swimming in the zone should be strictly prevented.

Water and we

Tamilnadu is in an arid zone and has no perennial rivers that originate there. It has to be at the mercy of Rain God and Karnataka. The annual tiff between Karnataka and Tamilnadu has almost become proverbial. There should be a way out of this impasse. Rousing the passions of farmers here and setting them against the farmers of Karnataka will only help to raise temperature on both sides and will not help to solve the issue once for all.The average annual precipitation of Tamilnadu is slightly more than 100 cms., which is unevenly distributed and if this could be channelised properly and harvested without much wastage, the quantum of water that we receive is more than adequate to cater to not only the immediate needs of Tamilnadu but also to its future needs for some more years. Besides we have a long coast line and the sea water could beneficially be employed to solve our water shortage along the coastal districts at least. What we need is a scientific water management. Storage of runoff without wastage, employing modern methods of drift or sprinkler irrigation, avoiding growth of plants not suitable for the soil that suck large quantities of ground water and removing silt in tanks, ponds and natural drains and obstructions in their path of flow are just a few fundamental principles to be strictly followed. In this regard we can learn from Israel, a barren country, which faces a sort of a serious water crisis. Where there is will, there is way. Our neighbours are also Indians and the people there also are as poor as we are. Let us not take cudgels against them.
