Tamil heritage upheld

There is a scene in Kalki’s Ponniyin Selvan in which the loyalists of the Pandya king meet at midnight at Pallipadai temple—a temple raised over the body of the leader—and take a pledge to destroy the Cholas. The action of AIADMK general secretary V.K. Sasikala slamming the memorial slab laid in honour of late Chief Minister Jayalalithaa’s Tuesday morning, invoked this ancient Tamil ritual of “Vanjinam Uraithal” (வஞ்சினம் உரைத்தல்-Avenging).

V. Arasu, former head of the department of Tamil, Madras University, said Vanjinam Uraithal was very common in villages during the reign of the kings. In fact, in some villages in Tamil Nadu, it is still being practised, he added. “They would slam the ground as they treat it as Mother Earth. Mr. Panneerselvam observed a vow of silence at the memorial; Ms Sasikala has taken a different kind of vow,” he said.

“Such pledges would take place in graveyards or in the battlefield to avenge the killing of a king or a warrior. In Tamil Nadu, families of warriors would perform the ritual of vaaikkarisi poduthal (வாய்க்கரிசி போடுதல்-filling the mouth of the dead with rice) before they leave for war. It means they are prepared to go to any length to fulfil their revenge,”

Now we have a replay of all our ancient culture.

Pathetic plight of Sasikala who aimed sky high, but fell in the ditch
Sasikala, the ministry maker is now the candle maker
After decades spent as the aide of late chief minister Jayalalithaa in a posh Poes Garden residence, V K Sasikala will spend the next four years in a small cell+ with just a fan, a pillow, a blanket and a sheet in Parappana Agrahara. She will have to share the cell with two other women. She is entitled to two newspapers a day.
She will have to sleep on a cement floor, and will have to petition the court if she requires a cot. She was issued three saris and blouses on entering prison. Sasikala will have to make candles or agarbathis during her stay in prison and will be paid Rs 50 a day for her labour. There is no day off. Sasikala has put in a request for a Class-1 facility, which the court said it referred to the prison authorities.

Don't compare us with ISRO. They are working on unlimited space whereas we have to work within a very limited space.

Beware of barbers older than 60. When you go to a salon, enquire the age of the tonsorial artist who is going to do hairdressing for you before you bow your head before him.
The Madras High Court has held that barbers over 60 years of age should not be engaged to tonsure heads of devotees at the Palani temple in Dindigul district as they might injure them due to shivering of hands.

We are a cockroach friendly nation. We would like to coexist with them and create the ideal habitat for the roaches. I do not know whether there is any " prevention of cruelty to cockroaches" Association anywhere. But even without that we are very friendly to them. The only thing is most ladies and a few men are either allergic or afraid of the innocent nonviolent roaches. Have you ever heard of a hotel or a restaurant closed as a protest against cockroaches in our country. You will be happy if it doesn't float in your cup of coffee or sail in the sambar or rasam. We have given due respect to it and will continue to preserve our heritage.

No national song? This judge has not seen our pld Hindi and Tamil movies where the lost hero or heroine sings a family song based on which ,he or she is identified and everything ends well thereafter. Similarly if every Indian has a common national song, whernever he is in trouble in a foreign land, if he sings the national song, he can be immediately identified and brought back to the country.

There is no concept of a ‘national song’, says Supreme Court
“Therefore, we do not intend to enter into any debate as far as a national song is concerned,” says Bench.

The pressures of not only marriages, but their very survival in a male dominated world, where women are still looked upon as objects of love and lust to satisfy their ever growing ego and passion, at every stage they have to face challenges to just establish themselkves an d to fight out the discrimination to which they are subjected.in a country where women are worshipped as Godesses, it is strange thatb they are subject to all sorts of physical and mental torture and humiliation. what they need is an understanding that they are also as much human as men and should be treated at par with them. This doesn't mean empowering them at the cost of men. any amount of coercion or law cannot establish and ensure equality without ta change of heart among men.

Heartbreaking story about the pressures of marriage on Indian women goes viral
The dreams of many women have been stifled as a result of such harmful notions.

As Public Health Engineers, we have been advocating clean potable water for all. But now we get the news that drinking clean water can cause asthma. In my days, in my village we were drinking water collected from a lake (Eri) which was a green solution polluted heavily by the public and the decaying lotus plants floating on them for years together and with all that, my mother had severe asthma and I also had asthma for the first twenty five years of my life. So in spite of drinking unclean water we got asthma but survived. It is said and agreed that over- sanitation kills immunity in persons and a certain amount of exposure to insanitation at a young age is preferable. I used to say in my lectures that
"We Indians live as a community
Mainly because of our immunity".
But in our country for many more years, we need not have to worry about oversanitation. My plea is children of Indian origin living in places like US will do well to come to India with thir children and expose them to the Indian environment for some time so that they get the benefit of immunity which is a tricky affair in US and such other countries. Drinking bottled water is no guarantee of cleanliness since most of the bottled waters sold in our country are substandard and spurious. You may now know why our people in our country have so much faith in God.

Tamilnadu is famous for lullabies ( தாலாட்டு) from time immemorial. It is considered one of the best ways of soothing the child and keeping it healthy. In some cases whether the lullabies lull the child or not, those around including the mother get lulled and that way it is good for everybody. In classrooms the lullabies of the lectures take the students to a different world altogether and make it extremely difficult for them to come out of that. Even today I enjoy lullabies which make me go to a state of sleep normally not otherwise experienced by me.
Many of our lullabies have become extinct today and we come to know of them through movies only. Even as some one sings ஆராரோ, ஆரிரரோ, I feel like sleeping in the lap of my mother. It is time that we preserve our lullabies for our future children. But with the advent of cine songs, many mothers seem to have given a good bye to this ancient art for fear of not wanting to threaten the child with their hoarse voice.

Singing lullabies to newborns strengthens your connection with them
Engagement through song is just as effective as book reading or toy play in maintaining infant attention.

India’s rapidly ageing population may soon outweigh the demographic dividend of a young workforce. Unless attitudes towards the elderly improve and the government increases resources for their care, India is staring at the prospect of a generational socioeconomic crisis. If the families can take care of them, the governments will be relieved of half the burden. But the mushrooming of old age homes is a growing sign of family values getting shattered
The present population of the aged in India is about 6% which is likely to reach 20% by 2050. This is the result of better medical treatment facilities and increase in the standard of living of a sizable majority of the population. This increase in the population of this category is something of a serious problem which the future has to face.

Utilisation of solar energy
The Copenhagen International School’s new building is covered by 12,000 colored solar panels based on a technology developed at EPFL. It is one of the largest building-integrated solar power plants in Denmark.

Even in US it is mandatory for schools and certain public buildings to provide solar panel to cater to a part of their energy requirement. whereas in a country like ours where we have a scorching sun glowing throughout the year, we are not making optimum utilisation of a natural, renewable, nonpolluting source of energy which when properly utilised will meet nearly 30% of our energy needs. There is some awakening in this regard, but not a wide awakening which it deserves. Government should give incentives to those who use solar energy and encourage them.

OK, is it ok?
There are dozens of theories about the origin of OK. In fact, a 240-page book has been written on this two-letter word. OK: The Improbable Story of America’s Greatest Word.
"OK” as an Americanism explained is “an abbreviation of oll korrect, jocular respelling of ‘all correct’” ( probably some Malayali has spelt it that way). There are other etymologies for the term. But the most convincing is that it’s of Scottish origin -- an Americanized spelling of the expression “och, aye” indicating consent or agreement.

Brain drain

The following incident is just one example of the order of the day. I know innumerable cases of students after doing their M.Sc or BE taking up jobs for which either they are over qualified or totally unconnected to their qualifications. But no use blaming them? There are not enough jobs to cater to all those qualified in a particular field. Unemployment is looming so large that people flock to any job that is available or they get.

We Indians boast of a high culture, but it is here that we hear everyday that some or other woman is raped and to make matters worse, even children are not spared. What is the reason for this moral degradation? Our ancient scriptures and epics lay high stress on morality and respect for womanhood. They glorify motherhood and deify women as Goddesses. But today if we see around ourselves what is happening, it makes me feel that we cover ourselves under the garb of our culture, heritage and so on but practise at every possible occasion hypocrisy at its worst. We can't blame politicians for this nor find any other scape goat. We are squarely responsible for what we do. We talk one thing and do exactly the opposite in our day today affairs. Some in the guise of Sadhus or Saints indulge in demeaning acts converting our beliefs into cheating and contempt. The teacher who is supposed to be a model for a students acts as a negative model not to be followed. Some of them have become a source of threat to the society and its well being. Universal moral values have to be inculcated in young minds right from the beginning and that is the responsibility of 'Matha, Pitha and Guru , but now parents are mainly interested in making their children future money making machines and the entire word endorses that approach. We will regret for what we are doing now, once things go out of control with no respect to parents, teachers and to family values when we become no better than animals. Already such a change has come into being with living together, promiscuous sex as an index of modernity and promiscuity in sex a matter of right. Once the basic moral values shatter, we are no better than animals and only PETA has to take care of us. Some great scientist with a forethought has rightly classified human beings under ANIMAL KINGDOM.

“When we see that the Speaker is deliberately harping on his community to malign us, it is very regrettable. It is a matter of shame, according to us, for Tamil Nadu" says Stalin. But that is exactly what his party has been doing right from the beginning and that community happened to be Brahmins,. At that time he never felt any shame. The politicians of all hues and shades should give up playing caste and community cards.

Modus operandi of Sasikala and her clan as explained by the senior lawyer Acharya

What Sasikala and her aides used to do was to go to remote areas of Tamil Nadu and purchase fertile land. These people would go with the notary. For instance, if they see your land is fertile, they would offer a price and you have to accept it and subsequently, you have to sign the stamp paper given by them. They would take away your rights to sell or to do anything, by executing the GPA. Once they return to Poes Garden, the registrars would come to register the land as per the directions of Sasikala. The large tracts of land were registered in the names of various firms in which Sasikala was either a partner or a director. In all, they possessed 3,000 acres of land, including one estate of 900 acres. The illegality here was that Sasikala, Ilavarasi and Sudhakaran conspired to launder the ill gotten money of accused number one, Jayalalithaa. The investigators had seized jewellery worth `5 crore and sarees worth ` 90 lakh and 750 pairs of sandals. But, Judge D’Cunha discounted their value saying Jayalalithaa was an actress and she might have got them from film income. However, other charges and the money trail were proved. It was interesting to see the money trial. Sashi Enterprises and Jaya Publications were the two entities which existed for quite some time but hardly any big transaction happened till Jayalalithaa became Chief Minister. Then, suddenly, money started going into the accounts of these enterprises. Interestingly, 250 suitcases were used to carry money from Poes Garden to two branches of Indian Bank and Canara Bank every day. From the accounts of these two entities, funds were transferred to the accounts of six firms and 28 companies in which Sasikala was either director or promoter.
Will justice be done for all those whose lands have been forcibly taken over by Sasikala and co?

Shut shop if you can't treat effluents, SC warns polluting industries
There are quite a number of industries in our country discarding untreated effluent into nearby water bodies. we all know that Ganges is one of the worst polluted rivers in our country and in Tamil Nadu. it is Cauvery. If at all there is some flow in Cauvery, it is mostly due to the contribution of the industries near by the river along its entire stretch, The seasonal river Palar is heavily polluted due to tannery wastes. Efforts have been taken for the past more than three decades to contain pollution i water bodies, but the results are far from encouraging. Even when gran ts are provided by the government, the outcome is disappointing for various reasons. Politics, lack of alternative provision for those who lose their jobs as a result of shut down of plants not complying with the pollution control norms, caste and other such factors. we are very proud of being the lead leather producers, the reason being treatment of tannery waste is a cumbersome affair and the westerners, to save their land and water resources have reserved leather manufacture to countries like India and we boast of the same saying that we are the lead producers of leather. the manufatured raw leather whichis now safe is exported to the west where they convert it into value added leather products which we purchase at a high cost. as one involved in this field of effluent treatment, I can give several examples of our country being at the receiving end. it is time that there is strict enforcement of pollution control standards if ourv water bodies and land are to be saved. so I welcome the SC directive to industries to Provide treatment plants failing which to shut down their industry.
