Jagadish Chandra Bose

Acharya J.C. Bose was a man of many talents. Born on 30 November, 1858 in Bikrampur, West Bengal, he was a polymath, physicist, biologist, botanist and archaeologist. He pioneered the study of radio and microwave optics, made important contributions to the study of plants and laid the foundation of experimental science in the Indian sub-continent. He was the first person to use semiconductor junctions to detect radio signals, thus demonstrating wireless communication for the first time. What’s more, he is also probably the father of open technology, as he made his inventions and work freely available for others to further develop. His reluctance for patenting his work is legendary.




Another of his well known inventions is the crescograph, through which he measured plant response to various stimuli and hypothesized that plants can feel pain, understand affection etc.




While most of us are aware of his scientific prowess, we might not be aware of his talent as an early writer of science fiction! He is in fact considered the father of Bengali science fiction.

இந்தியாவில் பெருகிய அனைத்து ஊழல்களுக்கும் முன்னோடி என்ற பெருமையைப் பெற்றது.

ஆட்சியில் இருந்தபோது மது விலக்கை அகற்றி, இன்றைய டாஸ்மாக்கிற்கு வித்திட்டு ஏழைகளை நடுத்தெருவில் நிறுத்திவிட்டு, கச்சத்தீவு, காவிரி மறு ஆய்வு, ஹைட்ரோகார்பன் ஜல்லிக்கட்டுக் காளைப் பிரச்சினை போன்ற அனைத்திற்கும் காங்கிஸுடன் சேர்ந்து கொண்டு பூம், பூம் மாடு போல தலையாட்டிவிட்டு இன்று இதை எல்லாம் எதிர்கட்சிகளுடன் சேர்ந்து கொண்டு எதிர்ப்பது.

This article on Indian youths is a little prejudiced, because the author judges the youth by his own standards. If people have some respect for tradition, they are called conservatives and not modern. And sticking to one's faith is described as conservatism and intolerance. It is not necessary that one has to accept what all is modern to be called modern and if not dub him traditionalist . Neither all that which is modern is good nor all that old is bad. Most people like arranged marriages and it is not a sin, because still our people believe in respecting the sentiments of their parents. Love marriages are on the increase and only when law is taken in their own hands by parents to forcefully separate the lovers, it is an offence. Living together is not a part of our culture and if one opposes it, he is blamed a traditionalist and objecting to it in keeping with the tradition that makes marriages meaningful is considered outmoded. There are many things in the name of modernism that deserves to be condemned. Even the youth today who support many of the modern trends seem to go against them in due course with their experience on later years. Today divorce and remarriages are accepted and people are changing their attitudes and beliefs. Still there will be some to oppose them and they will get marginslised. Again the term intolerance is misused here. The majority Hindus of India are the MOST TOLERANT IN THE ENTIRE WORLD. Otherwise how do you expect this country to have so many other religionists in this country. When Buddhism was propagated, there was no war of roses here. It was quietly accepted. Simlar was the case when Jainism and Sikhism were propagated. We didn't have great religious wars in our country as others had elsewhere. Compared to other parts of the world, our people are the most tolerant who are tolerating criticism against them as being intolerant. I don't mean to say that everything is alright here. One black mark in an otherwise tolerant atmosphere is the discrimination against Dalits. They need better treatment but our system has been so much politicised that caste system has become more rigid than ever before thanks to politicians and our democracy, since democracy survives solely based on numbers only and so politicians vie with each other to get the numbers by hook or crook that will enthrone them.

This surname business is causing lot of confusions for individuals in the South, particulaly those from Tamil Nadu. We in Tamil Nadu use our names with initials which stand for the first letter of father's name and in some cases and when necessary to include the the first letter of the village or the town name in addition. When I filled in the US visa form, I was at a loss to understand what is meant by first name, second name and last name. This is a confusion which most people from the South get encountered with. People put their initials before their name usually, but some prefer to put it at the end. Since most name registers are prepared based on names in an alphabetical order, the initials are marked after the names. So when initials are expanded, some expand the initials before their names and some do it after their names. This in due course causes lot of confusion as to which is the first name and which is the surname. To add to the confusion, spellings in names vary from place to place, for eg Swamy is spelt as Swamy or Swami or Samy or Sami. And in spite of your giving your name in bold letters, your name gets distorted to suit the whims and fancies of the individual in the desk who enters the name in the register. A name like Guru is something very common in India ( why? Even abroad) but in my ration card, it was punched as Kuru. Then with their imagination running riot, they make their own permutations and combinations with the result I have half a dozen spellings and names. To add to the confusion, some people are known by their pet names and that finds a place in official records too causing a hell of a lot of confusion for the person and the officials concerned. So far, we were able to live comfortably within India with all our names and spellings. But now it is no more possible with Aadhar, PIN and so on. But once you apply for a passport and a visa, you are in for trouble. Ladies with a maiden name change their names after marriage and that adds to this confusion further. But today even when you have no plans to apply for a passport, we are made to face the problem thanks to Aadhar name and PIN name. It is the bounden duty of the government to simplify the issue without causing problems for tax payer and the genuine citizen of the country. All government departments should ensure that they record the name of the individuals AS GIVEN BY THE INDIVIDUALS IN CAPITAL LETTERS in the official forms. Having failed there, no use passing on the buck to the citizens. At least here after when name and spelling correction is requested based on proper proof, the corrections should be ENTERTAINED and made.

A lesser known Muslim cleric and a senior leader of Jamiat Ulema Hind, Mufti Mohammad Ilyas Qasmi who has been propagating Hindu-Muslim unity in Ayodhya, referred to Lord Shiva as the first messenger of Islam. He also backed the RSS view that "every Indian is a Hindu."



He said he thought there was nothing objectionable or wrong about referring to Indian Muslims as Hindus, since Muslims from India are called 'Hindi' in Arabian countries........

Muslim leaders were quick to distance themselves from Qasmi's remarks. The secretary of Jamiat, Hafiz Irfan, said: "What Qasmi has said are his personal views. There were, indeed, a series of one lakh twenty four thousand prophets sent by Allah to Earth. Lord Rama, Lord Krishna or Lord Shiva may be one of them, but none of this finds mention in the holy Quran. Only God is the creator, not his messengers."

Maulana Khalid Rasheed Firangi Mahali, head cleric of the Aishbagh Eidgah in Lucknow, said Islam showed respect to all religions and religious figures. However, it did not suggest anywhere that Lord Shiva was a Prophet, he added. ............

Sivan Sir (Brother of Mahaperiyavar Paramacharyaswamigal's poorvasrama brother) had written a book on "Enippadigalil Mandhargal" ( ஏணிப்படிகளில் மாந்தர்கள்) in which he had made umpteen references to the prevalence of Hinduism in Egypt and several parts of Europe. Because of the vicissitudes of fortune and as a result of political upheavals etc, the basics of Hinduism underwent certain changes to suit the then times and appeared in a different form as Islam. The preachings of Christ also has many things in common with the tenets of Hinduism. The origin of Quran and Arabic language has a very close link to the origin of Sanskrit/ Tamil and Vedas. Many of the basic tenets of both these religions are common, but Islam in due course was given different interpretation when it has to establish itself against Christianity. While Islam and Christianity believe that their religion is the only true one in the world that will lead one to Godhood Hinduism believes all religions ultimately direct us towards the one and only Supreme being known by different names, just as all the waters that descend from the skies reach the same ocean through different routes. ( Akasath pathitham thoyam yatha gachathi sagaram, Sarvadeva Namaskaraha Kesavam Prathi gachathi) So if there is no need for us to hate each other in the name of religion. If we realise this truth, the world will become an abode of peace.

S.M. Ali
Sálim Moizuddin Abdul Ali, born on November 12, 1896 in Mumbai, was an ornithologist and a naturalist. Salim Ali was among the first Indians to conduct systematic bird surveys across India and his bird books helped develop ornithology in the sub-continent. This Birdman of India was the key figure behind the Bombay Natural History Society after 1947 and used his personal influence to garner government support for the organisation. He was awarded India’s second highest civilian honour, the Padma Vibhushan in 1976.

Justice Dipak Misra, senior-most judge, stressed upon the need for electoral reforms saying that "purchasing power has no room in elections" and a candidate must bear in mind that "contesting elections is not an investment".
Every election, whether it is a by election or the main election, is "A BUY ELECTION " only and no party is averse to this evil except those that couldn't afford. It is not only the poorest below the poverty line who expect an election to be an event of making some small gains, but even some of the middle class are not averse to it and they want to be a Roman at Rome. When some privilege, however small or temporary it may be, is thrust on them, they feel that it is an act of foolishness not to oblige the donor. Even some politicians like Kejriwal and Vijayakanth, instead of stoutly opposing this sort of bribery advice people to receive the money and vote as per their conscience. From our experience so far, one can clearly conclude that money is THE motivating factor for most of the poor voters to vote and that is what seems to save our democracy. And for all politicians contesting elections, it is NOT PUBLIC SERVICE THAT IS THEIR MOTIVATION. IT IS AN INVESTMENT and public service is incidental. Voting for a cause has replaced voting for the favour received. Unless there is serious awakening on the part of the countrymen as a whole, the situation is not going to change. How then do we explain the fact that many of our MPs and MLAs are those against whom criminal charges are framed. It can be seen that they are the moneyed "DADAs" of their constituency. With the present legal and political system, it is impossible to prevent criminals with moneyed power from contesting the elections and it is also impossible to prevent them from purchasing the voters either by threats or enticement. So it is fallacious to expect the criminals to be honest who want to taste power by hook or crook and the voters who succumb to temptations.
Similarly poll promises serve a limited purpose of brain washing and garnering votes only and are not meant to be implemented in toto.

Har Gobind Khorana

Born on January 9, 1922 at Raipur village in West Punjab (now in Pakistan), Khorana was an Indian-American biochemist who shared the 1968 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with Marshall W. Nirenberg and Robert W. Holley for research that helped to show how the order of nucleotides in nucleic acids, which carry the genetic code of the cell, control the cell’s synthesis of proteins.




In 1970, Khorana became the first to synthesize an artificial gene in a living cell. His work became the foundation for much of the later research in biotechnology and gene therapy.




How many are aware that the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the Government of India (DBT Department of Biotechnology), and the Indo-US Science and Technology Forum jointly created the Khorana Program in 2007? The mission of the Khorana Program is to build a seamless community of scientists, industrialists, and social entrepreneurs in the United States and India. Khorana died of natural causes on November 9, 2011 at the age of 89.

Born on November 14, 1891 in West Punjab, Sahni was an Indian paleobotanist who studied the fossils of the Indian subcontinent. He was also a geologist who took an interest in archaeology. His greatest contributions lie in the study of the plants of India in the present as well as the historical context.
He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of London (FRS) in 1936, the highest British scientific honor, awarded for the first time to an Indian botanist.
He was a founder of The Paleobotanical Society which established the Institute of Palaeobotany on 10 September 1946 and which initially functioned in the Botany Department of Lucknow University. Sahni died on 10 April 1949 due to a heart attack.

A.P.J. Abdul Kalam

Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam, born on October 15, 1931 is an Indian scientist who worked as an Aerospace engineer with Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).




Kalam started his career by designing a small helicopter for the Indian Army. Kalam was also part of the INCOSPAR committee working under Vikram Sarabhai, the renowned space scientist. In 1969, Kalam was transferred to the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) where he was the project director of India’s first indigenous Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV-III) which successfully deployed the Rohini satellite in near earth’s orbit in July 1980.




He also served as the 11th President of India from 2002 to 2007. Kalam advocated plans to develop India into a developed nation by 2020 in his book India 2020. He has received several prestigious awards, including the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour. Known for his love for children, did you know that Kalam had set a goal of meeting 100,000 students in the 2 years after his resignation from the role of scientific adviser in 1999? Even as he was lecturing, he passed away on 27-07-2015. May he continue to inspire millions.

Food Wastage

Food wastage is a major concern all over the world and India has a large amount being wasted for a country where millions have to sleep without any food. While the French already have a law against food wastage and organisations in India are running initiatives to take leftover food from eateries to feed the poor, the government of India has now stepped in.




Weeks after PM Modi expressed concern about food wastage urging citizens to refrain from what he described as injustice, the Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Ram Vilas Paswan has asked for the amount of food served at restaurants to be fixed

Many of us bear testimony to this fact that while on the one hand, there are people who go to bed on an empty stomach, we find peple unscrupulously wasting food in star hotels. It is more so in Indian weddings. Catering too many items during breakfast, lunch and dinner in our marriages results in enormous quantities of food wastage besides causing problems to the consumers. In Germany, there are a few hotels where they bill for the food that one wastes, even though he has already paid for it saying that food is a national resource and nobody can afford to waste it. முதல்வர் பழனிசாமியை பதவி இறக்கம் செய்து அப்பதவிக்கு தினகரன் முயற்சிப்பதாகவும் ஒரு செய்தி. இதைவிட தமிழ்நாட்டிற்குக் கேடுகெட்ட செய்தி எதுவும் வேண்டாம். தமிழ்நாடு அப்படி என்ன பாவம் செய்தது? 60 ஆண்டுகளாக திராவிடக்கட்சிகளைப் பதவியில் அமர்த்திய பாவத்தைவிட வேறு என்ன பெரிய பாவம் செய்ய வேண்டும் என்று ஒரு சில பாஜகவினர் முனகுவது என் காதில் விழுகிறது. இன்று தினகரன் தலைமையில் 5 மந்திரிகள் பணப் பட்டுவாடாவில் சம்மந்தப் பட்டுள்ளனர் என்று ஊர்ஜிதமாகியிருக்கிறது. பணமும் பறிக்கப் பட்டிருக்கிறது. ஆனால் பணம் பறிக்கப்பட்டால் மட்டும் போதாது. சம்மந்தப் பட்ட அனைவரும் கைது செய்யப்பட வேண்டும். இதில் முதல்வர் பெயரும் இருப்பதால் இந்த அரசு டிஸ்மிஸ் செய்யப் பட வேண்டும். இப்படி சில கடுமையான நடவடிக்கைகள் எடுத்தாலொழிய தேர்தலில் பணத்தின் பேயாட்டம் ஓயாது. ஓயாது. ஓயவே ஓயாது.
இப்போது அடுத்த காட்சி ஆரம்பம். அதாவது யாருக்கு இரட்டை இலை என்று? சமாதானமாகப் போவார்கள் என்றால் அதற்கு இன்று சாத்தியமே இல்லை என்ற நிலை வந்துவிட்டது. இன்னும் கொஞ்ச நாட்களுக்குக் காட்டமாக நடக்கப்போகும் இந்தக் குடுமிப் பிடி சண்டை தொடர்ந்து நம்மையெல்லாம் மெய்சிலிர்க்க வைக்கப்போகிறது. இப்போது நடக்கும், நடக்கப்போகும் இந்த உண்மையான அஇஅதிமுக யார் என்ற நாடகம் சோவின் நாடகங்களை விட நம்மைப் பரவசமூட்டியும். அதிர்ச்சியிலாழ்த்தியும், ( சிந்திக்க வேண்டிய தேவை இல்லாமல்) சிரிக்க வைத்தும் மகிழச்செய்யப் போகின்றன. நாமெல்லோரும் பார்வையாளராக அதைப் பார்த்து ரசிப்போம். இந்த இரட்டை இலை யாருக்குக் கிடைக்க வேண்டும் என்பதில் நமக்குள் கோபித்த அல்லது ஏகோபித்த முடிவு வர இதோ ஒரு எளிய வழி:
