Hi everyone,

The Worshiping while menstruating took thread became a hot thread..so I thought of starting one about men.

So lets begin.

Let me start with my experience in this with other religions.

Now some of us might wonder what does a woman know about man?

Believe me..men always want to know about women so let me learn about your guys!LOL

Ok some many years back when I was doing a dressing of a person with diabetes who had his few toes amputated..the patient who happened to be a Muslim told me that till his wound is healed he cant pray.

Muslim prayer requires the body to be cleaned all over before prayer and one needs to be "pure".

A wound in the body cant be fully cleaned with water..so one is not ritually pure..hence no prayer allowed.

Muslims even clean the nostrils before prayer by inhaling some amount of water thru the nostrils just enough to prevent a gag reflex.

So this man who had a seeping wound post amputation told me that he could not pray till he was fully healed.

Now even while before going to pray if a Muslim man were to accidentally touch his wife while walking into the prayer room..he is considered impure and he has to re wash himself for prayer.

Also while praying if he passes flatus..his prayer is deemed impure and cancelled and he has to wash himself again and re start.

Now while praying just say if he has an extreme urge to defecate/urinate ..even though no feces/urine comes out he is still considered impure and his prayer is cancelled.

And obviously after sexual intercourse he has to take purification bath before prayer.

Now I would like to know if the similar restrictions are imposed on the Hindu Male.

Inputs from all Maamas please!

Actually all restrictions are only put on men by ladies and the conditions they need to meet before ladies yield to desires of men are also set by ladies

Tbsji has kindly pointed that ladies know better.

if religion restricts them in any way I frankly do not know

the issues related to restrictions on ladies are created by ladies themselves and men foolishly get sucked into such non issues

I can see the response to this thread is very very slow..even the conservative members are still busy in "Worshiping during Menses" thread.

So far only TBS ji and Krish ji have posted here that too totally non committal answers.

Lets wait and see for other men to join in.

Even a thread like should women wear leggings took of rather well in Chit Chat section sometime back..if the topic is about rape than the whole forum becomes alive and kicking each one preaching morals in their own way!LOL

Time will tell..lets wait and watch..I have a feeling this thread wont take off well..That would only proof that men just love meddling with affairs of women!LOL

Renuka,

The thread has actually taken off well. More than 30 views and 3 replies in under 2 hrs. But personally I profess ignorance just like the two previous gentlemen.

Dear Renu,

TBS Sir knows the 'rules' but does not want to enter controversies!

I know a few rules for both genders in tambrams while doing poojAs:

1. Head bath is a must before doing any poojA.

2. 'madi' cloths - the cloths dried on some high clothesline and untouched before having bath are to be worn.

These cloths are handled with a long stick! :)

3. If there is a death in the family, poojAs are not to be performed for certain number of days.

The number of days differ, according to the relationship with the dead person.

4. One should not hold back #1 or #2 while doing poojA. In case of emergency, washing feet and hands is a must

after finishing that job. And some water has to be sprinkled on the head for purification. (theertha prOkshaNam)

Now... a rule exclusively for boys / mAmAs.

4. Two vasthrams to be worn by men over the undergarments - Normal dhoti for unmarried boys / men and panchakacham

for married men and a second piece tied like a belt / to cover the top! But some married men opt only for normal dhoti!

Dear RR ji,

I remember reading somewhere that the Yagnopavit should be hung over one of the ears while answering the call of nature.

I cant remember which ear..left or right.

Is that true?

Anyway I am still waiting for replies..the thread is still not very active despite the views.

I dont believe you!LOL

I am sure you know.

You have to believe me Renuka. I am certainly not one into rituals .Neither did our parents teach us any ritual nor did we take interest in learning the rituals. My attachment to Hinduism is wholly at philosophical level.

First of all one prayers for peace of mind, no more no less.
Prayers for worldly goods, or begging from God, is totally useless endeavor .
So purity or impurity is of no significance.
To calm and focus the mind one can use prayers.

Then again we are pure.
Aham Brahmasmi.

I could not relate to any of the rituals you have posted

only 4. is concerned , when I go for funerals which is often as I go for all funerals without fail, my wife insists I wash my feet and hands before entering home which I do

most reluctantly

Thus say many mAmAs to escape from rituals!

Hinduism is real cool, as Renu says!

Dear Renu,

You are correct. It is the right ear.

Most of the mAmAs won't remember because their poonool is either hanging somewhere or lost!! :)

it would be a good idea to keep poonool safely with wifes thaali . they can hand over to wife for safe keeping

I never had a thread ceremony . my brother gave me one ten days before marriage saying I need to wear it to get married conventional way . I took it and promptly misplaced . on the day before marriage , he monitored and found that I do not have it and gave me one more again saying " I know you will throw it away' lol

The hindu scriptures do not prescribe any rules for worship or prayer. As per BagwadGita, howsoever you pray, to whomsoever you pray, the prayer reaches God.

If purity were required as condition for prayer, absolutely no one, not even the sankaracharya can pray. The muslims seem to be ulta in this matter, among many other things.

The only condition for prayer to be effective is FAITH, which is the substance of things hoped for and evidence of things unseen.

Even if you have faith as a mustard seed, and say to a mountain 'be ye cast into the sea' and have no atom of doubt or unbelief, the mountain will be cast into the sea.

Prayer is to remove impurities and purify ourselves. Prayer is to commune and connect with the divine. To successfully connect with the divine, ego must be killed and humility must pervade out being. Even to kill the ego, it is not possible by ourselves. It is possible only by God who will do it when prayed for and asked for.

Dear Krish Sir,

1. I know!

2. After reluctantly washing your feet,
I hope you have a head bath too! :)

!.How well you have understood me as far as 1 is concerned
2. As regards head bath, it is still an item of conflict .specially it comes along with a request to hand over the clothes worn also for a wash.
prepared to comply with hand over of clothes but I still want a compromise for amount of water for head. I offeredl A formal few drops on head , but she feels nothing short of full bath would do.lol

Dear Krish ji,

My father's family used to have a ritual like this for anyone who attended a funeral.

Before entering the house one should wash hands and feet with water mixed with turmeric and then we were given a neem leaf and asked to chew on it!

The neem is utterly bitter!

There may be a few ladies who do not give the due respect to their 'thAli'! But some like me also live on the earth! :)

The foreigners have better knowledge of our culture. I have gone thrice to the U S of A by different airlines and once to Malaysia.

During ALL the security check-ups, I told my sentiment and the officers allowed me to wear my thAli. :thumb:

P.S: I noticed many tambram mAmis just tossing their thAli on a tray to go through the scanning machine! :dizzy:

continuing the last post
once I helped someone a north indian with funeral arrangement. He wanted me to revisit after ten days or so . I clean forgot . He landed at my place at 11 am with food

on a tray . He wanted me to take it as per their convention , he cannot have food before me as I helped with funeral arrangements. I do not know if I was what is called

Savundi and I was representing the dead mans soul for taking food lol

what does one do when thaali is heavy and there are many around the neck responding to sentiments of two communities in inter community marriages . my daughter

married to a telugu iyer has three with gundus at both ends of thalli covering whole neck. sensible to hang it on hangers in almirahs and take it out on ceremonial occassions along with

husbands poonool. it might reduce cases of chain snatching which are rampant in metros.

Dear Krish Sir,

We are deviating from the topic. But still I have to answer your Q. In our family circle, whenever the girl has to settle abroad

and has to wear jeans/ pants most of the time, there is a good idea! Two sets in the thAli, each of which usually weighs one

sovereign is made in half the weight to reduce the size. The girls wear the full set fixed to fancy smooth chains.

It depends on the individual to give sentimental importance to the thAli and not the country they live in! :)

Ha Ha Ha!

The deviation of topic shows that somehow people love talking about women!LOL

I am yet to see the conservative males of Forum in this thread.

BTW the Thali is kept the safest in the bank locker.
