The four components in the “Ceiling on Desires” programme are: Curb on excessive talk, curb on excessive desires and expenditure, control of consumption of food, and check on waste of energy. You need some essential commodities for sustenance, and you should not aspire for more. Only if air is available in sufficient quantity will it be comfortable. If it is excessive and there is a gale, you will feel uncomfortable. When you are thirsty, you can consume only a limited quantity of water needed for the sustenance of the body; you can’t drink the entire water of the River Ganga. Your eyes automatically close when they happen to see a flash of lightning because they can’t withstand such high illumination. Therefore there must be a limit to everything, including desires.

- Divine Discourse, Jan 19, 1983.

Control your tongue as it always craves for a variety of delicacies. Ask yourself this question, “O tongue, how many bags of rice, wheat and vegetables, how many delicacies have you tasted? Fie on you if you are still unsatisfied!” Eat sufficiently to satisfy your hunger and sustain your body, without giving undue importance to taste. Likewise, your eyes must see God instead of watching unsacred things on the television or video. May your ears listen to the stories of the Lord instead of vain gossip. All that you see and hear gets imprinted on your heart and unsacred things pollute it. When your heart is polluted, life becomes meaningless. Human heart is like a pen. The colour of the words that you write will be the same as the colour of the ink in the pen. God expects you to fill your heart with love. Then, all that you think say and do will be suffused with love and your life shall become sacred.

Every relationship in one's life, whether it is a friend or a relative
is established and maintained only through proper and effective
communication. Similarly, one gets communication from different
methods or in various ways, say for eg. Scriptures, Namasmaran,
Bhajans, Pravachanams, Messages from Temples and of late
Magazines, etc. Some get dreams, see the visions/miracles
happening to others. The Supreme Power dwells in everyone
and it is necessary for everyone to nurture the relationship with
divine attitude. It is an absolutely an essential task, i.e. part of one's
day to day activity. Some adopt special methods viz. like Japam,
Meditation, etc. Some work on goals like prayers, dedicated worships,
etc to get relief from pressures, stress, etc which the experience
in day to day life. One has to follow the paths of righteousness,
with obedience & sincerity and demonstrate one's will power to
achieve the divine bliss. If this is done regularly, one can get a
change of mind, good feelings of heart and proper direction in one's life.
Purpose of prayer is only to seek the blessings of the Supreme Power.
The Supreme Power always answers the prayers of all devotees, but
unfortunately some devotees do not recognize that. Normally,
people only look for HIM when there is difficulty or painful circumstances.
True Devotees identify His power always.

[TD="width: 690"]It was during my first visit to Prasanthi Nilayam in 1966 when I first heard Swami being called an Avatar. I was sitting with a small group of young Indian men on the ladies side of the Mandir, when Swami suddenly appeared and started walking across the large square of sand that has now become a green park. He was walking barefooted and red robed towards one of the terraced houses that then stood in line with their backs to the road, and their doors and front windows facing the square of golden sand. We watched the progress of Swami in silence for a time, then the young man sitting beside me with whom I had a great deal of discussion, said in a quiet voice 'Many of us regard Him as an Avatar'. This gave me something of a shock. Did he mean that this little figure, with the mop of fuzzy black hair above His soft luminous eyes was God? I looked at the speaker again. It was the serious face of the Crown Prince of Venkatagiri. From our previous discussion, I had learned to respect the knowledge and insight of this young man. Now he spoke in all seriousness about One that I had considered to be a great yogi with miraculous powers and understanding, being an Avatar of God. I remained silent; but mentally decided that when I got back to the Theosophical Headquarters, I would get any books I could find from the library, and try to learn what I needed to know about the term `Avatar'.
However, I did not, in fact, learn very much from the books available. Lord Krishna, Who lived some five thousand years ago, seemed to have been the last of the Avatars. He brought great changes to the people of the earth at that time as did, indeed, the former Avatar Rama. Did such Beings, when they came to the earth, always shake and move and change the world? Later on, I remember hearing Swami that Jesus Christ was a partial Avatar. Jesus did in fact change the Western half of the world from the power seeking, egotistical values of the Roman Empire to the compassionate Christendom. If a partial Avatar could do so much, what might a full Avatar do for the whole world? But first, I must get clear in my mind, what was meant by an Avatar, and find out if this small red robed figure, Whom I had begun to respect and love deeply, was really One. While I pondered this question, I continued to be with Sai Baba as much as I possibly could, which wa s most of the time.
`God as Man on earth!' this seemed to be a far-fetched and incomprehensible idea certainly in my early years. Christian theology had taught me that God had come to earth once, but only once, in the form of Jesus Christ and that He would never come again, except at the end of the world. Certainly, my own thinking and Theosophy had knocked this idea out of my mind. It was not now a part of my belief system. I knew that Theosophy did accept the truth of the earlier Avatars, Krishna and Rama but this was all so long ago.
The idea of God Himself coming to the earth in the form of a man in this modern world was a concept that seemed impossible for me to accept. And if Almighty God did in fact decide on such an unlikely move, why should He choose to be born in a remote, primitive village, hidden away in southern India, where the mass of the mankind was unlikely to hear of Him for a very long time, if ever?
Then suddenly, the whole idea became acceptable to my understanding and to my belief. It happened this way. One day, I was strolling quietly in a small garden that fronted the doorway of Swami's interview room in the two-storey house that stood where the white, lotus shaped Mandir now stands at Brindavan, Bangalore. We were all expecting Swami to emerge from the doorway at any moment. Appearing suddenly, Swami walked into the garden among us. He stopped not far from where I was standing. A young Indian, probably in his early twenties, stepped boldly in front of Sai Baba, and even more boldly asked the question `Are You God?' The hush that fell over the group of men seemed expectant, and yet somehow fearful. But Swami was His calm, normal Self. He pointed His finger at the young man and replied, `You are God!'
Then, standing among us in that small quiet garden, He gave a simple revealing talk that taught me so very much about the nature of man and God. The gist of it was that God incarnates in every man and woman born on earth but we are not aware of this wonderful truth, although perhaps sometimes dimly aware. Our very purpose in being born as a human being, He told us, is to work towards the realisation of the great truth of our Divinity. We are, in fact, when born - Avatars, without the knowledge of this stupendous truth! The ones who are called Avatars are those who are born with the knowledge of this great truth of their identity with God. And so He said, `The only difference between you and Me is that while you are Avatars and you do not know it, I knew it from the time of My childhood. When l tell you as I do, that you are God, that God is within you all, you may or may not believe it, but you have to do more than believe it, you must by th e life you live, and through your Sadhana reach the point where you experience your own Godhood. Then you will not only believe, but realise that you are God. That is the one step that you must take to know in your mind and experience in your whole consciousness that you and I Are one.'

In this world, you must perform both great deeds and good deeds. The vagaries of modern life are rather mysterious and beyond understanding. They are called ‘Dushta Chathushtayam or Akara Chatushtayam’ (Evil Quartet) which comprise of: Lack of faith (Avishwasam), doubt (Anumanam), jealousy (Asuya) and ego (Ahamkaram). Lack of good character makes one develop bad thinking. Lack of faith leads to doubt. Today, many people are ready to trust a stranger on the street but refuse to believe the scriptures and noble commandments of great saints or their own parents. They do not believe even in the words of those that love and care for them. Be aware of these pitfalls and develop good conduct. For good conduct, truth and righteousness are essential. Undertake meritorious deeds with noble motives and immerse yourself in the feeling of love.

- Divine Discourse, 'My Dear Students', Vol 2, Ch 1.

It is very simple that people who do not have faith in the Supreme Power
may not believe in HIS existence and it is rather impossible for them to
seek HIS divine bliss easily, that means he/she lacks wisdom. Some feel
that faith comes only when there is a proof or evidence. Complete
trust or confidence in someone or something can be gained only when
a person has a belief in it. It does not come over a night. It has to be
built up over a period of time with complete confidence in HIM by
worshiping HIM time and time again with the perfect righteousness approach.
Supreme Power is not a stranger to anyone. For some, one has to spend
more time with regular observance/performance of the spiritual deeds or acts.
Some seek the blessings of Supreme Power only when there is a suffering,
sorrow, etc. Our Hindu Scriptures have many examples and it is for the
devotee to approach it in a proper perspective. In the light of these scriptures,
pravachanams, etc. one has to build an atmosphere of faith having belief in
the Supreme Power and get associated with a Satsang to build a real faith.
This process will show vital points over a period of time why one shoud
worship the God.

For anyone to remember the Soul (Atma), food is very essential. From Divine Soul (Brahman) Ether emerged. From Ether came Air. From Air was born Fire. And from Fire came Water. From Water, Earth emerged, and from the Earth, various plants and food. Finally from food, human beings evolved. To attain union with the Divine, one has to cross all these stages and take the return journey. The life principle present within our gross body, is called Prana. Within the sheath of Prana (Pranamaya Kosha), is present the sheath of mind (Manomaya Kosha) and within it, the subtler sheath of intellect (Vijnanamaya Kosha). Latent in the Vijnanamaya Kosha is the sheath of bliss (Ananadamaya Kosha). Many people stop journeying after reaching the Mind sheath. To attain bliss you must proceed onward, beyond f ood, mind and the sheath of the intellect.

- Divine Discourse, 'My Dear Students', Vol 2, Ch

Time only is measured in every field or aspects of life even if one is diligent.
As regards concerning the space of time or about its utilization in achieving
the desired or determined goal, one has to analyse both good or evil deeds
in life. Mere possession of interest in achieving the goal is insufficient. Happyness
or misery is a cycle in life. No evil deeds can inherit the path towards the
Supreme Power, as evils lead to a suffer-able stage only. Places of unusual or
uncomfortable ones should not be chosen for meditation exercises or for
worshiping purposes. One has to endeavour to do meditation exercises to
attain to attain the divine bliss. Further one has to see that justice and magnanimity
are preserved at all times towards protection of divine acts or deeds evaluating
the cause and effects. A person's happiness does not consist of wealth, honor,
fame, glory, power or pleasure in life. In fact, a person's happiness can be
found only in the Supreme Power, who is the source of all good deeds.

The life of Shakuni in Mahabharatha is a classical case study. He was the epitome of bad company and bad thoughts. He was not only the maternal uncle of Duryodhana, but also his confidant. The ego of Duryodhana reached a climax, on account of the counsel of Shakuni. Ego does not have the power of discrimination. Duryodhana entered into bad actions and followed the bad counsel given to him. Shakuni is well known for his evil ideas, Duryodhana for his egoism and Dushasana for his wrong behavior. Karna was a noble one. But on account of the bad company he was in, he was ready to perform bad deeds. Hence the ancient quote, “Bad association causes bad acts”. Karna became notorious, because of his evil association. These are the lessons Mahabharatha holds out for us. You must be aware of the above and take adequate care.

One should not be biased or prejudiced in one's view point. Similarly one
should not express unwillingness to recognize and respect others
and avoid differences in opinions or beliefs, besides narrowness of mind
or ideas or views in executing divine deeds. One should have certain
virtues like to understand the problems of others, forgive others mistakes,
help others in times of need, etc. To be precise one should give up egoism,
narrow-mindedness and selfishness and learn to live in oneness and harmony
with everyone in a Satsang. If a person moves along with others in a Satsang
the acts or deeds or pravachanams kindles the hearts of devotees and
energizes the divine flame. A Satsang provides opportunities to remove stress
or tension, social conflicts and builds a harmonious community with a magnanimity.
Normally one gets influenced by the prejudices and thus one should not give room
at all costs and one should move with everyone without making any discrimination.
Once a person attains the status of meditative absorption, his/her mind will be pure
without any selfishness. Once meditation practices gain momentum, one easily
understands the differences between happiness and sorrow, delight and despair,
disappointment and satisfaction, hope and fear and would not pay much attention
towards these. Thus everything is the outcome of one's own mind and deeds

Satwik
food must be less spicy, less salty and must have less amount of tamarind (sourness). Not merely that, it must not be made up of excess oil, must be fresh and must not be stale (food prepared in the morning should not be taken in the evening). This is Satwik food. Some people consider milk as Satwik. No doubt, milk, curds and fruits are Satwik in nature, but when consumed in excessive amounts, they become Tamasik and make one dull and sleepy. When we take curds in excess, we can become Tamasik. Hence reduce having milk or curds in large quantities. It is good to mix one part of water with one part of milk. The food you eat must have been earned and prepared through the right means and should be offered to God before partaking. Only then Satwik feelings will emanate in man. If the food is earned th rough unrighteousness means, it will generate wicked feelings.

First of all, in Hindu religion, we have certain earmarked procedures
for preparation of neivedhyam for the purpose of offering to Supreme
Power. In religious ceremonies a traditional method is followed.
Sometimes, fruits viz. apples, oranges, banana, guava, etc are
all offered to the Supreme Power which are of natural kinds. As far as
diet is concerned it has to be completely satwik with all energetic
substances to be absorbed into the human being to produce good
virtues. As the body grows or develops, there has to be a proper
religious sense also has to grow, by which one develops a spirit of
divine involvement. Unless one follows strictly dietary theories
and use the religious practical lifestyle, one would not be able to
get into divine deeds. Further, the sacred food not only nourishes
the body but also the soul. It rather plays a vital role in traditional
occasions to serve to the devotees, who are accustomed to eat
only sacred food after offering them to the Supreme Power.

One can notice in Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna states that if one offers
HIM with love and devotion a leaf, a flower, a fruit or water, HE will accept
it. From this, one can understand that Supreme Power expects HIS devotee
to offer the Neivadhyam in the form of devotion and love to HIM. That is
why, the neivedhyam is offered chanting mantras to state in principle that
please accept the offerings. To conclude, one has to remember that the
purpose of preparing and offering food to the Supreme Power is to show
one's devotion and gratitude to Him.

People are deluded by unlimited desires. They live in a dream world, forgetting the Supreme Consciousness. It is very important to keep desires under control and place a ceiling on them. Instead of inordinately spending for our own pleasure, we should offer money for the relief of the poor and needy. Do not make the mistake of thinking that giving away your money for good and noble purposes is all that is needed to practice ceiling on desires. While giving to the needy is good, it is equally important that you do not allow your own desires to continue to multiply; both should happen. You must curtail your desires, as materialistic desires lead to a restless and disastrous life. Desires are a prison. You can be freed only by restraining your wants. Limit them to only what you truly need in life. This is the real meaning of ‘Ceiling on Desires’.

- Divine Discourse, Nov 21, 1988.

Happiness is everyone's true desire which cannot be denied. There is
a saying that one should attain divine feelings, divine knowledge
and divine bliss to have absolute happiness and peace rather than acquiring
just material happiness only in life. Bhakti, yoga and meditation, positive
thinking etc. are the few necessary procedures to achieve divine bliss.
To reduce stress/tension, anxiety, overcoming from negative thinking fears,
removal of unwanted doubts, unwanted dreams and desires, etc, Bhakthi
Yoga is one of significant method and it should be practiced with total confidence.
Initially one can start with the prayer with divine love which certainly would
provide some lead towards the bhakthi yoga. If one does this regularly,
one can notice that there is a gradual change in one's mind and emotional,
sorrow feelings, etc would get wiped off.

Jealousy will make a person see bad, even in the good! It will bring about your destruction in many ways. Root it out of you at the earliest. If not, the next one to come is ego. Ego destroys discrimination, drives out human qualities, and turns you into a demon. Doubt, jealousy, ego and lack of faith are four very strong evil qualities. Even if any one of those four are present in anyone, without doubt, they will be ruined over time. Develop good conduct and earnestly practice good behavior as much as possible, then you will attain the status of a noble person over time. Never do any work with the desire for money or any other benefit. Expecting the result of work is greediness. The fruit of the action depends upon the action itself. Can you expect 100/100 even before you start studying? Instead of studying keeping marks in view, you must study because it is y our duty, and do it with total dedication.

'My Dear Students', Vol 2, Ch 1.

Some feel despite the fact of having performed the prayer or worship
the Supreme Power has not answered. Disobedience, unrighteous method,
wrong motives, desires, etc are the few reasons that may not produce
desired results. Some people avoid prayer or worship, if they do not
get instant or spontaneous results. Any prayer with faith in the
Supreme Power can bring a change or circumstances. In fact,
faith is the spiritual substance that brings a change and enables a
person to understand the reality. Our Great Puranas, Ithihasas,
other Scriptures, etc are the main source of nourishment to get a proper
feed back and a righteous path. An occasional or casual reading of Scriptures
will not bring the desired results or generate faith in a person, unless
one has zeal and dedication while doing so. One has to join a religious circle
or a Satsang where elite persons could guide. In fact submission to
the Supreme Power is a life-long endeavor. Heart, mind, and body have
to be completely united in this task. Perfect practice brings divine
attributes. Faith in the Supreme Power is a spiritual gift. Further, it
brings in life a kind of mental peace, joy, and hope even in difficult times.

Food is considered God, as it is the source of a person’s life, body, mind, and character. Eat only what you need. Do not be greedy and take more than you can eat and waste the rest. Wasting food is a great sin; your surplus can feed another stomach. Even a major part of the food you consume, the gross part, is thrown out as waste matter. A minute amount of the food, which is the subtle part, is assimilated by the body and flows as blood. And a minuscule amount, which is the subtlest part of the food, makes up your mind. Therefore mind is the reflection of the food consumed. When demonic tendencies arise in our minds, know that it is from the food we consume. To receive real nourishment, pay attention to the quality of food that you eat and let it be very pure, clean, sanctified, and Satwik.

There is a saying that food not only nourishes the body
but also purifies the mind. Satwik food also paves way for
a change in lifestyle. It does not abuse the body, particularly
one would not get obesity being a balanced diet and also helps to
remain fit, energetic and healthy always, besides it is easy
to digest. No doubt it has multiple advantages over a long period.
Further, it enhances immunity, perfection of mind and calmness,
generates good attitude, virtues, etc. Our Scriptures clearly
advices about the necessity for eating vegetarian light foods,
such as fresh vegetables, milk, fruits, grains like rice and wheat,
pulses, green vegetables, etc. Above all, Satwik food enables
to attain clarity and creativity in the mind and enhances
Satva virtues, particularly humility.

[TD="width: 690"]Whatever a great man does, the same is done by others as well. He sets up a standard, and it is followed by the world. There is nothing in the three worlds, O Arjuna, for Me to achieve, nor is there anything to gain which I have not gained. Yet I continue to work.
Bhagavad-Gita, Chapter III , Verses, 21-22.

Explaining why He accompanies devotees to temples, Baba once explained that unless He Himself sets an example in this regard, He could not expect others to do like-wise. Example is better than precept!
We may say that only Avatars can afford to set up examples! If we analyse carefully, we find that most of our contemporary ills arise by not following the above precept and example. How little do we realise that we cannot have two sets of values. One for ourselves, another for our children, for friends, or parents, for subordinates, in short for everybody else! We tell lies to our children (Oh! he is too young to understand) and are surprised that they turn out to be liars, even towards us! We expect praise from others, but hardly give any; we expect to be forgiven, but are unprepared to forgive others. We go to office late, and leave early (especially if we are `bosses') and yet take exception, if a “subordinate” does it. If we are discourteous to others, we should not be surprised if others are discourteous to us.
If we are in doubt, let us observe the way Baba lives, acts and speaks. He calls us “Premaswaroopulaara”, He speaks in a sweet voice, even when He chides. When we get into the Interview Room, we do not meet a condescending Avatar; we meet the most considerate, courteous Being. He does not say “You are like this”; He says “Let us not be too strict with others; we are all like that"; He says “we" not “you". He never addresses us in the second person singular always in the second person plural—the traditional form of addressing respectfully.
Thus Baba is “setting up a standard” for us to follow, if we care to understand. There is nothing for Him in the three worlds to achieve, nor gain. Yet He continues to work!
