Divinity is the manifestation of Prema and Kshama. The virtue of Kshama (forbearance, unlimited patience and ability to forgive and forget) is not achieved by reading books or learnt from an instructor. Nor can it be received as a gift from someone. This prime virtue, can be acquired solely by self effort, by facing squarely diverse problems, difficulties of various sorts, anxieties, suffering as well as sorrow. In the absence of Kshama, you will become susceptible to all kinds of evil tendencies. Hatred and jealousy easily take root in a person lacking this virtue. Kshama gives complete protection to the one who possesses it. Hence Kshama, a priceless possession, is the greatest, grandest and the noblest amongst all virtues.Kshama is all encompassing.

On the morning of Thursday, 22 March 1979, in Prasanthi Nilayam, when I was granted an interview by Bhagawan, He produced a most beautiful ring for me in which Swami's face was shown in a purple hue. (Later I felt that Swami should have given me a different picture of Himself as I did not feel that this picture did full justice to Him). However, the ring was a tight fit. That morning I was both happy and a little worried. As a surgeon I had to take the ring out often to wash my hands and operate etc. The ring would come out only with difficulty. Moreover, I felt that my wife, who did not accompany me to India on this occasion, would have liked something too from Bhagawan; but how was I going to ask for a small boon like this. Swami called me in again on the same evening and, no sooner had the interview started, He inquired of me if the ring was a little too tight for me. "Surgeons need to wash their hands a lot," said Swami. He ask ed me to give Him the ring. Holding it He blew on it once and placed the ring back on my left ring finger. It was a neat fit and could be put on and taken off easily. I prostrated myself in thanks and did not examine the ring closely. Swami asked me to look at the picture. This too had changed and there was a most beautiful pose, a smiling face, and the hand raised in blessing: "Why fear when I Am here.” Soon after He inquired after my wife and produced a lovely locket with His bust on one side and "Om" in Sanskrit on the other. "This is for your wife," He said sweetly.

Difficulties and pain help one to nurse and build the capacity for patience and forbearance. However, due to mental weakness and ignorance, people invariably shun painful experiences and distress. Do not be weak; be brave and welcome troubles. Let them come; more the merrier. Only with such a courageous attitude can you bring out the kshama (forbearance) hidden within you. Can you get promoted to a higher class without passing an examination? It is only when you secure the prescribed marks and pass the examination, you are declared eligible to advance to the higher class. While preparing for the examination you have to face stress and many difficulties but how sweet the promotion is! So welcome troubles as tests that prepare you for higher things and be happy when troubles descend on you, because that is when kshama truly blossoms.

It is essential for everyone to develop a habit of prayer daily to the
Supreme Power in an effective way with all humility surrendering
absolutely to HIM. It is impossible to carry on one's life without God's
blessings. Everyone has to do puja every day. The Puja can be of
any type such as Puja, Namasmaran, Bhajans in Satsang, Visiting
Temples, etc.

One has to have purity of both external and internal. One has to have
a good motive or intention to do all spiritual activities besides to execute
all good deeds in life. Though purity of external body is essential, purity
of mind develops pure thoughts. One should give up egoism and selfish
attitudes. Internal purity is more essential than external purity, because
it depends on the purity of mind and heart. In order to derive pure mind,
good thoughts and pure food are inescapable. Mental purity can lay a
foundation for a person to have ethical training and practice meditation.
In order to achieve success in meditation, undisturbed mind is imperative.
Without purity of mind, one cannot achieve spiritual progress in life. Purity
of mind of a person leads him/her to a right path.

Most people think or God and become devotees after going through distress and grief. If life was "full of bed of roses" how many of us would chant God's name and follow his teachings. Sai Devotees travel far distances to Puttaparthi only when they have a urge to merge with divine. This urge comes out of distress, grief, loneliness, and other problems.

In Mahabharata, Krishna asked Kunti (mother of Pandavas) to wish for something. This happened after all Kauravas were destroyed and Pandavas won. Kunti told Krishna that she wanted vanvas to jungle. According to Kunti, she had lived in kingdom her entire life and so was not thinking of God while in kingdom. If she were to go exile, she would be thinking of God all the time. That's what Kunti wanted.

We generally think of God and we become tough only when we experience pain and distress. As Swami stated in his message below,

"So welcome troubles as tests that prepare you for higher things and be happy when troubles descend on you, because that is when kshama truly blossoms. "

The observance of morality in daily life, the divinization of all actions and thoughts related to life, and adherence to ideals - all of these together constitute culture. Culture means that which sanctifies the world, which enhances the greatness and glory of a country, and which helps to raise the individual and society to a higher level of existence. The process of refinement or transformation is essential for improving the utility of any object or life. For instance, paddy has to be milled and its husk removed before the rice is fit for cooking. This is called Samskriti or transformation. This means, doing away with unwanted elements and securing the desirable ones. With regard to people, Samskriti (culture) means getting rid of bad qualities and cultivating virtues. The cultured person is one who has developed good thoughts and good conduct.

- Divine Discourse, Jan 14, 1990

If a person performs good deed, his eternal body or flesh alone
gets to death, while his/her inner spirit never dies. No one in
the universe can overcome or get out of sins or shortcomings
in life without the blessings of Supreme Power. Even if one
desires to change his/her own deeds or actions or wants to
alter his/her actions, only the Supreme Power that directs the
mind and heart for a transformation. If one does not have the
spirit of Supreme Power dwelling in him/her, he/she is not HIS
devotee. Instant transformation is just not possible unless
one makes sincere efforts. One can attain success in life
only with the blessings of Supreme Power's blessings. Thus, the
glory and credit go to HIM. The power that emanates from
the Supreme Power to a devotee is only through the spirit and
involvement that he has in HIM. Without HIS blessings, one
cannot understand HIS divine power.

Life on earth is possible only because of the Sun. For mankind that is caught up in a meaningless existence and going through an endless round of futile activities, the Sun God stands out as an exemplar of tireless and selfless service. He enjoys no respite from work. He is above praise and censure. He carries on his duties with absolute equanimity. Everything he does is only for the wellbeing of the world and not for causing any harm. Thus the Sun God teaches us the supreme example of humble devotion to duty, without any conceit. Everyone must learn how to do their duties with devotion and dedication, just like the Sun. Doing one's duty is the greatest Yoga (Spiritual path), as pointed out by Krishna in the Gita. Hence, let your actions and thoughts be good. You will then experience the bliss divine.

- Divine Discourse, Jan 15, 1992.

Spiritual awakening is essential for everyone to proceed towards
the path of transformation in life. A person's life is governed by
a combination of selfish desire, personal ambition and greed, etc.
A conscious commitment is imperative in a person's life with
self-discipline to proceed towards the spiritual path with a clear
awareness. Spiritual experience in life normally occurs in a person
when there is a willingness to proceed in the right path after getting
the awareness and the necessity for it. In other words one has
to have a natural urge. Many people get the awareness through
reading of enlightening articles or pravachanams. Such people, once
when they get the awareness, spend a majority of time, by doing creative
deeds related to divine deeds. Ones a person understands the
awareness and proceeds in the right spiritual path, his/her life will
be very attractive and he/she yields the most profound stages of
peace and happiness. Further, when a person proceeds on the right
spiritual path, nothing can phase him/her out or shake him/her from the
divine thinking. Spiritual experience can be attained through yoga classes
meditation, Nama Sangeerthanam, association with Satsang, etc.

Your speech should always be good. Never utter harsh words. Speak softly and sweetly. That is why I tell you often, “You cannot always oblige, but you can always speak obligingly.” Say what you have to say without harshness. Speak softly so that only the person for whom your words are intended may hear you. Such soft and sweet speech should be developed. Good vision, good listening, and good speech lead to good thoughts. “As are your thoughts, so is the result.” Right thoughts lead to right action. Without good thoughts, it is not possible to perform good actions. Good thoughts cannot be acquired by reading scriptures or by listening to the teachings of the preceptor. Through self-effort you should put your senses of sound, touch, form, taste, and smell to right use. Your self-effort alone can ensure proper spiritual practice.

- Divine Discourse, Apr 28, 1999.

Worship of a person towards the Supreme Power must show loyalty to HIM
for the creation as a Human Being in this Universe. Unless worships properly
with sincerity, one cannot get His grace or blessings in life. One cannot escape
from the sins or problems/troubles unless one seeks HIS blessings. Worshiping the
Supreme Power is not to be taken lightly and it has to be viewed with a proper
attitude because everyone looks towards HIM for HIS guidance and direction
in lives to have an everlasting peaceful life. One can worship HIM in any
manner to seek HIS blessings by singing HIS Nama or praying or studying HIS
Puranas or Scriptures. When one worships HIM sincerely, one gets good virtues
such as forgiveness, tenderness in mind and heart, justice towards good deeds,
righteousness, purity of mind, kindness and love towards fellow devotees and
others.

But these difficulties must be overcome to enjoy the bliss of the Divine, just as the sugarcane has to be crushed and its juice converted into jaggery to enjoy the permanent sweetness of jaggery. Enduring bliss can be got only by overcoming trials and tribulations. Gold cannot be made into an attractive jewel without it being subjected to the process of melting in a crucible and being beaten into the required shape. When Bhagawan address devotees as Bangaaru (Golden one), He is considering you as very precious. Go through the vicissitudes of life with forbearance and become attractive jewels. Do not allow yourself to be overwhelmed by obstacles. Lead exemplary lives with self-confidence and firm faith in God.

True and Selfless Love manifests as sacrifice. Such love knows no hatred. It envelops the entire universe, and is capable of drawing near even those who are seemingly far away. In the phenomenal world, you come across many shades and derivatives of this primordial love. You love your father, mother, brother, sister, spouse, friends and others. In all such cases, there is always a tinge of selfishness somewhere or the other. Divine love, on the other hand, is totally free of even the slightest trace of selfishness. You must surrender to such love, become completely submerged by it, and experience the bliss it confers. True and Selfless Love manifests itself as sacrifice. For acquiring Divine love, the quality of Kshama (forbearance and patience) is a vital necessity. Every individual must cultivate this noble quality.

- Divine Discourse, May 25, 2000.

There is a vast difference between human and divine love. A person's
real condition can be assessed from his emotional feelings. When a person
is in a desperate state of condition, though only a few relatives or friends
may come forward to give a solace for a few minutes or hours, but then
the Supreme Power loves the devotee in spite of his irreconcilable mind.
This Universe is full of sorrow/trouble or sin, physical pain, mental anguish,
etc. but if one depends on the Supreme Power, HE will not certainly deny
the devotee to give the devotee a relief from such things. Sometimes
friends may betray, even spouse and children may abandon but if one
depends on the Supreme Power, even the hopeless may also become hopeful
because of HIS blessings. Hence one should not fail to put his/her faith
or love on the Supreme Power. If one sincerely adopts the love towards
the Supreme Powr, it does bring hope and joy, eliminating the hopelessness
and bitterness once for all.
