Inner cleanliness should be your first aim. You may have fine vegetables, excellent spices, salt and the best of pulses; the cook may be a master of the art. The oven you use may be the best one can get. But if the copper vessel used for cooking is not tinned, thesambar (soup) will turn into something dangerous; that which cannot be consumed. The dish prepared becomes poisonous if the interior of the vessel is unfit for cooking. So too, you must cleanse your inner being. Sathkarma (virtuous deeds) and Sadachara (good habits) along with prayers act as lining for the vessel of your heart (hridaya pathra), where emotions, impulses and instincts are cooking. Prayer will tame all the instincts like a wild elephant is trained to perform tricks in a circus ring.

He who wishes to seek the blessings of God, must take all care to speak only
the truth and justice and nothing else. We must have sympathy on people who are in distress
and must have a frame of mind to forgive the faults of others too. We should be in readiness
to oblige and help others to put them at ease in times of crisis. We should have the
qualities of tolerance, self discipline, self restraint, unconditional devotion to God and speak fair to
the people and above all sincerity in our deeds and actions. We must not fail to do our duties
of Karma. If we adhere to all these, we can certainly and surely attain the blessings of God.

Everyone earnestly with a humble desire plan according to their capacity to
offer a nominal amount as monthly donation to a non-profit organization, that is
doing sincere service to the homeless aged and children in our locality. We
can also offer them some home furnishings, if we have additional ones, or house
hold items like utensils, etc. either to a person or donate them to the Orphanages.
One can donate books and toys too to the Children in the Orphanages. If we
have spare money, we can plan to buy non-perishable food items and offer them
to the Orphanages besides spare clothes if we have. We must always listen to
those who are having problems and help them as far as possible without making
a commitment. As Baba says, we must come forward to help the needy, poor
and economically down trodden.

There is a saying that an angry King lost both War and the Kingdom.
We should never be angry because anger destroys of our wisdom and we may not
know as to what we are doing.
Similarly, Greed is such a dangerous thing that we may not be able to control it.
It destroys our work culture and spoils the atmosphere in the Office and in fact
it kills our dreams too.
Therefore, as Baba says, we should discard or eliminate all these bad qualities in
us so as to have a pure devotion and bakthi towards God.

You must endeavour to please the Guru and win his favour by obeying his teachings and serving him lovingly. No matter where they live, those lives that are untouched by spiritual practices, noble qualities and serene environment imply that they do not even possess elementary gratitude to the Guru. They may chant slogans like Krishnarpanam (dedicating it to God) but their acts reveal only deha-arpanam (dedication to the body)! Modify your conduct to win your Guru’s grace; then, wisdom and bliss is yours. Instead, if you are disobedient and critical through egoism and want of faith, you cannot be blessed by the vision of the Truth. As the cow takes to her calf, so the Guru will draw theSishya (disciple) to himself and grant him the milk of grace and bliss. A man's successful life is mainly based on the process of seeking, approaching
and knowing the Truth. Knowledge what we gain is rather acquired only through
our learning process. The wisdom thus gained is the ability to apply this knowledge
through the experiences. Many spend their life in search of knowledge to attain
wisdom. Once we are able to attain the spiritual knowledge, we can humbly seek
the spiritual powers also. The next comes the Spiritual Wisdom. Spiritual wisdom
can only be attained through undeviating or concentrated devotion and faith in the
Guru who takes us towards the illumination and eradicate the feelings of illusion,
false perceptions, etc. It is he, who dispels the darkness of ignorance in us and
illuminates our mind. If we abide by the guidelines and instructions with complete
devotion, we can certainly achieve the spiritual knowledge.

Prasnottara Vahini – Brahmavidya and Women
by
Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Questioner: You were talking of strict regimen; men too should follow this, is it not?

Sri Sathya Sai Baba: Of course! They too are flesh and blood, bone and marrow; they too are afflicted with illness. Each and every person who is afflicted with birth and death and suffering from this cycle is in need of this medicine. And, whoever helps himself to this treatment has to follow the regimen too. Man or woman, whoever neglects the regimen, cannot get rid of the illness. Men cannot afford to say that they are free from it; they have to stick to it closely and observe it strictly. Even if they have had Brahmopadesam (initiation into the spiritual path of Brahma-realisation), if they are devoid of virtues like Sama and Dama they cannot save themselves, whether they are men or women.

Questioner: But then, Swami, why do many scholars learned in the Sastras declare that women have no right for acquiring Brahmavidya? What is the reason?

Sri Sathya Sai Baba: There is no reason at all in declaring that women are not entitled to Brahmavidya. Vishnumurthy taught Bhudevi the glory of the Githa; Parameswara taught Parvathi the Brahmathathva through the Guru-Githa. That is what the Guru-Githa means when it says, “Parvathi Uvaacha”. What do these words mean? Besides, Easwara initiated Parvathi into Yogasastra and Manthrasastra. The Brihadaranyaka Upanishad mentions that Yajnavalkya taught Maitreyi this very same Brahmavidya. This is a well known fact. Now, you can yourself judge and draw your own conclusion whether women are entitled to Brahmavidya or not.

Questioner: There are some others, Swami, who declare that women are not entitled to Brahmacharya and Sanyasa. Is it true? Do the Vedas prohibit it?

Sri Sathya Sai Baba: The Vedas have two sections: Karmakanda and Jnanakanda. The Karmakanda is for beginners, for the undeveloped; and the Jnanakanda is for the more advanced, the developed intelligences. There is no reference to men or women in connection with these. The beginners are worldly; how can they understand the immortal message of the Jnanakanda about the Atma? In the Brihadaranyaka we have mention of Gargi and Maitreyi who shine in the spiritual splendour of Brahmacharya and Sanyasa. In the Mahabharatha also, we have Subha Yogini and other women who are ideal women, full of virtue.

Questioner: Can women win Brahmajnana, even while leading the householder’s life?

Sri Sathya Sai Baba: Why not? Madaalasa and others were able to get Brahmajnana while in the Grihastha stage of life, the house-holder status. You must have heard of these from the Yogavasishta and the Puranas, how they attained the height of auspiciousness, Brahmajnana itself. Then again, do not the Upanishads declare that Kaathyayini, Sarangi, Sulabha, Viswaveda and others were adepts in Brahmajnana?

Questioner: Swami, are there any women who have attained Brahmajnana while in the Grihasdtha stage? And who attained it while in the Sanyasa stage? Or any who realised it while in the Vaanaprastha stage? Are there women who got it in the Brahmacharya stage of life?

Sri Sathya Sai Baba: Do not think that there are no women who have realised Brahmajnana while in any one of these stages. Choodaala attained it while a Grihastha; Sulabhayogini won it while a Sanyasini; Maitreyi attained it while in the Vaanaprastha stage of life; and Gargi got it in the Brahmacharya stage. There were other great women of Bharath who have achieved this height. Why, there are even today many who are of this great category. I simply mentioned some four names because you came up with that question now; so do not in the least lose enthusiasm. There is no need for loss of heart.

Questioner: When we have so many examples of women who have attained Brahmajnana, how is it that so many argue against it? Why do they impose limitations on women?

Sri Sathya Sai Baba: It is sheer absurdity to deny women the right to earn Brahmajnana. But in worldly matters, it is necessary that some limitations are respected by them. They are laid down only in the interests of Dharma and for Loka-kalyana. For the sake of the upkeep of morals and for social health in the world, women have to be bound by them. They are too weak to maintain certain standards of life and discipline; they have some natural handicaps; that is the reason for these limitations.
This does not mean any fundamental inferiority. Why, even Pundits and men learned in the Sastras acquire their Jnana through the reverential homage they pay to the Feminine Deity, Saraswathi. The patron Deity of Vidya, as well as of Wealth and Jnana are all three feminine. They are Saraswathi, Lakshmi and Parvathi. Even in customary correspondence, when women are addressed, they are referred to as, “To…who is equal to Lakshmi” etc. You always speak of Maatha-Pithaa, Gowri-Sankara, Lakshmi-Narayana, Seetha-Rama, Radha-Krishna etc. The feminine name comes first and then the masculine. From this itself you can gather how much reverence is paid to women here.

Questioner: The distinction between man and woman – do you condemn it as Mithya-jnana or do you value it as Atma-jnana?

Sri Sathya Sai Baba: My dear fellow! The Atma has no such distinction; it is eternally conscious, pure, self-effulgent. So, it can only be Mithya-jnana; it can never be Atma-jnana. It is a distinction based on the Upadhi, the mask, the Limitation. The Atma is neither masculine, feminine nor neuter; it is the form that limits and deludes and that wears the names.

The frog caught and held in the mouth of a cobra, unaware of its fate, flicks at the snake’s tongue as if it were a fly to eat. So too, you seek joy and earn pain, hunt for pleasure and bag grief. You attach yourself to the body that decays, and let go of God. Thousands of wise men have advised about this a million times. However their words have not fallen on the soft soil of the heart and have not been watered by the tears of contrition. From now on, let your heart with clean consciousness, be a lamp. Pour into it the oil of Namasmarana (chanting of the Divine Name). Place the wick of Self-Control and keep it in position, so that the gusts of joy and grief do not scotch the flame. Light it with noble thoughts like Aham Brahmasmi (I am God). Then, you will not only have Light, but also become a source of Light.

Truth and Righteousness are lasting or existing for ever. They always stay
unchanged even over the period of times i.e. past, present and future. We
read in Gita, "whenever there is a decline of Dharma i.e. righteousness and
a resurgence of Adharma (unrighteousness), HE (Bhagawan) incarnates HIMSELF.
In that HE says that righteousness is imperiable." Further, we learn that it is like the
Sun being covered by the Cloud for sometime. The Sun is not apparently not
seen or invisible. But is does remain there and shines again, when the cloud
moves away. Like that Truth is similar to Sun. Its effulgence is righteousness.
Truth and Righteousness are inseparable. They are like matter and energy.

In a game of football, the players on either side continue to kick the ball till it is sent to the goal. They must see to it that the ball does not go beyond the two posts that define the goal. The goal of life too consists of two posts: secular and spiritual. You are born as a human with the goal of not being born again. You must live within the frames of secular and spiritual pursuits. The six bad qualities — lust, anger, greed, desire, pride and jealousy are on one side, and the good qualities — truth, right conduct, peace, love, nonviolence and sacrifice are on the other side. The game is between these two teams. If you tread along the divine path you can experience peace, and also share it with others. Then you will be liberated.

As Baba says life is a game. There will be some obstacles. In that case
we have to think of some strategies to win over the situation. We do not know the
game of our life is going to be short or long as against the foot ball games or other games
that are predetermined for a specific duration. As we have some game theory to those,
we also ought to have some concepts in our life. We should not envy others, retaliate
if some bad happens to us, be nice to everyone, hold religious beliefs, trust in God, etc
and above all that we should earnestly try to set a goal to accomplish the blessings
of God through devotion, prayer, etc. We should not try to escape from this Game
and fail to dispel the darkness in our mind.

Good Teachers always understand the minds of the Students and give
them ample opportunities to learn new and good things in life. They will plan in
such a way the program-mes to enable the children to execute them without any
distractions in the minds of the students. They also plan to have program-mes
to motivate the children through lively approaches. In fact, some teachers become
examples to the children and they demonstrate good things at times. They also
teach as to how to meet the intended requirement in the life and help the children
to acquire the deadline. As Baba says, the Guru-Sishya relationship is very essential
and the Sishya must try to accomplish the assigned things, despite the problems
that may arise from time to time in the life while executing such tasks.

The mind must become the servant of the intellect, not the slave of the senses. It must discriminate and detach itself from the body. Like the ripe tamarind fruit, which becomes loose inside the shell, it must be unattached to this shell or casement which is the body. Strike a green tamarind fruit with a stone and you cause harm to the pulp inside. But do this to a ripe fruit and what happens? It is the dry rind that falls off, nothing affects the pulp or the seed. The ripe aspirant does not feel the blow of fate or fortune. It is the unripe man, who is wounded by every blow. So too, your ignorance must fall off through your own efforts. It will not come to you as a gift or miracle. Truth, Bliss and Peace that is won by your own struggle with untruth and injustice will be the lasting treasure for you.

We cannot say that all beautiful, talented and rich people have always happiness and peace.
One has to identify the Love and peace, which are the real goals for searching the bliss
of God. Meditation, prayer can help us to break the habit or culture of clinging on to false
identities. Only the Love with our brothers and sisters in the Community as a whole can
indirectly bring peace of heart and harmony. Many people fail to realize at times owing to
deep attachment over their feelings. Discipline, pros and cons also facilitate one to make a room,
to have the right decisions and attain peace of mind. Sometimes, while we do Community Service
we do also fetch love and peace of mind, rather complete satisfaction, which throws away
the adverse situations making one to be capable of developing into a new person.

Sincere repentance is enough to transmute sin into sanctity. The Lord graciously accepts contrition and pours His blessings. Did not the dacoit Rathnakara, who was engaged in acts of sin until the moment when wisdom dawned, become a saint through repentance? He became Sage Valmiki (the author of the epic Ramayana), is it not? His story is proof of the value of contrition. You may ask, is it enough to be free from the effects of sin alone? Should not the effects of punya (merit) be given up too? Yes, you should. Just as the roaring forest fire reduces to ashes everything in its way; so too the mighty conflagration of wisdom (Jnana) will consume and destroy all sin and all merit.

He Bhagawan - You are the light to us and you continue to be the light of our
homes and the world. Let your light shine on everyone of us. There is a tremendous
responsibility on everyone in this world to realize the object of our birth or jananam.
We should not be short lived only for the sake of material benefits, self-serving and
follow unethical ways leading to no result or destruction of our life without realising
the effects of punnya and sin.

Some people do not know as to how to avoid unhappiness, suffering, etc
and are also unable to ignore its existence in their mind, perhaps may be they
are in the association of people who are not contemplating or concentrating
on the good deeds. Such people must sincerely try to conduct the path of
Dharma and try to be in the association of spiritual aspirants, whiling keeping away
from the people who are in the practice of counseling only bad things and who
have neither fear nor any ill-feeling toward commitment of sins. A serene
atmosphere like Temples or Satsangs of Sai Ram can bring down their sufferings and
give them tranquility.

Earnest and steady faith (Sraddha) is essential to acquireJnana. In addition you must also possess a deep yearning to imbibe the teachings of your Guru. Be very vigilant; do not yield to sloth or to company that is not congenial or encouraging. To escape such evil influences and to strengthen your mind, mastery over senses is required. But remember, want of faith or steadiness is not as destructive as the venom of doubt. Doubt is born out of ignorance (Ajnana); it penetrates into your heart and breeds there - it is the source of all disaster! Arise and engage yourself in your daily activities, giving up desire for its results and with complete faith. Then you will acquire wisdom and win liberation.

The world is a structure raised on one strong pillar - ”I". This "I” is dormant during your deep sleep and hence there is no world so far as you are concerned. Similarly before you were born, and after you die, there is no world of which you are conscious. To acquire and stay fixed in this Jnana (wisdom), you must pass through the preparatory schools of Karma (dedicated activity) and Upaasana (contemplation). Dedicated activity helps you cleanse the heart of egoistic impulses. Contemplation helps you to consistently focus attention on the Universal, the Absolute. Then jnaana emerges and stays within you for ever. Once you win that jnaana, you are the equal of the wisest, for there is nothing more to know.

By the time it rains, if seeds have not been sown, will there be any crop in the field? If seeds are sown but there is no rain, will any cultivation happen? Both rain and seeds are needed for the harvest to be reaped. Likewise, Divine Grace will bear fruit only when there is human effort too. When there are good thoughts in the mind, they will be reflected as noble actions; on the other hand if the thoughts are ill-disposed, the fruits thereof will be equally bad. Different devotees are bound to differ in their ways of worshipping God. But whatever the method of worship, there must be one-pointed devotion. Love towards God is devotion. Love towards the world is attachment. Develop love for God.

We are all the children of God and with HIS blessings only, we have born
in this world as a human being, which is a rare one. God wants every children of HIM
should be happy. We must ask ourselves when we are alone, are we in search of God,
do we keep our self-interests on top of everything, do we help others at least for a while,
etc. First of all, we must try to love our neighbours. Sometimes, when we are
completely devoted in our own family interests, we fail to look to others including
our neighbours. Instead of Self-centered, one need to love everyone and help others
to the extent possible. If something good is done to others, their Blessings itself will
be equal to that of God.

Meditation and Contemplation helps everyone to eradicate the emotional
and mental clutter. Sometimes, our desires, memories and fascination do
disturb our contentment level. Contentment does not always remain in
a passive state. In order to come out of this, as Baba says, we should
have to think of Sarveswara with full devotion and participate in Nama
Sangeerthanam in Satsangs. This will certainly help us to get relief from
our stress and strains and would enable us to attain the Bliss of God.
