Om Namo Bhagavate Sivanandaya!

Namaste!

Today (September 8th) is the 125th birthday
anniversary of revered Sri Swami Sivanandaji. In
honour of this occasion we uploaded an article titled
"The Spirit of Ananda Kutir" by Smt. Savitri Asopa.
This article is at:
The Spirit of Ananda Kutir

The same is attached below for our reflection.

An article by Sri Swami Krishnanandaji titled
"Memories of Gurudev Swami Sivananda" has been posted
at:
Memories of Gurudev Swami Sivananda

Yours in the service of Gurudev,

Pannirselvam

During one of our practices in our Satsang, where meditation is taught, the teacher
was firm in his direction that it should not be taken very casual or as a fun act. He
emphasized only through concentrated mediation one can gain knowledge and love
towards God. According to him, the mind should be pure keeping away all other
thought processes and it should be like a mirror backing the Light of pure Soul.

Further, his repeated instruction was on upholding the mind and free it from other activities
and merging it with the pure Soul, the Supreme power. He suggested some methods
for doing meditative practices viz.

One has to adjust the position so that it is symmetrical, upright and open, may be little
uncomfortable at the beginning, however one should not lead to sleeping.
Close the eyes and gently focus the attention on the Supreme Power in front, between the
eyebrows. Concentrate on and listen to one's breathing and can notice the rise and fall of the
abdomen on each inhalation and exhalation. Now come to awareness to include the sounds
around – outside and inside the room. Now one can find the mind tending to move here
and there. When that happens, one has to just bring the attention back to the breathing and
the sounds one could hear. Now one should sit and keep the mind calm to a possible extent.
Like this one has to start from 10 minutes a day and practice slowly. He was mentioning
the more one can practice, the longer one will be able to hold the mental focus. As Baba says
one has to meditate in solitude and silence to attain the Bliss of the Supreme Power.

To open a Divine Bank, noble thoughts and good deeds are imperative and must which
would only bring a safe deposit in one's Bank account. For example, in the Geetha
when the Great Warrior Arjuna raised a query towards Lord Krishna, "What exactly is
the gain of attaining You" Lord Krishna with a smile replied Oh Arjuna! What greater
benefit is there than attaining union with God!! This holy win over situation makes
a person really a Mahatma. While a normal person who always thinks about body
consciousness, and is quite often subjected to joy and grief, almost everyday, the
Mahatmas will be absolutely free from all dual experiences in life and will have a
constant happiness. Such people would be above everything. The reason being
they possess the purity in heart and will have no further birth and deaths". Because
they realize themselves about their mortal identity in particular. Such people would
always be active in mind and would not be driven by desires and addicted to bad deeds.
Further they remain unaffected by any attachment or hatred. Good thinking always
bring good results owing to positive approach. Positive thinking never brings negative
results. In sum total, it is true that generally good things come out from good thinking
only. Further possession of positive attitude brings a lot of potentiality within everyone.
Above all, good thinking facilitates to lead a better and happy life. Sometimes, one
may be able to overcome even the toughest part of life because of good thinking and
noble thoughts. Suppose someone happens to select or choose a wrong deed,
later on he/she will feel guilty and would not able to satisfy himself/herself or rectify it
because of wrong course of action. Good thinking and positive attitude drives away the
mental depression and creates a room for sustained happiness. As Baba says, one has to
have a tender heart, noble thoughts and good thinking towards prosperity in spiritual
life.

There is a saying that when a child is born into this world, according to the Chitra Gupta's
records, God is there along with other family members to witness the birth. That is why,
family members, irrespective of the religion, pray to the God for a safe delivery of the child
and the long life of the mother. Worship is nothing but chanting the Namas of the God and
thus bring the pleasure to HIM. In fact, one should practice worship as a natural event
just like our breathing and eating. There are many ways of worship and practices. Some adopt
chanting of Hindu Scriptures and Slokas, Bhajan Singing, Silence Meditation, listening to pravachanams,
submitting an offering, and even greeting other worshipers in a Satsangh. One should not think
worship is part of our life, rather it is our life journey. As we worship our work to earn our livelihood
one has to do dedicated worship and perform pujas, worship etc with an awareness of HIS presence.

True nature of a human being is divine. This innate nature is to be found in children; at that stage one is untouched by the pulls and stresses of the senses. So the child revels in its own reality - in joy, peace and love. As you grow make that stage steady, so that you may lead a dharmic (righteous) life. That is your duty. To discover your reality and to dwell in Divine Peace, you need not give up the world and take to asceticism. Detachment is the crucial boon you must win for yourself. You can cultivate it as easily at home as you can in the jungle! In addition, when you fix your mind on truth, you become dearer to God.

Worshiping God in India is not a new practice and dates back to ancient times.
For example, Sun Worship is a ritual followed by every person in the Villages, which is
the very first duty one does in the morning before starting any assignment. The Village
people believe that worshiping God gives them adequate energy and good health,
which in turn facilitates them to earn money and prosperity in life. Vedas and Puranas
have stressed the importance of sun worship. To be precise, all living beings on the
earth get their life force only due to the sun rays. Hindus therefore worship Sun as the life
giver. Sandhya Vandhanam is done immediately after sun rise and before sun set
every day by all brahmins. In fact, the Calendar that is followed in India starts with Sunday,
which is known Banuvaram in Sanskrit. According to the puranas, the Lord Surya travels
in a Charit being drawn by seven horses. He is said to be the son of Aditi and Kashyapa.
Aditya, Ravi, Bhaskara and Bhanu are the other names to Lord Surya.
According to the astrological magazines, the sun stays one month in each
Zodiac and takes around 365 days or 1 year to complete an orbit of the
12 signs. The magazines also state that Sun is beneficial for those born
under the zodiac signs of Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius. Further, the Astrology
says that a well-located Sun in horoscope interprets about intelligence, good health,
self confidence, courage, strength, independence, fame, success, power, and straight
forwardness etc. If the sun is in a position, otherwise, it denotes ill health, lack of
endurance, fear and dependency, etc. Sun Worship is very helpful for those who
face problems, hurdles and misfortune in their lives. It is also said to be helpful in curing
diseases like eye problems, heart problems, asthma etc. To get the benefits of Lord Surya
some people observe fast on Sundays and eat saltless food. Further, amongst the
9 planet Gods, i.e. Navagrahas, Sun is represented as No.1. There are several temples
dedicated to Sun and Suryanar Kovil, a famous one, in Tamil Nadu. There are other
temples too dedicated to Lord Surya.

As Baba says, let us all worship God in any form one likes and accept HIS blessings.

When Lalbahadur Sastri was the prime minister Thiagarajan, an officer woked under him got cancer and the doctors told that he will die within 3 months. One of the devotees of sai told him to go to puttaparthi and pray him for his life. He has no belief in sai and continued to undergo medical treatment After 2 months he realised that medical treatment will not cure him and he went to puttaparthi. While he was standing in the que for darshan sai asked him you have cancer?. He sai yes, and sai gave him vibuthi and he continued giving him vibudhi for 3 days and on 3rd day he told him that he has cancelled cancer. The officer still could not believe him and went to a nearest hospital and tested for cancer. The doctor asked him why he has undergone test when he has no disease. He was very happy and left his job and joined sai for doing service to human beings. This was published in kumudam, a tamil magazine.

As Baba says, development of character i.e. Bhakthi towards God is a treasure, which
would help one when one is really in need of God's assistance. To achieve every goal
character and conduct is very essential. That is why, when a boy/girl joins a school,
the character and conduct certificate is asked for from a reputed or well known persons
in the society. This is true wealth that can not be stealed by any one like material
wealth and it lives with everyone until their dying day. That is why, in a society, a
person is categorized or classified as being wealthy with regard to his or her character
if he/she has:

 • Honesty - towards himself/herself and towards those whom they come in contact with
 • Integrity - always being true to their words, and never sacrifice themselves or others for material gain
 • Responsible - discharging the designated duties admirably and with happiness

Added to that the ability of a person to look at the future and be a visionary, and one
who have the makings of an extremely successful person in guiding others in spiritual
activities i.e. Bhakthi or Devotional margam.

If a person develops this primary wealth, he/she will find the God/Goddess of good fortune
waiting to serve such a person in times of need. Suppose if the material wealth is dissipated,
one will find himself/herself in a place of hard knocks.

Divine Power deposited in a Divine Bank always stays with a person until his/her last breath.

While you should develop the habit of saving money in a bank for the sake of old age and rainy days, you must also start the habit of making deposits in the Spiritual Bank, so that you can truly be 'saved'. The currency and metals accepted in the Divine Bank are Truth, Love and Right Conduct. All words, feelings, actions, thoughts ringing with purity of these metals will be gladly accepted as deposits. So, as you take care of your savings deposit in the many worldly banks, you must make it a point to have an account and grow it in the Bank of the Divine too. When you are hard-pressed for money, you approach your bank seeking loans. The bank will help you, but only in proportion to your deposits. Similarly your Divine Banker will save you from distress and grief very quickly if you have deposited with Him the wealth of Truth, Love, Right Conduct and Peace.

One day chayadevi a devotee of saibaba asked him how it is possible for lord krishna to upadesh geeta (contains about 700 slogans) to Arjuna in a short time that to in a tensed war front. Baba told her to come to the riverside the next day. Next day before so many people surrounded him to see what arpudham he is going to perform. Saibaba put his hands under the river bed and took an elephant's tusk wherein the geethopadesh is carved meticulously in a grand manner. Now Baba addressed the crowd and said if the same carving is to be done by a human being it would take atleast a year whereas, I have done in seconds. Likewise, Krishna's upadesh took only a minute to convey his message to Arjuna and he has already prepared Arjuna's mind for the same. God can convert a minute/fraction of second in to a yugam or convert a year in a fraction of second.

Lord Krishna says that, if some one offers HIM with love and devotion a leaf, a flower, a fruit or
even little water HE would gladly accept it. Therefore, without anticipating any result, one should
act as a matter of duty to attain the bliss of Supreme power. Bhakti is one of the appropriate paths,
which everyone notices in the Gita. Bhakthi yoga may appear simple in the beginning but it needs
a dedicated mind and heart according to our Purnas. Once a person gets perfection and maturity,
it facilitates to envelop karma and Jnana yoga. Our ancient puranas emphasizes the importance of
bhakthi yoga towards spiritual development. It envelops worship of Idol or Picture and followed by
pilgrimage trips so as to attain the sophisticated processes of inner development. Spiritual knowledge
is very essential for development of Bhakthi yoga. One can obtain this through a Guru. Bhakthi or
devotion to God is just not for attaining material benefits or liberation only. For all this everyone
should do a selfless service with pure mind and heart to God.

Baba as Dattatreya
One day, the birth anniversary of Dattatreya was to be celebrated (in the month of Margasirsha on Panchami day). Several devotees had assembled in Shirdi. Among them was a wealthy man, a great scholar called Kaijack. He is not to be confused with Hijack! His name was Balwant Kaijack. As he was approaching the Masjid, Baba took His stick and waved it at the devotees, asking them to get away. He even beat some of them, shouting, "Saitan! Saitan!" No one could understand why Baba was behaving like this. "I am suffering from labour pains. Get away, all of you!" He shouted. In those days, Baba not only used to shout at people, but also wield the stick on them on occasions. He used even to throw the stick at fleeing persons. Every one used to be afraid of Him. They all fled from the place.
Some time later, He called all of them to come. "Balwant Kaijack, come!" He said. When Balwant came, Baba went inside the Masjid. Balwant went in and found that Baba was not there. He found a three-headed baby on the floor. Baba had declared that He was suffering from labour pains and there was a baby there. The three-headed child appeared to represent Dattatreya. It was a small ‘baby’ with a number of hands. Balwant recognised the ‘child’ as Dattatreya and called other devotees to come inside. They went in and on seeing the ‘child’ closed their eyes. At that instant Baba reappeared there. From that time onwards, people started looking upon Baba as the incarnation of Dattatreya.
Baba's lesson to Muslims

A controversy arose among the local people as to whether Baba was a Muslim or a Hindu. At one time He used to say: "Allah Malik! Allah Malik!" At other limes, He would say" "Dattatreya Malik!” Whenever He shouted "Allah Malik!" Muslims used to come to HIm in the Masjid. His appearance was very much like that of a Muslim. Hence, many Muslims used to come to Him. Hindus also used to come and offer incense to Him. The Muslims did not approve of what the Hindus were doing. The Hindus did not like the way Muslims revered Baba. Consequently, bitterness developed between the two communities.

One day, Mhalaspathi was sitting near Baba and doing some service to Him. Mhalaspathi was the priest in the Kandoba temple. The Muslims who were opposed to the presence of a Hindu priest near Baba, came with sticks and beat up Mhalaspathi. At every stroke, Mhalaspathi cried out "Baba!" "Baba!" Each time he shouted, the Name of Baba, the blow was borne by Baba. Mhalaspathi fell to the ground. Baba came out. Muslims had great reverence for Baba. Baba roared at the Muslim crowd: "Saitan! On the one side you worship Me and on the other you beat Me. Is this your devotion?" Baba was bleeding all over the body. The Muslims saw it and asked Baba who had beaten Him. "Did you not beat Me? Did you not beat Me?" said Baba pointing to several men in the crowd. They said: "We did not come near You at all. We only beat Mhalaspathi." "Who is in Mhalaspathi? I Am in him," declared Baba. &quo t;He has surrendered to Me and hence all his troubles are Mine."
On hearing this, the Muslims fell at Baba's Feet and craved for His forgiveness. Baba then summoned the Hindus and Muslims and told them: "Dear Children: You are all the progeny of one Mother." Thereby Baba demonstrated the Fatherhood of God and the Brotherhood of man. He wanted all differences of caste and creed to be eschewed. What mattered for mankind was the heart. One who is only concerned about his creed (matham) will never discover the Divine (Madhava). You must seek the Divine within you. Baba pointed out that all caste and creed distinctions related only to the body. Therefore, you should seek the Supreme in your inner consciousness

Dear sir,

I had noticed it too..I feel Baba wants us to go beyond offering material.

Just like a flower spreads its freshness and fragrance all around in the atmosphere,
the divine power cheers up the spirit of a person, when he/she possesses divine
virtues. Everyone knows prayer is one of the most ancient practices as well as the
simplest expressions one can do without any difficulty in any religion. In fact it is
a universal practice irrespective of the religion. But prayer is completely different
from the practices of meditation, which progressively quietens the mind of a person.
Once a person does prayer to the God without any diversion in mind, it reduces the
heaviness of one's heart, provided the prayers are done with complete faith and
self confidence. One should have a positive thinking while doing prayer. God knows
the devotees wishes and desires. Therefore, when a person completes the prayer,
he/she should have a complete confidence in the God, that HE will certainly listen to them
and would bless them. Some times, man's mind wanders all around without any spiritual
meaning. Real values can have meaning to man only when he actually practices the defined
spiritual path according to Hindu Scriptures, where no negative emotions will have a role
to play. For example, when a child is born, it crys while people around smile. May be
that the child is given an indication of the Karma by the God, when it is sent to the earth.
Therefore, one should lead a dharmic life with spiritual activities, so that when one leaves
this world can smile rather cry for the departure from this material world. One can see in
the religious scriptures, Lord Shiva is depicted meditating in the Padmasana. This practice
became familiar and it is practiced all over the world. All the yogas that are being taught
have the origin in our Hindu Scriptures including various Mudras which have scientific effects.
Therefore, as Baba says, one should follow the righteousness and truth in the life all along
to attain HIS blessings.

Hatred, greed, factions and fights are prevalent because God is discarded as superfluous or as superstition. The scriptures are the records of the thoughts and experiences of pure and unprejudiced love-filled seekers of truth. You will do well, if you trust them. They clearly explain the following tenets: Love alone prevails, Detachment is your true wealth, Unity alone is the truth and God alone should be your goal in life. Just as when light from the oil-based lamp gets dull, its wick is adjusted or fuel is added, it is about time the nobler and higher impulses of all human beings are invigorated.
Everyone must follow always Dharmic path to have a peaceful life. One should have good
thoughts, engage only in good deeds, and get associated with only Satsang and not with
evil forces. There is a quote in Sanskrit, Dharmo Rakshati Rakshitah, i.e. one who does
not follow Dharma, is said to be destroyed by Dharma, in other words, one who safeguards
or protects Dharma is always protected by Dharma. That is why, it is also defined like viz.
Rakshitam Dharma Rakshati. It is also explained as Dharma does not destroy or Dharma
can be destroyed. If we go through the Manu Smruthi, it is said that Dharma is an essence
of everything. Further it is amplified as either a philosophy or moral obligation or religious
doctrine or some kind commandments or any faith or belief. For example, assuming that
if gravitational force is to be destroyed, everything on the earth will certainly fall apart;
that is why it is said gravitational force keeps everything protected on earth. Can a man
destroy the gravitational force. One may say the Nature, to that but it is ultimately the
act of Supreme Power. Have we read anywhere that gravitational force can be eliminated or does the
gravitational force destroy anything; other than vulcano, earthquake, sunami, tidal waves, etc.
The terminology Dharma is also interpreted in the form of justice - that is pronounced in accordance
with the situation or circumstance, relating to moral values of life, sympathetic obligations
to individuals adopting practices of Dharma and in total practice of righteous conduct in every
sphere of activity. Though man is free to select anything as his option, he/she requires
to think and understand about the situation and activity including the chain of sequences on
account of implementation of such acts. Hence it is obligatory on the part of every person
to choose the right path. Suppose, if the person had no option or choice, then that is a
different thing and one has to face the consequences whether good or bad. Concluding Dharma as
a multifaceted terminology enveloping divine law, law of being, righteousness, religious practices,
good virtues, holding of justice/truth in any issue. That is why it is said righteousness
always wins, in other words truth only prevails and not the falsehood. If a person desires
to kill the Dharma practices, he or she faces consequences very soon and not dispensed with.
In fact the Supreme Power has created this Universe on the concept of Dharma.
Our epics talk about this with great examples and the repercussions too.

There is no saturation of love towards God in any one. In fact one would be happier
always to be in the midst of Spiritual people who do or perform divine activities.
People who regularly attend Satsang, Namasmaran or Bhajan, etc, will automatically be
attracted towards such programmes, and there is no question of saturation of love.
One cannot say love towards God is un-influential. This is not true. The love of God
is always influenced by the society in which a person resides or lives. People who attend
the programmes of Satsang, Bhajan, Pravachanams, etc. come to know about the
effects of Karma and as a result, have a desire to know about the past, present and future.
One should be very clear about the precious truth of God's existence. Once this
prevails in their hearts and mind, the darkness is driven away with the light of God.
Everyone comes to know the stages of ups and downs in life and also the same are
inevitable. Some may face the moments of relaxation while some may face periods
of tension. etc. If one learns and understands this concept and reality, one automatically
steps into God's presence much closer. Some may say, that they have prayed for so many
days for so many things, etc and they are deeply hurt because the results are not
positive. For some, their prayers remain unanswered resulting into disappointment, etc.
But of late, many talk about the love of God and slowly driving away their
ignorance prevails in them. This itself shows that Love towards God do not get
saturated.

Meditation helps to improve one's health and state of mind. In fact, meditation
can actually lower one's blood pressure, enhance immune system besides to have
better intuition, etc. Meditation is also powerful to reduce the stress, increase
creativity and also increase spiritually based values such as trust, faith and
confidence, etc. Practice of mounam helps in a way to reduce talking and to have
better control over the expressions of the senses. With the adoption of silence
one can get more physical and mental work done. The brain and nerves are soothed
in such a way that meditation becomes easier. Maintenance of silence helps to get
conserve energy towards thinking and introspection. It is seen from our ancient
records that Mahatma Gandhi used to observe Maunam every Monday, which he
began sometime during 1921 and maintained until his death in 1948. Similarly, the
great Indian Philosopher and Yogi Mr Aurobindo (1872-1950), observed maunam
for 17 years or so. Silence always helps in enhancing the value of spiritual
practices.

Faith is a plant of slow growth. Its roots go deep into the heart. Silence is the best spiritual practice to guard faith.
