You will all doubtlessly agree when I say that Divine Bliss is your greatest need. However, you cannot buy it from anywhere! It has to be earned the hard way, doing good deeds, moving in good company, desisting from evil and keeping the mind attached to the Glory of God. Good and bad cannot be kept together in the same place. The Sun once remarked that he had no enemies left and someone told him that there still was one – Darkness! Then, he sent his rays, the emissaries, to seek out the foe. But wherever they went, they only saw light and darkness was nowhere to be found. They returned and reported – there was no such thing as darkness upon the earth. So too, you must gain victory of good over bad within you by persisting vigorously in your spiritual practices.

Everyone in life desires to have complete happiness and escape from sorrow in life.
One has to analyse and understand between truth and untruth, justice and unjustice.
Whether one likes it or not, one has to experience in life happiness and sorrow together
in a cycle. One may have aversions, worries and persistent troubles, etc.
But one has to get mentally prepared to balance the happiness and sorrow. To get over
from sorrow, one has to do prayer, worship, meditation, etc through which one
can attain divine bliss. As Baba says, it can also be attained through good deeds,
association with a Satsang, etc.

A brahmin was once crossing a river bed, and some men were washing clothes. Finding a nice new silk shawl on his shoulder, they fell upon him in a group, shouting that it belonged to the palace and had been given to them to be washed, but had been stolen and not been traced. The poor brahmin screamed “Narayana, Narayana” when they rained blows on him. Immediately Lord Narayana rose from His seat, walked forward, stopped and returned to His seat! His surprised consort asked Him the reason for His strange behaviour. Lord Narayana said, “I wanted to help that poor brahmin who has fallen into a den of scoundrels, but he has started beating them blow for blow – My help is no longer needed!” Leaving everything to His will is truly the highest form of devotion and the easiest way to win His Grace.

Spiritual discipline is more arduous than physical discipline. Imagine the tremendous amount of effort undergone by the lady who runs along a wire stretched across the ring underneath a circus tent. The gain is just a few rupees after all. The same steadfastness and systematic effort aimed at a higher reward can endow you with mental balance and you can maintain your equilibrium under the most adverse or the most testing circumstances. But for such spiritual achievements the intellect and other instruments of perception are more important than the limbs. The intellect is the key. Make the intellect the master of your mind and you will not fail. You will fail only when the senses establish mastery over the mind.

A spiritual discipline only when practiced regularly and sincerely with absolute faith
in one's life brings the divine power. Some through spiritual disciplines gain an intimacy
towards the Supreme Power in the course of some years. So long one's life goes smoother
none bothers about it but for rougher period. Disciplines and practices must be
made part of our daily duties. There are many methods to practice viz. dyanam, meditation,
worship, prayer, namasangeerthanam, namasmaranam, activities in Satsangh, etc. besides
reading Scriptures. These are some of the powerful tools we have in Hindu customs. Confident
practices brings in spiritual growth and it enable to grow to spiritual maturity. This process of
spiritual growth and development guides a person to achieve the divine bliss.

Sai Ram

Balasubramanian

A devotee who is keen to seek the bliss of the Supreme Power can search for many
directions. One such method is the form of chanting God’s Nama. One can join a
Satsangh and sing along with them in a loud voice the bhajans and keertans that
glorify the Bhagavan. There are many sweet devotional songs. One can choose among
them and sing them as one likes. Some people chant in a loud voice. Chanting will certainly
enrich everyone but silent meditation has its own effect. The advantage in a Satsangh
is getting the help of musical instruments. Yet another advantage in a Satsangh is that
there will be many people and the atmosphere will be entirely different. Some will be
clapping their hands. One can listen to the music and enjoy while meditation process goes
simultaneously. If one's desire in chanting develops, one should increase it to two rounds
daily i.e. in the morning and evening and try not to reduce this. In this process, one can
gradually increase one's chanting practices.

There are three types of devotion: The Vihanga method, where like a bird swooping down upon the ripe fruit on the tree, the devotee is too impatient and by the very impatience one exhibits, loses the fruit, which falls from one’s hold. The Markata method is akin to a monkey which grabs one fruit and then chooses another and tugs at that, giving way to unsteadiness as it is unable to decide which fruit it wants. So too, the devotee of this type hesitates and changes the goal much too often and thus loses all chances of success. The third and ideal type is the Pipeelika method, where like the ant, which slowly but steadily proceeds towards the sweetness, the devotee also moves directly, with undivided attention towards the Lord and wins His Grace.

As Baba Says, Service to God can be of any form. It is a most comprehensive term,
and includes not merely the conceptual, but also relates to human conduct throughout life.
Some may wonder whether the faith, trust or confidence in devotion or worship shall take
a person towards the Bliss of the Supreme Power or the good deeds rendered are the right path.
The Supreme Power may be very happy even with the offering of a leaf, a flower or a little water
.
Perhaps, it would be the most appropriate to act or follow the effortless simple path for adoption
in life. All good qualities and behavior automatically accrues to a person who strictly follows
the right path of devotion. A good person behaves in a friendly manner with everyone
and as a result he sustains peace rather without any turmoil or stress in mind. God realization
is very essential. Devotion has to be the supreme aim for attaining the bliss of divine power.

A child told its mother as it went to bed at night, “Mother, wake me up when I am hungry.” The mother answered, “There is no need, your hunger will itself wake you up.” So too, when the hunger for God arises, it will itself activate you to seek the fulfilment. God has endowed you with hunger and illness, and He provides the food and medicine. Your duty is to see that you get the right hunger and the right illness and use the appropriate food or drug! Man must be yoked to the world and broken; that is the training which will teach that the world is unreal. When you touch fire and get the sensation of burning, you withdraw your hand instantly. Unless you touch it, you will be aware only of its light. It is light and heat both; just as this world is both true and false, that is to say, unreal.

A desperate person is determined to cling on to a sense of prayer or Namasmaran
with a burning desire for HIS blessings. God’s blessing is essential and imperative to everyone in
life, precisely blessing of hope, peace, well being, etc. than just money or any other assets
i.e. physical or material things. Obedience and sincerity besides concentration are very important
for doing Namasmaran. One must pray ardently knowing that one's joy and peace is purely based
upon HIS presence and HIS blessings.
Nama Sankeertanam is one of the best and reliable methods

A lame man and a blind man became friends and they moved from one place to another, with the lame man riding on the shoulder of the blind. One day, the lame man saw a field of yellow cucumber and suggested to the blind man that they pick a few and eat their fill. The blind man asked, “Brother, have they fenced the crop?” The lame man said, “No!” The blind man said, “Then let us move on, you know there are sweet and bitter varieties – if these vegetables are left unguarded – they must be bitter!” The blind man, by his intellect, was able to discover that they were bitter even without tasting them. He used the intelligence to perceive the truth faster and clearer. Everyone knows that the structure of a person other than the physical part of body
for functional aspects mind and intellect also play a key role. These are the inner part,
it can also be termed as the psychological part. Suppose, if the intellect functions
independently, it can assume the role of an observer, moderator, and also as a regulator,
even it can be counselor and a guide. Thus it plays a significant role. Suppose, if the
intellect loses its independence by overpowering mind, in that case, the intellect
slowly becomes weaker and gets diverted. Normally, it plays the role of an instrument
in the hands of clever and shrewd person. Therefore, one has to be very alert,
agile, so as to observe the inner part. One has to make a sincere effort to make the
intellect as a superior one, without letting it to be controlled by the mind. Our Vedic
emphasizes the importance of Gayatri Mantra. Everyone knows that the Brahma
gayatri is initiated at the time of Upanayanam. It enlightens and illuminates the mind.
The last line emphasizes about the illumination of one's intellect. Spiritual discipline
enables one to get the intellect revamped and purified.

Baduma Kasim Valekar, an old lady of 60 was admitted as an in-patient on 30th Oct 61 in my Nursing Home, seriously ill with acute double pneumonia and I treated her for three days, 30th, 31st and 1st Nov ‘61 during which she registered some improvement. But, on the fourth day, about midnight, her condition suddenly turned precarious and I was hastily summoned to her side. She was in great distress, her heart was sinking and I gave her a Coramin injection. That did not improve matters and I tried an additional internal dose of Coramin too. Her condition continued to worsen and I could see no sign of hope. I returned with a heavy heart to my house about 1 a.m.
Baba was my Only Refuge. I took bath at that late hour, and entered the Puja Room. I performed the Astothra Puja to Baba and prayed, “I have tried all drugs and cures known to me; now, I am helpless. I do not know any more. The responsibility is yours now; save her, O’ Baba. Save me and my reputation.” I then went to bed, but, I could not sleep on account of anxiety. The picture of grief around the sick bed haunted me. I hurried before dawn to the Nursing Home and what a surprise!... when I found Baduma sitting up on the cot! I gave her the Vibhuti that Baba had given me when I took leave of Him at Puttaparthi and asked her what had happened at night. Had anyone come? I asked. She replied that she did not remember much, but, someone came and placed His hand on her cheek just below the ear, and also stroked the head. She said, “I felt great relief.” She said that the person had a heavy load of curly hair! He had sat on the cot by her side for some time and disappeared.
I was overcome by surprise and thankfulness. I ran into my room and bringing with me the picture of Baba, I asked her, “Is this The Person Who came?” “THE SAME,” she cried.
Needless to say, “Baduma recovered quickly...”
“Oh! What a blessed soul is that lady! She had the good fortune of being treated by the Loving All- merciful Hand of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba!”

The husband saw on the footpath a precious stone, shining brilliantly when the Sun’s rays fell upon it from between the leaves. He hastily threw some sand over it with the movement of his foot, so that his wife may not be tempted to pick it up and become a slave to the tinsel. The wife saw the gesture and chided the husband for still retaining in his mind, a distinction between sand and gold. For her, both were the same. If one is able to realize the oneness of our Supreme Power, one may develop divine love throughout
the entire life. Once a person is able to understand this concept, it helps him/her to overcome worries
particularly about the kiths and kins who have passed away. Further, one may be able to understand
demise is nothing but a transition to another realm of existence because human being is an immortal
soul, which is part of one's life. Further, one may be able to work out the troubles or problems in life.
Realizing oneness is rather an opening of a door to sustained peace in life. If a person is able to develop
self awareness, then he/she may be able understand the barriers/beliefs in life that are restraining them
from proceeding. Suppose if a person starts working with someone else or in a group in cooperation and
of service to others he/she will begin to appreciate and realize the strength that he/she has as a group
or as a team. For example, we cannot construct a house or any building with a single brick. If a person
works alone for his/her self interest, no body comes forward when one really needs others help for
survival in life and it is equivalent to a single brick. One may be individually useful but may not achieve
the true potential. Hence, one should extend help others with the talents and skills one has, so that
he/she will be useful for the common benefit of society and others and similarly by sharing others talents
and skills for a greater goal of everyone.

You are as distant from the Lord, as you think you are; as near Him, as you feel you are. The distance from Me to you is the same as the distance from you to Me, is it not? You complain that I am far from you, though you are approaching nearer and nearer. How can that be? I am as near you, as you are near to Me! Nearness to the Lord is won by Devotion, which cannot be steady until you get rid of the feelings of ‘I’ and ‘Mine’. Look upon joy and grief as teachers of hard-work and balance. Grief is a friendly reminder, a good taskmaster, even a better teacher than joy. The Lord grants both protection and punishment – for, how can He be the Lord, if He does not insist on strict accounting and strict obedience?

- Divine Discourse, 20 Feb 1964.

Normally, a person assumes that God is not easily reachable but it is no so. If one assumes
one can reach HIM, then automatically he becomes nearer to us. It is not a geographical
point to measure. One should assume that God is everywhere and HE is with us. It only
depends on one's trust, confidence that brings a feeling of nearness. The more we are
attached to him and practice spiritual activities, HE comes nearer to us. In Skanda Purana
there is an interesting quote about Tulasi and also about its significance.

Just by looking at you (Tulasi), all sins become removed. Just by touching
it, one's body becomes pure. By praying to her, all diseases practically
become removed. If one waters her or makes her wet, the fear of Yamaraja
(death personified) is destroyed. Just by planting or transplanting, one
achieves nearness to the Supreme Personality of Godhead. If someone offers
Tulasi at the lotus feet of Lord Sri Krishna, she awards liberation and devotion
to Him. Therefore God can be reached in any form and one can also understand
the significance of Tulasi, which is worshipped in the form of a Goddess. If one

goes round the Tulasi Madam daily and pays sincere prayer to her, no sin would be
left out in a person. Therefore, any person who daily witnesses Tulasi in the morning,
touches Tulasi with purity of mind, chants Tulasi's prayers, meditates on Tulasi, pays
namaskarams, hears about its story, transplants and worships, he/she can achieve
all holiness. Whoever does these sincerely, it is interpreted that one would be able to
attain Moksha, i.e. Heaven and remains there eternally.

A person once told Dr. Johnson, the famous English thinker, that he could seldom get time to recite the Name of God, what with the hundreds of things he had to do from morning till nightfall and even far into the night. Dr. Johnson replied with another question. He asked how millions of people found space to live upon the face of the earth, which is two-thirds water and the rest is too full of mountains, deserts, forests, icy regions, river beds, marshes and similar impossible areas. The questioner said that man somehow struggled to find living space. So too, said Dr. Johnson, man must somehow find a few minutes a day for prayer to the Lord. Keep the Name and Form of your choice ever in your consciousness. The Name must be as constant as breathing. And for this, practice is essential.

Prayer has to be in the form of perceiving the choice of one's deity in true identity with absolute
consciousness. Prayer becomes part of one's spiritual training towards the Supreme Power. In order
to have an effective prayer, one has to bring the image without undisturbed mind. If one does worship
and devotion continuously, one can fetch the desired results. One can find in the Universe that people
have various types of miseries, troubles, difficulties, etc. Normally, one's mind gets disturbed and remains
unbalanced. In that event, one may not be able to understand the pleasant or unpleasant situations
very clearly. One has to have a cool mind and try to stabilize the mind in Divine Consciousness so as to
attain the divine bliss. If one is able to fix the mind and heart together steadily on the Divine Power
with absolute devotion and faith, one can very easily find a space for the Divine Power just like a breath
we have, as Baba says.
